The Other Side of the Sky
by Jaine

What would you do if you’d volunteered to go off-world, and then you couldn’t get back to Earth? What if that other world had everything you needed to survive, but something is stopping you from getting it? See what will happen when you read…

The Other side of the Sky

It is the future. Science has found a way to instantaneously transport matter through the interstellar void and a colony has been established on another planet. When a group of young volunteers are sent to join the settlement’s exploration programme, they really can’t know what they’re getting themselves into. For a start, the transport device is defective, and only four get off where five got on. The colonists don’t seem pleased to see them, and the place is in bad repair. The surrounding forest is full of nasty noises and strange songs; the sea contains fish that might have you for dinner, and the humans may be just as dangerous as the aliens. To cap it all, Earth cannot be contacted and no one can go home.

Can the explorers survive long enough to solve the water crisis? Will the alien hieroglyphs reveal their secrets, and just how did Lily get pregnant?

“You can’t understand how it is,” Jonjo’s nervous eyes flickered to the forest and back to Lily. “They only let us do certain things.”

Tomas looked out at the churning sea, then down at the sticky red swathe across the beach. “Scream later” he said curtly, “Something is coming to clean that up.”

Lily blinked, several times. Someone dressed like a medieval monk, with hood up and head bowed, was walking alongside the gently flowing stream. The monk she could believe, but the stream had dried up weeks ago.

Mac shook his head slowly. “ Lily, Lily, how can you be so naïve? If you don’t do as I say, everyone is going to find out about your shameful secret.”

He moved a little closer and met her eyes. “And we don’t want that, do we?”
