Saturday Night Live

NBC
Saturday NBC [11:30pm Central]

***** (five stars out of five)
Live from New York, it's...
Saturday Night Live is a legendary late-night comedy show that has been on the air for 25 awesome years. Its all star cast has included everyone from Chevy Chase, Dan Ackroyd, and the late John Belushi to newcomers Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, and Molly Shannon. What really makes SNL worthy of watching are its humorous sketches, its dead on impressions, and its sarcastic-yet-true viewpoints.
Saturday Night Live remains fresh due to the fact that its host and musical guest is different every week. Another great thing about SNL is it is done in front of a live studio audience. This only causes the immense talent of the players to become more apparent. A weekly news segment, Weekend Update, hosted by Colin Quinn puts forth hilarious jabs at current events and Quinn can always make the audience laugh.
Even if you aren't a huge fan of comedy, SNL is well worth making Saturday a late night.

Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles

Sony/Tri-Star Television
Mon.-Fri. Bohbot Kids Network (BKN) and Mon.-Thurs. on Sci-fi channel [check local listings for times]
**** ½ (four and a half stars out of five)
Roughnecks: STC takes place in a future where the Earth is ruled by a Federation that is involved in a major war. But not just any war, the Bug War. S.I.C.O.N. (strategically integrated coalition of nations) must send out its troops to the furthest reaches of the universe to engage in combat against an alien race of killer arachnids. The series follows the adventures of Razak’s Roughnecks, one of the thousands of ground forces fighting the bugs, as they travel from campaign to campaign and planet to planet.
This show is brilliant for many reasons. Its initial story line is marvelous. It has more similarities to the original novel than the movie ever did. Plus, the story line appeals to both children and adults alike. This show has it all. Big guns, scary bugs, big explosions, and cool technology. But not only is it action packed, it also demonstrates developing relationships throughout the squad, tragedy, human flaws and emotions, and character change. Another thing that makes it so realistic is the animation. The state of the art lightwave technology and CGI makes this a treat for the eyes. Over all, I suggest that anyone watch this show. Even if you are not a science fiction fan, this show will surely make you one.

Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction

Fox
Friday Fox [8:00pm Central]

*****(five stars out of five)
Beyond Belief, a show with basically no hype, is an hour long presentation consisting of ten minute short stories that boggle the mind. By the end of the show, the viewer is supposed to guess if each tale is based upon real life events or simply created by the writing staff. Originally hosted by James Brolin, the show's short stories stem from a wide variety of categories and unexplained happenings. It is most definately not a sci-fi show, you'd be more likely to see a story about the finding of a million dollars in someone's jewlery box than alien encounters. The tales are actually quite good, and they're short enough that you won't get bored watching. At the end of the show, they tell you which stories are true and which are fictional. New shows run all summer long, so tune in if you're bored with Survivor.
