Christian opened the door to the house which he, Gabrielle, and Edge once lived, letting her walk in past him. He grabbed her jacket, tossing it on the hall table along with his. She glanced at him before she headed to the open living room, looking from one end to the other. Gabrielle walked over to the couch, the same couch from her flashback, and sat down. She looked up at Christian as he leaned himself on the doorway, watching her. "I remember this room," she smiled brightly. "This was the room from my vision."
He beamed at her enthusiasm. This is was where she belonged; he knew it now more than ever. Everything he was doing was going to pay off. It all meant something, to the both of them. He watched as she got up, heading to the fireplace to look at all the knick-knacks that were collected on its mantel. He grinned proudly at himself. He was glad he had gotten rid of all of Edge’s things. He knew sooner or later, she’d want to visit her old home. Anything of Edge’s that may have been there could have triggered an old memory or feeling and he couldn’t bear that. So he got rid of everything. All of his clothes and prized possessions, even the things they shared. Nothing could be left behind, and nothing could be left to chance.
She walked past him, back into the hall and glanced upstairs. "What’s up there?"
"Bedrooms mainly…"
"Can I?" she asked softly cutting in.
Christian nodded, following her up the oak staircase. He could smell her perfume in the air as they reached the top.
Gabrielle felt so at ease there, feeling like she’d been in this same place a million times before. Her footsteps echoed on the hardwood floors as she reached her bedroom door, turning the knob. She stretched her hand inside, flicked on the light switch, and stepped in. She traced a finger on the dark burgundy velvet bedspread, letting all her memories slowly come to her. Little by little, her memories started filling her head. It was like nothing she’d ever felt before.
"I haven’t moved anything since you’d been gone," Christian told her, appearing in her room. "It’s just the way you left it."
This was a pleasant change from living at Ravens. Living in a house, having her own privacy, her own cherished possessions was what she wanted once again. She didn’t want the life she had with Raven, not there anyway. She wanted a life like this one, a life she deserved, but she couldn’t just leave him. She couldn’t leave Raven to live in the sewers all alone. No one to talk to or be with. It wasn’t good for anyone.
Gabrielle picked up a thin gold chain from her dresser, a golden heart cracked in two dangling from the end of it. She turned to Christian, her face beaming as she remembered the first time she’d seen it in the store window. "You gave this to me?"
He laughed as he approached her. He took the chain in his two hands and placed it around her neck, doing up the clasp. "It was one of your favorites." She turned around to face him, too get his approval. "It looks perfect. Just as it did before."
Gabrielle looked past him, on the nightstand and finally for the first time that night had seen what time it was. 4:53AM. "I didn’t realize how late it was," she told him softly. "I should be getting home…"
"Are you sure you can’t stay?" Christian cut in, as he followed her out the bedroom door.
She walked downstairs, grabbing her jacket, smiling as Christian helped her put it on. "I’m staying with a friend, and he’ll be worried if I don’t come home."
He opened the door for her, pausing as she turned to face him again. "Will I see you again?" he asked her.
She pulled him close, kissing him tenderly before turning to head home. "You will."
Gabrielle thought all about Christian on her way home. The way he smiled at her was thrilling. She grabbed at her chain, stroking the gold in her fingertips. When Christian had put it on her, she knew he loved her, more than anyone before. She could feel all his feelings and emotions, all their memories, and knew they were meant to be. Now the only thing that stood between her and Christian’s happiness was Raven. She had to tell him of Christian and about her past life, in that home with him. She wanted to go back to Christian tonight, but knew she couldn’t. Not before she settled things with the one who’d watched her this whole time.
Her thoughts trailed off as she neared the entrance to Ravens home, seeing Spider and Kael waiting there… for her?
She walked over to Spider, confused upon all things. "What are you doing here?"
Spider stood up, handing her half finished cigarette to Kael. She slowly headed towards Gabrielle, anger on her face. "I told you when you were ready I’d tell you everything…" She headed backwards down the road, never taking her eyes off of Gabrielle. "You’re ready!"
Kael tossed down the cigarette, stepping on it irately. He didn’t like any of this. They had the money, they had what they wanted. He didn’t want them to be involved, but when Spider was angry, like this, there was no stopping her. He turned to follow her, if he were there, she’d be safe. Raven was close by and Kael knew he could come out at any moment, in fact he wished it. Then he would have the perfect excuse to end his life right there. He turned to Gabrielle, the muscles in his jaw tensing. "You coming?"
**
It was almost 6AM when Gabrielle finally went home. She entered her room, blank faced, remembering everything Spider had told her. She stopped at her bed, seeing Raven still in it as she had left him. She kicked off her shoes, and dropped her jacket on the ground next to her feet. It had been a long night, a night like she’d never known before. Every emotion ran through her as she reached for her waistband, unbuttoning her pants. She stopped suddenly, doing up her pants again. She lay on her bed, over the covers and edged her way to the end of the bed, the furthest corner from Raven. She closed her eyes, clutching herself from the cold. After what had happened, after what she had heard from Spider, she did not want to be touched by anyone… especially Raven.
He rolled over, turning from her and grabbing the pillow tighter. "You’re back late," he mumbled without opening his eyes.
She lay there, looking up at the cracked ceiling, listening to Ravens breaths beside her. "I had some stuff to do," she told him blankly. "Go back to sleep."
Gabrielle lay there for the next few hours, thinking about what she now knew, and all the ways she’d been deceived before. She now knew the truth, all of it. She thought the truth would fix everything. As much as she’d wanted to know, as much as she’d been fishing for the truth, hearing it just made it all worse. She had now known everything she’d ever wanted to know, she felt as if her world was slowly starting to crumble around her. It was time to fix things, time to take her life back and make them all wish they’d never played with her existence.
She turned over and closed her eyes, finally getting some rest that night. They’d pay for what they’d done, she promised herself. She’d take her life back, and take theirs for the fun of it, like they had taken hers.
