A Day in the Life
Chapter One

“Hello?” Holly McMahon answered her phone early one afternoon.
“Hey, Holly, it’s Alex.” Alex Carlson was one of Holly’s best friends.
“What’s up?” Holly flopped down onto her king-size bed and hit pause on her Sony CD player.
“Are you or Shannen working today?” Alex asked. Shannen was Holly’s twin sister but Holly was older by a minute.
“I’m not but I don’t know about Shannen.” Holly started painting her nails baby blue.
“Well, I was thinking of going shopping for Spring Fling. We’re going need clothes.” Alex laughed.
The Miami Senior High School Spring Fling was a week away and the girls had nothing to wear and no dates yet.
“Yeah, me and Shannen got our checks from the stables and WaterGrill cashed yesterday.” Holly told her, “So, I have money.” WaterGrill is a water park that has a restaurant in it and the girls all worked their as waitresses. The stables were the horse stables that were ten miles away from their houses. They worked there twice a week, grooming and taking care of the horses.
“Me too.” Alex said, “Do you know if Maddy is working today?”
“Nah, she was going to come chill with me today.” Holly put the nail polish back on the shelf. “Let me ask Shannen. Maybe we can hit the movies later.”
“Okay.” Alex replied.
“I’ll call you right back. Later.”
“Bye.”
Holly hung up the phone and walked over to Shannen’s room. The McMahon’s lived in a three-story house so Shannen and Holly had claimed the third floor as their rooms since there was only two rooms that were connecting by a sliding door and a bathroom up there. The second floor had a guestroom, a computer room, another bathroom, and a dining room that was rarely used except for family occasions and holidays. The first floor had a kitchen, living room, and a third bathroom. Their basement had been converted into a den with surround sound for the radio and two couches. Also, there was a strobe light and a disco ball. This is where the sisters had most of their parties, since they were probably the two most popular girls in their sophomore class.
“Hey, Shannen!” Holly yelled over her sister’s CD player.
Shannen turned her music of and walked over to the sliding door where Holly was standing.
“Yeah? What’s up?” She asked.
“Alex wants to go to the mall today.” Holly told her, “Are you working?”
“Nah, not today. I need some clothes for Spring Fling so sure.” She said, “Did you call Maddy?”
“Not yet. I have to call Alex back. You call Maddy.” Holly replied grabbing her phone off her bed. “Use the house line.” The girls’ parents had installed three phone lines in the house, one for the house phone, one for the computer, and one for Shannen and Holly.
“Alright, I’ll be right back.” Shannen ran out of her room and downstairs while Holly called Alex back.
~*~*~
“So, yeah, I hope Bryan asks me to Spring Fling.” Holly was telling Alex as they walked upstairs. Alex had just arrived and they were waiting for their friend, Madison Smith.
“That would be so cool.” Alex replied, “I want Glen to ask me.”
Glen Woodrow and Bryan Matthews were the captains of the soccer team at their high school.
“I wonder who Maddy wants to be ask by.” Holly said, “She never told me.”
“I think, the other day in English, she told me she wants to go with Andy King.” Alex told her.
“Oh yeah, I remember that.” Holly remembered, “That was during O’Connor’s stupid lecture. I swear I think the whole class was sleeping.”
“Me too. She’s such a bore.” Alex laughed, “Hey, Shannen.”
“Hey, Alex.” Shannen looked up from her spot in Holly’s baby blue beanbag chair where she was reading a J-14 magazine.
“What did Maddy say when you called her?” Alex asked.
“She said she’d be over in fifteen minutes.” Shannen replied.
All four girls lived on the same block. Alex lived next to Holly and Shannen and Maddy lived across the street from Alex. Maddy had three older sisters, two already in college and one in 11th grade. Alex had a brother and a sister who are both already out of high school.
“So, did Dan ask you to Spring Fling yet?” Alex asked Shannen.
Dan Vaughan was the captain of the basketball team, along with Andy King.
“Not yet, but I still have five days to hope.” She replied.
At that moment, the door opened and Maddy walked in.
“Hey, Maddy.” Holly said.
“Hey.” Maddy replied, “Are we ready to go?”
“Yeah.” Everyone stood up and followed Maddy out.
“How much longer until the next bus?” Shannen asked. The mall was only ten minutes away and the bus went right over there.
“About five minutes.” Alex answered, “Everyone got their pass?”
Everyone nodded and they walked to the corner of their street to the bus stop.
~*~*~
Twenty minutes later, the girls came out of Rave with two bags of clothes each.
“Where to next?” Maddy asked.
“Um, how about Pac Sun?” Holly suggested, “Their clothes are a little too expensive but I like their jewelry and I need a new belly ring.”
“I need a new one too.” Shannen agreed.
“Okay, let’s go.” Maddy said.
They set off down the mall to continue their shopping.
~*~*~
“Hey! Let’s go rock climbing!” Holly pointed to the big wall in the middle of the food court.
“Yeah!” Shannen exclaimed.
They ran over to the wall and got in the line. There was only one person in front of them and they were on their way down the wall.
“Four?” The cashier asked.
“Yup.” Alex replied.
“Okay, I can take two on the easy side.” She said, “Who wants them?”
“Me.” Maddy said.
“Uh, I’ll take it too.” Alex volunteered.
“Okay, I’ll give you the harder easy one.” The cashier told Alex.
“Okay.” Alex nodded.
“Now, do you want the intermediate sides?” Another worker asked Shannen and Holly.
“Yeah.” They replied in unison.
“Who wants the harder one?”
“I’ll take it.” Holly volunteered.
“Okay, everyone ready?” The cashier asked.
“Ready.” They replied together.
“Okay, ready, set, go!” She blew the horn and they started climbing.
“Buuzzz!” Holly had reached the top first with Shannen a second behind her, then Alex and finally Maddy.
“Great job, guys. You’re really good. There’s a competition coming up at Universal Studios. You should definitely try-out for it.” The cashier told them.
“That sounds cool. I think I’ll try.” Holly said.
“Me too.” Shannen agreed.
“Yeah.” Maddy and Alex added together.
“Well, here are some flyers and permission slips.” They received their forms and left.
~*~*~
“Come on, let’s get some food.” Holly said, “It’s almost 5:00.”
“5:00? We’re only been here for two hours?” Alex asked, “Wow.”
“Yeah and the movies all start at 6:00 so we still have time to eat and decide what we want to see.” Shannen pointed out.
They all headed over to the KFC and Burger King to order their food.
~*~*~
“So, we’re agreed?” Shannen asked, “2 Fast 2 Furious?” Everyone nodded.
“Well, let’s go. It starts in ten minutes.”
They all got up and walked to the movies.
~*~*~
When they got there, there was no line so they got their tickets and walked in.
“Oh my gosh.” Maddy try to hide behind Holly. “There’s Andy.”
Too late, Andy had seen her and come over. “Hey, Maddy.”
“Uh, hey, Andy.” She came out from behind Holly.
“What are you guys going to see?” He asked them.
“2 Fast 2 Furious.” Holly replied.
“Cool, us too.” Andy told them.
“Us? Who’s us?” Shannen asked.
“Bryan, Dan, Glen, and me.” He answered.
“That’s cool.” Shannen replied.
“Yeah, you guys should join us.” Andy said.
“Maybe we will.” Holly told him.
“You mean, yes, we will.” Shannen elbowed Holly in the side.
“Well, come on.” Andy told them as he waved his friends over and headed towards the theater.
The girls just giggled and followed them.
~*~*~
About two hours later, the right of them walked out of the theater.
“That was a great movie.” Shannen said.
“Yeah.” Andy agreed, “I’m glad you guys decided to come with us.”
“Me too.” Maddy replied.
“Yeah, well, it’s after 7:00 and I told my mom I’d be home by 7:30.” Alex announced, “Since we do have school tomorrow.”
“Oh yeah, that’s loads of fun.” Holly said sarcastically.
“Okay, well, see you tomorrow.” Bryan replied.
“Bye.” The girls waved and left.
~*~*~
“I call shower first!” Holly exclaimed as they ran home from the bus stop.
“I’ll just use the downstairs one.” Shannen replied. They walked in the front door and into the kitchen.
“Hey, Mom! We’re home!” Shannen yelled when the found the kitchen empty.
“In the basement!” They heard their mother reply.
They ran downstairs and into the basement.
“Whoa!” Holly stopped at the sight of the room. Shannen just stared.
“Surprise!” Their parents exclaimed.
“Is this for us?” Shannen asked.
“Yeah, since we didn’t really get you guys a birthday present last month, we decided this was appropriate.” Their dad told them.
It was a huge brand new, DJ system; the whole deal. They practically tackled their parents with hugs.
“Mom! Dad! It’s great!” Holly exclaimed, “Thank you so much!”
“It’s awesome!” Shannen added.
“Okay, okay.” The mom laughed.
“This is so cool!” Shannen was already behind the booth, checking it out. All of their CDs were down there too. “Can I try it?”
“Sure.” Their dad replied.
Shannen put on the headphones, one off her ear, and put a CD in. She hit play and Good Charlotte came on.
“That’s so cool!” Holly exclaimed.
