"This sucks. Next time we're not letting Adam pick the movies."
"Well, I'm terrified. " Adam announced from the large plush chair, his eyes still glued to the screen, visibly wide with fright.
"Geez, its just a movie, man." Matt grumbled, fumbling for the remote. Before he could shut it off, the television screen went black, followed by a loud static like noise before shutting off. Jeff sighed after Matt tried to turn it back on, cursing when it wouldn't work.
"It does that sometimes. You just gotta leave it alone, and it'll start working again." Jeff explained with a misplaced air of nervousness. Christian, who had been staring at Jeff without the notice of the other two, now tore his eyes away with a concerned look.
"Well…we should go trick or treating then." Matt suggested, causing Christian to glance back up at Jeff, both of them bursting into laughter at the idea. Adam and Matt shot them odd looks, and once the laughter was under control - and the tears wiped - Christian decided to explain.
"Matt, my friend. I really don't think you need any more candy…" Jeff gestured to the bowl of wrapped chocolate and Starburst that was intended for the sparse turn out of masquerading children, rather than his brother, who had it placed squarely in his lap. He jumped at the loud bang on the door, followed by some scratching.
"Was that a knock?" Matt asked tentatively, starting to get to his feet. Jeff shrugged.
"Sounded like it. Or its Liger at the door."
"You let your dog stay out tonight?" Adam asked with shock. Jeff just rolled his eyes.
"He does have that cute little dog house for sanctuary, you know." The scratching continued, now obviously from the front of the house, while there was knocking at the back door, growing louder and more impatient, now coupled with the muffled yells of small children. "Matt, kids want candy too. I'll get Liger."
"Fine." He grumbled, stomping off, candy in tow to the back door while Jeff took to the front.
"You're screwing Jeff, aren't you?" Adam asked Christian as soon as they were out of vocal range, with a glint of amusement in his eyes. Christian, with a well practised reaction, shook his head and laughed it off.
"No! Geez Adam, why'd you say a thing like that?"
"You sighed like a lovesick teenager when he left the room. You were staring at him before like you wanted to jump him then and there, and you two shared a cute little private joke without words. I've known you for long enough to - " He stopped short as Jeff's footsteps came closer, noticeably alone.
"Dogs fine. Just wanted a little attention." He explained, sitting down on the floor beside Christian. "Matt still feeding little costumed rugrats?" Christian shrugged.
"Must be, cause he's not in here." He told Jeff as casually as possible, while Adam watched with a Cheshire grin. "Oh…and…Adam knows."
"Knows what?" Jeff laughed nervously, running a hand through his multicoloured hair.
"I knew it!" Adam exclaimed, still grinning. "I knew there was something going on. You two spend way too much time together to be just 'getting a bite to eat', or 'taking a walk'. But at least when you two said you were going to the gym, you were getting a workout." He added thoughtfully, while Jeff waved a hand, signalling for him to quiet down as the heavy footsteps of his brother grew nearer in the hall, then started away, back towards the laundry room again.
"What is that dumbass doing?" Jeff mumbled, then jumped when the door slammed.
"Who knows? Fighting with some kids about candy? That’s his style." Adam remarked, trying to peer down the hall and into the laundry room. "Wait, I didn’t hear another knock. He better not be trying to escape on us." He rose, stalking halfway down the hall to retrieve Matt before stopping short at the sound of the metal bowl clattering against the tiled floor, and he noticed the door had closed without a sound. "Matt, stop fucking around." He yelled nervously, continuing nearer to the door thinking that maybe Matt was just having a little fun, getting into the spirit of the season. Jeff and Christian came to stand in the hallway, both eyeing Adam and the door in front of him warily. There was an unspoken knowledge between all of them. Matt never fucked around.
