Heaven in a Tourniquet

Jerome Demchuck scowled as his school, a two story brick building appeared in front of him. It was another monday, a sunny one,the sun peered through the white clouds. He slung his backpack over his shoulder and said goodbye to his dad. The toyota pulled away from the curb as jerome headed up the front steps. A few groups of teenagers were perched on the steps smoking their morning cigarettes. Going through the front doors he passed a tall balding man in a brown suit. It was his English teacher, Mr.Mcmurray one of his least favorite of the teachers. He was a crabby man,he didn't tolerate lateness even it was just a minute into class. Jerome walked down the crowded halls hearing murmurs of conversations as he walked towards his locker. His locker was as far from the front doors, and his classes, as it could possibly be. He went into the washroom directly across from his locker, it was empty, it was only the stank smell, and him. He looked himself over in the mirror. He wore tight leather pants, a long sleeved green shirt, a small scarf was tyed around his neck, and he wore black platforms. He didn't much care that he had no friends and that his popularity was non existant. Too hell with them if they didn't like what he thought was a very wicked fashion sense.

The first bell rang, it was 7:45am. He took out his comb and combed his hair back a bit more then headed towards his locker. The hall was crowded as people made ready thier backpacks for morning classes. Jerome had drama first thing that morning. Then after he had to go back downstairs for english with Mr.Mcmurray. He opened his lock grabbing his blue binder for english. All he needed for Drama was his body, and his mind. Jerome loved Day one, because he loved taking drama, it was fun and challenging. He shut his locker and clicked his heels as he walked up the stairs with the rest of the crowd. He got many tainted looks as he passed football players and preppy girls on the stairs. They just couldn't accept that he was different, he had his own wicked sense of style. He began to sing 'Nancy boy' to himself as he pushed through the crowd.

He finally came to the drama room, a huge room with a set of bleachers for the students to sit on,bulletin boards with clips of newspaper and pieces of artwork cherished by the drama teacher. There were stage lights on the ceiling and curtains on the windows. There were drama masks on the far wall, the whole room was a soft tone of red, like eye candy to jerome's eyes. The teacher, Mrs.Lucas, was sitting on a wrinkled red pillow on the floor as students came through the door like drops of water. She has a distinguished look to her, short cropped blonde hair, sharp blue eyes, she looked like a college student her age of 33 didn't shine through. She wore skirts all the time, she had long legs and a warm friendly smile, and best of all she had compassion.

Jerome took at seat at the bottom of the bleachers. One of the jock boys through papers at his head until the teacher finally called the class to order. "Good morning class" she said cheerfully "In a few minutes we will be recieving a new student to our class.I hope that you will all make him feel welcome here." "Yes Mrs.lucas" the class rang in. The second bell rang,it was 8:00am. Jerome yawned as his eyes fell all over the classroom. He glanced back at the teacher as she rose from her seat on the floor. A boy appeared in the doorway, jerome was awestruck. The boy had black hair down to his chin and light green eyes that shone like a rising sun. Jerome's eyes fell over this boy's body.He wore tight black pants, and a fuzzy black sweater, his lips were rosy red with lipstick,he wore black eye liner, and his face had a pale beauty. 'Great another freak' one of the boys at the back said amongst his friends. The teacher frowned extending a hand to the new boy 'hi i'm Mrs.lucas the drama teacher. Welcome to my class.'She took his file and saw that his name was Blake Martin. "Class, this is Blake Martin." she turned back to look at him "welcome, you can go find yourself a seat and we'll get today's class started".

And as he walked across the room a boy caught his roaming eyes. His hair was thin and a light brown, sparkling green eyes, freckles across his cute little nose. He was about 5'7, a little lighter then blake was himself. His face was lit up, blake could just imagine the lines of laughter around his face. He had full pouty lips and a thin toned upper body. Blake could feel his heart beating faster as a quick thought passed through his head, should i sit beside him. Their eyes met suddenly, blake was dumbfounded by jerome's piercing green eyes. At last what seemed like a 30 mile walk came to an end as blake took a seat beside jerome. He held his hands in his lap feeling his palms sweat, he was nervous. A group boys at the top of the bleachers were whispering and laughing. Blake set his bag on the floor and kept his gaze down at his feet. Suddenly a pair of hands lifted his bag 'here put it under here so no one kicks it' a soft voice said. He turned, it was jerome, he was smiling. 'Thanks' Blake said, he wondered what this beautiful boys name was. And then, as if his mind had been read jerome introduced himself. 'Hi,i'm jerome. Welcome to drama, i hope it's not to boring for you.'
'Thanks' blake said again,he stumbled over words 'i..uhh..like drama..took it..in my last school..until..i was kicked out'. Jerome laughed a little turning his attention back to the teacher. Blake's face turned from pale to bright red. He didn't understand what was coming over him. Maybe it's love, he whispered followed by a loud sigh. The teacher must of heard him. 'Bored already Mr.Martin' she said cheerfully. He shook his head glancing over at jerome.

That class Mrs.lucas went over which play they were going to do in december. Mrs.Lucas had decided to go with either of two Shakespeare plays. Titus Andronicus or The taming of the shrew. The class groaned, but not jerome, he would be the first to sign up.He ultimately hoped the teacher would choose Titus. He would adore a role in such a spiteful play. He peered off at the window his thoughts a muddled word of wonder. He thought, maybe he should ask Blake to eat lunch with him. Or was that too second grade like?. He sighed quietly not intending more of what had happened earlier with his dreamy sighing. He flew off into another world, the teachers words didn't reach his ears. He blinked a couple times feeling a tap on his shoulder. It was mrs.lucas 'good morning mr.demchuck, will you be joining us this morning?'. He scowled adjusting his gaze back to mrs.lucas. Now was his chance to say something witty, to impress blake. He coughed softly 'yes mrs.lucas, but if i saw you when i woke up it would be in hell not down here on earth'.He giggled, alone.Mrs.lucas stood there glaring at him,her hands pressed firmly against her hips. Then, her face changed 'Cute, jerome. Since your in such a joking mood..would you like to come up and do some acting for us?'.Jerome shrugged glancing over at blake who was looking at him with curious eyes.'I'll do some too if you will jerome' blake said softly 'if it's ok with the teacher.' 'That would be great blake,i'm glad to see you volunteer, being the new kid and all' Mrs lucas said smiling again.

After class was over jerome talked to mrs.lucas about the play. The room was empty, mrs.lucas was sitting on the bleachers and jerome was sitting on a pillow. They agreed that Titus andronicus was a good play to do on account that it had lots of parts open to people that didn't want many lines. It was kind of violent though but it was a wondeful dramatic piece.Mrs.lucas was a very open minded person, loved her work and loved her students.

They finished talking, finally, jerome grabbed his backpack off the floor. He felt a hand on his arm,he turned around quickly,it was mrs.lucas.'I'll give you a note so you don't get in trouble for being late for class' she said franticly scrambling to find some paper. She found a pink post-it pad under a pile of pencils. She quickly scribbled an excusion note glancing over at jerome who was sitting by the door. 'Here you go jerome.Nice talking to you,you better get to class though. You have Mr.Mcmurray right' she said handed him the folded note.He nodded stuffing the note in his pocket. He was usually in english class on time so he was pretty sure the teacher would excuse his lateless. They were reading 'Of human bondage' by W.Somerset Maugham.Jerome was enjoying it very much.

Upon walking out the door jerome found himself face to face with this enticing new boy, Blake Martin. He was standing with his back against the lockers ultimately waiting for jerome to come out.He saw jerome and his eyes lit up as he drew forward to meet with him. 'Hi,jerome right?' he said stopping jerome who seemed to be in a great hurry to get to next class.Jerome nodded flying past blake through in an effort to reach english class before he missed too much.Blake ran after him blocking him on the stairs 'what's your hurry?' he said softly.'I'm late for english.Aren't you supposed to be in class?'jerome replied as he tried to pass blake.'Yeah, well i've got a spare so i was waiting for you' he replied looking at jerome innocently.Jerome sat down on the stairs biting his lip.'Do you smoke?' he said finally looking up at blake. He nodded pushing the hair out of his emerald green eyes.Jerome sighed 'follow me,let's go out for a smoke.' They walked silently through the empty halls and out the double doors to a bright grassy field.
