You'll find a lot of recipes on this site for making soap, lotion, body butters, and other stuff. Whether you just like the luxury of homemade products and don't like to spend all that money, or if you're just the do it yourself homesteader type, you'll find something for you here.
Most of the things on here can be made fairly cheap, and if you're new to all this, you wouldn't want to go out and spend a lot of money on expensive oils and butters and clays, because things are easy to mess up until you get the hang of it. None of us in the soap making community are perfect, and I'm sure we've all messed up a batch or three.
There are a few "essential" things that I suggest you buy if you don't have on hand and we can get those out in the open to start with.
1. A stick blender. You'll be grateful for this little baby in the longrun.
2. Accurate kitchen scales.
3. A "soap pot" Stainless steel.
4. Rubber gloves aren't a bad idea. Neither are goggles, but I honestly never use them. That's not to say that you shouldn't, especially if you're more "accident prone" than others.
