Per MACH rules, and as stated on the Circular, the 1.5 Litre Classes were listed as a Combine, but were run and scored separate all weekend. Money was divided into 13ths (5 + 8 Boats) and then separated to the two classes 5/13ths to the Stocks, and 8/13ths to the Mods, then paid out 1st through 5th, per the Circular, 1st-30%,2dn-25%,3rd-20%,4th-10%,5th-10%, per class per day, based on total performance for the day. I think the race committee did a fair and equitable job in this regard, and the racers in the two classes, appeared pleased with the way it was handled. North American Championship was awarded on overall performance for the entire weekend, for each of the 6 Classes listed for NAC competition.

Well, there you have it, in all of it's total detail, I think the 1.5 Litre
Classes did well for themselves, and we put on a very good show. We held up
very well compared to the other classes.
Thanks, More Later,

The 1.5LS class needs help if it is to survive. There is already some talk about separating (again ?) the stocks from the mods. This would be the death knell for the stocks; their numbers are too few.
The 1.5LS were formed to be a low cost, modest speed, entry level class. This is good and necessary. When and if the stock class increases numbers it can run separately from the mods. On the West Coast the numbers are so few they must run with the mods. They have no chance of finishing high and some mod racers resent their taking space at starts and seemingly slowing times of mods because they..."get in the way in our race". Here is an idea worthy of discussion that provides a transition between 1.5LS and 1.5L Mods:
One of the two engines allowed in 1.5LS is the Toyota SOHC 4A (1587cc) engine. Consider allowing this engine to also run as a mod with these premitted changes:
1) May use any two throat carburetor and any intake manifold.
2) Any Toyota head may be used. The head may be shaved with no restriction in combustion chamber size.
3) Head may be ported and relieved.
4) Any camshaft may be used.
5) Any Toyota pistons may be used.
ARGUMENTS IN FAVOR:
A) The stock engine can remain in the boat with only the head changed to run as a mod, if pistons are not changed.
B) This engine is plentiful and is of modern design. None of the present 1.5L Mod power plants are modern engines, except the 2 cycle option, which is not environmentally friendly.
C) These suggested changes are relatively economical at only several hundred dollars. A used 2 cycle jet ski engine with tuned pipe will cost approximately $4,000.00 or more.
D) These changes will allow 1.5LS to transition to 1.5L Mod and give the transitioning boats realistic parity with the mods. Certainly parity is a goal of APBA in all classes. The best way to bring newcomers to the sport is to have different boats win in a series of races.
E) Newcomers to this sport could start out as 1.5LS and move to mods when experienced and ready, with maximum expense.
ARGUMENTS AGAINST:
A) This goes against the current status quo.
B) Current, consistent winners may become less consistent winners.
C) This suggested option may make obsolete most current engine choices.
D) Some (many?) current race outfits may view this as unnecessary added expense to remain competitive.
E) This suggested change may push some of the current 1.5LS hulls beyond a safe speed limit. If this were to prove true, then required new hulls would add to racing costs prohibitively.
F) Stock and Mod race boats should race separately. There is too great a speed differential. The stocks tend to reduce racing room for mods, minimizing the potential to set records.
G) If these changes are allowed, the 1.5LS class may opt for some of the changes in the stock (T) configuration, altering the intent of the stock class.
As you consider the pros and cons in the foregoing, think about our boat racing goals. We want safe, inexpensive, sportsman type racing. We want to persuade spectators and curious onlookers to join us on the water as racers. To do this we must have a viable product. We do not now have one. Our rules are too restictive and outdated. The Australian boat racers may have a better idea. Their stock class engines are limited to prescribed displacement with alterations to stock allowed only in the intake and exhaust systems. This enables any new engine to find its way onto the race scene. With so many used 4 cylinder engines available in salvage yards and through Japanese importers, isn't it realistic and feasible to use more flexible alternatives than our present options?

IMPORTANT--If you know of anyone--competitor, crew member, or racefan/spectator--that was planning to travel..........(9/19/00)
to Wildwood, please let them know that Thunder on the Lake has been cancelled. A memo was received from Dave Sutton, New Jesey Hod Road Association, 4:30 Friday (9/15) afternoon.
Dave Sutton, the event promoter, stated that due to circumstances beyond his control,
it was necessary to cancel the event. Although some of you already know this because it was announced at Lake Hopatcong,
it is important that others who were not there, get this information. Thank you. Ann Fitzgerald Reg. 3 Inb. Chairman
Hope this helps clear up the confusion.
It has been said on this list that the best 12 races are used to compute High Points Championship. If we all were to go to 20 races, the best 12 would be selected and used to compute a total for each of us. That would be super. As it stands now, I have only 10 races with points and Bob Thorne has 12. Info from B. Belf shows the following:
Thorne 12 2316
McCowan 12 2005
Dodge 10 1966
Liddycoat 9 1320
If I could add two more "Perfect" (200 points) races I would have 2366. At that point, I would have National High Points. Bob and I have less than "perfect" points races. So it is in our best interest to go to races to better our best of 12 races. I have 2 races with only one heat each. I would like to replace them with 2 heat races. I know that Bob Thorne has a race or two with the same problem. Hypothetically, with 5 more race dates, I could come up with a score of 2611 for the best 12 races. That would be impossible for Bob to beat. The best he could do is come up at least 62 points short. McCowan??? With the number of races left Bill can not mathematically make it. But the real problem for Region 10 has been to get enough racers to the start line for all of us 1 Litre Mods to get national points. Why would Bob Thorne want to come to Region 10? Oh, he did last year for the last races in this region. He was making a last minute run for points; he needed us and we were no threat. This year, he has an advantage by staying away and not filling the field of 4 boats to make points. Win or lose, that's boat racing. I feel that I have had a successful year. If I can not make it, Bob Thorne is one of the best, I'm sure that you will all agree. It is not over yet! There is more to come. We have had one race date canceled already. Next weekend is Chelan (2 days). Then Spanaway (1 day only & AIT) and last is Moses Lake (2 days). Now you know what I do while riding along, going to races.
