Hey everyone,
Thanks for all the support! (especially the Liddycoat's & Wilson's)
At this moment I am as lucky as one can be, a totally crushed vertebra on Sunday, at home on Wednesday, almost new, just a little stiff, and some scrapes.
Thanks to rescue for doing what they are always doing. It was great to hear from everyone who called me at the hospital.
To all drivers and riders - seriously consider wearing a neck brace or collar when racing. I have no doubt that's why I'm walking now.

Richard Smithson:
At the Portsmouth race Richard Smithson got tangled with Ken McMullen and was seriously injured. Updated reports from various people:
UPDATE 1...Patti Hayes:
In Portsmouth there was an accident in the 1.5 Stock Final just after the start. Smithson T-84 broke down and cut infront of Kenny to try to get to the infield but did not get there Kenny McMullen ran over him. The good news is that they are okay. Smithson was taken to the hoospital because he was complaining of neck and back pain but they the initial report from safety was that he was going to be fine. It took a couple of minutes to get him out as Kenny's boat was parked on top of his. Smithson cell must have taken the most of the hit because it was knocked forward at the top but Kenny's boat has quite a bit of hull damage.
UPDATE 2...TJ Browning:
For those of you in Portsmouth this weekend you saw the terrible accident between Richard Smithson in T-84 The Albatross, and Ken McMullen T-5 Hostile Takeover. Richard Smithson underwent surgery last night for some crushed vertebrate, and is slowly recovering in the hospital. If we could all keep him in our prayers for a fast recovery.
UPDATE 3...Durward and Diane Wilson:
Valerie and Scott just got back from seeing Richard Smithson in Norfolk General Hospital. He just came out of a 3 hour surgery on his back and he is doing OK. We will try and keep you informed about his progress
UPDATE 4...Robin and Stu Shane:
The cell did not fail, however there was more damage than noted. The cell took the majority of the impact. The left pickle fork and the nose of Kenny's cell straddled the back of Richard's cell. The bow of Kenny's boat hit square to rear of Richard's cell. It split at both sides of the cell about 8" vertically down the sides of the cell and approximately 12" in from the rear of the cell. The cell was installed well because it took the impact and didn't break lose. It hit with enough force to crack the deck along the base of the cell and down the side of the right side of the deck. The carburetor, intake and exhaust pipes were broken and a hole in the deck at the rear left side from the skid fin. Kenny's boat was sitting atop Richard's boat and was towed in that way. I give great credit the Region 4 Rescue for their (as always) response. I always feel safer knowing that Region 4 Rescue is there. A possible cause for the accident, Richard's boat may have been full of water. His boat and several others was swamped when the PS class took off for their heat. I know Richard's boat was covered the worst, his boat was completely spun around when the PS class took off (my opinion). I feel the cell saved his life period!!! Every class ought to have one.
UPDATE 5...Patti Hayes:
Bobby and i just got off the phone with Richard Smithson. He seems to be doing very well, in fact he said that they are releasing him today. Valerie and Scott Liddycoat has offered to drive him home in the motorhome to make him more comfortable. I would like to say "Thank You" from the whole class and the rest of the racers to the Liddycoats, the Wilsons, and the Brownings for everything that they have done to help Richard while he has been in the hospital. This is what makes boat racing one big family and makes us want to keep doing it!! Thanks to all of you for helping out our fellow racer, it is very appreciated!!
UPDATE 6...Cary Smithson:
Thank you all so much for supporting Rich while he is in the hospital. It turned out that one of the lower vertebrates in his neck was crushed and had to be replaced with some donated bone and a titanium plate. The surgery lasted about two hours. He is recovering very well. He is able to sit up and walk around now. There is a strong possibility that he will be released tomorrow. Everyone at the hospital has been really helpful. Kilo Results
Russ Dodge reports on the Kilo event at Devil's Lake Oregon:
The weather for the Kilos was outstanding. Not much activity from the Inboard ranks. Jerry Hopp ran his U-Light boat through at 134 MPH average. Jerry ran his small motor and carb so that he would meet the 2000 lb weight rule which was the limit of the scales that we had. There was no previous record for the class. Lance Faulkner tried a run in his PS and made a pass at 128 and then 124 mph. Then it was off to the auto parts store. When he returned he made another attempt but found some more problems and gave up. We then had a blown 500+ ci river jet boat that ran a little over 100 mph. The rest were outboards and it was fun to see two teams running the same class boat and bump the record a little each time until one could go no faster. When they left, they were still good friends. There were some other OB records and two electric boat records. I cried after sitting all day and wishing that I had my boat there too. The water was perfect. ...............(10/17/01)
Moses Lake:
Russ reports about Moses Lake:
Weather and water were fine but the 1 Litre Class came up short on numbers. There was a plot to go to Terry Anderson's house, 1/2 mile away, and steal his boat. Terry and his family have had their share of problems with his mother and mother in law being very ill. The commute to the hospital and work have taken all of his time. This was the last race of the year for Region 10 so everyone gets a winter to fix thinks up. Garry Wamsley needs some glue to put a block back together. Spanaway monster got him in the 1st turn last week. He did have some good luck though, he got National Champ in Super Stock. Russ Dodge, Brian Perkins, and Dave Wamsley ran 4 heats. Some of the heats were close and the crowd was into the side by side racing. Over all for the weekend went to:

Camden, NC:
Robin Shane reports on a combined inboard outboard event at Camden NC:
There was a little bit of inboard racing this weekend. The 1.5 litre stock class was invited to attend the Camden, NC race. The southern hospitality was exceptional. It was kinda of neat being the BIG boats at a race with 102 entries.

OZ Reaction:
Tony Murphy has written to inquire about the possiblity of racing here in the US at the Worlds in Hampton next August. He has written me a response to the mixed reaction from our racers
Dear Bob

Sounds like we have ignited the flame of interest in the racing teams. I will be in contact with Fosters, Qantas and most importantly a shipping company this week chasing support. I already have the interest of a Film producer. I am sitting here talking to my mate about it and we envisage coming over for say 3 weeks and competing in whatever is available during that time. Just for info. In case the idea gets around that we must have plenty of money because we can travel around the world to go racing, this could not be further from the truth. Trust me when I say we are just average working folks making a basic wage with an idea to have some fun and meet fellow racers. We are chasing a sponsor Big Time to make this happen. Our dollar is worth 50cents US which further goes to make it hurt.

We are wondering about East Coast or West coast for the drop off. West Coast would be cheaper for us but then there is getting it over east if that is where it all happens. Let me know your thoughts. any drivers out there with contacts in the trucking game?

Bob, would you be able to send us over a video of some of your racing so we can view what we might expect? I will send you a copy of our Rules to have a look at so could you just refresh me of your postal; address. Mine is

I am not sure if your guys appreciate properly about our attitude to this racing thing. I read about one of your chaps discussing working the Cams and Heads etc... and the extra cost over the SOHC. We literally take a 40,000km engine straight off the wrecker floor, strip the electronic mumbo jumbo off it and through a set of carbies on it. Lets race. No head rework etc....too much money.

Thats the idea of entry level racing. Anyway when you get the rules book you will get the idea.

We appreciate the efforts you and others are going to to assist in overcoming the hurdles and look forward to making this happen.

PS I have had the opportunity to compare our Cell with something being used over there. Our Cell is very very solid in comparison and is certified by the Australian APBA. I hope this helps in any doubts on this regard...............(10/01/01)

Still Racing:
Russ Dodge reports from the two races this weekend...
Saturday: @ Spanaway
Wamsley had lane 1 and Dodge had lane 3. Dodge had a good start but Garry had top end and pulled hard into the 1st turn. At the end of the turn, Garry pulled off the course with a broken Rocker. Final order: 1. Dodge 2. Perkins 3. Wamsely (David) We started with 7 boats but several things went wrong. Tomorrow is another race site but some of the boats will not return.

Sunday: @ Sammamish
Five boats today in the 1 Litre Class. Garry Wamsley and crew thrashed on the SS boat that may have a chance to get National Champ. At 2:00 this morning they ran out of time to get the Y-7 back on the water. The day was a mixed bag of testing, driver changes and gun jumpers. This the way it seems to go at the end of the year. Final Results: 1. Russ & Chas Dodge 2. Brian Perkins 3. Dave Wamsley W/ Richard Ketchum driving 4. Bill Walti
Scott Raney added a Sunday view point:
In our class there was only 5 boats Russ Turners Wamsley Y3 Walti T boat from California. I didn't get to see the first heat, but I saw the second heat and the little T boat kicked all of their a**es big time by over 1/2 lap, Walti was second a long ways back, Russ was 3rd about 2 roostertails behind Walti and Perkins was about 1/2 roostertail behind Russ...something happened to Wamsleys boat and they DNF. I was really impressed with that little T boat....it is very fast and rides nicely.
