Rhythmstx Musician's Studio Battle of the Bands 2nd place winners, One Side delivers their audience punk rawk with a 50's rock feel. One Side is known throughout Southern California for their energetic performances and matching stage clothing, which has worked for them very well and has gained them quite a following. Not only do they dress alike, but they also sound alike which made figuring out which one of them was talking all that more difficult. So we decided to call them all OS...

Gilbert: OK, I'm here with a wonderful band that means so much to me, Oneside.  Please Oneside state your name and what you guys do starting with Brandon.

OS: Uh, were Oneside we play metal for Jesus.

Gilbert: What do you do?

OS: Well when I say we, I mean me and my other personalities, so part of me plays the drums, part of me is a metal militia freak who sleeps in a bed made out of metal, the other part of me writes some lyrics, some of me wakes up in the morning, the rest of me stays asleep all day.

Gilbert: What do you do Ryan play guitar?

OS: Yeah, I play guitar and sing. Sometimes and I don't know what Brandon is thinking, but I think he watched a little too much Spinal Tap before we left.

(Laughter all around)

OS: Yes!

OS: We're really a punk rawk band / rock n' roll.

OS: Hi! I'm Duncan and I play guitar too and sing back up vocals and sing some songs, yah.

OS: I'm Ricky I play bass and I sing.

Gilbert: (sigh) That's awesome, can you guys tell me how the band got started maybe some background, you know break it down in sylables you know, solid words?

OS: I got a couple words.

OS: Me and Duncan started playing some instruments.  At the end of eighth grade we got together, been together ever since, about four years.  We had a three piece band going on for awhile, didn't really work out. Our bass player moved then we got Ricky, he was from a ska band  called Catch 22 they were huge in Europe. Uh we got him in the band and then Ryan was also in a band, he's been in many aray of bands, and his band was going pretty good but their walks weren't doing all that good, so they broke up and we got him as second guitarist. Oneside has been around since, well, Oneside has been around since November '99 but a four piece we've been around since, what March of Febuary '99. So yeah were a four piece Rock n' Roll band.

Gilbert: Awesome. So uh, can you guys tell me some of the stuff that God has been doing through you guys?

OS: Ryan got a Marshal, Ricky got a new bass.

OS: We've playing alot of shows.

OS: Yah.

OS:  God's given us everything.  God holds this band together, that Guy's amazing, we love Him.  We love Him alot.

OS: I like the Guy.

OS: Great Guy! Great Guy!

OS: Nice Guy!

"...we're still not signed and that gets us distraught."

Gilbert: Can you tell us about some of the shows you've been playing, like Battle of the Bands, Pharoes (Pharoes Lost Kingdom, Ca), Showcase (California) and some of the exciting things you look forward to, that just drive you to wake up every stink'n morning?

(silence, then laughter)

OS: Slick Shoes is great.

OS: Slick Shoes and Plankeye.

Gilbert: Yah, I was there!

OS: Best show though  I gotta go, I don't know I like Stavesacre.

OS: I like Stavesacre.

OS: At the Showcase.

OS: Um, Pharoes um nobody is ever going to know about it, no one is ever hear it, we never played at Pharoes as far as you're concerned ,you bring it up one more time we walk out of the building right now.  (Laughter)

"Ryan keeps our style going..."

OS: Victorville (Ca) shows are great because we get to hang out with Out of Place the best band in America.

OS: Glam Rock superstars!

OS: I like our local shows when we played with Say When.

OS: Oh Say When is the best Orange County band, by far.

Gilbert: Yah, we would have played but we were in Mexico (sigh).  It was awesome though, back to you guys, so tell me um how is playing with some many different styles? I know Brandon is a freak and all.

OS: I'm a Metal militia.

OS: You're not a Metal militia.

Gilbert: Duncan likes Celtic hymns and Ricky likes Joy Electric and uh.

OS: He's got that Polka, Techno thing going  they call it "Teka".

OS: And I'm just straight Country.

OS: But when we come together we form Oneside a punk band.

Gilbert: How is Oneside doing for you guys like, how is everybody's input, like how does it work and who does what?

OS: Ryan's nose is bleeding.

OS: Oh, my gosh! (laughter)

Gilbert: Ryan's nose is bleeding right now as he's eating his taco, it's the desert.

OS: This is going to be on the internet.

OS: I can't believe you got a bloody nose.

Gilbert: Oh, my gosh!

OS: Look at that!

Gilbert: It's like dripping down his face.

OS: Somebody socked him right in his nose.

Gilbert: So, who puts the input into the band?

OS: Ricky keeps the band in line.

OS: He kind of beats up every practice.

OS: Ricky keeps us acountable.

OS: Ryan keeps our style going, he forced me to take off my dirty Converse.

OS: And put on some creepers, without Ryan we would have no image at all.

OS: His biggest influence is Ricky Martin that's what gives us style and then me and Duncan are just here for the ride since we started the band.

OS: Whoa, dude sick, Stavesacre is on TV right now.

OS: Right behind us, distracting us, I can't even see Derek Lemenes (Stavesacre)  is in the way.

Gilbert: So tell us some of your influences?

OS: (Burp)

Gilbert: (laughs) That's awesome!

OS: MxPx and Op. Ivy, that's what started it.

OS: That's what started the band, but back in our history Operation Ivy they were upstrung.

OS: A little bit Minor Threat, you know.

OS: We're not into that.

OS: Now we're straight Face to Face, MxPx.

OS: Not even MxPx I'm going Face to Face, Fan Mail.

OS: Greenday.

OS: We don't want to sound like MxPx but they are great guys.

OS: They are we love em'.

OS: They're my favorite band.

OS:They're my favorite band.

OS: Put that on there, MxPx is my favorite band.

"MxPx is my favorite band"

Gilbert: They are Trademark's too.

OS: This is Ricky, I like MxPx.

Gilbert: So what are you guys saying your style is? Because you guys are Rockstars on stage, you guys all have that stage performance down.  What's going through your mind on stage?

OS: Um, make the kids go wild.

OS: That's all we want to do, we like the kids.

OS: I just focus on metal, pure metal.

OS: Would you stop with the death poisoning.

OS: Anything that is metal I think about while I play drums.

Gilbert: Anything coming up for you guys?

OS: We sent a demo to Rock City recordings, it's a company that Mike Herrera (MxPx) started and they actually wrote us back, saying they loved the demo but we're not what they are looking for, so I of course sent them a bomb threat and ordered alot of stuff from them.

OS: Brandon is the Uni-bomber.

OS: They sent me the stuff, I don't know how the bomb went through but we're still not signed and that gets us distraught.

Gilbert: Who do you want to get signed with? Because you guys are any day now.

OS: We're hoping Gun Show.

OS: We're hoping Gun Show.

OS: Gun Show, if you're on the internet sign us.

OS: Dirk Lemenes you're playing right behind us right now

Gilbert: So is there any shows that you're looking forward to?

OS: The Orange County show and Newport Beach.  Just hopefully Tim Mann and Dirk Lemenes will be there.

(laughter)

Gilbert: Is that with Say When?

OS: Um, no.

OS: No possibly.

OS: Actually we probably will get Say When.

Gilbert: I wanted to play that show so bad you guys, you know that.

OS: We'll play it.

OS: Possibly Out of Place I heard too.

OS: Out of Place is actually our biggest influence.

OS: We want to go to Mexico.

Gilbert: You guys get me sick dude.  Anyways, back to you guys.  Since Ryan's nose stopped bleeding, ya like I said this is going on the internet any last words you can tell your fans, and  anybody that's listening out there on the internet?

OS: I'd like to say that Gun Show recordings is the best record company out there, but if you're looking to sign a band and you're not Gun Show we're looking to get signed.

OS: We like Bettie Rockit.

OS: There's nothing wrong with Bettie Rockit, Sick of Change.

OS: Nothing, I love Bettie Rockit.

OS: Basically the main point we want to get on the internet is we want to get signed.

Gilbert: How do you guys feel about your performance and everything in general?

OS: I just hate it when my fingers bleed, my fingers bleed everytime, I think I learned how to fix it though.

OS: I hate it when my amp falls over, when I'm trying to go crazy.

Gilbert: How is it playing as a band?  Because you are like awesome.

OS: We love it.

OS: I think it's better at practice then it is at shows.

OS: No way.

Gilbert: You guys are the best guys in the world and you don't even understand it.

"It's all about Rock n'Roll and Skinny Elvis."

OS: I think we're all really close.

OS: It's just fun crap.

OS: We love each other.

OS: Just fun crap.

OS: Yeah.

OS: Fun crap. (laughter)

OS: I would say it's liquid metal but liquid metal is a little better.

OS: No, we're cold.

Gilbert: You guys got the thing going on like you just come in matching creepers, matching pants, matching shirts.

OS: We're in sync.

OS: We're Rock'n.

OS: We are N'Sync.

OS: It's all about style like I say.

Gilbert: It's all about style that's what I say.  It's the different punk scene, it's the 'we like to take showers punk.'

OS: Yeah.

OS: Yeah.

OS: Yeah.

OS: Yeah, It's more Rock n'Roll, like Skinny Elvis.

Gilbert: It's all about Rock n'Roll dude.

OS: We enjoy Skinny Elvis.

OS: It's all about Rock n'Roll.

OS: It's all about Rock n'Roll and Skinny Elvis.

OS: Yeah, yeah OK this our future band, when we're fifty years old we're going to start a Rockabilly band named Skinny Elvis.

Gilbert: My brother is psycho about Rockabilly, you know my brother Pompidor, yeah Reverend Horton Heat guy.

OS: I'm gonna get a stand up bass with flames on it and stand on it at the same time while I play.

OS: I'm gonna get a three piece drumset and a three piece suit.

Gilbert: Anyways Duncan what we're you saying?

OS: Actually I wasn't saying nothing.

OS: Duncan is the band leader, you wouldn't know it but he's the band leader.

OS:Duncan likes Bach.

Gilbert: So we're do you want to see One Side go?

OS: I'd like to see us wherever God's will is, in the future someday on MTV preaching it.

OS: I'd like to be the biggest underground band there is, can I say that?  The biggest underground band there is, that's my goal.

OS: I don't want to even be called underground, I want to be called the trendiest band ever.

OS: That's not me.

OS: Rich and famous.

Gilbert: Don't worry they're here today you guys are playing with them, they're here today.

OS: Only because of God.

Gilbert: That's awesome.

OS: We're gonna go wherever the Lord takes us.

OS: If God wants us to break up tommorow we'll break up.

Gilbert: No Compromise.

OS: If he tells me to stop listening to metal, I'll do it.

OS: I will always praise you, you know.

Gilbert: Hey Ricky, your Joy Electric is on.

OS: That's a cute video.

OS: We actually played with Joy Electric I'd like to say that.

Gilbert: How was that?

OS: It was good.

OS: Actually it was before Ryan and I were in the band.

OS: Yeah it was me and Duncan, it was really nice.

OS: We don't like to talk about it.

OS: It was like Disco beats, party.

OS: I liked it.

Gilbert: I like Joy Electric.

OS: We've played with Spivies too.

OS: Several times.

OS: They're nice guys.

Gilbert: So give us some last words to tell the people out there like anything that's on your hearts that you just wanna like say, you know like your last goodbye kind of like you know keep your eyes on God, like we're about Punk rawk, we're like you know.

OS: I think you just said right there.

OS: You pretty much summed up everything we were gonna say.

OS: Yeah.

Gilbert: Thank you One Side.

OS: Thanks.
