1) Who are you?
My name is Irving Adams. I am the assistant manager at the JKRC. I started working at the center about 5 months ago. The Commission for the Blind has been my employer for the last 20 years. During those 20 years, I have had many jobs. These jobs include working as a college counselor (twice), a high-school counselor, director of staff development (training) and career development. I thoroughly enjoyed all of these positions. Before I came to work for the State of New Jersey, I was a math teacher in Newark during the day. At night, I worked for both the New Brunswick and Plainfield night schools. I still bump into my former students on the streets of these towns many years after leaving teaching.
2) What do you do here?
I make sure the building is running smoothly by taking care of maintenance, scheduling, and student issues.
3) Where do you see the JKRC in the next few years?
Under Don Potenski the mood of the JKRC has changed. As you know, this center did not have a manager for a long time. Don is making sure this center is the premier residential rehabilitation center in the country. By installing internet accessible computers in every room, instituting a Speakers Bureau, starting a Work Training Room (WTR), and other exciting programs, the JKRC is well on its way.
4) ‘What contributions have you made or will you make in the future to improve the JKRC?
I see myself as the direct contact between the administration and the students. I also bring over 20 years experience as Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor to the center.
5) What credentials do you have?
I have a masters degree in vocational rehabilitation that I obtained from the University of Medicine and Dentistry (2003) and a bachelors degree in education from Fairleigh Dickinson University (Madison)
