Through Thick and Thin
Chapter Two

Sitting in the waiting room, Alyssa was growing more and more impatient by the minute.
“Why haven’t they come out yet?” She thought to herself.
“Are you the family of Kristin Welsh?” The doctor walked into the waiting room.
“Yes, I’m her sister.” She lied, standing up anxiously. “How is she?”
“Her condition is stable. She has a few broken ribs, a sprained ankle and a fractured wrist. Unfortunately, she’s still unconscious. There’s nothing we can do for her until she wakes up.” He explained.
“Can I see her?” Alyssa asked.
“Yes, talking to her may help her. It’s been proven to wake patients up when they have a familiar face talking to them.”
“Okay, is there anything else?”
“Nope, you can go.”
“Okay, thank you.” Alyssa practically knocked the door to her room down. She sat down next to Kristin’s bed and took her hand. “Kristin? Can you hear me? The doctor told me that if you wake up, everything will be fine. My mom went to see your parents but I don’t know if they left for Michigan already. I told the doctor I was your sister. That’s the only way he would let me see you. So, I’ve decided that you need to wake up soon, like now.” She waited for any kind of response but got none. “Oh, come on, Kristin. Can’t you just wake up please? Remember when you and Tyler first started going out? Your parents weren’t home and you guys were upstairs in your room making out and I walked in? You had been so nervous about being with him that when I walked in, I thought you were gunna murder me. We laughed about it for a while though and Cameron came over afterwards so it was fun time.”

Flashback

“C’mon Tyler. My parents aren’t home. Let’s go upstairs.” Kristin took his hand and led him up the stairs.
Not even 5 minutes later, Alyssa walks in.
“Hey, Kristin? Wanna go to the mall?” Not noticing Tyler.
“Alyssa!” Kristin screamed.
“What?” Finally noticing Tyler, she turned bright red. “Oh my God, Kristin, I’m so so sorry! I’ll leave you two alone.” She turned and ran out of the room, laughing.
“Hm, Tyler, I’ll be right back.” Kristin ran down after her. “Aly!”
“Kristin, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know he was here.” Alyssa said. “I didn’t see your parents car so I figured it was just you.”
“It’s okay, really. I mean, it’s not like it’s the first time that I’ve done that.” Kristin laughed.
“Well, Tyler thought it was funny anyways.” Alyssa smiled.
“Yeah. Alright, I’m gunna go back up there. You can invite Cameron over, if you want.” She said, referring to the guy Alyssa had started dating two days ago.
“Okay, you two have fun now.” Alyssa joked.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. If Cameron comes over, feel free to join us upstairs, it might be weird with just you and us.” Kristin told her.
“Uh huh.” Alyssa nodded and Kristin turned to run upstairs.

“Kristin, come on.” Alyssa pleaded. “You’re graduating next week. And you have to come back to see me graduate next year.” Alyssa put her head down on the bed. Suddenly, she felt Kristin’s hand move. “Kristin? Are you awake?”
“Aly?” Alyssa looked up to see Kristin’s eyes open.
“Oh my gosh. You’re okay!” She exclaimed. “Hold on, I need to call the doctor in.” She left the room and came back not even two minutes later with the doctor following closely behind.
“Hello, Kristin. How are you feeling?”
“Sore.” She replied.
“Well, that’s understandable. You have a few broken ribs, a sprained ankle and a fractured wrist.” He told her. “But, you can go home as soon as a parent comes to sign the release form.”
“Oh, um, our parents left for Michigan this morning.” Alyssa said.
“Let me just look at your file and see who the emergency contact is then.” He flipped through a couple pages and looked up. “Do you know a Sandra Holmes?”
“That’s our neighbor. Can she sign?” Alyssa asked.
“Yes. Why don’t I call her now while you get ready to go?”
“Okay, thank you.” Alyssa said, shutting the door behind him. “Oh my God, Kristin. I was so worried.”
“What happened?” Kristin asked.
“Don’t you remember?”
“All I remember is driving down Central Ave. and then calling you.”
“Oh, honey, I don’t know how it happened but somehow you drove the car into a ditch and a tree fell on top of it.” Alyssa explained.
Kristin just stared.
“Really?”
“Well, I was driving by on my way to the interview and I saw your car, so I had my mom call 911 and then she went to go see your parents while I waited with you.”
“Is that why you’re covered in mud?” Kristin asked.
“Oh, yeah, the ditch…and it was pouring rain out. It got a little muddy.” Alyssa laughed.
“Alyssa? Kristin?” A new voice came into the room.
“Hey, Mom.”
“Hi, Mrs. Holmes.”
“How are you feeling, Kristin?” She asked. “I’m fine, just a little sore.” Kristin answered. “Can I go home now?”
“Well, the doctor said that you shouldn’t be home alone for a couple days.” Mrs. Holmes said.
“I have to stay here?!” Kristin exclaimed.
“No, no, no. You’re going to be staying with us until your parents get back.” She explained.
“Really?” Alyssa asked. “That’s so cool!”
“Okay, I’m going to pull the car around. Aly, you’re gunna help her, right?”
“No, Mom, I’m gunna sit here while she nearly kills herself trying to leave.” Alyssa said sarcastically. “Of course, I’m going to help her.”
Mrs. Holmes just smiled. “I’ll be outside then.” She turned and left the room.
“Are you okay with this? I mean, staying with us?” Alyssa asked Kristin.
“Yeah! It’ll be fun.” Kristin replied.
“Well, don’t worry. My mom is totally cool with Cameron, so Tyler won’t be a problem either.” Alyssa laughed.
Kristin just laughed.
Alyssa helped her off the bed and out the door. “C’mon, let’s go home.”
