ZEN GARDEN
A TOOL FOR TRANSFORMATION

Zen Gardens are yet another meditation tool, used for centering and going within to that space which is quiet and serene, and opening up the channels to receive the guidance that lies deep within each of our beings. Often referred to as a “dry-landscape” these Japanese style have actually been in existence for many centuries, however it was the advent of Zen Buddhism that evolved the concept of these “tools” for transformation.

Zen Gardens world wide have been created that were large in scale and provided a walking and sitting area and were used to create a deeper understanding of the Zen concepts. It was around the late 1200’s that the basic principles were established and are continuing to expand and evolve even today. Many of these gardens today are referred to as “contemplative gardens”….i.e. meditation spaces.

The main elements of a Zen garden are rocks to form mountains and sand to form flowing water. Symbolically, I believe that the rocks represent challenges and obstacles that we encounter as we walk our daily paths, and the sand represents our emotions, or the patterns available to us in our lives. Just as the sand can be rearranged in a Zen Garden, so to can the pattern of our emotions and thoughts be rearranged in order to conquer the challenges we face in our lives. The sand can be curved into a path going around the rocks representing challenges/obstacles, just as often we must find ways of moving beyond the challenges and obstacles we face on a continual basis.

Rocks placed in varying positions in a Zen Garden, have a Japanese symbolic representation of longevity and continuing health, forming a kind of “island” area. Rocks may be place singularly in positions throughout the garden or clumped together.

Bridges are very common within a Zen Garden as well, which can be representative of connecting the “islands” made of rocks, or perhaps of rising “over the top” of challenges, making one’s way to the “other side”. Often times when one makes it to the middle of a “bridge” in their lives, alternative views of direction become available and the path made clearer.

Ornaments added to a Zen Garden complete the beauty of the area as well as hold special meaning for the ones using the garden in prayer and meditation. Personalization through ornamentation is a special addition, and one that can be changed as one grows and evolves.

Zen Gardens compliment any area of one’s property and can be built in those “hard to cultivate” areas, areas that don’t receive a lot of sun for plants and trees to grow and any area that might be intuitively “calling” to be made into a special space where a sense of peace and calm can exist and afford the mind an opportunity to be still and contemplative, allowing creativity, serenity and guidance to exist.

We have available portable Zen Garden kits for any that may be interested in “playing” with one, perhaps to experience the energies of such a garden within the home or office environment or for those who live in an apartment type setting where it’s impossible to construct a personal garden. These kits come complete with a framed in area to “play” and experiment, sand, stones, and a mini rake to design with. Most of our kits are 12” X 7” and are suitable for any table or desktop, perhaps even an altar or any space that you might deem special. Adding personal touches to your portable Zen Garden adds to the beauty and uniqueness expressed through your own creativity.
