STORY OF BULA WHITEHEAD YOUNG
Bula Whitehead was born in Winfield, Marion County, Alabama on August 8, 1906. She was born at home in the original house owned by her parents, Newt & Idella Whitehead. It was one of Winfields first buildings built south of the town of Winfield. Bula is the daughter of Newton S. Whitehead and Idella Raines. She attended Winfield School then went on to Wheeler Business School, later to East Lake Southern. She was into the Insurance Business for a few years meeting her husband, William Edward Young, in Dallas, Texas. He was working at the Texas Pacific Railway. William Edward worked there all his working life. They had their two girls, Marijo & Nina, while living there. After 47 years of marriage, William Edward passed away in 1976. Bula worked nine years for other companies ending up with her own Insurance Agency by 1970. She then worked at Jaco Insurance Company until she had a stroke in 1995. She was in therapy for a long while and was restored with the use of her leftside. She now uses a walker. Bula has remained strong through all that has happen to her and her family. Marijo, her daughter passed away in 1998, then in 2001 her other daughter passed away. I chose to write about Bula because she is a dear friend and I respect her highly for all she has acomplished in her life. She has worked in the public view and stayed with her genealogy research, having collected information on her Whitehead and Raines lines.
Bula's parents Newt & Idella passed away, Newt in 1955 and Idella in 1962. Newt was one of the charter members of the Church of Christ in Winfield, Alabama. When he was eighteen years of age he helped to build the Frisco Railroad in 1887, this was before the town of Winfield was established. Newt was postmaster for 12 years in Winfield. At his death their home was one of the remaining "first buildings" of Winfield. Bula has been retired for several years now and lives in Fort Worth, Texas. She still enjoys her genealogy and friends. Bula is truly a remarkable woman. Written by friend and cousin Patsy Box Johnson Bula M. Young 1906 – 2004 Bula M.
