Magellan and 241 sailors left on September 20, 1519 with plans to sail around the world. They headed for the Cape Verde Islands and then to Cape St. Augustine in Brazil. After they reached those destinations, they went to the Bay of Rio Janerio and then sailed to the harbor of San Julian (Argentina), where they stayed all winter long. Next, they traveled to Cape Virgenes and then to the Philippines. Magellan was later killed in the Philippines, but the rest of the crew completed the circumnavigation and reached Spain on September 6, 1522. The three year journey was estimated to be around 50,610 miles of sailing.
