BUILD A BRIDGE (Adapted from the original story, A BRIDGE, written by Donna Frank (c)Nov.1998) ___________________________________________________________________ 'Mommy?, said the little girl. 'I wish that I could meet a prince. I saw one in my book today, I wish that we could meet and play' 'Mommy? -Where do all the princes live? -Do they have a special home where I could go and have some tea? and Mommy? -would they welcome me?' Her mother smiled and softly said 'In castles great and made of stone on island small they have their home. Their castles are beyond the sea and they would welcome you to tea' The little girl jumped with delight and dreamed of princes all that night, of having tea at their great homes in mighty castles made of stone. The following day she took a look inside her special story book, the pictures there were full of light depicting fairies, all in flight. She wondered where they all went to -it didn't matter -Mommy knew! The little girl looked up to say 'Mommy?' -where do fairies stay?' 'Is it in a special place? can I go and play with them? Can I show them all my things? Will they let me stroke their wings?' Her mother laughed and said 'You see, they only play inside your book, their home is by a babbling brook in magic woods across the sea' A few days later the little girl saw a ceramic figure displayed in a store, it looked just like a little elf up there upon the window's shelf. She looked at mommy with a smile 'Mommy?' -where do elves live while they aren't in windows standing there? -do they have a home somewhere?' Her mother said 'They live below a giant mountain capped with snow, their cottage built around a tree, and their home is across the sea.' (c)John Holt 26-JAN-1999 Footnote: "Then one day she asked her mother 'How will I get there?' And on that day, in a small room, out in the country, beyond the rolling hills... a mother's promise was made -to build a bridge across the ocean." (c)Donna Frank 14-NOV-1998
