On the Side of the Wolves

On the Side of the Wolves
by Eric Schneider

The bold military commander has promised that his private army will overthrow every tyranny and dictatorship on Earth, will bring us true freedom at last. All he asks of the United States is that we stay neutral or join him. Will we join him? But wait! He and his troops are aliens, from the planet Ghraa, where people evolved from wolves. Can we fight alongside aliens-- against other humans--even for liberty?

From every continent, eyes turn confidently for leadership to President David Marsh, re-elected by a landslide last year, in 2024. But Marsh is in a coma, dying of cancer, his condition kept secret by a small, determined group of aides. And no one knows that his beautiful, young wife, Andrea, aided by three powerful political allies, is unofficially running the country.

Andrea has promised to carry out her husband’s policy of détente with all nations. But she must take care. A Libertarian, and a passionate, romantically unfulfilled woman, Andrea's mind and her heart may really be…On the Side of the Wolves

“We observe your planet’s barbaric political condition, and we will not tolerate it.” The deep, clear, almost-human voice came through, in thirteen tongues at once, on every electronic communication channel on Earth.

In the Oval Office, Andrea Langer-Marsh sat with her secretary, Laura McElroy. She stared, unmoving, at the 60" TV screen. The speaker's face was covered in dark blue fur, with a slightly extended snout, and warm brown eyes that she trusted without knowing why. From a wide mouth full of sharp white teeth and a liquid pink tongue, the voice continued.

I am Wolf Gudreeeo, Commander of the Galactic Freedom Expeditionary Force, a private army of eight fighting ships and seven thousand troops from this galaxy. The rulers of North Korea, Nigeria, and The People’s Republic of China, have seventy-two hours to transfer all political power to parties that value individual liberty."

The rest of your dictators will follow quickly. We will be in Earth orbit by this time tomorrow. Death to Tyrants!”

Andrea’s heart was racing, and her face, neck, and thighs suddenly were very warm. Laura fanned herself with a file folder, smiled, and rolled her eyes at the blank screen.

"Rrrufff!" she said.

Andrea tried hard to remember the face of her husband, the President of the United States. But all she could visualize was the sharp white teeth, and pink tongue, of either Earth's champion or Andrea's deadliest enemy.
