Left Seattle Friday afternoon on a cool and cloudy morning. It rained lightly on and off for most of the trip with wind that was unacceptable for speed runs. We were in search of some calm wind and air density so thick you could cut it with a knife. Up at O-dark thirty on Saturday morning, we ran to finish setting up the scanners and getting things running for the kilo event. Wind? No wind. Air? Thick with dew and I saw one air density meter that read 107 percent. As Jim Codling said, "One foot below sea level."
The quiet outboards ran first until 10:00. Then the picked sequence of boats kicked in and I was 14th on the list. I guessing that there were around 20+ boats. The Outboards were breaking records one after another. The first run of all the boats were done under ideal conditions. But the wind picked up and we continued the program. The Inboards can handle wind a little better than the Outboards to a point and it became the concern of all of us as the day progressed. The wind died around 5:00 but most everyone had their fill of trying to go fast. One accident marred the day when Einar Glasius in his National Modified went for the world record flip with a near 3 rotation full gainer. Not quite enough height. Landing upside down, Einar escaped by himself quickly having only bitten his tongue and bruised his right knee. The sound at the pits was shocking as the motor RPM was eclipsing 10,000 and then 0.
The following is the speeds of the 1.5 Litre boats that ran.

My only modification for running the Kilo was to remove the skid fin after the first set. This seemed to settle the boat down some telling me that I have had it miss aligned for the whole year. I ran the same prop that I ran at the Nationals. I thought that 100 MPH was possible but much faster than that without a good kite string and tail would put me in the same position as Einar. I am well aware that this is slower than many others who have gone before me. I reached my goal and thought that with some more work on the motor, mods to the boat, and a bigger prop I might be able to another 6 MPH. Still for the first year for the 2-stroke, my team and sponsor was very happy.

APBA Announces Plan for New Structure
Aimed at the Growth of Power Boat Racing
Eastpointe, Michigan, October 5, 2000:
The American Powerboat Association (APBA), the sanctioning body for powerboat racing in the USA from outboards to offshore to unlimited hydroplanes, announced today a comprehensive restructuring plan. Named "APBA Plan 2000", it features paid professional motor sports management and increased involvement of the local regions and members.
"'APBA Plan 2000' is the result of years of discussions, a concentrated effort by the APBA Board over the last several months, and the input of many dedicated APBA members. The plan will allow APBA to function more like a business and provide improved region and member involvement. The plan will position APBA to take advantage of the growth and popularity of motor sports in the coming decades," commented APBA President Mike Jones.
"For much of it's rich 97-year history, APBA has been built on the dedicated efforts of volunteers coordinated by a headquarters and administrative staff. The new structure will position the Association to promote and grow the sport of power boat racing through a professional executive team," added Jones.
"APBA Plan 2000" was unanimously approved in concept by the APBA Board of Directors at its meeting in Seattle, Washington, September 29-30. The plan comes in the wake of new business partnerships of some of the Association's more visible categories of racing. Recently long-term lease arrangements were established with private business partners for the operation of the Association's Offshore and Unlimited Categories. "The lease arrangements provide a predictable revenue stream which gives APBA the ability to fund a paid motor sports executive and promotion team," said Senior VP Don Allen, Sr.
The new executive team will be comprised of a Chief Operating Officer and President, a Promotions Director, and three Competition Directors. An Executive Search Task Force headed by APBA Director Charles Strang has been formed and has begun seeking candidates for the Chief Operating Officer position. A Director for Life of APBA, Strang is also the National Commissioner for NASCAR. "Finding the right individual will be key to the success of the plan," commented Strang. "We are starting immediately and will leave no stone unturned in this effort to find the best qualified individuals to lead our Association."
"Three other task force groups have been formed. These task force groups are designed to work on transition issues, communication issues, and to focus membership input," announced Jones. "The Transition Task Force will be headed by APBA Sr. VP Don Allen, Sr., the Communications Task Force by APBA Director Fred Hauestein, Jr., and the Review Task Force, focusing membership input, by APBA Director Ernie Dawe."
"Prior to Board approval, 'APBA Plan 2000' was reviewed by Category Chairmen, Region Chairmen, and members of Council, in addition to the Board of Directors," commented APBA Senior VP Don Allen, who headed the committee that developed the plan. "We appreciate the valuable comments we received from all those who contributed."
President Mike Jones, summarizing the new plan said, "This is the beginning of a new chapter in APBA's long history. The world of motor sports has become increasingly competitive. Today there are many alternatives for sponsorship dollars, participants, and motor sports fans. Both the Board and I believe that implementing the plan will position APBA for a bright and successful future."
The Association made the complete text of the 19-page "APBA Plan 2000" available to all interested parties via a link from the Association's web site: "www.apba.org", Click Here to get the "APBA Plan 2000" Report.. Input and comment can be directed to the Review Task Force via email to APBA Director Ernie Dawe. Dawe can be reached at erniedawe@apba.org

A swim by Chas Dodge got Russ going before the white flag went up. Y 11 was first, with Y 143 second and Y 18 third. The Wamsley's had trouble and a DNF. Milfoil covered many boat water pickup tubes all day and played into the 1.5 final. All four boats started but Russ had to shut down when the temperature went high. Jesse Robertson lead everyone to the line and took over the lead when Russ shut off. Russ restarted and put on a show of how fast his boat can really run. Caught Wamsley and was going after Turner. Final order was Robertson, Turner, Dodge, and Wamsley"
