Diva Divine

Diva Divine, also known as Diva Divorce on account of all the husbands she's had, burst on to the scene in 1998, after a short stint in Sydney. There is absolutely no truth in the rumour that Diva is really a boeremeisie from Chivhu. If she was, she certainly wouldn't be the first. Anyway her first major splash after returning to Hip Hip Harare was as a guest at the 25th Anniversary performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, dressed in a Gaultier Mirror Cone ensemble, which had the audience and press agog. A special mention was made in Desdemona's monthly gossip column: "Congratulations also to the audience. Their outfits often outshone those on stage. I particularly liked the body in the third row adorned with silver hair and skimpy silver underwear. Where are you Darling? Fancy a massage?"

Yes, you guessed it. That was our Diva. And that got the ball rolling. Diva has appeared in many guises since. Some of the more memorable ones include the forever absolutely fabulous Patsy Stone, and a sultry member of Dracula's Harem. Diva saw the New Year 1999 in at Picasso's as the vivacious and buxom Pamela Lee Anderson, one of her more notorious and popular personas. 1999 also saw Diva appear as the mighty Aphrodite, Goddess of Love & Beauty at an exclusive 50th Birthday bash. The Amsterdam Party saw Diva resplendent in a leopard skin ensemble. Shaina Twain eat your heart out! And let's not forget the appearance as Italian opera alto, Donna Mata Tomei, amongst the selective guests aboard local tycoon Archibald Froth's yacht.

But so much for appearances. The time soon came for Diva Divine to perform. The opportunity arose in August 1999 for Diva to take to the stage at Wiggle Night Club, sharing the stage with the inimitable Lemming Sisters. Diva, backed up by her own troupe, known as The Diors, wowed the capacity crowd with her inspired rendition of Cher's hit "Strong Enough". News of this successful debut soon got around, and Diva Divine, along with The Lemming Sisters were invited to perform at the 10th Johannesburg Gay & Lesbian Pride celebrations. Unfortunately, longstanding prior commitments meant that Diva was unable to show off her homegrown Zimbabwean talent to the gay world assembled in Jo'burg in September 1999.

One of the highlights in Diva Divine's calendar in 1999 was her performance at the annual Jacaranda Queen Pageant, one of her many appearances in aid of charity. Accompanied by the fabulous Diors, Diva captivated and thrilled the audience with a resounding version of Donna Summer's "I Will Go With You".

In 2000, Diva Divine took over the running of the annual Jacaranda Queen pageant. Diva's touch restored the pageant to it's former glory. In 2001, Diva & the Diors performed and the Dyke Wedding of the Year, as well as at a few select venues. Diva Divine produced the 2001 Jacaranda Queen pageant, which was a major success. She appeared as an outrageous Christina Aguilera in the Stars of The Moulin Rouge, and once again out did herself as Kylie in "Can't Get you Out of My Head". 2001 was such a hectic year that Diva Divine vowed to hang up her heels in 2002. However, she was spotted popping out of a birthday cake at DJ Dexter's Birthday Party at the Matrix in May 2002. That however, was her last official sighting. We hear that Diva has been giving away her wardrobe as she can no longer slip into the slinky outfits since she has become a gym bunny and has discovered muscles she never knew she had. It is rumoured that Diva is now resident in Cape Town, which has never been the same since. She was spotted with Madonna Lemming in matching not-quite-drag but suitably outrageous outfits at the 2003 Mother City Queer Project Party. So it may unfortunately be true that Diva Divine has finally hung up her heels
