Drawing Fishnets

I wondered why so many people were asking me how to make fishnet stockings, and was finally told that The Community Dollz Website had a link to my page, indicating that I had a tutorial on making fishnets. At the time, I didn't have one....but now I do. :) So here we go:

Today we're going to make fishnet stockings. I use Paintshop Pro and this tut is made for that. If you don't have Paint Shop Pro, you can download a 30 day trial at Jasc.com.

If you like, you can also download the fishnet stocking patterns (many colors) I used for this next tutorial. Just remember these are all in bitmap format and go into your Paint Shop Pro Patterns folder. Then you just click on your patterns in Paint Shop, find the one you want and flood fill your stockings. But first I am going to teach you how to make your own.

Fishnet Patterns

Okay, let's get started. First, you will need to open a new palette....in Paint Shop, go to "File"..."new" and make it 3X3....background: transparent and 16.7 million colors.

Before we begin, I wanted to tell you that this is a larger fishnet pattern. If you'd prefer a finer mesh, you might want to follow the instructions on Fishnets Page 2. There is no difference in the tutorials except for making the pattern. Then you follow the rest of the tutorial here on this page.      Click here for the finer mesh.

And just a note here. Instead of using a transparent palette, I am going to have a gray background layer on the legs so that I can see better, but you don't need one. And if you are new to this, probably shouldn't use one. Those little gray and white squares on the palette drive my eyes crazy. For those that are old hands at layers, then you'll understand what I mean. Just don't forget and merge your background layer to your legs if you use one. Now if I can just remember this piece of advice myself, we'll be fine. lol! I just wanted to be sure that any newcomers to dolls understands why they are seeing gray and white squares on their palette and not on mine. Not to worry. Gray and white...or whatever color you have it set to...is fine. :)

Okay...ready? First, on your 3x3 palette, zoom in (Click "zoom in by 5" 3 times) and make 1 pixel dots with the paintbrush. I chose the color blue for my fishnets. Color choice is up to you. Begin with one pixel on the very top line in the center on the palette and then alternate beneath it, skipping over a space as shown here.

As you can see, the first palette has 1 blue dot in the center of the first line. The second line has 2 dots on alternating sides of the first one.... and the third has only one dot. Your dots must follow this pattern exactly. This will be our fishnet pattern. You can always change the colors to suit yourself.

Save the pattern somewhere that you can find it. For now, we will leave it open. Now let's find a pair of legs to work on. Highlight this palette....for those that don't know what I mean, just touch your cursor to the palette with the legs on it. This makes it the active palette. Next go up to LAYERS and add a New Raster Layer. Then we are going to outline the legs like so:

This gives the shape to the stockings, and now we take the magic wand and select it. Be sure to hold down your shift key when you have to select more than one area as you do here. This selects each area without undoing the last one selected. I didn't select the top part of the stocking because I want it to be solid. lol! It's up to you whether you select it or not.

Next, on your color palette, click the little black arrow (see image below) and change the color style to patterns and open it and find your fishnet pattern that you just made. It should still be opened in Paint Shop. You will generally find it at the top of the pattern box.

You may need to adjust the size or "scale" of your pattern. I am going to use mine at 100% for this tutorial, but you might want to play around with this and see what you like best. Next we flood fill the stocking outline on the legs. Then deselect. And this is your pattern at 100%.

And for the last few steps, you can fill in the top part with a slightly darker color of blue.

Then using your "Retouch Tools" (see black arrow on image below, if you don't know what this is.), set it to Darken RGB, and darken the edges around the stocking slightly. (I used these settings: Brush size: 4, Hardness: 0, Opacity:23, Step: 25, and Density: 100)

AND to add a little sheen, change your "Retouch Tool" to Lighten RGB now, and go down the center of the stocking, or wherever you think the light should be on the leg...depending on how your doll is standing or sitting. Be sure to get the top of the stocking. (I used these settings: Brush size: 4, Hardness: 0, Opacity:25, Step: 25, and Density: 100)

And finally, Merge your layers AND.......we're finished. This is what our fishnet stockings look like now. :)

If you'd prefer a finer mesh, you can make the fishnet pattern smaller. The only difference is making the initial pattern that you're going to flood fill with. The rest of the steps are the same as far as shading is concerned etc. Click the link below to see how to make a finer mesh. It only takes a second.
