Gatekeepers

(Teleporters, Technomancers, Watchmen)

History

When the city was cast down by the gods, a tiny fraction of people were not cast out across the plains. Some were trapped within, living in a paradise prison, their memories shattered by the great magicks of the gods. These people spread to all corners of the city and became the citizens of Ukiyo today. Over the time of their imprisonment though, two distinct groups developed, those dedicated to reopening the prison spent centuries trying to fathom the mysteries of the city and gradually became an elite cast of Technomancer Priests. The Priests uncovered many secrets of the city, including the creation of its biomechanical servitors, the ways to empower huge solar arrays and they even managed to connect with a huge organic computer deep within the city’s most hidden passages.

Once they worked out how to reopen the ancient portals the great priests became known as the Gatekeepers. It was directly through their actions that the city has come to be in its current situation. The Gatekeepers are proud that they have finally overcome the curses of the gods and are now looking at ways to ensure that the city does not fall again. So far they don’t seem to have made much ground in their quest, and the rest of the city waits with baited breath to see what lies in store.

Tactics

By mastering the ways of the city, the Gatekeepers have gained the upper hand in many situations. They are directly in control of many of the sentries and guardians throughout the city, they have access to one of the most powerful computers ever known to exist. Basically their main goal in the city is to ensure that they do not lose their position as its rightful rulers. The Gatekeepers do not fall to the petty squabbles that many of the other factions get involved in, and as a result they are often seen as cold and aloof by the other factions. Despite this they do have their finger on the pulse of the city’s politics, because as the city changes almost daily, everyone needs a guide of some kind. Only the Gatekeepers are 100% certain of their location all the time in the city, and everyone needs to get somewhere eventually. A little favour here and there will never lead you astray will it.

Character Concepts

The most common members of the Gatekeepers are simply referred to as Technomancers, they seem to understand the technology of the city on an instinctive level, and quite a few are also very familiar with the technologies from far off planes. Second to them are a group which has taken a more primitive twist to the technology of the city, they are often derisively called “Machine Shamans” for their ways of talking to mechanical devices and technologies. Some Gatekeepers make use of their connection to the city, to make quite a lucrative business as guides and couriers. The smallest group of Gatekeepers though are those who maintain the old ways and work as high priests of the city, it is these members who are referred to as the “True Gatekeepers”.

Typical Followers

Anyone interested in technology will eventually turn to a Gatekeeper to find out their view on a given device. As a result, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the majority of Gatekeeper followers are mechanics, technicians and scientists. Still there are quite a few people from all walks of life who look up to the ancient Technomancer Priests. Those Gatekeepers who act as guides and couriers often have quite a few contacts in the darker parts of the city, and almost every member of the faction knows a few of the city’s sentries by appearance and serial number.

Rival Factions

Dionysians - They certainly keep the city’s diversity alive, they keep the flow of energy coming through the city and are useful contacts to the outside world. Give them their addictions and let them be.
Oneiromancers - They get to other realms without our gates. Who know what they might bring back with them.
Patriarchs - Are their pacts helping or hindering the city? We will watch them and if they step out of line, we’ll crush them.
Silver Oracles - Great Brainstormers but do they ever actually get anything done. I think not.
The Junta - Let them play their petty power games in the shadows. There are bad things in the shadows, most belong to us.
Xenophobe’s Fist - They work with us to maintain Ukiyo. They’re great tools if you give themj a few trinkets now and then.
