Gabrielle lay in Edge’s arms after a passion filled evening. She licked a trickle of blood that led from the place she had drunk from him. She rolled to her side facing away from him. The window was open and the breeze caught the heavy curtain, causing it to billow like a balloon. As sleep crept into her mind, she was startled by Edge’s voice.

"What was that all about this morning?"

"What was what all about?"

"Don’t play dumb. In the kitchen. The cabinets, that little fit… What was that all about?"

"Oh… well, I guess I just expected some differences." She turned to him and propped herself on her elbow, resting her head in her hand. "Like I said, it’s been twenty years, and although we have the privilege of not aging physically, we can still grow up mentally. It was just strange to me that everything was still the same, that Christian is still the same, that you are still the same."

"We’re not the same Gabby…"

"Yeah, you are."

"Oh, and you’ve morphed into some sort of higher being? Is that it?"

"No, Edge, you’re taking this all wrong."

"Well, how am I supposed to take it? You leave us just hanging, barely even say goodbye. Not a word for twenty years, and suddenly you show back up. You know all we wanted was for you to be with us. How could we change anything, especially ourselves, when that’s all we could think about, all we could dream about. We barely functioned without you here!"

"I realize that, but what did you do? I mean, didn’t you travel any? Or try and meet someone new? There has to be other vampires out there you could have tried to contact. You could have found happiness for yourselves without me. I mean, I moved on, why couldn’t you?"

"You moved on? What does that mean?"

"Just that I was able to find happiness on my own, with others…"

Edge interrupted her, sitting up sharply. "Others?"

Gabrielle sat up sighing. "I guess now is as good a time as any to tell you. I really wanted to wait until I’d been here a little longer, but well, here goes. When I was in Wales, I ran into Kale. We hung out for a while and well, we ended up sleeping together."

Edge leapt from the bed. Rage pulsing through his veins. "You did what?! How could you!? Kale is nothing but a cheat and a liar and, and, just scum. I don’t believe this! Gabrielle, that is so not like you! How can you do something like that to us?"

"Excuse me," Gabrielle said standing up, seething, "This is exactly what I was talking about. I have changed. Do you not realize that even now? It’s been TWENTY years. I moved on. I discovered new places, new people, new things about myself…" "But KALE?!? Come on! You can’t be serious!"

"Edge, I am very serious. This is what I mean. I’m gone for a very long time, and then I come back and you are just the same egotistical, jealous person you were when I left." Gabrielle gathered her clothes from the floor and dresses. "I’m going to bed now. You can get over this and we’ll talk about it later, or we can just drop it. You decide. I’m not dealing with this now though, it’s late and I’m tired. Good night."

As she slammed the door to Edge’s room, he sunk down on the bed resting his head in his hands. "God, not Kale. Anyone except Kale…."
