Leviathan
Some Background on the Demon Name

The Origin

Leviathan is a demonic name of Hebrew origin. It literally means “twisted” or “coiled” . He was also later called The Old Serpent, identifying Leviathan with Satan- the Devil Himself .

Leviathan is described as a sea serpent , a whale or a dragon. He has thousands of shields for scales and can never be wounded by any manmade weapon. And is often described as a monster with seven heads *. This gives him a striking resemblance to ‘the great beast’. According to the bible God made two huge creatures. Leviathan was not alone, she originally had a mate . But when God realised how immensely powerful these two creatures where he took one away.

The Apocryphal Book of Enoch gives the following description of Leviathan’s origins:

“And that day will two monsters be parted, one monster, a female named Leviathan in order to dwell in the abyss of the ocean over the fountains of water; and (the other), a male called Beomoth which holds his chest in an invisible desert whose name is Dundayin, east of the garden of Eden.” - 1 Enoch 60:7-8

This would suggest that Leviathan is rather a She than a He. But as we shall see Leviathan is rather asexual ( most demons are ecept of course the great Lillith and Sammael as they function as the male/femal architypes)

The book of Job gives a detailed description of Leviathan concluding with ;

“He laughs at the rattling of the javelin. His underparts are like sharp potsherds; He spreads out like a threshing sledge on the mire. He makes the depths boil like a pot; He makes the sea like a jar of ointment. Behind him he makes a wake to shine; One would think the deep to be gray-haired. Nothing on earth is like him, One made without fear. He looks on everything that is high; He is king over all the sons of pride.” - Job 42:26-32

Admiral of The Devil’s Navy

Leviathan can be identified with the Lovecraftian Cthulhu (also written Ktulu) or Dagon. Like Cthulhu he is the Evil that sleeps in the deep as well as the guardian of the waters and the keeper of it’s dark secrets. Both Leviathan and Cthulhu where rumoured to be dead, killed by the hand of (a)God . Both sea-horrors seemed immortal however .

Demonologists doubted Leviathan “Admiral of the Devil’s navy”. According to Biblical legend Leviathan is told to be asleep until the day of Judgement. Then he would rise and battle once more. And would be slain by Michael (other sources say Gabriel) or possibly even God himself.

The Archetypal Leviathan and Its Paradox

Leviathan is described as the personification of secret evil and dormant powers - the primordial evil that lies dormant in each one of us . So there can be a individual Leviathan as well as a collective Leviathan. Leviathan lives in all of us - he is born from instinct and a natural way of life. It represents the uncontrollable elements and urges of the human psyche. It represents dormant powers of an intense and often dangerous magnitude.

In mythology Leviathan is a mighty sea monster that can not be destroyed by man, only by God the almighty (Michael serving as an agent of his power) . This of course stands for the immortality of the Leviathan. For man can not deny his instinctual urges, even is he tries and suppresses them but like the Dragon, they are bound to surface one time.

Since I do not believe in The Almighty, I do not believe in Leviathan’s destruction. But then again how can I even believe in Leviathan’s existence ? I believe in the powerful metaphor that is used in these myths - the symbols can describe more with one name than whole books. Leviathan was The Devil for Jews and Christians alike because he represented all they hated and feared . Note that both Judaism and Christianity are religions that try to mould people in unnatural things that are weak and have lost all trace of instinct. Most organised religions want nothing more than to classify everything , breaking it down to digit which they will putt in frames and give a number tag . Leviathan is untamed , wild , he is Chaos ! And thus he becomes their greatest enemy . The Destruction of the Evil dragon is simply a metaphor for the overcoming of obstacles. However Leviathan isn’t a puny thing to overcome, it one must be a God(dess) . God can be distilled to the metaphor for a powerful Magus. For a Magus knows nature( including chaos) and can therefor alter or manipulate nature according to his /her magical will.

the Evil that must be destroyed “ This is a rather paradoxical statement. Leviathan is a shadow in constant flux, illusive yet very real - a nightmare with actual fangs if you will . “It must be destroyed” is rather stupid advice ! Knowing Leviathan can not die, it will simply change, adapt or re-manifest itself in some way you don’t expect. If you think you have slain the dragon you are pretty deluded or you simply destroyed some form of Leviathan by it’s own demand …

The act of destruction is Leviathan itself ,therefor he is like a Hydra ; Cut one head off and two more will grow.

A Well Respected Demon

The Satanic Bible recognises Leviathan as the infernal crown prince of the West and describes him as ‘the keeper of the watery abyss’. The Book of Leviathan is the forth part of the Satanic Bible and contains the *Enochian Keys ; a series magical texts told to be one of the most powerful texts in to world.

Also the emblem of LaVey’s Church of Satan, called the sigil of Baphoment contains the Hebrew characters that spell out Leviathan ~LVIThN ( Lamed , Vav ,Jod , Tau and Nun counter-clockwise) . Making Leviathan one of the most know Demons.

The First Churh of Satan’s seal is very similar to the one of the CoS , where it not that they had added the self-devouring serpent. The seal displayed here was created by Lord Egan, the high priest of the First Church Of Satan.

It is no secret that Leviathan embodies most of the ideals the Left-handed-path strives for and is thereby one of the favourites of all sinister magi. Why even the Black Order of the Dragon , one of the most prominent Vampyric groups has integrated Leviathan into their teachings. The Black Order of the Dragon states the following on Leviathan ; “Leviathan represents the point or gate to the Abyss-the dark matter itself. To invoke Leviathan is to open all possibilities unto the self, to seek understanding of your true will and to embark upon that path.”

Hail Leviathan!

Note ; The Seven-headed dragon stands for the seven hills of Rome - thus symbolising oppression
