TOKYO --Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. plans to begin direct sales of video game consoles and software via the Internet from March 4 when the company is expected to release its 128-bit PlayStation2 console. The firm will open a special Web site that will be later used to sell digitized movies, music and future video games. The new site, Playstation.com, will be launched at the end of February before opening for online sales from March 4. The site will market PlayStation, PlayStation2 and associated peripherals and software titles. All Playstation titles will be available at the site, which takes credit card payments. SCE will allocate part of the one million unit shipment expected to be made on March 4 and 5 to Net-based sales. From 2002, the company plans to transmit digitized movies, music and video game software to PlayStation2 consoles via cable TV networks. To do this, SCE will invest in high performing servers and other equipment to make the Web site the core of its software transmission business. Meanwhile, Amazon.com Inc., the world's largest online bookseller, has announced plans to handle video game software.
