The Hilgenberg Page

Maintained by: Timothy Hilgenberg in London, UK

This site was conceived after my father had suffered a stoke. It became clear to me the only way to try and stem the tide from washing away what little I knew about the family would be to set up this site. The intention, too was to use the internet's reach to see what other family links I might discover out there.

In this way this site is also thought as a starting point for anyone who might find themselves looking for "Hilgenbergs".

The name is Middle High German meaning: Mountain/Hill of the Sacred or Saints. The modern High German equivalent is Heiligenberg. There are two towns I know off called that today: one in France, west of Strasbourg, the other near Lake Constance in Southern Germany.

However there is also a castle Heiligenberg in Melsungen, Germany and the town of Stadtlohn, near the Dutch/German border has a little chapel called Hilgenberg - from the 12th Century!

Many years ago I bought a book by mail order called: "The World Book of Hilgenbergs". It listed some 1800 Hilgenbergs worldwide, the largest group, around 800 were listed as living in Germany, but the second largest group to my surprise was in the USA - some 700 in fact!

There were also Hilgenbergs in Australia and Canada amongst other countries with me being listed as the only Hilgenberg in the UK - meanwhile I'm led to believe there is another family of Hilgenbergs living near Coventry in the UK.

Over the years that this site has been up I've had emails from other Hilgenbergs or decendants of Hilgenbergs from around the world. From amongst these I have gleened there are even some of us in Russia and Brasil.

My father's name was Nikolaus and he was born in Wuppertal, Germany in 1934, first child of Alfred and Lotte Alfred Hilgenberg.

My father's siblings are Ulrich (Uli for short) and two sisters, Bärbel and Hanne, there was also one brother who died at the age of 7, called Peter.

My grandfather had a brother named Carl, but throughout his name he spelt it with a "K" it was not until he died that we realised it had been spelt with a "C". The things you never knew.

Why not drop me an email if you think you might be part of the Hilgenberg family?
