Raven had taught her early in life that their kind was far superior to humans, and whenever given a chance, they should prey on the weak. That is how they have all been taught, all who live in Ravens home.
She looked over at the curtains; she could see small rays of light trying to find their way inside through the heavy fabric. ‘The sun hasn’t gone down yet’ she thought to herself getting out of bed, feeling the urge to feed. She threw off her covers, pulling on the closest pair of jeans and made her way out to the main room. She found Raven there, sitting in his same chair, and looked as if, smoking the same cigarette. Several of the young ones played around him as the smoke gently cascaded out his nostrils.
Without even looking up, he knew Kendall was there… watching him.
"You’ve got the hunger," he told her, rolling his cigarette between his fingers. He glanced up for a brief second, his eyes hidden behind a pair of dark sunglasses. "I can feel it."
She walked past the children and over to the front gate, looking up to catch a glimpse of the world above her… or at least the small part that she could see through the sewer grate.
"You’re thinking of them?" Raven asked. Kendall turned slightly to face him; an unusual expression came over him. One she had never seen before. "You’re thinking of the others."
"Yes I am," she confessed, glancing up again. She could feel the heat, the fresh air, all pushing its way down the shaft to where she stood, begging her to come up top.
"It’s not safe." Raven warned, butting out the last of his cigarette on the wooden arm of his chair. He took off his sunglasses, dropping them to his lap, so that he could see her more clearly; or rather, what she was thinking.
"What isn’t Raven." She questioned.
"What you’re thinking." He replied plainly. "It’s not safe."
The evening sun bad just barely gone down when the sleek black roadster barrelled down the alley, knocking down trash cans, barely missing a cat in its path.
Kael looked back from his driver’s side window. Peeking through the chipped black painted window, he could see the cat scurrying away. "Dammit" he muttered childishly, griping the steering wheel tighter in his hands. "I missed that one."
Kael looked over to his passengers seat. He watched Kendall for a brief moment, staring out the window, running her fingers down the cold glass next to her. Kael leaned in closer, looking out the windshield, then back at her, a confused look on his face. "What in the bloody hell are you looking at?"
"Nothing," she answered simply, still focusing her attention outside. "Just thinking."
Kael waited for her to continue but when it was obvious that she wasn’t, he broke down frustratedly. "Well what then?"
"About what Raven told me," she replied pulling a dark curl from her face. "About the others, like us. About how they are. How they live, about everything."
Kael skidded down the trash-infested alley, garbage flying behind them as he made a sharp turn at the corner, now heading downtown.
He rested his free hand behind Kendalls neck, massaging it gently, his eyes still on the road. "Don’t worry your pretty little head about it." Kael told her softly, as he raced to hit another cat. "DAMMIT!" he yelled again, punching the steering wheel before taking a long breath, now focusing again on Kendall.
"Listen Spider, they’re not like us," he informed her, his free hand moving down to rest on her thigh. "Edge and Christian are two temperamental bastards who change like hot and cold, and that Gabrielle…" he paused to find the right words. "…Well that bitch doesn’t even know what she wants. First she wants Edge, then Christian. I’m surprised she didn’t try having a go at me."
"Kendall turned to face him, a million questions all running in her head. Raven had always warned them all to stay away from ‘the others’ as he called them. He had said that if any of the others had caught any of them alone, they would attack and not give up till all of Ravens clan was dead. Raven wasn’t afraid of them, that were the furthest from the truth. Raven was a thinker. One who liked to study his enemies; see what made them tick, what makes them happy and in turn, what would drive them over the edge…using that to his advantage.
Raven had always told them that one-day, he’d get rid of all the others, that was the day he usually referred to as D-Day. The Day of the Dead. The day you celebrate they deaths of the ones before you.
"Take me to them," Kendall told Kael, a small smirk appearing on her face. "I want to see the others."
Edge sprawled out on the living room couch, turning on the television set. He looked over at Gabrielle, who had fallen asleep, curled up on the love seat a few hours before. Edge turned his head slightly, felling an uneasy presence around him that he couldn’t put his finger on. It was something, or someone he knew all to well. He got up, heading for the window. He slowly drew back the curtains, taking a peek outside to the quiet street. There was nothing different about it. Nothing that stood out of place but he could feel the presence getting stronger with each second.
"Edge?" his brother Christian called frantically from the other room. "Where are you?"
Edge ducked into the hall finding his brother with the same confused look he was sporting. Both of them, feeling lost.
"You sense it too, don’t you?" Christian asked his brother worriedly. Edge grabbed Christian’s arm, pulling him into the other room, as to not wake Gabrielle.
"Yeah I feel it man," Edge told him, turning to look out the window facing the street, seeing only a dark roadster parked outside, the windows completely blacked out.
Christian grabbed Edge shoulder, turning Edge to face him. "Well what the hell is it?" Christian asked impatiently. "What the hell is making us feel this way?"
Edge opened his mouth to answer but paused when there was a soft rapping at the door. "I don’t know, but I have a feeling were just about to find out." Edge poked his head into the living room, to make sure Gabrielle was still sleeping, then turned to answer the door. "Watch her" he ordered his brother as he reached for the doorknob. Edge swung open the door, surprised at what, or shall I say who he saw. "You?"
Kael stood there, grinning, brandishing a bottle of aged Whisky in front of him. "Aren’t you going to invite me in?"
