At the 38th Annual Shepherd-Hedrick Reunion held in August 2004 those attending voted to update and compile the genealogical information for the descendants of their ancestors, William George and Catherine Parkin Shepherd. In 1970 Ralph W. Hedrick published his book, WILLIAM G. SHEPHERD FAMILY: STORY AND GENEALOGY, 1778-1970. In this book he included historical and background information on the Shepherd and Parkin families, a history of Mt. Vernon Church, several photographs, and personal information as well as genealogical charts for the descendants of William G. and Catherine Parkin Shepherd and several allied families. Following the publication of this book, Ralph and his wife, Laura Rector Hedrick, gave annual updates orally at the Shepherd-Hedrick reunions as long as their health permitted them to attend. In 1981 they distributed five sheets: “Update of Family Line, August 1981, THE SHEPHERD BOOK. Both the oral and written updates included information about births, deaths, marriages, and educational accomplishments of the descendants of the three Shepherd sisters who married Hedrick cousins. This book, THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM GEORGE SHEPHERD AND CATHERINE PARKIN SHEPHERD, is not a revision of the now out-of-print book written by Ralph Hedrick. Rather, it is an attempt to gather the basic information (i.e. name, birth, marriage, death, burial) for the various descendants to the present time and only this basic genealogical data is being included. The information for this booklet came from the great-grandchildren, and in some instances, the great-great grandchildren, of the Shepherds. These descendants were asked to submit current information for their families and to correct any errors in the genealogical charts compiled by Ralph W. Hedrick. Dorothy King Feamster and Joyce Hedrick Coiner were particularly helpful in verifying and submitting information. Some supplementary information came from birth and marriage announcements and obituaries appearing in various newspapers. The information herewith, in most instances, has not been verified through public records. Errors or additions may be brought to the attention of the current officers of the Shepherd-Hedrick Reunion. The information for the Ahnentafel and the four Descendant Charts for allied families printed after the index came from the genealogy research of Jeannette H. Bodurtha.
