X-COM 4 / FOX FORCE FIVE / X-COM:
I was the producer at the start of, what was to become, one of the longest development cycles in game history! Inspired in part by nifty head mounted cameras the colonial marines have in the film Aliens, Alliances also shares similarities with an old Amiga game called Hired Guns also programmed by Scott Johnston. We had some great multiplayer ideas then of having the server not be able to play but only direct the other players (and give them access to overview information that the other players in the net game didn’t have). We also spoke about deformable landscapes – something I felt was very important for an X-Com game (only Red Factions engine has come close to the vision we had for X-COM 4).
Finally the name Fox Force Five was created to stop leaks to the press – we made the name up after watching Pulp Fiction.
After I left Microprose the project was transferred to MicroProse Hunt Valley.
