Text Box: Braille Menus for the Hyatt

On February 23rd Don Potenski, Larry Bonds and Bob Baker traveled to the Hyatt Hotel in downtown New Brunswick to present the hotel’s manager, Mr. Larry Daniels, with five Braille menus for the Hyatt’s Albany II restaurant.  The menus were created by the JKRC Publishing Company working out of the Work Training Room at the JKRC rehab center.  The menus were truly a team effort and involved the participation of JKRC students and the regular staff of the Work Training Room.
It is hoped that this February delivery of the elegant Braille menus produced at the JKRC will be the first delivery of many to restaurants in New Brunswick and eventually all over New Jersey.  Now that the members of JKRC publishing have mastered the task of manufacturing the menus for the Hyatt, they are confident that their skill will be up to the standards of any restaurant.  “I am confident that we can offer a quality product and one that will not be out of harmony with even the finest restaurants in the country,” commented Bob Baker, the coordinator of the Work Training Room.  The next step is marketing the menus and will involve JKRC students contacting prospective restaurants and assisting them to understand that offering a quality Braille menu to their blind and visually-impaired clients is a part of overall restaurant excellence.

JKRC Birthday Bashes

Birthday celebrations have been reinvigorated here at the JKRC thanks to the efforts of   Debby Randal and her birthday committee made up of Doug Heine, Irving Adams and Roz Robinson.  Debby’s goal was to transform birthday celebrations at the center from “ho hum to yum yum,” and by all accounts she has succeeded in doing just that.

The first of the “new style” celebrations observed the birthdays of all students and staff born in November, December, or January.  Now they are celebrated monthly for students and staff born in the current month or who will have a birthday after they leave the next month.  Debby wanted to create “a celebration at which people would want to stay.”  And stay they do; the celebrations are both fun and warm and the food is off the scales, as we should expect with Debby at the helm.  The celebrations also feature cards created by Tracy Liebman from the JKRC publishing company.  All in all birthdays have become a lot more fun at the JKRC lately.

In Memory of Aaron Stamper 1949-2005

We regret to inform you that Aaron Stamper Jr. passed away on March 18, 2005. Aaron was a volunteer Chaplin for Elizabeth General hospital in Elizabeth, NJ. Aaron also worked as a clerk and a driver for the Commission for the Blind & Visually Impaired and the Meyer Center for 17 years. Aaron was also a state rep for the local AFSCME #2318.

Aaron was a skilled and accomplished pianist. “He will be sorely missed,” says JKRC staffer Vera Wilson. Ruth Betzler, another staff member, recalls his trademark white flower which always adorned his lapel. Aaron is survived by his wife Brenda and 2 sons Danyell and Moreal.
