Horse Terms
- Dressage
- Dressage is French for training. The point of dressage is create harmony and understanding between you and your horse. In the end, if you do it right, it will look like the horse is doing all the commands on his own.
- Dressage Whip
- A long whip used for training dressage horses. It is long enough so you do not have to move your hand to tap the horse with it.
- Two-Point
- Two-Point is the position you are in while jumping a horse. This throws your weight off of the horses hind quarters where most of his trust comes from, and creates a center of balance so you land evenly on the other side of the fence.
- Lunging
- This is a Training technique used by almost everyone. You use a 20 ft. long lead line, and have the horse go in a circle around you at the walk, trot, canter, and gallop. Some people use this to get all the extra energy out of their horses so they are rideable. To get them to to around in a cirlce you use a lunge with that has a long string at the end and you hold that behind them.
- On the Bit
- On the bit means the horses head is down and soft on the bit.
- German Martingale
- This is used to help get horses on the bit, while your riding
- Surcingle
- Used with lunging....you can attatch different trainign devices to it.
- Side Reins
- Helps set the horses head while lunging, you attatch them to a surcingle.
- Galloping Boots
- These are used for Show Jumping, but mainly Cross-Country. The protect the horses legs from debris, and if you hit a fence, it helps protect the horse.
- Thoroughbred
- The Thoroughbred is used for everything. They race, they jump, they are used for dressage, evending, sometimes even western. They are popular throughout the world, and are very strong, fast, and agile.
