MOSHULU

Date:May 1999 Location: Moshulu /ship docked on Delaware river~ Philadelphia

The Moshulu is the world's largest and oldest four masted sailing ship still afloat, the 3,116 ton vessel was launched in Scotland in 1904, she was named "Kurt" by her German owners. During the first world war she was captured by American forces and renamed "Moshulu" which is an Senecan Indian name which means "fearless".

The Moshulu had a vast and varied sailing history, sailing 54 times around Cape Horn, 28 people have lost their lives aboard her, could it be possible that these sailors still walk this haunted ship? In 1989 while being used as an restaurant on the Philadelphia waterfront, a four alarm fire broke out on the Moshulu, gutting out the interior, 11 million dollars were invested into restoring the ship, turning it into a centerpiece of luxury, but no matter of money could chase the unseen inhabintants of this old ship.

Eli Kareteny, general manager and "captain" of the Moshulu, reports that there are 52 lanterns on each dining table in the restaurant, each night at closing these lanterns are extisguished and because of the devastating fire in the past, precautions are taken to be made sure that these lamps are blown out, several times when the the restaurant is reopened in the morning, the candles are found burning! Several workers have reported hearing noises and seeing the candle lanterns light up on their own.Almost all the servers have seen it , they call it the "Lantern Ghost" .

On the top deck where the sailors had quarters there seems to be a "whispering" ghost, often around early evening, you will hear a very low unitelligible murmur **, could this be the voices of the 28 men that lost theirs lives on this ship, one worker reported that he heard hysterical laughter down in the hull, what secrets does the Moshulu hold? .

The Moshulu made headlines in May 2000, 3 people tragically lost their lives when a dock next to the Moshulu collapsed.
