The next day, Holly awoke to her alarm clock. It was 6:00 in the morning.
“Ugh. School.” She groaned and rolled over to shut it off. She climbed out of bed and walked over into Shannen’s room. “Shannen, get up, school.” She walked back into her room and turned her radio onto 96.3 The Rose. Bowling for Soup’s Punk Rock 101 was just starting. “She works at Hot Topic, his heart’s microscopic.” She sang along while she grabbed a pair of dark blue faded flare jeans. She walked into her walk-in closet and grabbed a baby blue sleeveless shirt that said Angel across the front. “Good enough.”
~*~*~
Next door, Shannen crawled out of bed and over to her dresser. She grabbed a pair of black flare jeans. “Closet time.” She walked over to her closet and went in search of a shirt. She pulled out a sleeveless Good Charlotte shirt. “Good enough.”
~*~*~
Holly finished getting dressed and walked over to the sliding door and knocked on it.
“Shannen! You dressed?”
“Yup! Come on in!” Shannen yelled.
Holly pushed the door open and walked in.
“I need your eye shadow. I ran out.” She told her.
“Okay.” Shannen replied. She was putting her own eye shadow on.
Holly grabbed the extra light blue eye shadow and joined Shannen at the mirror. “Oh, can I use this?” Holly held up a tube of lip-gloss.
“Yeah.” Shannen nodded, “That’s the stuff from Claire’s. I bought it last night.”
“Holly! Shannen! Breakfast!” The mom called from the intercom in and hallway.
They had installed an intercom on every floor so they wouldn’t have to yell up two or three floors.
“Coming!” Shannen pressed the button and said into the speaker. “Ready?”
“Shoes.” Holly reminded her.
“Oh yeah.” Shannen remembered. She grabbed her Adidas sneakers from her closet and slid them on while Holly put her own Adidas sneakers on. “Okay, I’m ready.”
“One sec.” Holly grabbed her brush and put her hair into a single ponytail. “Okay, let’s go.” They left their rooms and ran downstairs into the kitchen.
~*~*~
They found two plates of pancakes and eggs on the table waiting for them. Their parents were watching the news in the next room.
“Morning Mom, Dad!” Holly yelled as they ran by.
“Morning girls!” They replied.
They ran into the kitchen and sat down.
“What day is it?” Holly asked.
“Uh, Day Three.” Shannen replied.
“Periods C, D, E, F, G.” Holly thought aloud. “That’s gym, ceramics, English, math, and global.”
“Yup. This is the good day.” Shannen said taking a bite of her pancakes.
“No kidding. Any day is good when we don’t have science.” Holly laughed.
“Yeah.” Shannen agreed finishing off her breakfast.
“It’s 6:30. We have fifteen minutes before we gotta go.” School started at 7:15am and it was only a fifteen-minute walk from their house so there was no bus.
“Okay, well, I need to go brush my teeth and wash up.” Holly said.
“Me too.” They ran upstairs into their bathroom to finish getting ready.
~*~*~
“Hey, Alex! Hey, Maddy!” Holly and Shannen were waiting outside for their friends so they could walk to school.
“Hey, Holly! Hey, Shannen!” They replied.
“Ready?” Holly asked.
“Yup. Let’s go.” Alex replied.
So they headed off to school.
~*~*~
“Hey, it’s gym first, right?” Alex asked as they stopped at their lockers. “Then ceramics?”
“Yeah, so we don’t need anything cause we can stop here after lunch for English and then again for math and global.” Holly replied.
“Holly, there’s something sticking out of your locker.” Shannen pointed out.
“It’s a note.” Holly unfolded it and read it aloud.
“Hey Holly, will you go to Spring Fling with me? Bryan.”
“Oh my God! He asked you! He asked you!” Alex exclaimed.
“Should I write back or just tell him?” Holly asked.
“Write.” Shannen replied.
“Hey, you guys have notes too.” Holly told them.
After a minute of reading, everyone looked up.
“Andy asked me!” Maddy exclaimed.
“Glen asked me! Alex added.
“And Dan asked me!” Shannen said.
“This is so cool.” Holly told them, “Now, we don’t have to worry about being dateless.”
“Who was worried?” Shannen asked with a laugh. Everyone laughed with her.
At that moment, the bell rang.
“Come on. We gotta get to homeroom.” Maddy said.
So they started off towards their homeroom.
~*~*~
After an hour of volleyball in gym class, the girls headed off to ceramics. The guys were in this class with them so they planned to write back then.
They walked into their class and took a seat at their usual table in the back of the room.
“Hey, um, Holly?” Bryan had come over to their table. “Can I talk to you for a minute?”
“Uh, sure.” Holly stood up and they walked out into the hall. The bell hadn’t rung so class hadn’t technically started.
“What do you think he wanted?” Shannen asked.
“I don’t know. Hopefully, he isn’t canceling on her.” Alex said.
A minute later, the bell rang and Holly and Bryan walked back in.
“Friday at 7.” He asked.
“Gym doors?” She asked.
He nodded and they sat down in their seats.
“Good morning, class. Today we will...” Mrs. White started.
“Holly!” Shannen whispered over Mrs. White’s lecture. “What did Bryan want?”
“Well, he asked if I got his note and if I wanted to go.” Holly started.
“Girls, is there something you’d like to share with the class?” Mrs. White interrupted them.
Everyone in the class turned to look at them.
“No, nothing.” Maddy replied.
“Okay, then, everyone start working on your projects.” Mrs. White turned her attention back to the class.
“Anyway.” Holly continued talking as they grabbed their supplies for their projects. “He asked me if I wanted to go to Spring Fling with him and I said yeah. So he said he’d meet me at the gym doors at 7:00 on Friday and then just before the bell rang, he asked me if I wanted to…” Holly stopped to tease the girls. “He asked me out!”
“Oh my gosh! Are you serious?” Alex exclaimed.
“Yeah and he said to meet him in the foyer before E period.” She added, “He has something for me.”
“This is so cool!” Shannen exclaimed, “I’m so happy for you!”
Holly just laughed.
~*~*~
“You guys want to eat lunch outside today?” Alex asked, “It’s really nice.”
“Sure.” Holly said. She grabbed her tray and they went outside to the courtyard.
Bryan and Dan were outside already. When he saw Holly he smiled and waved. She waved back and sat down at a table. She watched him bounce the soccer ball off the wall and keep kicking it around.
“Holly, earth to Holly.” Maddy waved a hand in from of her face.
“Huh? What?” Holly turned her attention back to her friends.
“While you were busy checking out your new boyfriend, we’ve been discussing Spring Fling.” Alex told her.”
“Okay, sorry. Uh, what do we have so far?” She asked.
“The usual. Meeting at your house at 6:00 and leaving at 6:30 so we can meet the guys at quarter of.” Alex filled her in.
“Oh, okay.” Holly nodded, “Next week is April vacation, right?”
“Yeah, why?” Shannen asked.
“I was thinking. Since we go the booth, we should have a party on Saturday. The day after Spring Fling.” Holly said.
“What booth?” Alex asked.
“Oh yeah. I forgot to tell you. Our parents bought us a DJ system for our birthday.” Holly said, “We can have Lizzie DJ.” Holly was talking about Maddy’s sister.
“A DJ booth?” Alex asked.
“Yeah, we tried it out last night.” Holly informed them. “It’s wicked cool. Come over today and check it out.”
“Sure.” Maddy and Alex agreed.
“Now party? Saturday?” Shannen asked them.
“Yeah. 8:00 – 12:00, like last time.” Alex nodded.
Just then the bell rang.
“Ah, aren’t we going to our lockers?” Maddy reminded them as they walked towards English class.
“Oh yeah.” Holly said and they turned around.
They headed to their lockers and when they reached the foyer, Holly stopped.
“Uh, guys. I’ll meet you in English. Save my usual seat for me.” She said.
They agreed and continued walking.
Holly walked over to Bryan and smiled.
“Hey.” She said, “What’s up?”
“Well, I just wanted to know since we’re going out…” Bryan started.
~*~*~
In English class, the other girls were waiting.
“She’s so lucky.” Maddy said.
“Wonder what he has for her.” Shannen said thoughtfully.
“We could always ask Andy, Dan, or Glen.” Alex pointed out.
This was another class in which the eight of them were in together.
“Nah, Holly will tell us.” Shannen said.
As if on cue, Holly and Bryan walked into the room together. Holly walked over to her seat while Bryan sat with his friends.
“Holly! What did he give you?” Alex asked.
“He just wanted to know if I wanted to wear his letter jacket.” She replied.
“So, where is it?” Shannen asked.
“In his locker, he’s gunna get it before G period since he has computer applications next door to our global studies.” Holly explained.
“Okay, class, open your reading books to chapter three.” Mr. O’Connor was saying. “I want you to read chapter three through five and write summaries for…”
“Psst. Holly.” Amanda Reynolds, who was sitting next to her, handed her a note. “Give this to Shannen.”
Holly took the note.
“Holly, can I have the note, please?” Mr. O’Connor walked over to her desk.
Holly sighed and handed it to him.
“Let’s see.” He opened it up. Mr. O’Connor was famous for reading the notes he got aloud. “Hey, Shannen, Spring Fling? Will you go out with me? Dan.” Mr. O’Connor read. “Well, Shannen, do you have anything to say for yourself?”
“Yeah, I do.” Shannen smiled, “Yes, I would love to go out with you, Dan.”
The class started giggling and Mr. O’Connor sighed.
“Whatever. Do your work.” He told the class.
“Holly, here, quick.” Amanda was handing her another note.
Holly grabbed it and handed it to Shannen. The four of them leaned over to read what it said.
“Did you mean that? Really truly? Dan.”
Shannen looked over at him and nodded, smiling.
~*~*~
“Hey Mom! We’re home!” Holly yelled as they walked into the house.
“Holly, where on Earth did you get that jacket?” Her mom walked into the living room and asked.
“It’s her new boyfriends!” Shannen taunted.
“You’ve got a boyfriend?” Her mom asked, “Since when?”
“Today.” Holly replied, “So does Shannen.”
“Uh-huh, and exactly who are these boys?”
“Bryan Matthews.” Holly replied.
“Dan Vaughan.” Shannen said.
“When do I get to meet them?” She asked.
“Well, they asked us to go ice-skating tomorrow at 4:00…so tomorrow?” Holly suggested.
“And we wanted to know if we can have a party Saturday.” Shannen asked.
“Ah, not this weekend. Aunt Julie is coming down Friday and leaving Sunday morning.” She told them.
“Okay, well, I need 6 dollars to get myself a ticket to Spring Fling.” Holly said, “Shannen too.”
“Okay, upstairs on my dresser. There’s two ten-dollar bills, just use them for lunch and tickets.” She told them.
“Thanks.” Holly said, “Well, I gotta go do homework.” She turned and ran upstairs.
“Me too.” Shannen turned and followed her up the stairs to their rooms.
