Unfortunately my old review somehow got lost (so far it's the only lost file) and it's been a while since I've seen the movie so my fresh impressions are lost. I remember a little bit though.
The theme of the movie is forbidden passion. A successful businessman or doctor named Stephen Fleming (Jeremy Irons) gets acquainted with his son's fiancée Anna Barton (Juliette Binoche). Very soo they become lovers, seemingly without any particular pangs of conscience. The passion grew until it became out of hand.
Strangely enough, Anna did not break up with Stephen's son Martin but instead continued seeing Stephen. The couple did not even take elementary precautions not to get caught. naturally, they got caught by martin himself, though unwittingly. Martin became so upset that he stepped back, fell from the tenth floor and died. And that's it.
After that Anna disappeared from Stephen's life forever but he never forgot her. The last scene in the movie shows him sitting alone in the room and brooding while on the screen there is a huge picture of Anna (and maybe himself too, I don't remember).
It sounds rather idiotic in this retelling but strangely enough, I remember that the movie was quite good. it's the process of their liaison that made it interesting, I suppose. Falling down the stairs and dying is a lame device, I admit but, hey, nobody's perfect, right?
Jeremy Irons there was magnificent, I liked his acting a lot. Other actors were pretty good too but he was the most memorable.
A good movie. I'll definitely watch it again if I have a chance.
