Su Buqing, CAS Member and Mathematician, Passes Away
 
 
     Su Buqing (Su Bu-Chin), a CAS member and mathematician, died of illness at 101 on March 17, 2003 in Shanghai.

    Su graduated from Northeast Imperial University in Japan in 1927 and received his Ph.D. from the University in 1931. He became an academician of the Central Academy of Sciences in 1948. He was professor and honorary president of Fudan University, and honorary chairman of the Chinese Mathematical Society

    Praised as the "first geometer in orient," Su was engaged in research, teaching and education in differential geometry and computational geometry. In his early years, he made excellent fulfillment in affine differential geometry and projective differential geometry. He obtained extraordinary achievements in general space differential geometry, conjugate net theory in higher dimensional space and computer aided geometry design.

    Su became Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1955.
