An Age of Reason

Somewhere deep in time I’ll come to understand
Why the world spins on its axis and why it is I am.
All the lessons that I’ve learned and the roads I’ve travelled on
All the aspirations held and the dreams that now are gone.

Just why it was that love and all love had to teach
Was incessantly elusive and always out of reach.
Why love became a substitute for power and control
A necessity of life, an excuse to kill a soul.

Whatever became of substance, the weight of someone’s word?
The character and credit that now seem so absurd?
Why the value of a promise no longer held its worth
And love became extinct, a mere fable here on Earth.

I’ll understand why passion did disappear with fealty
I’ll learn if it was here at all and I too blind to see.
Of virtue, truth and honour I’ll hope to understand
All the sorrow, pain and sufferance bestowed upon this man.

By what command did virtue die and with it loyalty
And in its place commission wrong and loveless, selfish greed.
Why is it abandonment was justified in love
And why my sun was squandered and Hell fell from above.

Somewhere deep in time, I know, I’ll come to understand
Why the world continues as it does, spun by unseen hands.
I’ll sit and rest my torn, ripped soul in a world that I call mine
In an age of reason and of hope far away from this foul time.
