Celebrity Cavalier ~ June

This picture of Doree greeting a young admirer is illustrative of true Cavalier temperament: eager to be a friend. Co-incidentally, both Doree and her young friend were celebrating their 8 month birthdays as they shared this kiss. Doree (Gray Stone Jeunesse Doree) is owned and loved by CQ coloumnist, Patti Conroy.

Center Stage

Top Gun Exhibitors

by Mickey Weyenburg

Dodger (GB Artful Dodger CDX) and I had a totally fantastic weekend in Open B at the Edmonton Kennel Club 90th Anniversary Show held over the Easter weekend. Friday, with a breed booster for Cavaliers, Dodger held it together to take the HQS and the prize, with a nice round. Considering he didn't have much of a warm-up, since I had just come out of the Novice ring group exercises, he did nicely, even if he did think the fast was a race to the finish!

Saturday, he wanted to be a good sport; with a booster for Toys, he thought he'd let another Cavalier (Ziggy) win, so he laid down on the long sit. No matter, he was also on ITV news on Saturday night, featured briefly during the long down! (And then there was the wedgie Lee gave me on one of the returns...) Sunday was the topper, though. Since the class was so huge (36 entries), it was broken up between morning and afternoon, so we had a long time to watch the class and wait for the results. During the last group, I was given some great advice: "Mickey, warm that dog up, it's gonna be close." I'm glad I did, as we were called back in for our very first run-off! I was a total wreck, Dodger was confused, but we got through it. When the placings were announced, I darned near had a heart attack as the Judge (Michael Calhoun), announced, "In second place, and winner of the run-off, with a score of 197 1/2 points, dog such and such" Not our number, but I didn't mind - to place THIRD in that terrific group of dogs and handlers, with a score like that, was amazing!

But that wasn't the best part. The best part of all was the congratulations from so many people - including the top guns who were waiting to congratulate me with hugs and good wishes outside the ring, what a feeling!

Now I know what makes the top guns REAL "tops" - no sour grapes when someone finishes ahead of them; they were as delighted for me as I was for myself.

After working so long and hard, the feeling of accomplishment is indescribable. This weekend was the highlight of my "dog career", thanks to the sportsmanship of the top guns and this very special Cavalier.
