Auxiliary Police Officers are sometimes also called "reserve officers", "Special Officers" or "Volunteer officers" depending on what agency they belong to. Most Auxiliary Police units in NYS were established with the creation of the New York State Civil Defense Act of 1951.
Authority Of NY Auxiliary Police
*NYC Auxiliary Police Officers are required to carry police batons under the authority of NYS penal Law 265.20 b.
*NYC Auxiliary Police Officers are permitted by law under the NYC Administrative Code 10-147 to carry handcuffs both on duty and off duty.
*The NYS court of Appeals permits the "Fellow Officer Rule" to be extended to New York City Auxiliary Police Officers.
*Auxiliary Police in NY have the authority to detain violators of Misdomeaners under the authority of the State of New York Civil Defense act Article # 8 Section # 105
*NYC Auxiliary Police officers injured while performing their prescribed official duties are provided Workers Compensation under NYC Administrative Code Section 14-147 of chapter 1 of title 14
*NYC Emergency Deputy sheriffs may be appointed during emergencies under county law# 655
*NYC Admin Code Section 14-148 provides NYC Auxiliary Police Officers with an annual uniform allowance
