HaloInRverse's MUA Tech FAQ Please feel free to link this to your own site. Last updated 09/22/04 LMK if you have questions, comments, concerns, or if you would like me to add anything. How do I put a pic on my notepad or swap description? First, you will need to host your picture. Your email provider may provide this service. Make sure that your hosting service allows "hotlinking." You can get free photo hosting space at photobucket.com Hosting involves taking a pic from your computer and putting it on a site. Think of it as an online photo album. Each picture will have its own page/address. HTML is a computer mark up language that you will need to use to display the pic. Think of it as an algebraic equation. The command for inserting a pic is the constant, and the address of the pic is the variable. The command will always be the same, and you will have to “plug in” the variable, which is the address of the pic. For example, if you were to cut and paste the following address into a browser window, you will see the picture below. http://www.angelfire.com/zine2/haloinrverse/window.jpg If you insert this address into the HTML code for inserting a picture and paste it into your HTML file, (your MUA notepad) it will show up like this:
Here is an example of the code for inserting a picture: <IMG SRC="http://www.angelfire.com/zine2/haloinrverse/window.jpg" >
Remember that if one part of your code is incorrect it will display as a broken link. You can view examples of the HTML picture code by right clicking on a picture and viewing the source. You can learn to how align your picture differently by visiting this site:
HMTL Primer. How do I use a pic as a background for my notepad? Follow the above directions for photo hosting. the code for a background picture is: <TD background="http://www.angelfire.com/zine2/haloinrverse/Copy_of_hole_background_wallpaper.gif"> How do I post an image directly into the message body of my board post? Coming soon Why does my notepad look different when viewed from a swap/wish item than from the notepad link? Because it wants to frustrate you to the point of tears. MUA's HTML editor will try to get you in your sleep. Even if you never touch the editor mode, it will insert <BR> tags automatically. You'll have to manually correct the extra tags in the HTML mode and fiddle with the spacing. Hitting the return key to separate your HTML for easy personal viewing will behave as though you used the <BR> tag. My pics are too big to upload onto MUA's pic section. You will need to reduce the file size of your pic to less than 100 KB. You can do this with a photo editing program such as Adobe Photo Shop, or you can do this with your computer's paint program. Go to start on your lower toolbar, then go to programs, then accessories, and open your paint program. Open your file in the paint program. From here, you can resize it, add text, etc. You will need to resave it as a file with a .bmp extension, alter the image, then resave it as a .jpg or .gif. This is very simple to do, and you will see the option when the save window pops up. How do I add a link to another site to my Swap Pad? To make a link with a title that opens in the same window: <A HREF="http://www.angelfire.com/zine2/haloinrverse/FAQ.html">HaloInRverse's MUA Tech FAQ</A>
It displays as (try it out): HaloInRverse's MUA Tech FAQ To make a link with a title that opens in a different window: <A HREF="http://www.angelfire.com/zine2/haloinrverse/FAQ.html" TARGET=new>HaloInRverse's MUA Tech FAQ</A> It displays as (try it out): HaloInRverse's MUA Tech FAQ When I try to UL pics to my MUA pics, the same pic keeps ULing, even though I choose different files. On your MUA pics center, it sometimes seems that you are uploading the same pic over and over, even though you are choosing different files each time. There is some sort of glitch that causes the same thumbnail (a small version of your pic, shown as reference) to be displayed. Click on the "preview image" link to confirm that the correct pic has been uploaded. You can look at your pics through your own profile (click swap, then "my profile.") Your pics should be displayed properly. Sometimes a thumbnail on this page will show one image, but when you click on it it will show the proper image. Keep refreshing your browser, and it will work itself out in time. You can also close out of your browser and re-open it. Why can't I upload Pics even though they are in JPG/JPEG format? See above for "My pics are too big..." for info on how to resize images. You will get an error message that says your format is invalid (even if it is JPG/JPEG format) if the size exceeds 100 kb. Why is the search function limited? The search function became limited around December '03. The current archive contains only X number of posts. Why can't I find a recently discussed topic or word with the search function? Posts are archived for search every 24 hours. How do I use my MUA mail? MUA mail lets you send an email to another MUA member without knowing their email address. To mail, go to their profile. (note: not every member has their mail turned on.) click on the mail icon, and proceed from there. Access your MUA mail with the mail icon at the upper green tool bar. To ignore a member, open an email from them and click "ignore." To un-ignore, go to the left toolbar and click "ignore list." To choose whether to be notified of a new MUA mail in your own email account, click preferences. You can also turn off your mail completely. What is flagging? How does it work? Why dont I have the ability to flag? When a post is clicked on, there will be a pink flag button. Not all members have this privilege. Length of membership determines when a member will recieve the ability to flag. (It used to be given when a member was one year old, then 6 months or 8 months. I'm not sure what the rule is now.) When a post is flagged, it is submitted for the review of the webmaster. The webmaster is the only person who will know what posts were flagged or who flagged them. After a certain number of flags, the post will be automatically removed. Extremely inappropriate posts can be flagged. There is some debate over what is inappropriate. Some people take offense to explicit language and some people don't. Either way, it is against the TOS. A post should not be flagged because someone expresses a differing or unpopular opinion. A post may be flagged if it is something said specifically to inflame, or if the poster calls someone an inappropriate name. How do I change my password? Go to "Member Center," then "My Account". Erase the asterisks that represent your password, and enter your new password. You may receive your confirmation email from MUA instantaneously, or it may take a few days. How do I change the email address linked to my MUA account? Go to "Member Center," then click on "email change." You may receive your confirmation email from MUA instantaneously, or it may take a few days. Your account will be disabled until you receive your confirmation email. How do I change my user name? The Webmaster no longer does user name changes. If you would like to have a new name, you will have to create a new account, and you wont be able to transfer any of your information. How do I edit a token I have given? There is no way to edit the actual text, but you can remove the token and award a new one. Go to "swap," then to "remove" under the section for swap tokens. How do I get a brand added for review/my swaplist/my wishlist? Email brands@makeupalley.com. Include as much info on the brand as possible. It is my understanding that new brands are added based on the number of requests, so not every brand that is requested will end up being added. New brands will not be added until older or discontinued brands have been deleted. Why can't I create a review for a previously unreviewed product of an existing brand? You must have at least 25 reviews to add a new product. If you are over the 25 review mark and still cannot add a new product, page Emart (the webmaster.) Why can't I do a review for a new unlisted brand? You cannot add a new brand under the category of unlisted, but you can add a review for an already existing unlisted brand. It may take a bit of searching, but there are several unlisted brands already available. My newly added review doesn't show up in the Productville database. It takes a few minutes for reviews to be archived and searchable. You can check to see if your review went through by viewing your profile externally and clicking on the link for reviews. My newly added swap item doesn't show up in a search or on the swap page. It takes a few minutes for newly added items to be archived and searchable. When I try to change my hair/eye color and skin type, it always displays as other. It will display as other when viewed from the editing page, but it will display properly when viewed externally. When viewing the boards, I get taken to an old page when I hit the back button. Your browser is storing a cached version of the web page. Hit refresh on the toolbar. A window will pop up. Hit renew. Clearing your cache may or may not help. To learn how to clear your cache, click here. Someone is sending me harassing emails or leaving wrongful tokens. What to do? As stated on
The MUA swap FAQ page, MUA will not get involved in swap disputes. If you are receiving unwanted mails from another MUA member and you would like to report it, forward the emails to Webmaster Elky (user name Emart.) You can also block them from mailing you (Open the mail from the user and click "ignore.") Out of courtesy to other MUA members, please do not take your dispute to the boards. Elky and Hara have asked us not to have swap talk on the boards. I understand to need to warn others about a person's inappropriate behavior, but it will only disrupt the boards and make people upset in the long run. I am involved in a problematic swap. What should I do? Visit Swap Tawk for advice. You can create a free account and be ready and posting in a few minutes. The registration process is detailed on the site. To avoid a posting/viewing limit, post on the "Introduce Yourself" forum. You can ask about any sort of situation, as long as you do not use the person's full name or full address. Partial names, addresses, and full user names are ok. We have a new Problems Swappers Site courtesy of DaisyDaisy@MUA: Swaplifters Page Elky and Hara have asked us not to discuss swap problems on the boards out of respect for fellow MUAers. My font size is huge all of a sudden. How do I fix this, and what causes it? Go to view on your upper toolbar, then to text size. The usual text size is medium. If you have a mouse with a scroll bar, this is most likely what caused the problem. You may have accidentally hit the control key with the palm of your hand, then used your scroll button. You can also adjust text size by hitting control and using your mouse's scroll button. How do I block certain sites? There are two ways to do this. The first is quick and easy, but it may not take care of the problem fully. Go to tools on your upper toolbar, then to internet options. Click the tab that says privacy. click on the restricted sites icon, then click on the button that says sites. Enter the URL of the site you wish to block, then hit ok. This will most likely solve the problem if you get caught in an endless stream of clogging pop ups from a site such as quickserv. The window will open only once, and you can manually close out of it. For a more effective way, go to this Microsoft site Where can I get space for my own webpage or for hosting .html files? There are several free/cheap web hosting sites. I use angelfire because I like the way their webshell is organized, and it's very user friendly. They offer page building editors for those who have minimal knowledge of HTML. You can also code in your HTML manually. Many MUAers use Freewebs.com. I find the webshell to be more confusing initially, but Freewebs provides options for viewing while building your page, so you can edit/build and see how it will display as yourre doing it.
