A DOGS PLEA

Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for the kindness than the loving heart of mine. Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I might lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest symphony. I long to see you as you must know, by the fierce wagging of my tail with the sound of your footsteps. Please take me inside when it is clod and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to the bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Keep my bowl filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I thirst. Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life. And, my friend, when I am very old and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see to it that my life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your loving hands.

HOW DOGS WERE NAMED

When God created Heaven and earth
He gave everything a name;
First was man, then woman,
And neither were the same.
He named all the animals
However large or small,
Every bird and insect
And those that could only crawl.
He named each fish and everything
That lived in the river and the deepest sea,
And then he heard a small voice say,
"God, have you know name for me?"

God touched that nobel head and said,
"From now on you will be known
As mankind's greatest friend
Because you were the faithful one
Who followed me to the end.
You will help the shepherd
Tend his flock of sheep;
You will rescue men from the mountain,
From avalanche, flood, and fire;
You will work with the police
And keep your loved ones safe;
To please is your only desire.
You will bring much joy and happiness
To the lonely, the old, sick and in pain;
You will be the ears of deaf,
The voice of dumb,
And a companion to the lame."

"Dog, I give you my name in reverse," said God,
"For you'll do so much for mankind,
But the most precious gift you will always be
Is a guide dog for the blind."

THINGS HUMANS SHOULD LEARN FROM THEIR DOGS

Never pass up an opportunity to go for a joy ride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
When it is in your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they have invaded your territory.
Take naps before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something your not.
If what you want lies buried, dig it up!
When someone is having a bad day, be silent,
sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a growl will do.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you are happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joys of a long walk.
No matter how often you are scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout....
...run right back and make friends.
