ZEPHYR
[Electrafixion; ep; November, 1994; 12"/cd]
1. Zephyr [4.45]
2. Burned [5.45]
3. Mirrorball [4.05]
4. Rain on Me [5.35]
NOTES: Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant began working together again in 1994, as Electrafixion. The name combines the words 'electrocution' and 'crucifixion'. They said it came from a dream Sergeant had in which McCulloch was being crucified on an electric, barbed-wire fence. McCulloch is clearly not the only member of the duo with vivid imaginative capability. YZ865CDDJ was promotional-only and contains only the 'radio edit' [3:53] version of the title track.
vl: WEA YZ865T/ cd: WEA YZ865CD; WEA 4509-98259-2 (German); WEA WPCR-186 (Japanese - includes the '7" edit' version of "Zephyr")

Lowdown
[Electrafixion; single; August 29th, 1995; 7"]
1. Lowdown
2. The Holy Grail
NOTES: This was a numbered, limited edition on red vinyl. "Lowdown" originated in an abortive 1993 songwriting collaboration between Ian McCulloch and guitarist Johnny Marr.
vl: Spacejunk YZ977X (US)

[Electrafixion; single; August 29th, 1995; cd]
1. Lowdown
2. The Holy Grail
3. Land of the Dying Sun
4. Razor's Edge
NOTES: Editorial note: that "The Holy Grail" and "Land of the Dying Sun", a truly remarkable pair of songs, are relegated to the b-side of a little-known single constitutes one of life's small injustices.
cd: Spacejunk YZZ977CD (US); WEA  YZ977CD (German)

BURNED
[Electrafixion; album; September 25th, 1995; cs/cd]
1. Feel My Pulse [4:23]
2. Sister Pain [4:15]
3. Lowdown [4:35]
4. Timebomb [4:38]
5. Zephyr [4:12]
6. Never [4:46]

8. Mirrorball [3:56]
9. Who's Been Sleeping in My Head? [4:00]
10. Hit by Something [3:28]
11. Bed of Nails [3:51]
NOTES: Reviewers cite the Nirvana influence, but Electrafixion described their genre (in the words of Ian McCulloch) as 'gringe', or 'grunge with a grin'. Anton Corbijn's cover photograph of a comely, bikini-clad and extremely sunburned young woman drew fire from both feminists and moralists. McCulloch told an interviewer: "I just never saw it that way. .... We never met her, but when I look at the picture I don't think sexually at all. …. it's the notion of the name Electrafixion as being a cross between electrocution and crucifixion Will's idea of me wired up on a cross." [ADDICTED TO NOISE; 1995] "Lowdown" and 'Too Far Gone" stem from a collaboration between Ian McCulloch and guitarist Johnny Marr (best known for his work with the Smiths). This project came to naught when the tapes were reported stolen in a courier van robbery. Another survivor of this McCulloch/Marr teaming, "How Does It Feel (To be on Top of the World)" wound up as England's official World Cup Soccer song in 1998.

12. Forgiven [5:48]
NOTES: Ian McCulloch, Will Sergeant and Les Pattinson reunited in 1996 to become, once again, Echo and the Bunnymen. (But a typo rendered the band's name as 'Bunymen' on the spine of the US release.) About the album's title, Will Sergeant noted: "It's not about youth. It's more about endurance. Our songs still have youth even if we don't. Well, that's my story!" [Channel 4 Teletext [UK]; July 12th, 1997] The London Metropolitan Orchestra provides the strings. "Just a Touch Away" began life as an Electrafixion song called "Live Forever". "Baseball Bill" was the final Electrafixion single. Norman Watson's cover photograph translates s the Hertfordshire glen of CROCODILES to Morocco, restyled with palms and ferns. Merchandising note: an over-sized paperback, EVERGREEN, published in January, 1998, contains lyrics and music (guitar tabs and such) for all the songs on the album. The British cd edition (London 828980-2) came with the HISTORY OF THE PEEL SESSIONS 1979-1997 cd listed below. The Japanese release included "Watchtower" and "Polly".
vl: London 828905-1/cs: London 828905-4/cd: London 828905-2; cd: London 828980-2 (UK - July 7th, 1997); cd: Polygram POCD1256 (Japanese)

Bedbugs and Ballyhoo (live) [3:41]/15. Rescue (live) [3:49]/16. Lips Like Sugar (live) [4:40]. All were recorded on April 1st, 1999 for John Peel's show on BBC Radio 1.

The 'live' "Forgiven" was recorded during a radio station promotional visit. “I had ‘Forgiven’ for about six years but I never felt that it was quite right. How Does It Feel (To be on Top of the World)
[England United; single; May 25th, 1998; cd]
NOTES: Recorded by Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant, along with members of Ocean Colour Scene, the Spice Girls and some football players, this served as England's official national team song for the 1998 World Cup. The music came from the ill-fated 1993 McCulloch/ Johnny Marr collaboration, with new lyrics written by McCulloch. World Cup officials chose "How Does It Feel (To be on Top of the World)" over submissions by Blur, Pulp, and The Boo Radleys. There are two cds, containing various permutations of the song.
cd: London LOCDP414.570 204-2 (Cd 1)/LOCDP414.570 231-2 (Cd 2)

Rust
[Echo and the Bunnymen; single; March 15th, 1999; 7"]
1. Rust
2. The Fish Hook Girl
NOTES: The "I can feel the stars shooting through my heart like rain" chorus of the title track originated in "Ribbons and Chains", an Ian McCulloch b-side to his 1992

vl: London LON424

Rust CD1
[Echo and the Bunnymen; single; March 15th, 1999; cd]
1. Rust
2. The Fish Hook Girl
3. See the Horizon
NOTES: The "Everybody wants you now" chorus from 1997's "Hurricane" resurfaces in "See the Horizon", revamped and in a different context. RUST08 is a 1-track UK promotional-only cd.
cd: London LOCD424; PolyGram International 570-395 (US -- May 4th, 1999)

Rust CD2
[Echo and the Bunnymen; single; March 29th, 1999; cd]
1. Rust
2. Sense of Life
3. Beyond the Green
NOTES: "Beyond the Green" offers a generous handful of Ian McCulloch's favorite disaster imagery ("Dark clouds hanging overhead/You keep drowning in your bed/We're still waiting for the sun to shine/Burning underneath the waves"). "Sense of Life", conversely, overflows with Light triumphant.
cd: London LOCDP424; PolyGram International 570-397 (US May 4th, 1999)

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE?

6. Lost on You [4:50]
7. Morning Sun [4:12]
8. When It All Blows Over [2:57]
9. Fools Like Us [4:02]
NOTES: Citing a family crisis, Les Pattinson left the Bunnymen early in the recording of this album. His work appears only on "Fools Like Us". Will Sergeant has often expressed strong dissatisfaction with WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE?, regarding the music as not 'hard' enough. Ian McCulloch, conversely, holds it among his favorites. Fan opinion is also divided. The London Metropolitan Orchestra provides brass, woodwinds and strings. Guest artists The Fun Lovin' Criminals play horns on "Get in the Car" and "When It All Blows Over". Nifty setlists note: Ian McCulloch performed a rockin' early version of "History Chimes" on his 1990 CANDLELAND tour.
