Jeff looked at the time on the schedule. The train heading to Montreal was departing in five minutes. He looked down at the ticket he held in his hands. He thought a minute. He wondered why he was leaving. He thought about what he was doing. When he looked up, the train was there. He lifted his bag over his shoulder and climbed onto the train, handing the ticket to the conductor. He sat in a seat next to a window and looked out. There was a couple, a young couple that looked about his and Dakota’s ages. The two held each other in a tearful hug for a moment before the conductor yelled, "ALL ABOARD!" At that moment, the man climbed onto the train, with the girl waving tearfully. And as the train pulled out of the station, that girl chased the train. The man called out the window that he loved the girl and that made Jeff think. The train had one more stop to make, in the neighboring town. After that, it was an express train headed straight for Montreal. After about ten minutes, the train stopped. Jeff whispered to himself, "What am I doing?"

Dakota walked around the house in a daze all that day. Jeff had once again left her, as she feared he would. The boys had rented a movie, and Dakota sat with them, in Edge’s arms, along with Christian, Melissa and Matt. That day they watched a few horror movies, but mostly comedies to try and cheer up Dakota. "Come on Little One, cheer up. He said he’d be back." Matt looked at Edge and Dakota. He crawled onto the floor and hugged Dakota. "If my brother says that he’ll be back, he will be. He always keeps his word." Dakota hugged Matt back. "Thanks Matt, Edge." The three sat on the floor, both men hugging that one little girl in the middle. One girl, that had been through so much. Dakota snuggled into Edge’s arms and proceeded to watch the movie. She finally laughed and Edge squeezed her tight. She grinned and had a good day for the remainder of the day.

That night, nobody went to sleep, except for Melissa and Dakota. They were sound asleep by midnight. Edge carried Dakota up to bed, and tucked her in. Her sheets had been changed, her blanket washed, and he window opened. She snuggled into her pillow, pulling the teddy bear that Jeff had given her close to her and falling silent. Edge looked at her for a moment, and then went off to bed himself. Melissa and Christian slept on the couch, as they were already there, and Matt fell asleep in his own bed by 1:00 in the morning. And as Christian fell asleep, the last thought that passed through his head was that he must make Melissa what he was, and there was no way around it.

When Dakota awoke the next morning, she was in Jeff’s room, on Jeff’s bed. She lay back, alone, scared, and hungry. She crawled out of bed and wrapped herself in Jeff’s black velvet blanket. She looked out his window. A hawk flew up into the sky and circled for a moment before its mate joined it. The two birds flew off into the rising sun. Dakota longed to sprout wings and fly off into the sun with them. But Dakota knew she couldn’t leave. If she left, he would come back. That was the way the world worked, and she knew that all to well.

Down the hall and a little to the left in Gangrel’s old room, Melissa paced back and forth, wrapped in her deep purple velvet blanket. She wanted to go out, go out and learn her surroundings, but nobody was home, except for Dakota, and she didn’t want to disturb her. Dakota was suffering from a severely broken heart. Melissa glanced outside at the rising sun, noticing two hawks fly into the distance. ‘Dakota and Jeff,’ she thought. ‘Me and Christian.’
