"YOU ARE UGLY"

Welcome to the Underground!!!

By Dea Evenbeck

What exactly is the underground supposed to be about? It's supposed to be about supporting the music we love, supporting each other, making life long friends, and being able to trust one another. Am I wrong??

Trust. What is it? Finding a friend that not only shares the undying love for music, but also someone whom you can respect and respects you back, someone you can count on to always be there, someone who you know would never do anything to hurt you.

Why does it seem that the underground has become polluted by traitors? People who do something relatively small in the underground suddenly change and get these big inflated ideas that they are Queens (or Kings) of the scene? They have this fantasy that they are some sort of huge entity. They blow off their friends for no reason, talk shit about them, and then expect to gain the respect of the scene by putting down those who have been here for years. They seem to forget that a mere year ago, they were kissing these people's asses, asking them for advice. They seem to forget that the same people they talk shit about now, they once called a "great friend". Now they just sit around with their noses high up in the air, and black metal swords shoved up their asses, acting as if their shit don't stink!

Another thing is that lately, bands who get a bad review decide to go on a shit talking spree. Poking fun at the looks and intelligence of the person who did not give them a rave review. If you are in a band, you are putting yourself, and your music on the line. Everyone is going to judge, and opinions do vary. If every person on this earth liked the same style of music, this world would be a very boring place. This is not junior high anymore. We're all adults here and everyone needs to learn to accept criticism in a mature manner. Come on! Ten year olds make fun of people's looks because they don't know any better. When adults resort to this behavior it just makes him/her look like a child. Remember, opinions are like assholes; everyone has one. We, as 'zine editors, should not have to tip toe around, afraid to hurt anyone's feelings for fear that someone will start a shit talking campaign.

It seems that the underground has become a battle ground between long time supporters and trendy fakes. Now, some of this shit did happen to me (and still is happening to me), and some of it is just incidences that I have witnessed happening to friends. The shit talkers do not belong in the underground. They do not deserve to bask in the scene. The true metal warriors must be sure to keep their eyes open. We must join together and weed out the bullshitters, and fight to get our community back. Only the strong shall survive!!!
