Wings of Desire
Actually this film has two titles: Der Himmel über Berlin (The Sky above Berlin) (the German title) and Wings of Desire. The director is the famous Wim Wenders who is known for several very good movies such as Paris, Texas, The End of Violence and others. But this movie is weird. It's a James Joyce in cinema. I mean Wenders tried to screen the stream of consciousness. The result is the movie. It is really not bad. I liked it very much when I watched it for the first time but not that much for the second time although it preserves a great part of its charm. But some episodes seemed to me too long. Although one can't say that there is no plot in this film it is difficult to report it. The main characters are two angels who wander, lost in this world, and watch people. Just watch. Nobody can see them but they see everything. The most charming episodes are where they caress and embrace unfortunate and miserable people, people who lost the sense of life. These wonderful angels can also read thoughts of people. They are so delicate and so compassionate. The film creates a very realistic atmosphere of the working city, numerous people of different ages and of different occupations change before our eyes. The angels can speak with each other, of course, and they report to each other what they have seen. Well, finally one of the angels wants to descend to the people, he wants to become a man (again or what is more probable it's a new experience for him) so much he is enchanted with the earth life. There is no problem with this but the second angel doesn't want to, so the first one is transformed into man and again begins to wander around the streets as a real human now. Once he meets a man who also happens to be a former angel. What a stange world that it attracts angels so much. Finally he meets a girl he knew when he was an angel. Thus he found his love. One interesting feature about this movie is that its first part is screened in black-white film and its last ("the earth") part is coloured. So it is really a beautiful film. I can't call it my favourite one but undoubtly it attracts the attention of film fans.
