Pecan Weevil

Aug. 18 - 25, 2005 Pecan weevil emergence at Plains, GA in Sumter Co. is peaking out this week with 40 weevils trapped in 16 traps on August 25.

In 2001, first pecan weevil adults emerged between July 11 and July 16 in Burke Co. In 2002, first pecan weevil emergence was detected on July 9 in Sumter Co. These early emerging weevils caused significant nut drop when populations were high since the nut crop was low.

July 22, 2002 - Weevils continued to emerge from the soil at Turner, Burke, Sumter and Tift Co. and the pecan kernels are not ripe enough the sustain oviposition. Damaged pecans dropped.

Aug. 9, 2002
Pecan weevils continued to emerge in high numbers in orchards with sufficient rainfall to impart friability to the soil and ease the emergence. Egg laying and kernel damage begins at dough stage and nuts need to be protected starting at gel stage. This time varies from early to late August depending on pecan variety. The pecans were not mature enough the sustain weevil larval development and adults emerging continued to cause nut drop. At this time of the season - check pecans for kernel development and when kernels reach the gel stage its time to spray for weevils.

Aug. 22-29 Pecan weevils continued to emerge in high numbers from Burke to Sumter Co. and south to Tift Co. Most cultivars were in gel to dough stage and weevils oviposition began at this stage. Rainfall washed off spray materials in many orchards When Use of carbaryl for control caused some aphid and mite flareup. Use of pyrethroids for caused mite flareup. Weevils continued to emerge through shucksplit in 2001 and 2002. Weevils will damage until shucksplit.
