The plot centers around Joe Ross, a young and bright engineer or inventor who invented some secret method that if applied would make his company super successful. His boss promises him a lot of money for his invention but nothing is drawn into contract. This fact eventually becomes the major concern of Ross. Through the chance meeting of a businessman with whom Ross becomes a buddy, Joe eventually becomes aware that without the contract his company is not obligated to pay him anything and might even pull a fast one on him. The web of intrigue quickly develops.
It's difficult to tell the plot without revealing the crucial detail as the major enjoyment is to see the story unroll with all its surprises and twists. I can only say that it is superbly done and events take you by surprise. The plot is well constructed and the intrigue is excellent.
Campbell Scott as Joe acted very well. He looks exactly like the nerdy type of inventor: a bit geeky but conscientious and responsible, wanting to play fair and feeling trapped when things don't turn out as expected. Steve Martin took me by surprise by playing a rich and suave businessman. Not his usual comic role but Martin can play suave businessmen quite well. Actually everyone was pretty good though none of the actor with the exception of Martin was a big celebrity.
I've seen one movie of David Mamet before: Thing Change, a delightful little piece with Don Amiche and Joe Mantegna that shows Mamet as a very good director. This movie proves it. It has somewhat similar style but it is made in a different genre.
