How it all got started
"The name of this organization shall be The Trans Am Club of America ,Dayton Chapter, Dayton, Ohio" "The object of this organization shall be to encourage the use and preservation of the Pontiac Firebird/Trans Am." It may sound a little stiff but these two statements make up Article I & II of the Dayton Trans Am Club by laws. All Trans Am/Firebird owner's and enthusiasts are welcome in the club. On October 25th, 1978, the T/A Club of Dayton was officially born. Approximately 30 people attended this first organizational meeting. Officers were nominated and elected at this time. Bob Blair is our oldest and only charter member still on the active membership roster. The club was incorporated in the summer of 1981. Monthly meetings were held the first Sunday of every month at the Moraine Civic Center. Several years ago, the club moved it's meetings to the Dayton Airport Hotel and voted to change the meetings to bi-monthly. Activities over the years have included parades, car shows, road rallys, picnics, parties, road trips, and a lot of family fun. Being avid car enthusiasts and taking pride in our rides has enabled us to travel and make new friends all over the USA. In the early years, most of our members were locals, but more recently, we have become international with members from various countries around the globe. For years, we have made donations to many different charities. these include, the Moraine Civic Center Family Christmas Fund, Greene County Toys for Tots, St. Joseph's Children Treatment Center, and currently we are supporting A Special Wish Foundation, Inc. In 1985, we hosted our 1st annual Trans Am Nationals at the Dayton Airport Inn. With $500 borrowed from the club treasury, the Nationals Committee co-chaired by Bill Hale and Jim Pederson went to work and the rest is history! That first year we had 103 cars registered. Last year (2003) we had an overwhelming 514 participants. Our 8th year, Bill and Diana Hale resigned and Sue Emmel took over as co-chair along with Becky Bayes. Jim Pederson remained in charge of the auto technical position, assisted by Bob Smith and Dave Logsdon. Debbie Pederson continued to be the " door prize lady." Mark and Nancy Longman took charge of the parking and Bill Bayes remained our P. R. man and Nats gopher. Many more club members and friends and family worked diligently the entire weekend of the show. Most of them are still doing the same jobs today. Our club and show are continuously growing. The Nats is currently the largest firebird show in the country! We pride ourselves on being, and hosting events that are fun and family oriented. We would like to say a big THANK YOU to Rodgers Pontiac and the Dayton Airport Hotel who have supported us from the very beginning. So there you have a little history of how we began. Would you like to join us in being part of history? If so, just print and fill out the application form along with your dues and mail it in.
