Part One
Brynn and NJ walked around some of the shops that the nearest town had to offer, trying to find a dress for the evening. Brynn had not remembered to pack anything special for any formal occasion, she just didn't expect to be attending anything like what was going to be happening at the nest tonight. When Jeffrey had asked her to dinner the previous evening, she'd known exactly what he'd been referring to. There had been a low buzz all the past week about Tina's upcoming birthday party and how special John wanted it to be for her. This little outing with NJ was not only a good idea to get her mind off what had happened earlier with Bud, but it was also a necessity for the party that evening.
Sifting through rack and rack of different dresses, Brynn was getting rather discouraged with the whole affair, shopping not really high on her list of favorites. Every dress that she'd tried on was either too long, too short, not the right color or the right size. It seemed as if she was going to have to go to the formal party in a pair of cut off jean shorts and a tank top.
Brynn wasn't all that sure she wanted to go to this whole thing anyway. Her date was Jeffrey Wigand and although she had nothing against the man personally, he was still seeing Wendy. This fact alone was enough to make her want to run and hide. Bud was sure to be at this party along with everyone else at the nest and if Bud saw her with Jeffrey, he was likely to blow a gasket. She was ready to chuck the whole idea and stay in her room to watch a few movies, maybe get good and drunk. "Like that would help anything," she murmured to herself as she picked up another dress from the rack and deciding it was more than ugly, setting it back on the round wire bar that held it.
"What did you say?" NJ asked as she, too, went around the rack one more time to see if there was a suitable dress hidden some where in the mass of ugliness.
"I said let's forget about this, I'm not going to go to this thing." Brynn replied.
NJ looked up at Brynn with shock apparent in her features. "I don't think so, girl. You're going to that party tonight if I have to drag you there myself." She went to stand next to the other woman. "I know this hasn't been a good day for you, but if you don't go tonight it'll be showing Bud that he got to you and I know you better than that. That's not what you want."
Looking up with a half smile on her face, Brynn met NJ's eyes. "Okay, can I go in jeans then?"
NJ giggled a little at the thought of Brynn going to a formal dinner in jeans and a tee shirt. It would be something simple, but something she could see the girl doing it, just to be different. "I think John would kick your butt if you did that, NJ finally said. He's already gone through so much trouble for this whole event, if you show up in non-proper dress, he'll freak."
"The last thing I need is another person mad at me right now," Brynn agreed.
"Come on." NJ grabbed Brynn's hand and led her to another rack of sequins, lace and brightly colored taffeta. "There is one last rack for us to go through, there has got to be one in here that would be just perfect for you."
Brynn sighed and started to rummage through all the contrasting colors and materials on the rack, still not finding anything even by color that would be right for her. NJ stood on the opposite side of the round garment rack doing the same thing, however she pulled each dress out and examined it closely, looking from the garment to Brynn before shaking her head and replacing it. Pulling out one final dress, NJ let out a sigh and once again looked from Brynn back to the dress before clearing her throat and speaking.
"I think we've found it."
Brynn looked up, her mind clearly somewhere else, anywhere but the task at hand. Looking at NJ she asked, "Huh?"
"I've found it. Brynn, if this isn't completely you, I don't know what is." Brynn went around to stand by NJ to see what it was she was talking about. Seeing her holding up the dress, a large smile spread across her face.
Brynn reached out, fingering the delicate powder blue material NJ held in her hand, taking time to touch some of the rhinestones sewn to the top. "White will shit kittens when I show up in this tonight."
Part Two
After having her hair done up in a delicate French twist before they left town, picking out the perfect jewelry and shoes to go with the dress, Brynn and NJ had returned to the tavern to get ready for the evening. They were quickly running out of time. Instead of going to opposite rooms, they decided to get ready together so they could listen to some music and have a good time before the party even started. Brynn order a bottle of champagne to help them get ready and both women, taking extra care not to muss their hair, began the dressing ritual.
Brynn had to ask NJ for help to put in her new belly ring that they'd had the good sense to purchase while in town. It was a small gold hoop with an aquamarine blue stone holding it closed tightly. This piece of jewelry was essential for the outfit she was going to wear tonight as it would accentuate her belly quite nicely. When NJ was done fitting the gem in place, she stepped back to examine her effort.
"Once the redness goes away from us messing with it, that is going to look perfect," NJ said, taking a small sip from her champagne glass. "Does it hurt much to have that done?"
"No," Brynn replied turning the hoop around and around to check it form every angle. "Just some pressure and before you know it, the guy says, all done."
"I've been thinking about having something like that done." Brynn looked at NJ, shocked by her words. She could see that her friend had a mischievous glint in her eyes and it made Brynn smile.
"Just think long and hard before you do it, I mean it's not like a tat or anything, these heal if you want them out, but..."
"What?" NJ asked, certain she knew what Brynn was going to say.
"Mannie would have a fit about it, say that I'm a bad influence on you or something."
Nodding her head, NJ thought for a brief moment before replying to Brynn.
"I've been thinking about doing it for a lot longer than I've known you and for reasons that I don't care to explain right now."
"Well just as long as you tell Mannie that after you do it, I think it would be a grand idea. I want to go with you when you have it done too." Brynn said, walking across the living room to get her glass.
NJ went to the mirror to inspect her hair and makeup, Brynn following close behind her. Once both were convinced their make up was perfect, they went into separate rooms to don their party dresses, Brynn to the bedroom, NJ to the bathroom.
Brynn found the top of her dress and slipped it over her head, taking special care with her hair. The slick material felt cool on her skin and she watched herself in the mirror to adjust it just right. Staring at her reflection, she took in the beauty of the top. It was a powder blue color, contrasting perfectly against her dark skin tone. It fell just below her breasts, making sure to cover them, but leaving her waist open to the air.
The blue silk material was highlighted with several rhinestones that caught the color of the silk material they were sewn to just right, giving them the appearance of blue rings around the outside of each gem.
Going back to the bed, Brynn lifted the powder blue skirt that matched the top she already wore and stepped into it, doing up the few nicely concealed buttons in the back. The skirt itself had a layer of iridescent nylon over the top, making it sparkle as well without the addition of the rhinestones, except along the very top, where it had the same pattern of rhinestones sewn to it as the top had. The skirt fell just below her belly button in a soft swooping manner, accentuating all of her curves, but still flaring out like a traditional gown.
After buckling the shoes at her ankles and putting on the bracelet and earrings that matched the gem in her belly ring, Brynn spun around in front of her full-length mirror, checking out the complete affect of the dress.

NJ knocked softly on the door and Brynn called for her to open it and enter the room. Both women squealed with delight when they saw each other. NJ went to stand next to Brynn in front of the mirror and they admired their own gowns and each other's.
"I told you that dress was you," NJ said brushing a long wavy piece of hair back away from Brynn's face.
"You were completely right," Brynn blushed at the compliment. "I can't think of anything else I would rather be wearing tonight than this dress."
"Well," NJ sighed as she checked her own hair to make sure none was out of place, "I guess I'll head back to my room now and wait for Mannie. He should be there any minute now, not that he's actually looking forward to this or anything."
Brynn nodded her agreement, after giggling
at NJ's comment. "Jeffrey left a message for me while we were out
that he'd be here at 6:30 instead of 7, so he should be knocking on
the door soon too."
Part Three
If he had a dollar for all the times he'd knocked on this door, he would be a millionaire by now, John Biebe considered, chuckling to himself. But every time he knocked, what always awaited him on the other side not only caused his heart to leap, but left him amazed at how much his life had changed since late last May. Momentarily, he remembered that long ago night when she nervously approached the table he and Maximus shared; how Bud had taken her by the shoulders to turn her towards him so they could be introduced. Etienne Stewart -- we also call her Tina. Clearing his throat, he gave the oak door a slight rap, then a short time afterwards, heard a voice call, "Who is it?"
"It's John, sweetheart. You almost...."
"Oh John...hold on just a second. I'm coming!" came the excited reply, and he smiled. He wondered just what she would be wearing this evening because she had been keeping it a surprise. Supposedly a few of the girls knew, but each time he attempted to probe for information, they would just give him a sly smile and say something similar to 'You'll see,' accompanied by a wink. Even Laura, who always admitted she knew nothing about fashion, would grin, then go on about colors, and fabrics, and other things that totally went over the Alaskan's head. He almost wondered if they were doing it simply to throw him off the track. The idea of Laura with her head buried in 'Town and Country' or 'Vogue' just to learn a few terms was enough to make him laugh. But, if confusing him was their intention, it had worked.
He heard the lock on the door being undone, but before he could enter, footsteps began to hurriedly retreat towards the bedroom. "I'm almost done...Come on in!" the distant voice called out. "I'm running a bit behind -- I'm sorry."
"It's okay, darlin'. I'm a little early anyway," John replied as he stepped into the sitting room, giving a look round when he did. He glanced at his watch, then at the clock on the wall, and saw that he was about fifteen minutes ahead of time. Tina was normally quite prompt, but he was so excited about getting her for their evening together, he couldn't wait, and after seeing to several final preparations, had rushed to the Hotel. "Just take your time."
"I was just putting my earrings in, then I'll be done!"
"Don't rush on my account." He wandered the familiar room a short time, glancing out the balcony windows; pausing at a round table where she now had a multitude of color and black and white photographs. It seemed funny, he considered, as he selected one containing the two of them taken on New Year's Eve, to see variations of his face in nearly all of them. There was Maximus, Bud, Colin, Mannie, Cort -- nearly each of Russell's incarnations -- all of them the sheriff's 'brothers', and for a minute, John let his index finger trace the outline of his body and Tina's. How had that one article affectionately referred to him: 'scruffy and slightly chubby'? /She could have had Max...but she chose you, you lucky S.O.B. I never thought I'd be this happy again, but she made it that way for me...Soul-mate. We both satisfied something in one another. God knows I was lonely -- and so was she. Tina...after all we've been through, I wonder if I can ever show you completely how much I love you// Shaking himself from his reverie, he hollered, "Hey!"
"Hey...what?!"
"Can I take a peep?"
"Uh-uh-uh. You just stay where you are, Sheriff Biebe. I'll be out in a minute."
"Geez...I don't know what you're so secretive about. It's not like I've never seen you dressed up before."
"Because...you've never seen this outfit before. I wanted it to be..." The voice was moving closer, and John turned at the nearing sound, "...a surprise for you."
John's eyes fixed on the open entranceway between the sitting room and the bedroom, and he froze, the words unable to emerge as he shook his head, amazed. /Down boy// he told himself as his manhood stiffened. /Now's not the time to be doing that...but....// "Oh...my...God!" he exclaimed as Tina turned full circle so he could get a good look.
"You like it?" she eagerly asked.
"I love it," he whispered, finally moving towards her, unable to take his eyes off her. "Every time I think I've seen you look even more beautiful than the time before, you just go and surprise me again."
Tina bowed her head, her cheeks becoming the hue of the blush rose ballgown she wore, the dress playing at being not only elegant, but innocent and flirtatious as well. Her shoulders and arms were bare, the spaghetti straps and the glow of a golden, lumincescing powder the only things touching her skin in that area. Her neckline was enhanced by a Victorian styled coral strand, as well as soft, light brown spirals cascading to frame her face before drifting towards her throat. The bodice was a bustier which cinched her waist in a manner accentuating her curvaceous figure, then pushed her full breasts high in a teasing way. John managed to draw his eyes from watching how her chest rose and fell with each quickening breath, and stepped back enough to finish studying the entire outfit. Gathered slightly at the waist, the skirt was flared and floor-length, revealing only a hint of a pair of rose colored shoes.

Allowing one hand to gently touch the French roll upswept at the back of her head, smiling at the tiny, glittering pins holding the hair in place, John swallowed hard. "I don't think I've ever seen you look more beautiful," he finally managed, wanting nothing more than to carry her back into the master bedroom.
Glancing away as she gulped herself, Tina smiled. "I hoped you'd like this."
"Very much. No wonder the other girls were so quiet."
"I...I asked them to. I wanted this to be a surprise."
"Well..." He paused, shaking his head as he chuckled deeply. "Well...they really succeeded."
"Hey, but you....Look at you." She nodded her head towards him, indicating the tuxedo he wore with great dash. "This is only the second time I've seen you in a tux, and you look absolutely....Well, I don't think there's a man here at the Nest that could look more handsome than you do right now."
John snorted a bit as he chuckled again. "I wouldn't tell Sid that."
"Sid can...." She stopped, then grinned. "Sid can just be jealous." She fingered the silver cufflinks then looked back at him, amazed at how a man with both a beard and shoulder length hair could manage to make an Armani tuxedo look even better.

"You trying to get me in trouble with him, darlin'? No seriously, I figured....Well, I thought that with this being a special occasion, if we were going to dress up, just wearing my suit wouldn't do. By the way sweetheart'...." He bent nearer, giving her a tender kiss. "Happy Birthday again."
"Thank you."
"And I hope I can make this very memorable for you."
"Well, it's already been special. This will be my first birthday at the Nest. I can't think of any better way to enjoy it than to be here with you."
"You don't know how that makes me feel," and he kissed her again, allowing his tongue to gently slip into her throat, listening to her softly moan. He suddenly pulled away, gazing into her brown eyes, seeing the disappointment there. "What's wrong?"
"Why did you stop?" she asked with a teasing smile.
"Tina...you look gorgeous. I don't want to muss you."
His answer was to watch her reach up before she wrapped an arm around his neck to pull his towards her once more. "You can muss me," came a tiny voice, and before he could protest, their lips met again. After a few moments however, John pulled back again, smiling when he saw Tina pout.
"I think you've had enough for now, young lady."
"'I think you've had enough for now, young lady,'" she said in an imitation of her companion. "Okay...Okay...no more then -- for now. I'll expect a nice gift from you after dinner though."
"I already have it arranged. When we're done, this is going to be a birthday you'll never forget."
"Promises, promises," she joked, hurrying back towards the bedroom again. "I just need to touch up my make-up and then I'll be ready."
She was only gone five minutes, and on returning, she stood in the doorway long enough to study the sheriff before he realized she was watching. His back was to her, and Tina shut her eyes, briefly recalling the evening he had escorted her to the apartment after dinner; they had shared dessert...she had unsuccessfully attempted to teach him to dance to what became their song....
/I asked him to stay// she considered, her throat tightening as she felt a peculiar fluttering in her chest. There were times, when she was back in the Real World, that there was such an ache deep within herself she wondered if anything could heal it. Then she would head to the place she considered her true home, and almost immediately, the weight would vanish, her spirits grew more animated. She recalled mentioning it once to Michelle, Laura and a few of the other visitors. Had they noticed that no matter what shape they were in when they left their so-called reality, the closer they grew to the Nest, the more their real selves came to the forefront? Even after all these months she was uncertain if it was the magic of the place or something more, but it no longer mattered. All that was important was being with someone who understood her more completely than she ever believed possible.
"What are you wearing?" came the familiar accent, and she smiled although he was still facing away from her.
"What am I wearing? What am I wearing?" she joked. "Do you mean...."
"Your fragrance. I smelled it again the second you came back." He turned around so their eyes met, and Tina gazed dreamily at her partner as he slowly approached her again. How could any woman in her right mind look at the man before her, and someone like Charles Danner, and even contemplate going with the latter? "I forgot to ask you what it is."
"The same as what you're wearing, only the female version."
John laughed lightly. "'Good Life'."
"'Good Life'. Funny you knew I was wearing it 'cause I never said...."
"You didn't have to," John admitted. "It just seemed...I don't know...it felt right wearing it tonight."
"Well, I said it before, I'll say it again," she admitted, allowing a hand to trace a line along the finely woven sleeve of his black jacket. "They'll have to be jealous tonight, because you're putting them all to shame."
The Alaskan reddened slightly as he placed a finger underneath her chin, carefully searching each detail of her features, then trying not to fall deeper into her soft brown orbs. If he did, they would never make it downstairs. "You ready?"
She nodded, reaching for a Pashima shawl the color of her gown, but before she could retrieve it, John beat her to it. With the greatest delicacy, he tenderly arranged it about her bare shoulders, taking a second to bend close so that the heady fragrance of the Davidoff fragrance filled his lungs. As she normally did with her scents, this was also layered, and Biebe fought to keep his imagination from getting carried away. He thought of her taking a long, warm bath surrounded by foam and bubbles created by the bath gel; perhaps squeezing more onto one of those net sponges everyone used these days, allowing it to glide over her body. Then she would towel off before massaging a layer of cream or lotion over each golden limb. Next would come the perfume, applied to each crucial pulse point, and lastly the talcum powder -- smooth strokes across her legs, her arms, her breasts.... How often had he watched her perform that same routine once she had overcome her initial shyness around him?
"John?" Her question awoke him from his daydreaming.
"Yeah darlin'?"
"Are you all right?" Without turning, her right hand moved backwards across her shoulder until their fingers met.
"I'm...I'm okay...Just...thinking, that's all." His hands drifted until they were folded gently around her waist. "I was remembering the evening when you first came here, and I took you to dinner. You had that pretty black shawl...."
"Which you took every opportunity to wrap around me."
"That obvious, eh?"
"I didn't mind. I may not have said anything one way or the other, but I never minded." She turned and took hold of both hands, starting to pull him along. "Now Sheriff Biebe, if *you* don't mind, I want to show you off to the rest of the Nest."
John allowed her to guide him towards the front door, his eyes twinkling. It amazed him how that ball gown seemed to transform her until she possessed an elegance he would never have expected, even from her. "Well, they'd better take a quick look cause I reserved the private room for dinner. Whoever's there will only see us as we come in and as we leave."
"Then we'll just have to make a grand entrance, won't we?" she said, picking up the pace as they walked through the sitting room.
Smiling thoughtfully he replied, "I don't
think you'll be able to do anything but that, sweetheart."
Part Four
Jeffrey and Brynn walked down the main stairway in the hotel, arm in arm, both feeling a little awkward at the arrangement, but glad to be not going to the dinner alone.
"You look wonderful tonight," Jeffrey commented as they reached the entrance to the ballroom. "That dress is... well it's very nice."
Brynn blushed at the comment. "Thank you Jeffrey, you look nice as well." She stepped back and waited while Jeffrey opened the enormous door for her, then she walked inside, stunned at the ambiance of the room.
Everything was done in complete elegance, white, ivory and cream colored balloons floated along the ceiling with silver ribbons hanging down from each one. Each table had enough for six place settings, with cream colored table clothes, silverware perfectly polished and placed next to cream colored plates, outlined with silver as well. On the walls hung cream and ivory nylon streamers, giving each wall the appearance of a window, although the only windows in the place were those that looked out onto the English gardens, two on either side of a huge pair of glass paned doors. The doors opened onto a small brick path that led out into the gardens.
Jeffrey lead Brynn around the tables, looking for the place settings that had their names on them. Each table was complete with six name cards written by one of the regular guests in a neat calligraphy script. Finding their cards, Jeffrey pulled out Brynn's chair and allowed her to take her seat before seating himself beside her.
"This is beautiful," Brynn said lifting the card with her name on it closer to her face, amazed at the elegance and precision that had been applied to each. "I really wish this were my birthday celebration now." Jeffrey simply smiled at her and nodded his head.
"Look at these," he commented lifting the menu off his plate. The menus were a silver colored metal, perhaps even sterling silver to match the trim on the plates and some of the decorations in the room. The actual dinner menu was carved with script writing on each, with the assortment of choices for appetizers, cocktails and the dinner itself. On the back of each menu was engraved 'A gift for you, to always remember this evening. Always ~ John and Tina'. The date was slightly below their names. (View Menu)
"Amazing," Brynn gasped as she read the small inscription on her menu. "This is nothing short of incredible."
"There's more," Jeffrey said pointing to the silver bowl on the table, directly in the center.
"Oh, Tina's favorite." Brynn put her menu back on her plate and turned her attention to the silver bowl that contained several white roses spilling out in all directions, almost cascading down to the tablecloth. In the center of the arrangement was one pink rose bud. "The pink one stands for passion. This could not have been more perfect. I can't believe John did all of this and Tina never found out about it."
Jeffrey smiled. "I know, it took a lot of hard work, on everyone's part."
"I can imagine." Brynn's attention drifted to another detail on their table. The champagne and wine menu lay next to the silver bowl of roses. It's elegance and appearance matched the dinner menu on her plate. "Look," Brynn said raising the champagne list. "They've got Dom Perignon. This is going to be some special party."
Brynn's attention wandered around the room, watching everyone come in and find their seats, seeing how elegant everyone looked, and still in awe of the decorations that made up the room. She saw NJ enter on Mannie's arm. Having already checked the table to find out who they were being seated with, Brynn waved to the couple. "You two are with us."
"Oh good." Mannie said sarcastically, as he led NJ to the table and pulled out her chair. Brynn returned his comment with a sweet smile.
Brynn was busy pointing out all of the special little extras to NJ when the other couple that would share their table approached. "Good evening ladies and gentleman," Sid said.
Brynn and NJ spun around at the same time, NJ with a pained expression on her face, Brynn with delight. Standin up, she hugged Sid then looked to the woman on his arm. "You must be Lady."

"Yeah, that's me," she replied with a bright smile.
"You look amazing this evening Brynn." Sid took her hand in his and spun her in a graceful pirouette so he could take in the sight. "I think this dress really captures you're spirit."
"NJ said almost the same thing," Brynn replied with a blush. "She's the one who actually picked it out for me."
Sid looked at NJ and gave her a soft smile, knowing she was still slightly afraid of him and not completely blaming her. He tried to convey with his eyes that she had nothing to fear from him this night.
Sitting back at their seats the three couples made small talk about the beauty that surrounded them. Brynn kept glancing toward the door, where Colin was standing his post. Jeffrey had explained to her that he was the one to announce that Tina was on her way so everyone there could stand and greet her with a hearty 'surprise' welcoming.
"Looks like our guard boy has a bit of a problem keeping his attention on the task at hand," Brynn whispered to NJ. Both girls turned in their seats to watch Colin as he watched Michelle make her way from their table to the door. She'd been checking on the arrival herself and each time she approached or departed, Colin was completely entranced by her. "I think it's that dress." Brynn watched as Michelle went back to the door, giving Colin a slight wave and then turning him by one shoulder, back to face the door. The dress she wore that had Colin so tied up in his underwear, was a purplish blue color made from a silk taffeta material. It had a very low back to it stopping just before it gave everyone a nice view of Chelle's backside. The front was just as low cut as the back, stopping around her navel. The slits in the sides were hip level, showing off her shapely legs.
The jewelry she wore accented and complimented the dress perfectly.
NJ nodded her agreement. "That is really... something."

Part Five
(written by Michelle)

Colin's eyes darted from his duty of watching for Tina and John, to watching Michelle's back, his gaze falling over her curves as her hips swayed gently to the quiet music that filtered through the room. He found his eyes glued to the soft, inviting look of her skin, the way the dark dress shimmered under the lights.
Slowly she turned to face him, his eyes traveling up her torso, lingering over her breasts and throat before meeting her gaze. She smiled at him, her blue eyes shining. He blinked as she started back towards him. It seemed as though she were walking on air and he couldn't take his eyes off her. She'd always look beautiful to him, from the first moment he'd set eyes on her months ago. But tonight she was simply breathtaking. Chelle rarely dressed up, but she'd gone all out for this special occasion. The dark dress flowed over her, the soft lights of the room and the silk taffeta material accenting each movement. A matching choker drew Colin's eyes back to her throat and the urge to kiss her there was overwhelming.
"You're doing a terrible job of keeping watch, Mr. O'Brien." She came to his side, her thigh brushing the outside of his leg and her hand sliding beneath the jacket of his tux. She leaned in, her lips grazing his ear. "The door's on the other side of the room...."
He shivered as her breath teased the sensitive area behind his ear. "Bloody hell, woman." He breathed through his open mouth, his gaze flickering momentarily towards the entryway. It quickly returned to Michelle. She was smiling at him again, her eyes teasing. He lowered his gaze, letting it fall onto her throat and then down to the welcoming skin between her breasts.
A finger under his chin pulled his gaze upward again. "Colin." She licked her lips. "The door..." She stepped back and turned towards the door herself, craning her neck and giving him a magnificent view of her throat. With a swing of her hips he also received a glimpse of her long legs.
"Colin?" He blinked, blushing as he lifted his eyes from her hips back to her face. "You seem to have a one track mind tonight, my love."
Colin swallowed. "What do you except when you... you dress like this?"
"Do you want me to go change? I'd just love to get out of these high heels... my feet are going to be killing me by the end of the night." She watched him, her face all seriousness.
He shook his head adamantly, his eyes suddenly filled with uncertainty. "No...but..." Then his eyes lit up and he smiled. "I could help you with those feet later."
She giggled as she planted a soft kiss on his lips. "Watch the door Colin, or John's going to have your ass in a sling." Her right hand slid around his waist and over to his backside. "And I wouldn't want anything to happen to this beautiful ass." Colin flinched as she pinched his left butt cheek and than patted him there with an added sweet smile before she returned to her watch at the door.
He watched her go, his hand rubbing his
backside. He took a deep breath and groaned as he saw her hips
swaying again to the music. "Bloody hell, woman... you're going to be
the death of me."
Part Six
Looking around some more NJ leaned over to talk to Brynn once again. "Look, Trisha made it, maybe now Bud will calm down and lay off you a bit."
Brynn followed NJ's finger and found Bud White just as he turned in his seat to star daggers at her. "I think it'll take Trisha and a bottle of Valium," she giggled. She brought her hand up and gave Bud a slight wave and the sweetest smile she could muster.
"She's coming," Colin yelled to the group from his station by the doors. Everyone simultaneously got to his or her feet to greet the guest of honor. The waiter and waitresses had gone from table to table a few minutes before, pouring everyone a glass of champagne for the first toast of the evening. Now, everyone picked up their glass and held it, waiting for Tina to enter. A hush fell over the crowd as everyone waited. Finally the great doors began to open.
"That's one thing I need to remember to do the next time I see Max," Tina was saying a few minutes later. She and John descended the hotel's grand staircase, their arms linked, while her free hand pulled up the hem of her gown's skirt.
"What's that, darlin'?"
"Thank him for the way things turned out that evening -- I mean, you taking me to dinner in his place. It's not that I don't think we would have eventually hooked up...."
"Yeah, but we might have gone about it in such a roundabout way. I had...."
"No one's here." Her voice caused the sheriff to pause as he, too, looked about. They were about halfway down the stairs, in full view of the beautiful lobby, and it was quite apparent that it was empty, something which hardly ever happened. Cautiously, John touched her arm as if to tell her to stay put, and slowly -- looking about as he went -- he completed the distance and stepped into the quiet of the spacious area. It was almost eerie, Tina considered, for normally someone was present, whether it was Peaches or the ever devoted Cort, or one of the other Boyz taking care of check-ins. Even the cleaning crews were missing. In fact, about the only time she had seen it devoid of people was extremely late at night. "Everything look all right?" she asked in a strong manner.
"Seems to be. I just think everyone decided to clear out for the evening."
"This early?" She took another step, glancing to her left, then to the right. "It's only a little after seven."
"Well, Zach and Bugdog were telling me earlier about Peaches arranging for some kind of movie party at the Tavern. Or 'Star Trek' or 'Star Wars' party or something."
"Oh," Tina giggled. "That'd be up several people's alleys all right. I know Laura's been trying to give Max a crash course in 'Star Trek'."
"And of course a bunch of them can sit around and discuss which is better: 'Star Trek' or 'Star Wars'; Picard or Kirk...."
"Who would you rather have with you to kick ass in a dark alley: Ripley from the first two movies or Luke Skywalker?" At her comment the couple looked at each other, laughed and said simultaneously, "Ripley!"
"I was hoping everyone would get a chance to see how pretty you look tonight," John said. "Well, if they're all hiding out at the Tavern, we can stop by there later after we eat." Tina moved one more step when she suddenly noticed the Alaskan shake his head at her. "What?" She looked around, thinking that something had happened she was now unaware of.
His reply was to smile softly as he looked up at her. "It's just.... Seeing you standing there like that...I was just...."
"What?" she repeated, smiling as she stood still, her eyes affixed in his direction. When he suddenly raised a hand towards her, a rush came over her as she realized what he had remembered. Her smile widening, she walked nearer until she was a step or two above him, and before she could speak, John reached out and took her left hand in his right. Tina sighed, her body nearly trembling when his lips pressed against the back of her hand, the softness of his well-groomed beard leaving her tingling, her stomach contracting at his touch. It was difficult to believe that a year ago, she thought no man would be able to elicit such feelings from her. It was not that she had not desired such intimacy. She just believed she would spend her life in loneliness....
When John straightened and looked at her once more, he chuckled. "I saw that in one of Tina's favorite movies once and I always wanted to do it." The paraphrasing of a line from her all-time favorite movie caused her to giggle as she came to his side
"Well, as long as the hotel doesn't sink when dinner's over..."
"The weather report swore there's not a single iceberg in sight. But I know where all the lifeboats are if something happens."
"I like a man who's prepared."
"I was a Boy Scout, darlin'. We're *always* prepared."
The two moved through the lobby, their footsteps echoing in the now cavernous setting as they approached the hotel restaurant, talking and laughing as they went. As they prepared however to enter the familiar hallway which led into the main dining area, Tina felt her companion direct her off to the left instead, along another passageway.
"We're not going to the restaurant then?"
"Well, like I was saying, I had them do up the private dining room for the occasion."
"You really didn't have to do that though. I love the dining rooms here."
"I know, but...hey, it's your birthday, and the first one you've celebrated at the Nest. I wanted to make it a bit more special for you. I knew we'd never used that room before, and it's a bit more intimate."
"You just want me all to yourself, John Biebe," she teased, watching him turn a light shade of crimson. "But I'm game. I can't think of a better way to spend my birthday than with you."
John's eyes grew quite loving as he leaned down enough to briefly kiss her on the forehead. "I'm glad you could, darlin'. I want to make sure this is a birthday you'll never forget. Okay, that's it on your right...."
She had not felt this excited in a long
while, for she had attended very few true black tie events in her
life. There had been more casual formal evenings since her visits to
the Nest started: the "apology" supper Trisha had arranged last
summer; the "make-up" dinner John organized for just the two of them,
that one resembling the last dinner on 'Titanic'. That was why Tina
had not minded when John asked if -- for the birthday meal he planned
for them -- she would consider dressing more formally for their time
together. She didn't get to do this very often, so it was a pleasure
shopping for a new gown, especially since losing nearly one hundred
pounds meant finding a sexy Jessica McClintock design. Anything would
be a pleasant change from the Class B blue uniform she wore at work.
Still she could not help thinking, as John pulled open the door for
her, it would be nice for someone else to see her this way.
Part Seven
"Surprise!" came a chorus of voices, and Tina froze in the doorway, eyes growing large as she stared into the grand ballroom, an area she never knew existed. It was full of people, all of them her closest friends, their crystal champagne flutes raised in a toast to her on this special evening. Momentarily she could only gasp as she closed her eyes, then reopened them, uncertain she was comprehending exactly what was happening. Her line of sight drifted, taking in the elaborate decorations...the table settings, the balloons, then back to her friends again. There was such a dumbfounded expression on her face, several persons moved forward, looking at her as if they thought she was about to faint. Her vision blurred on feeling somewhat lightheaded, and all she could see were...She wasn't sure who: was that Kath, East, maybe Trisha, Brynn, NJ?
"Tina?" John asked in a concerned voice, stepping nearer so as to steady her. "Tina darlin'?"
"Are you all right, sweetie?" came Michelle's voice, and she could also hear Laura asking, "Is she all right?" Others began to chime in: "What happened?" "Is she okay?" "John, what's wrong with her?" "Tina...what's the matter? What's wrong?"
Tina shook her head as though to clear it, and she began to search the anxious faces. Exhaling deeply, she finally smiled, a sign that everyone should breathe a sigh of relief.
"Sweetheart, you okay?" John questioned. When she nodded her response, the sheriff took the opportunity to gently kiss the technician's cheek before he said, "Happy Birthday, Tina." She felt his warm breath against her ear, the brush of his lips upon the shell as he whispered, "I'll love you forever, darlin'."
She gulped again, trying not to cry but finding it more difficult. She looked up into those blue-green eyes, seeing such affection there she couldn't resist placing several fingertips against his beard. Although the couple normally did not openly show their emotions, that was forgotten as Tina gave him a gentle peck on his mouth. A few onlookers made an "Aw" sound, however most remained quiet, just taking in the feelings between the two. Suddenly realizing they were not alone, they began to turn red, ducking their heads slightly as two or three began to applaud. Sighing, Tina finally said, "But...But I thought....How did you....When did you...."
"You wouldn't believe how hush-hush this whole operation was," he explained. "I was surprised somebody didn't give something away, but we lucked out."
"Doubt we'll ever be able to do it again, love, but there's a first time for everything around this place," Colin added. "John mate, I'd like to be one of the first." He gave Tina a quick kiss on the forehead. "Happy Birthday, Sheila."
"Happy Birthday, sweetie. Many happy returns," Michelle said, smiling before she embraced Tina, just as Laura and the Spaniard stepped up. The longtime girlfriends also hugged, while Maximus stepped behind them, massaging an arm of the woman he still held such a special place for in his heart.
"Dearest Tina...many best wishes and long life to you," the general greeted as Tina reached up and gave him a gentle hug.
"Thanks Max." She couldn't say any more, her voice beginning to tighten with emotion.
"Hey, don't hog it, Gladiator," Bud teased as he and Trisha walked up. "Remember, my movie made an impression with her first." Everyone laughed as he took an opportunity to give her a hug and kiss. "I still think you like 'L.A. Confidential' best, doll. I don't care what you told these other two slobs." The cop looked first at Maximus, then Biebe, both of whom were rolling their eyes while they chuckled.
"Oh Bud...promise you'll never change," she smiled.
"Trying not to. And if the sheriff here doesn't mind, I'd like a spot on your dance card for later on."
"It's a deal. After all, you were the first one I ever danced with when I came to the Nest. Did you know that, Trisha?"
She nodded. "I remembered reading that in your posts. Benny Goodman, wasn't it?"
"Yep, the great Goodman," Bud said, winking at Tina. "I just want to let her know there's always a better dancer around if she needs a partner who doesn't step on her feet."
"Don't even go there, White," John said jokingly.
"Aw come on, John. Ask Tina. Never once have I stepped on her feet, have I?"
Tina smiled, punching Bud playfully in the arm. "I don't know how you put up with this guy, Trisha."
"Neither do I," the Englishwoman said as she linked arms with him, giving him a short kiss. "Happy Birthday, Tina. Glad I could be here for this."
"So am I."
"Well, John made sure we all knew about it," Kath added as she kissed Tina's cheek. "Happy Birthday, hon...He had Michelle contact us, and tell us what was up. We couldn't miss out on it. I don't think your sheriff would have let us live it down if we had." Biebe was shaking his head, and while there was a twinkle in his eyes, he was attempting to strike a pose of absolute seriousness.
"Yes, John was very insistent we all be here," Trisha explained, laughing. "Told us if we missed it, he had no intention of forgetting."
"I wanted this to be perfect," the Alaskan told them, as Tina slipped an arm around his waist. "And it couldn't be if all her best friends couldn't be here to help us celebrate. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way."
NormaJean and Mannie eased into the group next. While the enigmatic figure from 'The Silver Brumby' felt about as close to Biebe and Tina as he ever would anyone, he managed to whisper a birthday greeting to the guest of honor. He was about to kiss her on the cheek, but at the last moment paused, looking at John for some type of approval. When he saw the sheriff smile and nod his silent blessing, the horse wrangler gave her a peck before stepping away for his companion. NormaJean kissed Tina as well, and leaning close, softly said, "You know he likes you and John very much?"
Tina smiled. She already knew the answer. "I know, NormaJean."
The younger girl turned her friend aside for a moment. "And it was so sweet of John to do this for you. A lot of men in the Real World would never be this thoughtful, but then...these guys aren't like a lot of men, are they?" Tina could only shake her head, glancing back to see John laugh at some joke Maximus had made. "Remember...." She paused.
"Remember? Remember what, NJ?"
"Remember at Christmas, after the fireworks when we were all standing outside, and John and Mannie were speaking while we did. And...And I asked you...if you had ever been happier in your life?"
Shutting her eyes, Tina conjured the moment, a warm feeling washing over her body as she looked back at her companion again. "I remember, but it's changed now."
NormaJean was momentarily shocked. "Changed? What do you.... Tina, I don't...."
"I didn't think I could love John more than I did at Christmas and at Valentine's...but I do."
"Oh Tina." The girl giggled, relieved. "Tina...don't you dare do that again." They both laughed almost simultaneous with another voice screaming out, "Tina-Lady -- Happy Birthday!" and they turned to see Stef running towards them. Her eyes bright and alive, she was so giddy, Tina couldn't help smiling back as they embraced. Andy was close behind, accompanied by a young woman she vaguely remembered for she was a new arrival: Jennifer, that was it. The bartender had been telling her about the newcomer, and not only how fond they had become of one another, but that he honestly believed the Connection had been made. Tina recalled her first meeting with her. The poor girl had accidentally run into John, and was a mess of nerves when she calmed her down. They had only seen each other a couple of times since, but they talked and were becoming friends. Out of the corner of her vision, she noticed Kelly lightheartedly dragging Zack along. Although he looked as though he wanted to be anywhere else -- he was continually pulling at the collar of his tuxedo, which earned a slap from Bugdog -- he managed a brave face all the same.
Even Rick had managed to get off for the evening so he could join Jeff Mitchell, and Annabella had left directing the kitchen to briefly join her Alex.
It was like that for a better part of fifteen minutes as people gave their best wishes, and then extended them a second and third time in the impromptu receiving line. There were compliments on how beautiful the birthday girl looked, whether it was the gown, the accessories, or her hair style. There was praise for Biebe's handling of the entire event, not only for managing to keep the conspiracy secret (especially in the Nest), but for taking such great care in every detail. Everyone agreed that in all the years of the Nest's existence, there had been nothing like this. Tina was becoming dizzy she was being kissed and embraced and congratulated so much. Seeing that she was becoming overwhelmed, John decided to step in. Locating a spoon and a Champagne glass from a nearby waiter, he jumped up on the platform overlooking the ballroom, and tapped the edge of the crystal.
"Could I have everyone's attention?!" he called out, his normally quiet voice nearly booming. The guests began to calm. "Thank you." Putting down the glass and spoon, he then held out a hand to where Tina stood, surrounded by most of her girlfriends. "Tina darlin'...."
Knowing what he wanted, she tentatively moved towards him, just as Kel gave her a gentle push and softly added, "Go to him T. He's waiting." The group applauded as Tina walked the short distance, allowing the sheriff to pull her up beside him, her blush intensifying.
Bending closer, John whispered, "Do you want to speak to them, or do you want me to?"
"I can," she said softly.
"Okay, darlin' -- they're all yours."
Clearing her throat, she swallowed, glancing at the Alaskan before she turned to the many faces again. "I...I...I want...Thank you all for coming," she finally managed before looking at John with a loving smile and the shimmer of unshed tears in her eyes. Her short greeting earned more applause, a few whistles, and a "Way to Go Tina!" and "Go for it girlfriend!"
"Everybody!" John now spoke since he realized that his partner was now unable. "Everybody! I...just wanted to take a minute to add my thanks to Tina's. I wasn't even sure we could pull this off, knowing how people around here love to talk."
"That's for you, Andy," Steve called out, which earned some laughter as Jennifer -- who was standing nearby -- gave him a writhing stare and clearly told him, "Watch your mouth, Steve!" Her comment earned her a slight hug from the young bartender.
Biebe raised a hand to indicate he wished to continue. "Well, I know how hard it is for the Nest to keep a secret, but you actually did, and I want to thank you for that. I also want to thank all of you for...well...I know we all love to relax around this place, so it was great that you went along with me asking that we do this black tie. I...I wanted this to be special for Tina, seeing that it's her first birthday here with us." There was a chorus of 'No problem, John,' 'Loved doing it,' and 'Anytime'. "So...I'm not going to talk any longer. I know we're all dressed up, but I want you to have a fantastic time. It's a party after all. There's plenty to eat, plenty to drink, and since none of us have anything planned for tomorrow...Uh -- right Peaches?" That question made everyone turn to look at the Nest's owner, and on seeing her nod, the large group laughed and applauded. "Since none of us have anything planned for tomorrow then...I hope we'll be able to dance 'til dawn as they say. So have a great time."
Accompanied by more applause, John took Tina's hand. He jumped down from the platform, then helped guide her down, knowing she didn't want to damage her gown. While a few dispersed, others who had not had the opportunity gathered around Tina to give her their best wishes.
The smartly attired waiters now began to circulate more than before, their sterling silver trays laden with a Bollinger 1990 Brut Champagne Grande Annee and a Schrasmberg 1994 Reserve Napa Valley sparkling wine. The very special Dom Perignon would come at the conclusion of dinner, likely when toasts would be made. An open bar was also maintained so that drinks from martinis to beer, daiquiris to Manhattans, whiskey sours to brandy were available. Biebe had stressed he wanted everything as perfect as possible, and Annabella had happily agreed, being a perfectionist herself.
Simultaneously, waiters also moved about with trays containing appetizers which only hinted at the dinner to come. The engraved menus had given everyone a clue as to what was available, but the elaborate presentation still amazed them. Thinly sliced smoked salmon, caviar and cream cheese sat atop tiny pieces of toasted homemade wheat bread. Various fruits and vegetables in season were served with creamy dips, while sterling dishes containing two varieties of caviar were featured. There were miniature Quiche Lorraines, petite Beef Wellingtons, and petite Burger Bordelaise; brushetta, Mozzarella in Carozza, and Seafood Barquettes. The second the guests thought they had seen everything, something different would appear.
"What's this?" Arthur asked, pointing at one item as he piled his small china plate with several selections. "It looks interesting."
"Arthur," young Johnny admonished him. "I think they're going to feed us more for dinner. Didn't you see the menu on the table?"
"Yeah, you don't have to stuff yourself on those little things," Jeff Mitchell added. "What are those called, Rick?"
"Vol-Au-Vent Florentine," the off-duty waiter explained. "Puff pastry shells stuffed with spinach leaves and topped with mozzarella." On seeing the questioning looks he added, "Well, Annabella told me what was going to be fixed even though I was off. Me and a couple of others helped her order all the supplies for tonight."
Arthur popped one into his mouth as he added two more to his plate. "It's great. We never had stuff like this at home. I like these too," and he put another Quiche Lorraine and Beef Wellington on the dish.
"Want something to wash that down, Artie?" Bud asked as he and Trisha strolled up, the latter with Champagne, while the cop carried a glass containing what appeared to be scotch or bourbon on the rocks. His question earned him a sharp jab to the ribs. "Ow...Hey, what was that for?" He was somewhat embarrassed, especially since there were people watching.
"Quit trying to corrupt the boy, Wendell," Trisha told him, giving him the 'you'd better behave tonight or John will kill you' look.
"Well hell, it's a party. The sheriff wants us to enjoy ourselves."
"Only if you boys behave yourselves. If you do anything to ruin this evening, John is going to skin you alive...and I'll be helping him."
"Doll...."
"Don't 'doll' me, White," she said, only half-jokingly. "I mean it. You ruin this for John and Tina and we're going to have another long talk."
Bud sighed, but nodded. "I'd never do something like that, Trisha. You should know me better than that." His voice dropped some as he and Trisha moved away from the younger men. "I just don't know why John decided to invite *some* people...."
"Some people? Like?"
"Like..." and he nodded his head to where Sid was standing next to Brynn and Jeffrey Wigand, the former Brown and Williamson scientist appearing quite surprised by how well-behaved the normally psychotic cyber-maniac was acting.
"Like Jeff Wigand?" Trisha joked, knowing how that would make Bud react.
"You know I don't mean...No, not Jeff."
"Okay, I admit Sid being here is a bit...well...different, but Lady and Tawny told me he's promised to behave himself."
"Even after all the things he's done to both Tina and John?"
"And Colin and East, and Michelle and Kath, but it was John's decision to ask him. He said he wanted this to be special evening for everyone at the Nest. He didn't want anyone to feel left out, or it wouldn't be the same, so please don't start." Trisha could have sworn that Bud was about to pout, but instead, he gave her a kiss which nearly swept her off her feet. When they parted, she sighed deeply, laying her head against him. "That was...was...."
"A promise of things to come."
She smiled softly. "You'll be a good boy then?"
"I'll be a good boy, yes."
"And you'll be nice to Brynn too?" She swore she could hear a rumbling in his chest as he tensed. "Wendell?"
"I'll be nice to Brynn too," he finally sighed. "For John and Tina's sake." Although why did he have this feeling in the back of his mind, that Tina might need to watch that girl as well. John was about the only one she had yet to throw herself at. He suddenly noticed that East was motioning at him. "Trisha -- I'll be right back."
"Where are you...."
"East wants me for something -- don't know what though. I'll be right back," he repeated, briefly kissing her cheek before he rushed over to join a small group consisting of East, Mannie, Maximus, Cort, Zach and Alex. "Guys -- what's up?"
Zach -- pulling at his collar yet again -- spoke up first. "We need to talk to John."
"Talk to John? What about?"
Maximus chuckled deeply. "They have a complaint to issue with him."
"Must not be much of one if you're laughing, Max."
"I don't think so," the general admitted, but Alex was vehemently shaking his head before he said, "Max hasn't had a chance to think this through yet. When he does, he'll change his mind." Maximus rolled his eyes, his laughter increasing. "Okay...laugh it up now, Gladiator. You just wait."
"I just feel as if some of you are making more of this than needs to be."
"What the hell are you talking about?" Bud demanded.
It was now Cort's turn to offer his opinion. "A few of we attached guys are concerned that with John doing this big spread for Tina's birthday, the other gals are going to want the same thing when theirs roll around."
"Which is ridiculous," Maximus countered. "John knows Tina enjoys these type of affairs. I've heard him speak of how much she loves the opera and theater and the like; she enjoys dressing up as well. This was something he knew would please her. If I attempted to throw something of this level for Laura's birthday, she might be touched by the thought, but she wouldn't care for it. Laura doesn't like formal things."
Zach snorted. "Well after tonight she might change her mind. I mean...shit...Kelly made me put this on. She said, 'If I have to dress up, so do you. And we're both going to do this right because John asked us.'" He paused to take a sip of his beer. "If I didn't...I honestly think she would have beat me with her hockey stick." Alex, Bud and Cort snickered, while Maximus covered his mouth. "Oh yeah...that's funny isn't it? She might be little, but she packs a hell of a punch. I wasn't making her mad."
"Hell, I don't mind doing something like this for Kath," East admitted, which earned him a sharp glance from a couple of his brothers. "Well I don't! You should have seen how beautiful Kath looked at Valentine's. She's not one for dressing up either, but every now and then she doesn't mind, and when she does...." He sighed, recalling the memory.
"Yeah, but that's the difference. You did something for Kath privately, see," Cort said.
"Exactly. I just don't know why John couldn't have thrown her a nice little dinner in her apartment," Alex complained. "Then the two of them could have dressed up and none of us would have had to."
"Because obviously John wanted this to be really special for her," Bud countered. "Look...the two of them went through a rough spell, remember? We didn't know if they'd ever get back together again."
"Absolutely," Max agreed. "They were both in pieces."
"I know," Zach admitted, as Alex and Cort nodded in agreement. "But...."
"But why is he making all of us participate?" Bud continued. "Maybe because he loves her so much he wanted to make this something extra special, and he wanted all of us to share it. For John, this is like being back in Mystery sometimes -- just another small town where everyone feels like family."
"Bud's right. As I said, Laura would not wish anything this formal...."
"Trisha wouldn't either."
"Neither would Kath, but she was so thrilled when she heard about this, she said she couldn't wait. But it was because John asked, and it was on Tina's behalf."
"And any other birthday Tina spends here at the Nest may be some quiet affair in her room or John's. The same for any other celebration they might have, be it John's birthday, or the anniversary of their meeting. But he asked us to participate this one night, and we all happily agreed because John is our brother, and we care for him. We're quite aware of how deep his feelings are for Tina." Cort, Alex and Zach nodded grudgingly, knowing Maximus was correct. "This is something he wishes to share with the world -- and with all of us. I don't think it's right for us to complain when he's obviously so happy." They all looked to where John and Tina stood, their arms around each other's waists, as they spoke with Lachlan, Liz, Terry and Peaches.
"Yeah, and Tina's happy too, isn't she?" Cort asked, sighing. "I thought she was going to pass out there for a minute."
Maximus smiled as he watched Laura stroll over to the little group, giving her close friend another hug. Laura definitely hated dressing up, but even she had agreed because it had been John's request, and several of the girls had helped her select an outfit. The general thought she looked beautiful in a long, clingy black dress -- and he couldn't wait to get her out of it later that night. "So just let it be, all right, gentlemen? Believe me, if I have to suffer in this," and he straightened his cummerbund, "all of you do too."

"Hey guys!" Stef called, walking up to them. "Has anyone told you all how handsome you look?" The group almost reddened all at once. "Aw geez...what did I say?"
Bud appeared the most flustered of all. "What did you...? Shit Stef...why do you...? You...."
"You...Uh...What Po-Po?" the Texan teased, laughing and knowing she'd hit a nerve. "I just said you guys look handsome. Not my fault the slightest compliment makes all of you turn beet red. And why the hell are all of you conspiring this way?"
Alex straightened. "What makes you think we're conspiring?"
"Just because," she grinned. "Hey, I see you all with your heads together like this. What am I supposed to think? Well...carry on gentlemen," she added with a salute. "I've got places to go, people to see."
"Trouble to make," Maximus said, smiling and winking at her.
"Who me? Nah, I'd better get back to Hando. He's still not sure about this kind of stuff, but he's doing okay so far."
"Well you look great, Stef," Bud told her, and the others added their compliments as well. "You're turning a lot of heads tonight."
"You're not going to do something stupid are you, Po-Po?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. She was remembering the night during her first days at the Nest -- when she had worn something rather daring, causing a few of the Boyz to become overly protective.
"Who me?" Bud repeated back at her. She laughed before turning away to find Hando, who was deep in conversation with Jeff Mitchell, Rick and Trisha. "Tell Trisha I'll be there in a sec...I'd better go fellas. So that's it then? Or do I have to stand here and listen to some of you bitch some more?"
"Never mind them, Bud," East said. "Get back to Trisha before she hooks up with someone else."
"I'm out of here then," the cop grinned, picking up his pace as he hurried across the ballroom floor to where his partner waited.
"So you have it out of your systems then?" Maximus asked, his question directed at Cort, Alex and Zach. "You're not going to say anything to John, am I right?"
Zach shook his head. "Shit Max, are you kidding? And get the hell beaten out of me by you *and* Kelly?"
"Yeah, I don't think Peaches would take it very well if I complained. Besides...I don't know about you all, but my Peaches looks awfully sweet tonight."
"Alex?" Max received no immediate answer. "Alex?"
"I'm thinking." East gave him a playful shove, which caused him to say, "All right, all right. I'll be good. Annabella would never forgive me."
The conversation ended at just the right moment. Some of the ladies in question were coming that way, just behind the happy couple. Max smiled softly, first at Laura, then at Tina. The technician was blushing a little at something Biebe was whispering in her ear, and Max could not help but recall her shyness on the evening they all met. Had that actually been about nine months before? Nine months since she stood silent at their table when Bud introduced her? He remembered she was stunned to meet him, but it had been even more so when she and John faced one another. Maximus suspected it that moment: their connection was made, and he was only thankful everything had worked out as it was supposed to before someone was deeply hurt.
"Guys," John said as they came over. The men all greeted him and Tina, while Laura came to Max's side and Kelly eased her way to Zach's, giving him a slight kiss on the cheek as their arms linked. "Tina and I are just trying to make the rounds. Everyone doing okay?"
"We're having a wonderful time, John," Maximus spoke first before winking at Tina. "And I'll say it again my dear, all the best wishes of the day."
"Thanks Max," she whispered, still obviously overwhelmed by the events of the night. "I..." She exhaled, looking about as she gathered her thoughts. "I...still don't know what to say. I can't believe you all went to all this trouble for my birthday."
"It was John's idea that got us all going," East told her. "Once he gets something in his head...."
"He's a fireball," Cort said.
Kath grinned. "You can't help but get caught up in his enthusiasm. He wanted this so much for you, Tina."
"Well, I just figured a quiet dinner in the restaurant," she admitted, not noticing the looks Alex and Zach exchanged. Bugdog did however, crushing the toe of her shoe on top of one of Zach's black shoes, before gracefully moving just enough to carefully apply equal pressure to Alex's foot. The two men almost emitted a sharp curse, but caught themselves. They got the point. Tina was continuing: "I never, never expected something like this."
"Anything for you, darlin'," John told her, gently patting the hand he held.
"The Nest has never seen anything like it," Liz admitted, squirming a little as Terry placed an arm around her, giving her a brief kiss. "But like John said, I'm just shocked no one spilled the beans."
"It'll never happen again," Peaches said, as everyone laughed. "This was one of those once in a lifetime events the Nest will never witness again."
"Aw...don't say that, Peaches," Terry said. "This has been great. Another nice intro for me to this place. But I have to admit Tina...there were K&R operations that weren't as secretive as this one."
"Well, when John Biebe threatens you on pain of death," Maximus joked. "It's true. He can handle a hockey stick as well as I do a sword. I'm not messing with him."
"Hey," the Alaskan exclaimed, pretending to be indignant. "Pain of death? Isn't that a bit...dramatic? I only said that if you guys didn't pitch in, I'd kick your behinds from here to eternity. The ladies were already cooperating."
"That's right!" Laura said.
"Just a little arm-twisting, that's all," John continued. "You've done it enough with me."
"Well, whatever or however John got you all to do this, thanks," Tina said softly. "I'll never forget it."

"Hey John, Tina!!" a voice shouted, and everyone turned to see young Johnny rushing up to the small group. "The D.J. wants to know if anyone's ready to dance while we're having cocktails?"
"Yeah, he can start the music now, that's fine. I want anybody that wants to go ahead and dance."
"John..." Kath began, walking over to the couple, "you and Tina should have the first dance of the evening. It's her birthday."
There was a chorus of "Yeah!" "That's right John!" "Go for it John!" "Don't step on Tina's feet John."
John bowed his head, his eyes raised to look into his companion's face. "Tina...would you dance with me?"
"You know I will," she said softly, accepting his hand as they moved towards the center of the ballroom.
Colin made an announcement that the 'birthday girl' and her partner were going to take the floor first, and the crowd dispersed to form a circle around the dance area. As everyone applauded, John gathered Tina close to him as the opening strands of Nat King Cole's 'Unforgettable' filled the room. There were a few whispers at how Biebe's dancing skills continued to improve, but besides that, no one spoke as they watched the couple slow dance to the song they had first heard on going to dinner together months before. The affection between the two was quite obvious as they looked in one another's eyes, often speaking, but everyone knew that as far as John and Tina were concerned, no others existed in the chamber but them. There were moments when their hands intwined as though drawing warmth off the other, while the hand about Tina's waist would brush along her back or towards her hips, his passion for her evident. When King sang the final line 'That's why darling...it's incredible, that someone so unforgettable, thinks that I am...unforgettable too,' they kissed briefly, gently, still dancing a little then the notes faded, both of them lost in the other.
"I love you, sweetheart," the sheriff whispered, giving that little hand signal she had loved from his movie. "Happy Birthday again."
She sighed happily, easing her arms about his neck as she said, "I love you too, John" just as the ballroom filled with shouts and more clapping. Suddenly realizing that were not alone, they separated just as a totally different song -- 'Love Shack' -- began.
"Well just don't stand there people!" John shouted to them. "Is this a party or what?!" That was all the encouragement some of them needed as the floor partially filled with dancers, and Tina and a few others began to launch into the song's first verse.
Cocktails were served until nearly eight-thirty, while dancing continued as well, mostly slow songs in order for the guests not to over exert themselves before eating. So far, it was all going well: large amounts of hors d'oeuvres were consumed; the drinks flowed, but everyone was careful not to overdo it. After all, a lot of them intended to do exactly as the host had suggested: dance until dawn. Sid, under Tawny and Lady's supervision -- if the cyber-psycho could ever be supervised -- was still at a calm level. With Stef at his side, Hando remained composed, relaxed, and was actually seen to smile a few times, even giving Tina his best wishes when she and his brother welcomed him. Surprisingly, even Kim was behaved, and in the company of two lurkers he had been seeing since Christmas. Seeing he was in no steady relationship, the invitation had gone out to him "and guest". On asking John if it would be all right if both ladies attended, the sheriff shrugged and said that was fine. He could not help but wonder if in the end, Hando and Sid would be the least of his behavioral problems at the party.
Promptly at eight-thirty, Derek the maitre d' announced "Ladies and gentlemen, dinner is now served," accompanied by a bell being rung. Everyone separated; tables were sought, the seats indicated by the place cards at the assigned spots, and soon all the guests were settled.
At one table for six, Michelle, Colin, Laura and Maximus waited until Biebe pulled out his companion's chair, then pushed it up for Tina before sitting to her right. They all then sat, and after perusing the menus for a short time, gave the waiters their orders. Afterwards they relaxed, talking amongst themselves, and only pausing when they saw Tina once more dab at her eyes.
"You okay?" Laura asked.
Sniffing, Tina shook her head. "No, not really. I can't get over this," and the others gently laughed.
"Feels like a dream?" Michelle questioned while Colin massaged her bare wrist.
"Yeah, a little. I just don't know how you all kept it quiet without me hearing...something. It's so...perfect," and she reached out to touch one creamy petal in the centerpiece, uncertain any of this was real. "So perfect. I like the way they did this; the pink just sets it off."
"For passion," Biebe softly said near her ear, and she looked at him, smiling.
"I love how the colors symbolize...well, you know." She sighed. "Thanks again -- you don't know how much this means to me."
"Anytime, Sheila -- to make this mate of yours happy," Colin told her.
"We're only happy it has culminated in this, my dear," the general explained. "Seeing the six of us sitting here, knowing what all of us have undergone since we came to this place, you can't imagine how it warms my heart to realize we're all reconciled."
"Hear, hear," said Michelle as Colin added, "Amen to that, mate."
"Well said Max," Laura told him, only patting his shoulder because she did not wish to embarrass him with a kiss.
"Thanks Max," Tina spoke next, and John nodded, smiling. "Yeah, thanks Max. I don't think...Well, I don't think any of us could have said it better. That's one reason why," and he gently caressed the small hand nearest him, "I wanted to make this just a little more than a regular birthday party. I could have done that, I know. Being together with her...with...you," and he directed his next words to Tina. "I'm glad you could get off work; I'm glad you could come to the Nest. I'm..." John swallowed hard. "Tina...I'm glad you found this place." Glancing down at the well-manicured fingers, the nails painted the soft rose hue she preferred, he gave them a kiss. "I'll always be grateful to Max for being your guide." He mouthed a 'Thank you' in the general's direction, and his brother nodded a 'You're welcome'.
"So will I," Tina confessed. "I guess at some point tonight, we'll have to toast a few people: Max, Russell, Ridley Scott...."
"Michael Mann for getting Russell to read the script," Michelle said.
"And the birthday girl," Colin grinned.
Laura nodded. "Can't forget our birthday girl."
"All right mate, you're hosting this party. When do we eat?"
"Colin!" Michelle admonished him, but the Aussie chuckled. "You gobbled those appetizers like they were going out of style."
"Have to keep up my strength Chelle darling. I wish I'd brought a few to the table with us." His companion rolled her eyes as they all laughed.
"Well speaking of eating," Max interrupted, "here it comes and right on time before Colin starts eating the roses."
The entire ballroom filled with 'Ooo's' and 'Ah's' as the white glove service began, and a string quartet started performing appropriate music. For the next ninety minutes, there was only casual conversation interspersed with praise of the food, as this would be a wonderful dining experience. A person could have one item, or a sampling of everything, but Biebe wanted to make certain there was plenty. For the first course there were several choices: pasta in cream with a touch of vodka, and pasta tossed in fresh tomatoes and herbs. A beef broth enhanced with cheese filled tortellini, and a chicken broth combining Asian and Italian cuisine completed the start of the meal. Next, a sorbet made with champagne and citrus juices was brought out to cleanse the palette in anticipation of the next dishes. A salad of various lettuces with the dressing of choice was the second course, and then came the main entrees.
Nearly all the guests could not resist sampling a little of the three chief selections since they all admired Annabella's skills, but most of the men insisted on a larger piece of whatever was available. Prime rib au jus was served to order; the free range chicken breast was caressed in a creamy white wine sauce and lemon butter. The Alaskan salmon was grilled to perfect flakiness, the sauce, herbs and shallots enhancing the flavor. Accompanied by assorted, appropriate vegetables and potatoes prepared in a French style, everyone agreed it was perhaps the finest meal the kitchen had ever produced.
Since no one felt rushed, it was after ten before dinner was concluded. The waiters cleared the table, the DJ took his place again, and at John's insistence, Annabella stepped out of the kitchen to accept the bows and applause of the delirious guests. Alex could be heard to shout, "That's my girl!" which elicited a blush from the chef and a wave of her hand as if to say, "Stop it Alex -- you're embarrassing me." When all had grown somewhat more subdued once more, and before many of them excused themselves to go their appropriate restrooms, Annabella announced that dessert would be served a little later to give them all time to dance off dinner.
"That's the one thing I love about the Nest," Tawny admitted as she stood in front of one of the full length mirrors in the enormous ladies room, smoothing out her outfit.
"What's that?" Liz asked.
"Plenty of women's restrooms. Plenty of stalls. No waiting. I wish whoever designed this place designed all the ladies rooms in the world." The room filled with laughter. "Well, there's no damn line going out the door, and down the hall. Plenty of sinks; plenty of mirrors; plenty of space."
"Yep, God bless 'em," Stef added.
"That's when I knew I'd died and gone to Heaven," Trisha chuckled, her grey evening gown shimmering in the soft lighting.
"Well we tried to make this place with women in mind," Peaches explained, putting her hands under the dryer.
"Well Peaches, I've said it before and I'll say it again," Stef spoke up again. "You definitely did. The rooms, the restrooms -- the men." the last remark earned comments in the affirmative.
"I can't take credit for that," the Nest owner said with a shrug. "*That* is all Russell's doing."
Stef laughed. "God bless him too. Hey, Tina-Lady, I thought I saw you slip in," she greeted as the guest of honor emerged from one of the stalls, straightening her ball gown skirt. The others present also greeted her.
"How you holding up, baby?" NormaJean asked.
"I'm hanging in there," Tina replied, washing her hands. "I'm still in a state of shock though."
"Who can blame you?" Lady said as she and Tawny promised to see everyone back in the ballroom -- they needed to check on Sid. Just as they were heading out the door, Kel rushed in and charged for the nearest, empty stall, only managing a "Be right back" as she streaked by.
"Must have hit her all at once," Michelle joked.
"Yeah, I'd better make sure Hando's doing okay," Stef told them. Bud had promised to keep an eye on Hando, while ironically, Hando promised Trisha he'd try to keep the cop out of trouble. "Trisha, you ready?"
Replacing a small comb in her evening bag, the Englishwoman nodded. "Ready. Tina hon, we'll see you in a bit."
"That Tio is such a teddy bear, Tina-Lady," Stef called to her. "You two are so lucky."
"Thanks Stef, I appreciate it."
Several others hurried in and out, but Tina lingered, adding a little more perfume, reapplying and blotching her rose-colored lipstick.
"Ready?" Laura asked as she and Michelle slowly moved towards the exit, and their friend nodded.
"Waiting for...." She nodded towards where Kel was at, and seconds later, Kel emerged, her petite figure looking quite stunning in black.
"Hey ladies!" she greeted, rushing over to one of the white marble sinks. "Tina, I'm so sorry we haven't had time to talk more, but I just got in this morning."
"I know -- that's what everyone told me."
"And I have to tell you again: Happy Birthday, hon. I know everyone has said this to you already, but you're very lucky...very lucky to be with John."
The evidence technician nodded and smiled, sighing deeply. "I'm just glad you could make it. When I saw you were here, well, I told John during dinner that I was so happy you came back...not just for the party, but because we've all missed you."
Kel bowed her head. "I didn't mean to go away for so long, but...well, there were things I needed to take care of."
Tina nodded. "I understand...The Real World...it can be such a freaking pain sometimes. We've all been there, Kel, but...I'm just glad you're back."
"Ditto, Kel," Laura said, smiling and Michelle added, "Same here, Kel."
"I was just afraid I might have to grovel...."
Michelle looked surprised. "There is no way we would have let you do that anyway. We're just glad to have you back at the Nest where you belong."
"Well I know one thing. If I hadn't returned for your birthday party, Tina...well, John threatened to kick my behind if I didn't make it." They all laughed. "I wasn't about to disobey a request like that. When your John speaks, I take it very seriously especially when it concerns you."
"Kel, I know for a fact John wouldn't have kicked your behind, but I'm glad he threatened you enough to get you back here."
"It was worth it," Kel told her, gently embracing Tina. "It was worth it to see you and John so happy. I've never seen two people belong together as much as you two do."

The four left the restroom area a few minutes later. On returning to the ballroom, they could already hear a song by Vertical Horizon being performed, and several couples were on the dance floor. Rubbing her bare arms -- having left the wrap on the back of the chair at the dining table -- she looked around, finally spotting Biebe standing with Lachlan, Colin and Loria. He smiled when their eyes met, and upon excusing himself, strolled over to where Tina waited.
"You cold, sweetheart?"
"Just a little," she said as he gathered her close, kissing her on the forehead. Tina looked at him, her head cocked to one side, then continued. "I'll warm up in a bit."
"If you don't, just let me know. I'll have them turn up the heat for you."
"I'm sure I'll warm up, but thanks."
He leaned nearer. "Anytime darlin' and remember...I can get you warmer whenever you like."
She blushed slightly. "I know, but it'd be rude if we left our guests and went hiding somewhere."
Letting a finger run along her jawline, he said, "I think they'd understand. Besides, I haven't even given you your birthday gift yet."
"There's more? John...you're embarrassing me. This party's just about the nicest thing anyone could ever give me."
"The night's not over yet, darlin'. Wait and see. Hey, would you like to dance again?"
"I'd like that," she sighed, letting him guide her towards the center of the floor once more. Upon reaching it, they began to slow dance as she rested her head against his chest, smiling contentedly as they moved to the rhythm of 'Someone to Watch Over Me'. "This is so nice," she told the sheriff, easing her arms around his neck as she gazed at him.
Biebe chuckled. "You okay?"
"I'm okay. I just always feel so small when I'm next to you."
"Want me to pull you up onto my shoes?" Tina laughed lightly. "You can dance on top of them."
"No thanks...I'll deal with it. John?"
"Hmm?"
"I know I've told you this before, but thank you so much...for everything."
"You are very welcome, you know that. At least...well, I hope you do." The song was about to conclude, and as it reached the final measures, the Alaskan began to very skillfully end their dance with a gentle flourish. By the time it was over, he had dipped her with one hand supporting her back, an act which earned them applause.
"Did you just see 'Strictly Ballroom' while I was gone?" Tina questioned as he maneuvered her upright once more.
"Should I?"
"It's a nice little Australian movie about ballroom dancing. I just mentioned it because...you are getting so good, John."
"Really?"
"Yeah really. Those lessons Michelle gave you have really paid off."
"Well, she still gives me a few pointers. I can use them, believe me. I'm not Fred Astaire yet."
"Well, I'm not Ginger Rogers, but...we do make a nice couple."
"Yes we do," he said, squeezing her waist a little.
"I'm certain about one thing though," she said as they headed off the dance floor and back towards one of the little groups standing about.
"What's that?"
Indicating he should bend closer, she spoke softly, but loud enough for those in the immediate area to clearly hear her. "I'm going to strangle whichever of you came up with this idea."
The sheriff stood up straight, his eyes wide. "Tina?"
"I don't think Erin's going to be happy with this is she? Or was she in on it too...Jake?"
Barrett stared at her, then broke into a hearty laugh, as did those around them. "You got me little one -- you got me."
It was now the technician's turn to laugh. "Ha...Ha...Ha. Where's John? That bastard."
Lachlan whistled. "Uh-oh. Somebody had better get John and quick. Tell him Tina knows about the little joke."
Colin was grinning worst than a Cheshire Cat. "Let me...He's right over there; wanted to see how this all went." He hurried off.
"You angry with me?" the former bounty hunter questioned, but when he saw the frown on Tina's face turn into a gentle smile, he realized the joke had been all right for the most part.
"Angry? Nah...I like jokes like this, as long as they don't hurt anybody. But I *am* going to kill Mr. John Biebe when I see him."
All of them could see the hesitation in the Alaskan's footsteps as he approached, still uncertain as to how Tina was taking this. She thought she had noticed him off in a nearby corner -- well, at the time, she had believed it Jacob Barrett talking to his partner, Erin. However, once she had taken the dance floor, she had nearly forgotten the pair as her attention focused on the man she thought Biebe. Taking full advantage of the situation, and trying not to feel too embarrassed at being the focus of a practical joke, she stared hard, mouth fixed into an air of disapproval. Tapping one foot, arms crossed, she appeared unhappy enough that a few guests gathered around in anticipation of what might happen.
Kim, especially, seemed thrilled to think that the couple might be about to have a disagreement during this thus far perfect evening. A sneer on his lips, he whispered to one of his dates, "Trouble in paradise it seems."
"Oh Kim," the redhead scolded him. "Why do you have to be that way? They're such a sweet little couple. I always thought John Biebe was cute, and Tina is it? She always looks so nice."
Rolling his eyes, he gave a short laugh. "Our dear ol' Sheriff Pudgy. I don't know what any of you girls see in him. And Tina?" He was about to make a snide comment, considering the Louisvillian hardly ever gave him the time of day, but he paused. The fireworks might be about to begin.
Head bowed, John came within a few steps of his companion, smiling slightly, then it faded. "Tina."
"John."
"We...uh....Hey, don't blame Jake or Erin, darlin'. This was my idea what with everyone always talking about how much the two of us look alike."

Erin went to Jake's side, and Tina was distracted momentarily, thinking how lovely the periwinkle blue of the soft, flowing material made the latest newcomer even prettier. She would have to speak to Erin later; find out how in the world the fabric turned darker at the bottom than it was near the fitted bustier. Sighing, she looked back at the repentent Alaskan. "I wasn't thinking about blaming Jake or Erin, John. I figured this was all your doing. So...what are you going to do about it?"
John swallowed hard. Tina usually took little jokes so well, but being her birthday, perhaps she wasn't in that kind of humorous mood. He had underestimated her reaction. Clearing his throat, he managed, "Uh...Well...What do you want me to say?"
The technician stepped right up to him, her hard stare not wavering. Everyone present held their breaths and watched...as Tina stood tiptoe and kissed her beloved sheriff on the cheek, an action which caused Biebe's face to turn cardinal red. The large group exhaled as they heard her say, "'I love you'. Say...'I love you.'"
He was about to say 'I'm sorry,' when Tina said what she did, so it threw him for a moment. As everyone laughed and clapped, John grinned and lifted her off the floor in a big bear hug. He was more than pleased to repeat, "I love you" as she hugged him back. The tension had vanished.
"I have to know, Tina," Erin began, "how you figured out Jake wasn't John?"
"Yeah little one...What gave me away?"
"It wasn't easy, but I noticed something wasn't right when I stepped up to dance with you. You're just a smidge taller than John; not by a lot, but you are, and I've stood next to him enough to know where I come at on him."
Jake grinned. "Hadn't even realized that. Anything else?"
"You dance like Fred Astaire." Both men almost choked they started laughing so hard.
John nudged her with his elbow. "Hey sweetheart -- I thought you said my dancing had improved."
"It has, love, it has," she said, vigorously rubbing his chest. "You still a bit more work though, but Jake -- he's very smooth on the dance floor."
Erin smiled. "That's what I always tell him."
"You're not mad then?" Biebe asked as they all finally dispersed now that the joke was over.
Tina shook her head, her fingers gently smoothing the thick auburn locks. Instead of being slightly wayward, as he usually wore it, John had slicked it back some so that it had a certain flair to it. "I can't stay mad at you. After all we've been through...I don't like for us to fight. Not if we don't have to anyway."
"It was just a little joke. I'm sorry...."
"You don't have anything to be sorry for. I have a sense of humor -- always have. It was a good joke, but expect for me to get you back someday." John chuckled. "You won't know when or where, but I promise...it will happen."
"I'll be on pins and needles until you do."
"Good. I like a man who's alert." Tina stroked his lapels, gently touching his bowtie. "Have I mentioned how handsome you look tonight?"
The sheriff could barely take his eyes off her. "I think so, but if anyone deserves the compliments tonight, it's you. That gown -- it just does something for you, sweetheart." Forgetting himself momentarily, John briefly nuzzled her neck, the heady scent of 'Good Life' blending with her sweet body chemistry nearly causing him to harden right there. Tina's eyes closed and she moaned softly, a hand drifting to his waist, something which caused him to shift slightly. He needed to get control of himself. Straightening, he continued after clearing his throat, "You're right though. After what we went through a few months back, I don't ever want us to argue like that again. I still can't believe how empty I felt."
"Same here," she said, trying to shake the memory of that time during the summer. "I know we'll have disagreements..."
"Of course we will -- everyone does. But I don't want it to be anything like what we went through. Not ever." His attention was suddenly drawn away as the disc jockey started spinning another selection, and several couples took to the dance floor. "You hear that?"
Tina listened closer. "Our second favorite song."
Almost bashfully, John gave her a gentle kiss on the mouth. "Dance with me, Sunny."
Her eyes nearly filling with tears, she took his hands, but not before whispering, "Teddy Bear" so that only they heard her pet name for him.
Moving a short distance, they joined the others who were dancing to 'This I Promise You', the two becoming lost in the other once more. They did not realize that although they were not alone on the floor, they were still carefully observed. Lachlan would jokingly whisper to someone that Biebe's dancing was much improved, then admit it was nice to see he was no longer lonely. NormaJean happily allowed Mannie to hold her tighter as they swayed to the music, savoring their friends' affection. Jeff Mitchell, Stef and Michelle smiled when they realized they were all dabbing at their eyes.
Maximus -- who preferred these quieter songs to the other 'noise' -- asked Laura to join him. Now they slow danced, as he commented on how good it was to see John finally happy. He recalled coversations he and his brother had shared when they both discussed their emptiness, before either of the women they were now with had entered their lives. The Spaniard did not need to vocalize how deep his and John's pain had been, seeing that both of them had possessed families at one time. Laura admitted that Tina had been so lonely for so long, she was unsure how to take her feelings for John. Like many things in her life, Tina was frightened it would not last.
"I'm only glad of one thing," Maximus confessed, pulling his partner nearer. The Chicagoan was still amazed at how striking the Roman general appeared in his formalwear, the tux appearing to cling to every muscle yet leaving him some comfort.
"What?"
"That I came to my senses, and didn't destroy things here at the Nest."
Laura nearly gasped, but caught herself in time. "Max, why...."
"Because I almost did, and everyone could see that but me, especially John. Much later, once it was all over and I had time to reflect, I understood why John was so afraid of me...screwing up as you say."
Laura nodded. "Yeah, I think I realized it way later too. John was worried that if I left, Tina might too." Maximus agreed. "She wouldn't have -- she came here before I did. I don't think she would have left because of me, but...well, it's incredible how many lives were touched because of us." She sighed. "I'm only glad it worked out in the end."
"They *are* happy, aren't they my dear?"
"Maybe not as much as us," Laura teased, "but yeah, they are." She looked over to where Biebe and Tina shared a conversation while moving in time to the song. The technician's head rested against his chest, the fingers of one hand brushing over the crisp material of his shirt, while the other comfortably stretched upwards behind his neck. John held her close, compensating for their height differences, and only at the conclusion did the sheriff feel capable enough to give his companion a little twirl, ending with a slight dip. This newly acquired dance move earned him some shouts of encouragement and applause as he drew Tina back into an embrace, her smile letting him know he was becoming "smoother".
The ballroom began to feel warmer by the time nearly everyone had danced to 'Oblique is My Love,' and Tina had satisfied the dance card by sharing 'Wang Wang Blues' with Bud, then 'Cheek to Cheek' with Colin. Lachlan was going to dance with her as well, but she held up a hand, while placing another over her heart.
"Could I catch my breath, Lach?"
"Sure thing, love," the pilot told her, grinning broadly as John strolled up. "I think you need a break anyway to get back with your mate here. I don't want my brother to start feeling jealous."
"No chance of that," Biebe told him as the young Aussie gave one of those drop-dead smiles before he eased away. "You tired, darlin'?"
"Uh-uh...just starting to get hot." She fanned herself. "I always get too hot before I get too cold. I'll be okay, but I've been dancing for almost a half-hour, either with you or one of the other Boyz."
"Do you want to step outside for a while -- get some air?"
"That would be a fantastic idea."
"Want me to get that little shawl of yours? Just in case you do get cold." When she nodded, Biebe hurried over to their table, telling a seated Laura and Maximus that he and Tina were going to take a walk in the gardens.
"Don't forget this is her party and yours," the gladiator told him, winking.
"I know. We just want to get some air. We'll be back in a little. Chelle was saying the moonlight gardens look wonderful tonight, so...."
"You don't have to say anymore," Laura smiled. "Spend a little time to yourselves."
"Just don't become too distracted, John...all right? Don't make us have to come looking for you."
Biebe rolled his eyes. "Yes Dad. No
seriously...we'll be back in a while. Just hold down the fort until
we do." He hurried back to Tina' side where she spoke with Jake and
Erin again, easing the Pashmina wrap about her shoulders as she
finished the talk. Excusing themselves, they made their way across
the ballroom floor, stopping briefly to speak with those who asked a
question or made a comment. Eventually, however, the couple exited
through one of the sets of French doors, disappearing into the
gardens.
Part Eight
Looking around the table, seeing Mannie and NJ leave their seats and Sid take Lady's hand and lead her to the dance floor, Brynn looked at her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She wasn't sure if Jeffrey could dance, or would if she asked him so she decided to wait it out. If worse came to worse she could go to the bachelor table, which held Johnny, Arthur, Steve and for the time being Jeff Mitchell, and ask one of them to dance with her.
Just as she was about to get up from her chair, Jeffrey reached over and took her hand. "I think this is the part where we're supposed to mingle," he said getting to his feet and pulling her up to stand beside him. "Let's dance."
Brynn smiled and followed him out to the dance floor. He turned around and faced her, looking a little squeamish about putting his hands on her bare back, but he slowly relaxed to the idea, placing one hand at the small of her back and taking her other hand in his, in the traditional dancing fashion. Slowly they began to move to the music. Brynn looked around to the quickly filling dance floor and watched some of the other couples as they moved. She saw Max holding Laura tightly, Michelle and Colin were dancing as well as talking quietly together. Then she saw the guest of honor, smiling brightly as John swayed her to the music which was apparently one of her favorite selections.
Jeffrey stopped moving, catching Brynn slightly off guard and she looked back at him to see what was wrong. She found him looking over her head and a slow smile began to spread across his face. Looking over her shoulder, she found the source of his distraction and smiled as well. Wendy had made it after all.
Wendy approached the couple, smiling at Jeffrey as she drew nearer. "I heard this was suppose to be some really special occasion," she said as she reached them. "But I had no idea it would be THIS special."
"Wendy," Brynn hugged the other woman as they greeted each other. "I had no idea you were going to be able to make it tonight. How on earth did you find out about all this?"
"Apparently Kelley got John's email up and running because I got a message from him yesterday telling me to drop everything and get my butt up here. This was something I certainly didn't want to miss, so I studied all through last night to make sure nothing would be missed and decided to come here and spend a few days with my favorite man." She gave Jeffrey an affectionate glance as she spoke.
"Well, I'm so glad you could make it." Brynn took a step away from Jeffrey, allowing Wendy to give him a hug and kiss. "I think you two should finish this dance, I'll go bug one of the other guys."
Jeffrey looked at Brynn as she began to walk away. "Thank you," he said.
Smiling Brynn turned around and was headed back to her seat when she was intercepted by Bud White. "Shit," she said trying not to make eye contact. "I really am not in the mood for your verbal assaults right now White, do you mind? This is supposed to be a party where we ALL have fun."
"I'm not here to verbally assault you, I came to see if you'd like to dance with me." Bud said, his voice soft and low, taking Brynn by complete surprise. She dared to glance up at him and meet his eyes.
"Where did this come from? Just six hours ago you were bashing me like there was no tomorrow." Brynn asked, trying to gauge his sincerity.
"I had a bit of an eye opener doll, just dance with me so we can talk." Bud took her hand, leading her back to the dance floor. "I promised Trisha I'd be nice to you tonight, even after what happened today, so here I am being nice."
"Gee, thanks Officer, does this mean you go back to being a jerk tomorrow?"
"Brynn," Bud warned. "This isn't easy for me, so whadaya say you lay off a bit?"
"Sorry," she managed as Bud spun her around to face him so they could begin their dance.
"I have something I need to tell you," he began as they danced slowly. "Cort told Trisha all about what happened earlier today when she got here and I got quite an earful from her. She made things seem a little different for me, kinda turned it around on me. But I wasn't sure about what she'd said about you until I watched you when Wendy came in. You looked happy to see her and I don't think it was because you felt awkward with Jeffrey. Hell I don't think you could be awkward in an insurance seminar in just your underwear."
"Actually, that's my normal attire for an insurance seminar," Brynn said, trying to lighten Bud's tone. He smiled down at her before continuing on.
"Well, you just seemed happy to see her for Jeffrey's sake, the look you gave him before walking away... well it was genuine. I guess I..." He trailed off, leaving Brynn looking up at him, waiting for him to continue. "It's just... Well, it's just... Lachlan had his plane he could show you, and Steve had his picture stuff, you go running with Jeff, and Cort, Max, and East showed you some of the places to ride the horses..." He stopped again, wondering if any of this was making sense to her.
Brynn smiled. "I guess I hit a little bit of a nerve earlier eh, White? In some ways you are jealous of some of the guys here."
"I'm not jealous." Bud stiffened, making Brynn laugh harder. "It's just I wonder what talents I have... I mean if someone like you isn't interested in having me as a friend... It just makes me wonder what I have to offer Trisha. You know?"
Brynn tried to suppress her smile now, knowing herself that she was right about Bud was enough, she didn't need to rub it in. "Bud, I do want to be your friend, and you do have talents... I mean that night I told everyone about Hando, and then sat at the tavern alone most of the night, who was the one that brought me fresh beer when I'd stared the life out of the one in front of me. You make a wonderful beer wench."
Bud looked at her again, not sure if he should be angry or laugh.
"And, you make a wonderful friend. You have a lot to offer Trisha, she's one hell of a lucky lady to have you."
Bud did smile then, this was his version of an apology, and things would be all right between them again, she'd accepted his apology for what it was. Not actually making him say the words as she knew he was loathed to do it .
"So Bud..." Brynn said stepping in a little closer to him. "What do you think about going up to my room now and having a little roll in the hay?"
The shock that crossed Bud's face was more priceless then anything Brynn had ever seen, she silently wished she had a camera. "I... I... I..." Bud couldn't get the words to come out of his mouth, lost in confusion which would have turned to anger had he not seen the glint in Brynn's eye that told him she was up to no good.
"Relax, White, I was just messing with ya." Brynn stepped back into their dance and allowed herself to giggle.
"You really are bad, woman, you know that?"
Part Nine
The strains of the current Aerosmith hit segued to K-Cee and Jo-Jo's latest love song as Tina and John walked into the gardens bordering the ballroom. Pausing long enough to allow him to readjust the shawl when it slipped slightly, Tina closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting the honeyed fragrance of the nearby roses fill her lungs. Shivering both at the sudden chill and John's affectionate touch upon her bare skin, she sighed, eliciting a smile from her lover.
"Better?" he asked, kissing her right collarbone while his hands moved downward to her waist. Even in the moonlight, he could see the straw-colored luminescent powder shimmering against her golden complexion. He massaged her curves, listening to her soft moans as they rocked in time to the duet.
"Better. It was just getting...stuffy, that's all. I hate starting to feel claustrophobic, especially when I'm *not* claustrophobic by nature."
"You needed a break, darlin'...I could tell that. Everybody just wanted to be in the birthday girl's presence."
"Well, the birthday girl wants to spend a little time alone with the man who made all this possible." She turned slightly to look over her shoulder, back at him. "I can't thank you enough for doing all this for me."
"It was my pleasure -- you should realize that by now."
"But like I said, I wasn't expecting a surprise party."
"Made it easier to surprise you then."
"Yeah...but seriously, I wasn't expecting a party, and even if I had been, I had no idea you would organize something so...elaborate."
John nuzzled her right shoulder. "Birthdays only come once a year, darlin'. Besides, I wanted to make it something besides *you* taking everyone out to dinner, then you pay for your own, or everyone else's. Or the whole thing dissolving into another of your family disagreements."
"True. Well, those didn't happen every time, but enough." She still remembered the one time all she wanted to do was go home when her mother and brother got into it. She couldn't even recall why they had argued.
"So you needed a break. If you took the time to come here to spend it with me, this was the least I could do; give you a birthday you'd never forget."
"I appreciate that. You don't know how much this means to me."
"Anytime. Since our Valentine's nearly got ruined, I really threw myself headlong into planning this. I already had something special in mind, but that just made me realize how much I wanted to push this through. And when I asked everyone to go black tie and all...."
"I can just see the look on some of their faces," she giggled, knowing that most of them hated dressing up when they vacationed at the Nest.
"They didn't mind, not once they knew it was for you."
"They did it for you, John. They love you so much."
"They love you too, sweetheart. Besides, it's nice to see everyone here looking so -- I don't know -- like something out of a dream. I'm glad we did this."
Tina sighed, captivated by the lawman's feelings. "So am I." She reached enough to stroke his hair, bending her head to one side so he could trace an imaginary line from her earlobe to down along her arm. The pulsing rhythm of the song increased, and they moved a little, beginning a sort of dance over the smooth pavement, both laughing softly when John gave her a twirl before pulling her back to him. "And...that would be your...Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly imitation?"
"Actually, that was an original John Biebe."
"Ah...Well, I liked it."
"Glad you did."
"And you didn't even make me dizzy."
John chuckled. "That's a relief." Smiling, he leaned forward, capturing first her lower lip and then her entire mouth, his tongue finding its' way into the familiar regions he savored.
Tina reciprocated, her body trembling within his arms, and she immediately noticed when the Alaskan began to harden against her. She pulled back, seeing that her companion was starting to redden, and her eyes drifted downward, noticing the apparent arousal he was attempting to fight. "Down Sheriff Biebe," she teased, and his face went even more maroon in color.
"I...uh...Sorry."
"Well to be honest, you don't know how much you're turning *me* on too."
"I've got a pretty good idea, darlin'," he replied, running the back of one hand over the outline of her cheeks. "Hey, you want to sit for a little -- get off your feet?"
"That is a wonderful idea. I know we sat all through dinner, but I wouldn't mind resting my feet a little. Dancing's almost harder than working a two hour homicide scene."
They moved a short ways from the ballroom
doors, discovering a white marble bench underneath a trellis of
multi-colored climbing roses. Directly in front of it, a small lily
pond sparkled in the artificial lamps and the moonlight, tiny
glittering stars making patterns across the purplish-blue water.
Behind the pond, a fountain upheld by three dancing goddesses emitted
jets of water forming a fleur-d'-lis pattern, and around this were
more roses, more lavender and baby's breath. Tina sat on the bench,
letting the toe of her left shoe draw a line along the concrete edge
of the pool, and Biebe sat beside her. They were silent for a while,
taking it all in, but feeling comfortable enough that words were not
required at the time.
Part Ten
Brynn watched from her seat as John and Tina made their way out of the double doors and into the garden. This evening had been a real hit with everyone, not just the birthday girl, although it was plain to see she wouldn't forget about this for a long time to come. Slowly sipping at her champagne she thought about going back to her room to watch a movie. All of the happy couples on the dance floor and milling about the room were really starting to get on her nerves, not the people themselves, but the fact that they were together. She felt alone. Pushing back her chair, Brynn got to her feet to say goodbye to a few people and head back upstairs.
"Hey, Brynn, leaving so soon?" Brynn spun around to see who was speaking to her. "Please don't leave me all by my lonesome."
"Steve," she said, walking closer to him. "Enjoying the party?"
"I am now. I see the good doctor's lady is now here, so that would leave you dateless," Steve said taking her hand and leading her to the dance floor. "I have to tell you, you look great in this dress."
"Thanks, you're not looking half-bad yourself," Brynn replied, letting the music and the company sooth her for the first time all night.

They danced together close and slow, talking and laughing. They had already begun their friendship a few days earlier, so it seemed natural for them to fall back into the banter of camaraderie as soon as they stood together.
"Why were you going to leave?" Steve asked, holding her close.
"I was just getting tired of all the 'happy couples' it really made me feel a little lonesome" she told him honestly. "I know it sounds pathetic, but I was going to go back up stairs, change out of this dress and feel sorry for myself for a few hours before falling asleep on the couch or something." Brynn replied, straight to the point.
"We can't have that." Steve said. "If you are going back to your room, I will be the one escorting you, you're not going alone."
"Gee thanks," Brynn managed a smile for him, but he could tell it was half hearted.
"Just stay with me for a little while here and see how you feel now that you have the proper company. Okay? Besides, you still owe me a movie date, so I refuse to let you go back to your room and watch movies alone."
Brynn smiled for real this time. "That's right! I do owe you a movie date. Things have just been so hectic here...."
"I know and I understand but I saw my chance finally arrive when you were done talking with Bud, so I took it. Things have been rough since your break-up with Lachlan. I heard all about your evening with Sid, although it seems to be mostly speculation. And I heard about the fight with Bud this afternoon."
"Nothing goes unnoticed around here does it?" Brynn asked, peering up at him through the thick layer of bangs that covered her forehead.
"You ought to know better than that by now," Steve replied. "But lets not talk about that... instead let's talk about... dinner tomorrow night, in my room. We'll do the dinner and a movie thing and hang out and talk."
"Are you asking me on a date, Steve?" Brynn asked coyly, knowing she would accept his offer.
"Yeah." Steve spoke confidently. "I'm asking you on a date." He gave her a winning smile. "Will you please come to my room tomorrow night to have dinner with me?"
"Yes, I'd be honored." Steve gave her a mock bow as the music finished, making her giggle. A split second later her giggle turned to fear as she heard an ear splitting scream.
Part Eleven
"What the hell was that?" Bud asked looking around the room. Brynn watched the other guys search the room as well. In an instant she knew what they were looking for. Almost all of the boyz present were trying to locate Sid to see what he'd done to make some one scream the way they had.
Sid was in a far corner, talking with Lady before hearing the scream. Now he too looked around the room and noticed all eyes were on him. "I didn't so it," he said raising his hands to show them he'd done nothing wrong. He was just as shocked as everyone else present.
"It sounded as if it came from the gardens," Kath said approaching the door and trying to shake East from holding her back.
Maximus headed for the double doors that lead out into the gardens before Laura could even get the word from her mouth. "My God, Tina's out there with John." In a rush everyone was standing in front of the doors with Max in the lead, trying to keep everyone back until he could find out if it were safe. Opening the French doors, he walked out onto the stone walkway looking from side to side. Letting his eyes adjust to the dim light, he squinted and saw John and Tina near one of the stone benches that were scattered throughout the garden.
Everyone else poured out of the grand ballroom in a frenzied rush. Following Max's gaze they saw Tina and John. It looked like Tina was crying, holding a hand over her mouth and visibly shaking uncontrollably.
Part Twelve
The general was the first to speak. "John?!" he asked, obviously concerned, and trying to shout above the din of conversation from the others. His brother looked over at him, suddenly realizing that he and his companion were not alone.
"Tina?" Laura questioned, about to move forward to comfort her friend, but Biebe raised his hand, silently telling her she should stay put for the time being. "John, what's wrong with her?"
"John what happened? We heard a scream," Maximus continued.
John shook his head, holding onto Tina as she continued to cry on him, her sobs nearly increasing, her arms thrown around his neck while she continued to nod, speechless. "She...Sorry."
"Sorry? Do we need to start looking for somebody?" Bud demanded, his eyes searching the area for trouble. "Shit John, what the hell happened out here? Did you and Tina...."
Now it was the gladiator's turn to raise several fingers, an indication that everyone should calm down. He had been watching both the Alaskan and the technician the whole time, how at ease his brother remained despite Tina's distress. "John?"
This time, Biebe gave a sheepish smile and shrugging, started to speak....
They moved a short ways from the ballroom doors, discovering a white marble bench underneath a trellis of multi-colored climbing roses. Directly in front of it, a small lily pond sparkled in the artificial lamps and the moonlight, tiny glittering stars making patterns across the purplish-blue water. Behind the pond, a fountain upheld by three dancing goddesses emitted jets of water forming a fleur-de-lys pattern, and around this were more roses, more lavender and baby's breath. Tina sat on the bench, letting the toe of her left shoe draw a line along the concrete edge of the pool, and Biebe sat beside her. They were silent for a while, taking it all in, but feeling comfortable enough that words were not required at the time.
After a few moments, the quiet was broken when John announced, "So?"
Tina smiled shyly, looking at her companion through upraised eyes. "So."
/Well that was great, John Michael// the sheriff considered, kicking at a pebble. /Of course she's expecting you to say more...Look at her. I just love her freckles, and how wide her eyes are. You know what? They don't look as sad as they did when she first came here. Hell, they don't look sad at all, do they? There used to be so much she tried to keep hidden -- I'm glad she doesn't, not anymore// He listened as several birds stirred in a nearby tree, then the notes from Mandy Moore's 'I Wanna Be With You' began to play, catching his attention. John clasped his hands in his lap, then cleared his throat. Very softly he sang: '...Your breath on my face Your warm gentle kiss, I taste the truth I taste the truth We know what I came here for So I won't ask for more. I wanna be with you If only for a night To be the one whose in your arms who holds you tight. I wanna be with you There's nothing more to say There's nothing else I want more than to feel this way.'
"I remember the first time I heard you sing that song," Tina said thoughtfully, a warm flush coursing through her body at the sound of his voice.
"Yeah? When was that?"
"The night we had dinner together. We went up to my apartment...."
"Oh that's right. You were fixing the coffee to go with our dessert, and I was in front of your stereo system looking for some listening music. I was singing this?"
She nodded. "You were singing this."
"I don't....Well, I sort of remember...." Shrugging, he continued. "How was I?"
Tina giggled. "Better than your dancing."
John rolled his eyes as he broke out laughing. "Thanks a lot."
"No, no really...you have a wonderful voice. I've noticed that all of you guys love to sing."
"I think we have the Creator to thank for that."
"Well, you sort of sound like him, but you have your own style, John. You always have." She laid a hand over his clasped ones. "I have to admit, every time I hear you sing our song to us," and she closed her eyes as she imagined the setting, "I just want to crawl in a nice, soft, warm bed with you, surrounded by candlelight...the room filled...."
"With white roses and lavender?" She nodded, looking at him once more before resting on his shoulder. "I'd like that too. Makes me real eager to get up to your suite later tonight." They both laughed. "You're having a good time?"
"The best. Honestly John, and I'll repeat it, this is the best birthday I've ever had in my whole life. There hasn't been another one to come close. Thank you again."
"You're very welcome, sweetheart. I couldn't have done anything less for you, not this year. You've made the last nine months pretty special for me too, in case you didn't realize that." He looked down to see her smiling, and he felt his chest go heavy. There were so many things he longed to tell her, and he wondered if he would be able to properly do it. "You're the prettiest woman I've ever taken to a party."
She sighed. "Donna was pretty."
John paused, nodding. "Donna was pretty, but Donna wasn't you, Tina. And that was my old life. I'll...I'll never forget her or my boys, or what they mean to me, but you're here with me now, and that's what matters. I don't know if I can ever show you exactly how much you mean to me."
"Oh John," she whispered, raising up and touching his beard. Giving him a quick kiss, she added, "You are so wonderful to me."
"Soul-mates, remember?" It was not so much a question as it was a statement of fact.
"Soul-mates." There was a momentary silence again, then she giggled timidly.
"What's wrong?"
"I...Do...Well, do you mind if I...." Tina hesitated.
"Do I mind if you what?" John asked, raising his eyebrows, a twinkle in his blue-green eyes.
"Well, you mentioned that you had a gift for me...."
John chuckled deeply, playfully glancing at his wristwatch. "You know what? The twenty-seventh's going to be over in about fifteen minutes, and I haven't given you your gift yet."
"I hate sounding selfish...."
"Hell no, you're not being selfish. I should have thought of it earlier. In fact," and he started fumbling in an inner jacket pocket, "I think now would be the perfect time to give this to you." He withdrew a small box wrapped in white paper and encircled by a gold ribbon. Smiling gently, the sheriff handed it to her, saying "Happy Birthday, Tina" as he did.
She enthusiastically accepted it, giving it the proverbial shake. "Oh John -- thank you. Thank you. You know how much I love earrings."
Biebe nodded, watching as she removed the wrapping. She looked like an eager child on Christmas morning, but that made him happy. He had sensed from some of her conversations that with her birthday coming only two months after the Holidays, that was an excuse for some people to neglect her own special day. His attention returned to her. "Yeah I do, but it's not earrings, darlin'."
"It's not?" Puzzled, she looked up from the silver cloth box. Since piercing her ears eighteen years before, there was nothing she appreciated more than a new pair of earrings. "Then...."
"I know it's not earrings, but I'm hoping you'll like this just as much."
Perhaps it was a gold chain or a locket. John knew how much she loved simple pieces like that. "I'm sure I will," she answered, flipping back the hinged top and holding her breath. "You always...."
The air filled with a sudden scream which caused the Alaskan to jump slightly, although he thought himself prepared for any reaction. The noise reverberated through the gardens, followed by another almost hysterical scream as Tina sprang from the bench, throwing her trembling hands over her mouth. Shuddering uncontrollably, tears flowing down her face, she said nothing as John gathered her in his arms, gently rocking her.
Using one finger to life her chin, he tenderly ran his lips over hers, tasting the salt of her tears merging with the sweet taste of her mouth. Smiling, gazing deep into wide eyes the color of chocolate, John swallowed and quietly asked, "Tina...marry me."
Tina gasped, the tears spilled anew, and she smiled, shaking her head, laughing as she did. Sobs throbbing in her chest, she threw her arms around John's neck, clutching him for dear life as she nodded over and over.
Part Thirteen
No one moved; everyone was so silent only crickets could be heard, interspersed with Tina's quiet weeping. Her face was still buried against her companion's chest.
"So that's it," John was saying as she finished telling the story. "That's when all of you ran out here."
More stunned silence. Finally, it was for Bud White to impatiently ask, "And?"
John appeared surprised. "And? And what?"
"And what?!" Bud's eyebrows practically shot into his crew-cut as he put his hands on his hips. "You bring us to this point Biebe and then leave us hanging?!"
"I didn't...."
It was Steve's turn now. "Yeah John -- hell of a time to pull a cliffhanger."
The Alaskan heaved a deep sigh. "What exactly do you...."
"Spill it, Biebe," Bud tried to demand, a grin pulling at his mouth, and Trisha pinched his arm. "Ow! Shit, doll."
"Yeah Tio, tell us," Stef called out, shoving her way between Colin and Jeffrey Wigand.
"Come on John." "I can't believe you ended it there." "Tell us." "What did you say Tina?" "That's right -- she hasn't told us." "Well John?" "Hell, I don't think we're gonna find out, mate." "John please tell us." "Tina hon, what did you say?" "Tina?" "Maybe we should leave them alone." "If you all would shut up a minute..." "Who are you telling to shut up?" "Geez, you're scaring both of them." "I *knew* John was up to something." "I just want to hear an answer before I grow roots in this spot."
The murmur increased until at last Bud stepped forward, placed a finger between his lips, and whistled for silence. "Thank you!" Everyone obeyed, and he turned to face the couple. "And?" he repeated.
Now both Tina and John were staring at the large group, disbelieving that this private moment had suddenly become so public. They all meant well, but seeing all those smiles, wagging eyebrows and expressions that read 'Oh tell me now or I'm gonna keel over' was enough to make them both run screaming to the hotel. Looking up at the sheriff, her eyes reflecting her nervousness, Tina saw him gathering strength to deliver the news. Biebe glanced at her, gently kissed the top of her head, then turned back to the curious faces. Inhaling, he finally announced: "I asked Tina to marry me."
There were gasps, but the only other response was when Bud White mumbled, "You told us that John. You said 'Tina...marry me.' But there's got to be more you two."
Laura held the general's arm tighter, her heart beating faster as she eagerly watched Tina for a response. Her best friend tried to find words, but none would come, but she held John a little closer, a mute indication that she wanted him to answer. With that, smiling, John's eyes refocused on the assembly as he said, "She said yes."
"Oh God!" NormaJean softly exclaimed, and Mannie placed an arm around her.
A shocked Bud shook his head, picking his mouth up off the floor. "I...Hey, I want to hear Tina tell us that, John. I want to hear it from her mouth, bub." Everyone laughed, and the cop looked at Tina and the tears glistening in her eyes. He remembered when he'd first seen her so long ago, staring down Sid at the Tavern, her demeanor full of gumption and shyness. He respected her so much, and although he knew 'L.A. Confidential' had given her the first real introduction to the Creator, theirs was only a mutual friendship. He had always hoped she'd find love in this place. "Tina...honey...This big lug says he asked you to marry him. I want the answer from you, not him. What did ya tell him?"
Tina looked again at her beloved Alaskan, then back to White. Smiling she softly answered, voice choked with emotion, "I said yes, Wendell...I told him yes."
Part Fourteen
Michelle shrieked, then Kel, Trisha, Laura, NormaJean and Kath in almost simultaneous order. The other women emitted shouts of delight as well, before everyone started talking at once, rushing towards the unsuspecting couple. Young Johnny and Arthur gave a "high five"; Andy picked up Jennifer and swirled her about. Jeff Mitchell was so delirious, he jumped in the air, clapping his hands and screaming, "Yes!" as he did before he and Rick embraced. Hando excused himself from Stef -- he had one small matter to handle. Rushing into the ballroom, he located one of the Nest's regular waiters, and asked him to spread the word. He then hurried back to Stef's side, almost afraid he would miss something.
By now, John and Tina were surrounded to accept the delighted wishes of his brothers and all their friends. She was drawn partially aside to be kissed, hugged, and fawned upon, her joy apparent as they all cried and laughed together.
East slapped Biebe's wide back, chuckling as he did. "Son of a bitch," he joked. "You son of a bitch!" He gave his brother a big hug.
"Driscoll's right." Bud was shaking his head in disbelief. "John...when the hell did you decide this?"
"Back before New Year's, didn't you mate?" Colin interrupted. "You hinted something to me when...."
"Yeah, and thanks for not saying anything pal -- I appreciate it."
"No problem -- anything for you and your Sheila. Although..." It was now the mechanic's turn to embrace Biebe, "...I don't know what she sees in you, you lucky bastard."
John smiled broadly. "I don't know either. I'm just glad she said yes."
"Or you would have been pretty embarrassed," Colin continued, grinning. "Shit John...you're a freaking lucky bastard!"
Jeff Mitchell stepped up next, smiling so much his face felt as if it would break. "John...I don't know what to say. Congrats to you and Tina Renee."
"Thanks Jeff."
"Same from me, too, John," Rick added. "Congratulations."
"Yes, congratulations John," Corbett called over, the incarnation from 'Prisoners of the Sun' feeling quite happy for his sibling.
Ilaria hugged Tina again. "I am so happy for you, my friend. Massimo and I...we can only wish you and John the best."
Tina still had an overwhelmed gaze on her face, as if none of this was quite real yet. "Thank you, Ilaria."
"John has been at the Nest long enough," Ilaria continued, "the two of you should consider some place in the Real World for your honeymoon. Italy would be quite nice. John could stay away *that* long, and it would be so romantic."
"Uh-uh-uh," Kath said. "Not unless they stop in Wales first. You know how much Tina loves Wales, right girlfriend, with the Tudor connections. Wales is very romantic."
"Well Yorkshire is too, and she adores Yorkshire --" Trisha added, "-- with the Brontes and all."
"Scotland's wonderful," Lady chimed in. "You should consider it too."
"John has roots in Vancouver," Michelle laughingly said, adding her two cents' worth.
Stef was jumping up and down. "Have you set a date, Tina-lady?"
The women giggled, and Tina -- trying not to cry again -- shook her head. It was for NormaJean to interject, "Stef -- they just got engaged....But seriously baby, have you two set a date?" They all laughed again.
"How could they set a date," Loria explained, "when Tina was screaming like a banshee out here?"
The newly engaged woman blushed, bowing her head. "Sorry about that guys. I was just so shocked when it happened, I...I...I didn't know what to think."
Everyone told her it was all right, and Loria now hugged Tina herself. "John's very lucky, and you, you are one lucky lady. John's a wonderful man."
"Absolutely," a chorus of voices agreed.
Meanwhile, Lachlan struck Biebe on the back. "Don't know what to say, John. You're a lucky mate."
"Yes I am, Lach -- thanks."
"Lucky, lucky bastard," Colin repeated.

Hando came around on John's opposite side, not wanting to incite Curry. He doubted they would argue on this special evening, but no need pushing things. "John...congratulations to you and your Sheila. I...I...hope you two will be happy together." He would have liked to have said more, but afraid he might ruin the moment, quit.
The sheriff, seeing the younger man's hesitancy, smiled in return. "Thanks Hando. You don't know what that means to me."
It was finally Maximus' turn to approach. The two did not speak at first, but their thoughts were obvious to each other. Biebe had been the very first brother to introduce himself and greet the general upon his arrival at the Nest. John had taken the responsibility of being his guide and mentor in this new world, and yes, attempted to talk some sense into him during his troubles with Laura. The men had a connection on a level they did not with the others, and now, as Max gave John a brotherly hug, he recognized at that moment just how much he cared for this man.
"John...I can only add to what the others have said. You have nothing but my best wishes. No one deserves this more, and Tina...." He paused, sighing, as he recalled just what she had meant to him. "You had best take care of her, or you'll have me to answer to. I *will* unleash hell on you if you ever cause her harm."
John smiled. "I'll always take good care of her Max. I wouldn't have asked her something this important if I didn't want our relationship to go further." Bending his head closer to the general's ear so only he could hear, the Alaskan whispered, "I love her more than you could ever know."
Max patted his shoulder. "I know you do, John. I know you do."
Zack was shaking his head, perplexed, as Kelly returned to his side after wishing Tina the best. She looked at him and asked, "I know I'm going to be sorry I asked you this but why are you looking like that?"
"What the hell is John thinking? Doesn't he realize almost every woman here is going to want us to.... Ow! Why did you step on my foot again?!" Glaring, Kelly growled a few words of Klingonese at him. Zack's knowledge of the 'Star Trek' language was weak, but he had a feeling she wasn't telling him she wanted something else to drink. Or maybe she was, but he decided not to push it. "Okay, okay...not another word, woman. Just promise you won't...."
"I won't if you'll swear to quit running your mouth," Bugdog said, smiling her sweetest. When Zack shrugged and chuckled, knowing he was defeated in this argument at least, he got a brief kiss on the cheek. "Not every woman here *is* going to want something like this, but for John and Tina..." She sighed. "...it's perfect."
Laura was sharing a quiet moment with her dearest friend, allowing Tina to cry on her shoulder while others -- both amongst the brothers and her female friends -- still came up to offer their best. "You had no idea?" the Chicagoan asked.
"None, none at all. I thought he was giving me a gold necklace or earrings or something. I wouldn't have dreamt this at all....You mean, he didn't even tell you and...."
"Max and I didn't know a thing, girlfriend. Well, I know I didn't and from the look on Max's face, I don't think he did either. I think John threw us all for a loop."
Kel finally had her turn to embrace her fellow Southerner. "Tina, Tina, Tina. What are we going to do with you?" They all laughed again, and she continued. "No one deserves this more." She could see tears sparkling in the girl's eyes, and this only made Kel and a few others wipe away their own. "T...Lord girl, when do we get to see your ring?" Excited voices agreed with Kel's question.
Tina appeared stunned at first, and then the realization hit her. "My ring? My ring." She prepared to hold out her left hand, then suddenly realized something. "My ring!" Startled she looked over at where John and Maximus still conversed. "John...where's my ring?!"
Everyone at once began to look around on the ground. It was not long before Biebe noticed Tina's Pashmina shawl on the ground next to the bench, and the corner of a silver box peeped from under it. "Found it, darlin'! I don't think you ever got it out of the box!" Laughter filled the air, and blushing and somewhat embarrassed, Tina approached him as the sheriff picked up the wrap and the box. "Besides...you didn't even let me finish what I'd intended to do."
"Really?" Her cheeks grew even more rosy. "I'm sorry -- it's just...."
"No, don't apologize. We can do this later."
"You'll do it now, mate!" Colin hollered, and everyone agreed.
Sighing, rubbing his eyes, John indicated that Tina should take a seat on the bench again. Once she had, the assembled grew silent, watching intently as the sheriff removed the ring from its' container. Gathering his nerve for the umpteenth time that evening, especially now that he had an audience, he blotted all of them out of his mind, except for the lovely lady sitting before him. With the greatest ease, John dropped down to one knee, an action which caused a great number of the group to sharply draw breath.
It took a moment, but eventually John took both of Tina's quivering hands and gazing gently at her said very clearly, "Tina...will you marry me?"
Not missing a beat, the tears flowing again, she replied, "Yes. Yes John, I'll marry you."
The screams and applause were renewed as the couple tightly embraced, and again, found themselves surrounded. Everyone wanted to see the ring as soon as it was on her finger, and with a mixture of pride and shyness, Tina held out her left hand. "To be honest, I haven't looked at it that good myself," she admitted. "I must have dropped the box when I screamed. I think that's when I went blank."
"Oh Lord...she hasn't even looked at her own ring yet," Stef exclaimed. "Okay Tina-lady...show it to us! Let's see what Tio came up with!"
The large group took turns getting a quick look at what now graced the third finger of Tina's left hand. Set in a wide, white gold band, the one carat, marquise cut center diamond of icy winter white color was enhanced by a total of twelve round shaped stones. The smaller sidestones -- six on either side of the center -- were set in rows of three, giving the ring a pronounced elegance. Everyone wanted to see, even Hando and Sid, the latter of whom, on moving aside with Lady, pronounced it a most perfect diamond, encompassing the best of what the 4 C's (cut, clarity, color and carats) meant.

"Isn't that about the most beautiful thing you've ever seen?" Kel sighed, then started indicating with one hand that she needed a tissue. Tears were already in her eyes, and she was sniffing hard, obviously overcome with the emotion of the moment. She embraced Tina again. "You are so lucky. You are so, so lucky T."
Tina could not help but notice that her friend shot a look at the devastatingly handsome Bastian -- who was her escort to the party -- but it was hard to read what it meant. "To think...I almost didn't come and I would have missed....Well, all of this." She moved quickly to John and reaching up, gave him a tight hug too. "You big teddy bear," she whispered, enjoying it when he started to redden.
"Thanks Kel. I appreciate it." John cocked his head to one side, even as he eyed Bastian. He was still uncertain what to think of that one. He had barely figured the blonde guy out before he left, but this Bastian person was even odder, something which bothered John's cop instincts. He turned his attention back to the petite woman in front of him. "You okay, darlin'? You look a little pale."
"I...just haven't felt that good tonight."
"Oh Kel," Tina began, "you shouldn't have come if you weren't feeling well."
"Oh, I'm glad I did. The sheriff here would have come looking for me -- probably sent the posse after me and everything," she joked. "No really, I'll be okay. I..." She started crying again. "I wouldn't have missed this for the world. John...you take good care of her, you hear me?"
"You know I will. Just promise me..." and his voice dropped, "the next time you take Tina to the movies and dinner, that's *all* the two of you will do." The two women looked at each other and laughed, a reaction which left some of those standing nearby to wonder what the inside joke was.
"John," Kel admitted, "you never know *what* might happen when I'm involved."
"True, but promise me you won't let anything happen to Tina." Kel looked completely serious as she patted the sheriff's hand.
"I promise. Do you think I'd ruin something as beautiful as what you two have? Just...Just promise you'll be good to one another."
After another embrace, Kel returned to Bastian's side, seeing a look on his face which either meant he found her entire exchange humorous, or he was bored by this birthday party now turning into an impromptu engagement party. Crossing her arms, she asked, "What?"
He simply shrugged, a smirk on his lips. "Oh shut the fuck up, Bastard!"
"Didn't say a thing, Beast."
"You were about to. Inside before you make an even bigger ass of yourself and John has to kill you. Which wouldn't be a bad idea, but then Tina would have to help him get rid of the body, and that's no way to start a marriage. Inside -- NOW!"
Bastian only chuckled and followed her inside.
Annabella and Alex were last to see the ring, and it was then the chef invited everyone back into the ballroom. If it was all right with Tina, now would be the ideal time to serve the desserts, cut the birthday cake, and break open the Don Perignon, perhaps for a toast. The guests were all in agreement, and the flow of happy well-wishers moved towards the glass doors.
John and Tina were near the forefront, an arm around her waist as he softly spoke to her. They were nearly back inside, just stepping onto the raised patio area, when they were surprised to find Sid 6.7 jumping before them. Immediately, Maximus and Bud flanked the couple, everyone stopping to see what was happening. The sheriff held Tina protectively, both obviously surprised.
"Etienne mon cher; John," Sid greeted.
"Sid!" Max and Bud said nearly at once, and John -- shaking his head and wearing a 'This is all I need' expression -- spoke. "Sid -- can we help you?" he asked, his calm deceptive.
"Well..." The cyber-psycho paused, glancing over at Lady, then back to his brother and...hmm, would this make the Louisvillian his prospective sister-in-law? "Well, I only wanted to wish you and Etienne the best of everything in your engagement."
"You do?" Tina could not help asking, shocked.
Sid nodded, knowing he had surprised them all. "I...Yes, yes, I wish you and John only the best." He saw everyone's skepticism, but was not fazed. "I simply wanted to tell both of you that. You have brightened the Nest since your arrival, Etienne, and we have all been the better for having you here. I know the sheriff has won your heart and...." He paused, directing the next words to his sibling. "...and John...I realize she has obviously won yours. Otherwise, neither of you would have managed to make it this far in your relationship." He watched the couple exchange glances, looking as if they believed themselves in the Twilight Zone. "Well, that's all I had to say. Congratulations John -- Etienne."
John blinked, willing himself back to Earth. "Uh...thanks Sid. I appreciate it...We both do."
"Yeah, we do, Sid -- thank you."
Bowing his head, Sid stepped away and rejoined Lady, who gave him a peck and a pat on his chest. Left behind were a very stunned Alaskan and evidence technician, both of whom tried not to stare too hard as they comprehended what had just occurred.
"Would you pinch me?" Biebe asked.
"Not before you pinch me first," Tina confessed, looking over at her new fiancé. "John...what just happened?"
"I think Sid just offered us his best on our engagement."
"Uh-huh...So we're both having the same dream then?"
"Yep. Not only that..." He pretended to shiver. "...but I think hell just froze over." Tina laughed softly causing John to smile as he took her hand, leading her off a short distance while the others filtered into ballroom. "I love to hear you laugh. It's never the same, darlin'...I'm never sure what to expect when I hear it, whether it'll be nice and hearty, or...flirtatious." A blush began to creep into her cheeks. "It's like your smiles...You...I don't see those sad smiles anymore like you had when you first came here."
"I don't have sad smiles anymore because you've made a difference, John Michael Biebe. I can't be unhappy when I'm with you."
"Even when...." He started to say more, but Tina eased an index finger against his mouth.
"Shh...Not another word about that. We're together now. I'm not going anywhere...And remember something."
"What?" He could see the twinkle in her eyes.
"Whenever I smile...it'll always be for you."
John placed his forehead against Tina's, sighing as he did....
Part Fifteen
Steve grasped Brynn's hand as they turned to go back into the ballroom. The excitement of the night and John and Tina's announcement of their engagement was making the mood of the evening turn in a direction Brynn wasn't sure she was ready to go in yet. She adored Steve and their friendship, but when she looked down to where he'd taken her hand in his, a feeling of anxiety coursed through her. Not even realizing it, she'd stopped walking and was staring at their intertwined fingers.
"Are you okay?" Steve asked, stopping to examine her face.
Brynn looked up, brought back to herself by Steve's voice. "Yeah, I'm fine. I just ... I think I'll go talk to Tina for a few minutes before they go back inside. Why don't you go ahead and wait for me."
"Sure," he replied. Looking at her, puzzled. "I'll wait for you at the table."
Brynn gave him a smile and retracted her hand from his. She turned away and headed back over the bridge where a few people were still standing, congratulating John and Tina. After the crowd had dispersed and headed back to the ball room, Brynn approached them.
"Congrats you two," she said, wrapping her arms around Tina for a hug before going to John and planting a kiss on his cheek. "This was certainly a surprise."
Tina nodded her agreement, glancing sidelong at John.
"Well you guys better get back inside. The night I still young and there is still so much do to!"
"We'll be in, in a few minutes," John told her. "I want to spend some time with my lady first."
Before Brynn turned away to head back inside herself, Tina took her arm. "Brynn, before you go, I'd like to say something."
"Go ahead," Brynn said, looking a little more than confused.
"I know I wasn't the most accepting person when you made your disclosure about Hando and I'm sorry," Tina began. "I just want you to know that even though I don't understand, I really do respect your decision. You did what was right for you and you stood up for what you believe. I respect that in a person."
"Thanks T," Brynn said, close to tears. "That means a lot to me. Well, I have Steve inside waiting for me, I guess I better high tail it."
Walking to the door, Sid passed by her and she waited just with in earshot, silently hoping he would behave himself. John wasn't one of Sid's most beloved friends and on this of all nights, he would most likely put in a few cruel words to bring the mood down a notch or two. But what she heard him say both shocked and enlightened her. Maybe her time with him last night had been a turning point after all.
Part Sixteen
Going back through the French doors into the grand ballroom, her skirts saying from side to side almost in rhythm with the music that still played, Brynn found Steve sitting in a seat at the table. She lifted her hand to get his attention then signaled for him to join her at the refreshment table. The waiters and waitresses had laid out several beverages on a long table to one side of the room. They had their choice, everything from bottled water to expensive champagnes and wines. Being the total RC girl that she was, Brynn opted for a bottle of imported beer and no glass. She was a home town girl with no need for fanciness. On occasions like this, she would put on a pretty dress and act like a lady, but there were just simple things for show that she didn't care to take part in. Not that she would grab the bottle of champagne and chug it, she had a little more class than that. But she would rather keep things simple, it was more comfortable for her that way.
"A girl after my own heart," Steve said as he approached her. "I like a woman who knows how to drink a good beer."
Brynn smiled at him after taking a drink of her beer and raised the bottle slightly in agreement. "So," she began. "What do you make of all this?" She waved her hand around the room.
"I think it's perfect... for John and Tina. Why what's your idea of a perfect birthday celebration?" Steve asked grabbing a beer of his own before taking Brynn's hand and leading her back to the table.
"Well," Brynn began. "I think at least once in their life time everyone should be treated to something like this, but the rest of the time... My idea of a perfect celebration would be a few good friends, some pizza and wings, maybe a trip to the local dance club. Something really simple, but fun."
"The more time I spend with you, the more I like you." Steve pulled out her chair and then took a seat beside her, moving a little closer to be heard over the music and laughter in the room. "I think you and I should spend a little more time together."
Brynn looked at him, the shock apparent in her features. It hadn't been long since her break with Lachlan. She didn't know if she was ready for this again so soon. "I.. I don't know Steve. I think ..."
"That's your first problem right there," he interrupted before taking a drink of his beer. "You think too much, you outta let yourself just feel for a change. Do you think I thought about telling you I think we should spend more time together? I said it because it felt right. Look, Brynn, I'm not gonna push you right back into another relationship so soon after Lachlan. I know these things take time. I want to spend more time with you because, it feels right. I like you, a lot. So why not give our friendship what it needs to develop. I think you and I have a lot in common."
Brynn stared at him, completely unable to speak. His ability to say exactly what she needed to hear when she needed to hear it was uncanny. "I like you too Steve," she managed to say after a second or two. "And I agree that we need to explore our friendship. I just don't want to take things too fast again. I think that was my problem with Lachlan. We moved way too fast."
"Well then, we'll take it slow and see where we end up."
She grinned at him and nodded.
Hearing the music begin, Steve got up from the chair and put his beer aside. Reaching a hand out to Brynn he helped her to her feet as well. "I want to dance with you. This song reminds me of you. I'm not really sure why."
"I love Enigma," she replied, letting him lead her to the floor where other couples were already dancing again.
"Do me a favor?" Steve asked, taking her in his arms. "Just close your eyes and feel, don't think... feel."
Brynn did as he asked, closing her eyes and listening to the music in it's slow, hypnotic rhythm. Then once the words began, she held her eyes shut and moved with Steve, listening and feeling.
When the music finally stopped Brynn opened her eyes and looked at Steve. He'd been watching her intently for any reactions and now as she looked at him, he got one. Her smile began slowly, but quickly spread to light up her entire face. "I think I know why that song reminds you of me. I also think that for only knowing each other a short time you know me entirely too well."
"Why's that?" Steve asked, trying to be nonchalant.
"Well that is one of my favorite songs of all time, because it describes me. How I feel from time to time. And you know something? I had a conversation in the tavern a few night ago about it."
Steve shuffled his feet and looked at the ground. "Ok, I'll admit it. I heard you talking to NJ about it, so I requested it for you."
"I thought so," Brynn reached her hand up and pinched his cheek. "That was so sweet of you."
Steve batted her hand away with a sly smile. "Which part, eavesdropping on you and NJ or requesting the song?"
Brynn laughed and pulled him back to their seats. "I think the festivities are going to start back up here pretty quick. I just say the betrothed couple come back in."
Part Seventeen
After five minutes alone together, the couple finally made an entrance into the ballroom. By the time they did, everything had been set up for what was to come next. The waiters were already uncorking the bottles of Dom Perignon, and Annabella's assistants had arranged the large dessert table containing key lime pies, crystal glasses of chocolate mousse, and lemon meringue pies. Small plates with chocolate truffles and strawberries dipped in both white and dark chocolate were in abundance. The centerpiece of the table, however, was a beautiful two-tier cake, draped in a white cream frosting and decorated in pastel rosebuds and full roses.
"We thought..." Colin told them as Tina and John moved towards their original table, "...we'd have the Dom Perignon first if you two don't care."
"Not at all," Tina said, smiling as a waiter handed her a filled Waterford stem.
"Then we can chow down on all of these desserts," Andy filled in, which caused those within earshot to laugh.

"I think that's a great idea, Andy," Tina told him, glancing around to see if everyone was being served. It was not long before the entire assembly had their glasses, and after some discussion, and a bit of prompting from Laura, it was decided that Maximus would make a toast. Somewhat embarrassed, the general made his way up to the raised platform and once he had gathered his thoughts, the room grew silent in anticipation of what he would say. Several pushed the sheriff and Tina closer to the front of the group so that the Spaniard would be able to look at them as he spoke.
"Well...Laura asked if I would say a few words on behalf of not only our birthday girl, but now...." He sighed. "I realize some of you, Laura included, believe I knew what John had in mind, but I swear, I did not have a clue. He never said a thing to me."
"I didn't," John announced to laughter, and then Maximus continued.
"I promise to keep this short my friends, don't worry....Nine months ago, a lovely young woman walked into the Nest and into the lives of those present at the time. I understand she has written of her experiences on what is called a...." He paused, and it was Laura who called out "message board" so he could go on. "Thank you. A message board dedicated to our Creator. When she first came here, there were barely twenty visitors, and although we do have about thirty or forty of a permanent nature, we have expanded, some of them drawn here by her accounts or..." He bent his glass in Laura's direction. "...her friendship. I brought her here, that is true, but a lot of you were brought here because of 'Gladiator' -- and she had another destiny awaiting her. I'm only glad I could, in my own small way, help her in what was meant to be. John...when I arrived here, I still remember you were the first brother I met. You spent so many hours helping me assimilate to this new life, when you were still attempting to do that yourself, and for that, I will always be grateful. And now I look at the two of you, thinking back to the day when we all realized that at last you were together as it was meant to be...." At this a few people applauded, and John eased an arm around Tina's shoulder as she leaned closer into him. "I know you have had your rough times, but even in my most pessimistic moments, I never believed you would not reunite. You are -- as so many of us use the term -- soul mates, and that is in the truest sense of the word. I cannot even think that I know what all of our futures will hold, so I can only do this. Tina, John...I know we worship different deities, but may your God and my gods bless you always. May they watch over you, protect you, give you faith in the face of adversity, and give you a long and happy life together -- in both this world and Elysium. My friends...a toast...to John and Tina!"
"To John and Tina!" everyone repeated, and the technician once more felt tears in her eyes as she drank from her glass. She watched as her fiancée -- that was such a beautiful sounding word -- shook hands with his brother. Then the general moved to Tina, placing his cheek against hers and whispering -- with a few changes -- what he had said to John, "Long life to you my dear."
"Thank you, Max. Thank you for everything," she replied.
"You and my brother here are going to have the best that life can offer, and you'll make one another content -- I know that in my heart."
"Thanks Max," John told him, and Tina -- her voice choking again -- could only nod, her feelings apparent.
A short time later, the dessert table was approached and after candles were lit on the edge of each tier, the entire group launched into 'Happy Birthday'. The birthday girl was told to make a wish, and she closed her eyes momentarily. When they opened, she announced, "I made another wish...because the one wish I had was answered tonight out in the garden. And God knows, I never thought *that* one would happen, so I'm very, very hopeful about this new one." The ballroom filled first with "Aw" and then laughter as she gave Biebe a quick kiss. All the candles were extinguished in one attempt and once the applause had died down, the servers began to cut the cake, revealing a flaky yellow interior with a strawberry filling, as well as serve the other desserts.
The DJ started the music again so anyone desiring to could dance. Bud gobbled down his thick slice of cake and a slice of lemon meringue pie before Trisha had barely finished her cake, then asked her if she wanted to dance again. She completed the last of it, then took his hand to be led out to the floor, where Colin and Michelle, Erin and Jake, Hando and Stef, and Peaches and Cort already were.
"Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight?" the cop asked, giving the Englishwoman another look over. He thought all the women looked gorgeous tonight, but he had never seen Trisha so lovely. That pewter color did something for her, and the way the design of the overdress with its' dainty beading accentuated her slender figure...it took White's breath away. She was almost like a figure from 'The Great Gatsby' -- but Daisy Buchanan had nothing on her. "Like you could have stepped out of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel." He glanced over at Hando, and saw the younger man give a thumbs-up. "Hey, you even meet our boy's approval."
She smiled softly. "Hando helped me pick this out around Christmas, but then I never had a chance to wear it anywhere. I wasn't sure about buying it anyway, but he said you never knew when an occasion might arise. And here we are."
"So I owe Hando one then," Bud grinned, his eyes almost dreamy as he pulled her closer.
Trisha sighed. Bud and those eyes of his -- when he looked that way, she remembered the scene at the cinema when he had taken Lynn out to 'Roman Holiday'. "Just continue to be nice to him, Wendell."
He lifted one hand. "I promise...for you. Well, this has been one hell of an evening."
"I'm just glad everything worked out for John. He worked so hard on all this."
"Yeah he did, and nobody deserves it more than Tina did." They turned enough to see the happy couple enjoying their dessert while talking with Arthur, Andy, Jennifer, young Johnny and Dominic. Tina was her usual animated self, her expressive hands occasionally in motion when the plate was not being held. Now and then, John would pop a strawberry between her lips, allowing her to lick the white chocolate before she took a bite. Then she would teasingly reciprocate, both of them laughing like a couple of kids. Both Trisha and Bud laughed too, thrilled to see them so obviously happy. "You...uh...you're not ready to turn in yet, are you?"
Trisha shook her head. "Not yet. I'm having a wonderful time with you. I want to dance with you until my feet give out and besides, I haven't had a chance to dance with John yet. I have to do that too." They smiled, but then she grew more serious. "Sometimes...Sometimes I'm afraid I'm neglecting you and...."
Bud placed a single finger over her lips. "No you don't. Don't even go there pretty English lady. Shit...all this stuff tonight gets me all romantic; and warm and fuzzy."
"Warm and fuzzy? Bud -- I swear, I'll never tell anyone that or you'll damage your reputation."
"Well, doesn't it get you to thinking too?"
"Yes it does I have to admit, but Wendell...let's take it slow. When it happens, it'll happen, just like it did with Tina and John. Look at all the angst they went through to get to this point. I hope that doesn't happen with us too."
Bud nuzzled her neck, causing her to giggle. "Not if I have anything to do with it."
"Bud...be careful...I don't want you to give me a hickey."
"Okay, okay, I'll be careful." He wiggled his eyebrows. "Don't worry babe. I'll just wait until we're alone later and then give you a hickey you won't forget." Trisha laughed harder as Bud swung her about to the rhythm of 'You Made Me Love You'.
Tina had put her plate down, having decided that one piece of cake was all she would have. Besides, John had fed her at least four strawberries, so she felt as if her sweet quota had been met for the night. But hey, it was a holiday for her, so why not splurge a little. As Terry and Liz moved away to join some of the others on the dance floor, John placed his arms about Tina's waist as they listened to the tune being performed by Tommy Dorsey.
"'Give me, give me, give me what I ask for. You know you have the kind of kisses that I'd die for. You know you made me love you,'" the technician sang softly, feeling John gently kiss her collarbone.
"I remember this one. You said you sang it at that talent show on that one cruise you were on."
"Yeah, when I got my nerve up. I love that song."
"Me too. This is fantastic. Everybody seems to be having a great time."
"Yeah they are. You my love, you know how to throw quite a bash."
"My pleasure -- anything for you."
They did not notice when Laura returned to Maximus' side after speaking to the DJ, and then said something to Terry Thorne once the big band tune was over. The newest incarnation cleared his throat and in a ringing voice announced, "Everyone! Hey everyone! Thanks mates," and there was quiet once more. "Max thought it might be nice if I gave a bit of input at the party -- make me feel even more a part of you mates. Besides, I want to be certain my fellow Australians are well represented."
"That's telling them!" Lachlan shouted, and all the Aussies cheered enthusiastically. Lady caught Sid rolling his eyes as he shook his head, and she gave him a slight nudge.
"At any rate, I'll make this short so we can get back to the party. I think it's past time the Nest's first officially engaged couple had their first dance as such." The ballroom filled with applause from not only the guests, but the help as well. "Laura has told the DJ what to perform -- said you'd understand. So don't make us wait you two. Come on mate. You and your Sheila get out here."
The clapping now took on its' own beat as the group began to shout "Tina! Tina!" and "John! John!" or simply to cheer and stomp. As they did, the sheriff took her hand, and the couple proceeded to the ballroom's center, Tina wiping her eyes once more. Gathering her in his strong arms, he kissed her forehead and they smiled on hearing the mellow opening notes of Joe's 'I Wanna Know'.
"That's their song," Michelle whispered, sniffing back her tears as Colin kissed her.
"That's why I asked him to play it," Laura explained, watching as her best friend and Biebe began to move in time. "This was the first song they really listened to, and the one Tina tried to teach John to dance to that night they went to dinner together." She looked up at Max, who was smiling thoughtfully. "By the way, thank you for that." The gladiator only smiled and took his companion's hand.
If John Biebe had thought he was nervous the day he skated onto the ice to play the Rangers, it was nothing compared to being the center of attention again as he mentally counted his steps, and tried not to crush Tina's feet. He remembered all the times he had done that because he had been trying too hard. Michelle was the one who finally calmed him enough that he was now a reasonably decent dancer. Now, not being able to help but notice the many eyes on them, the Alaskan still felt so relaxed, he caught himself trying out a couple of new moves Michelle had secretly taught him, and he'd been worried about using earlier. This was his opportunity. He saw the delight in Tina' eyes as she followed his lead, watching as he took a step backwards with his left leg, shifted his weight to the right, and stared the tango's corte. Smiling, Tina bent her right knee as she stepped forward, leaning almost sensually into his form as he bent backwards, nearly lifting her off the floor. The couple completed the tango close, the beat a slow, slow, quick, quick, slow, their eyes never leaving the other's.
"Way to go Tio!" Stef whooped and Hando screamed alongside her, which only encouraged the others.
"Did you teach him that?" Colin asked Michelle, seeing her mouth hanging open.
"I...I showed him a few tango basics, but I had no.... Oh my God!" She almost screamed when John managed a promenade, involving a ninety degree turn to the left on his part.
Tina was giggling, positively ecstatic as she moved with John, almost holding her breath for the tango -- to her -- was almost as wonderful as lovemaking itself.
"Keep looking like that darlin' and we'll both be having a you-know-what right here in front of everyone," Biebe teased as he held her near.
"I know," she sighed, trembling with excitement. "I can't believe you've learned...all this."
"Well if everyone keeps watching me like this, I'll probably flub up somewhere."
"Then don't look at everyone -- look at me." She felt a tear roll down her cheek, landing on her lower lip. "I love you so much," she mouthed, removing her right hand from his left to trace a pattern over his mouth.
Kath was shaking her head. "She mouthed something. Anybody know what Tina said? Anybody?" she eagerly asked. East just chuckled, but it was Andy -- who was standing nearby -- who caught the words passing between the engaged couple.
"Tina said 'I love you so much.' And John...." He stopped, squinting his eyes.
"John what Andy?" Kath asked.
"Yeah Andy, what?" Kel added.
"John's saying...John's saying, 'I'll love you 'til the day I die.'" Jennifer, Kath and Kel all went "Aw," nearly melting into the arms of anyone nearby.
It was almost at that moment, with a signal from Max, that the net on the ceiling suddenly fell aside, allowing the numerous balloons to drift through the air like snowflakes, bouncing across the waxed floor before coming to a pause. Soon the room was filled with them until John and Tina were nearly floating on top. They completed the final pivots in the open fan movement of the tango, ending with Tina throwing her arms around his neck, while the Alaskan lifted her off the ground, holding her tightly as he continued to move. Placing her face against his, she whispered over and over, "I love you, John. I love you," no longer hearing the clapping and shouts.
When the song finally concluded, and segued without break into 'Isn't It Romantic?' John put her down as others joined them on the floor. Trisha rushed up and asked if she could dance with John for the first time that evening, and Tina obliged. She took Mannie's hand as they all switched partners, Bud with Laura, Arthur with fellow Welsh native Kath, and some of the others also changing around. NJ and Brynn both noticed how -- as they walked apart -- the betrothed couple continued to touch until the very end.
The evening was young; the port and Champagne continued to flow; desserts were still available. Although a few began to slip away after once more giving Tina and John their best, the majority remained to dance that Tuesday night away.
When Brynn last saw the birthday girl and her beloved Alaskan lawman, they were locked in an embrace, dancing to 'Bent,' surrounded by Colin and Michelle and Kath and East -- the two looking as though they would be awake until dawn. As excited as they were, she had a feeling they probably would be.
Epilogues
Brynn and Steve sat on the couch in Steve's room watching a movie and sipping a shared beer between the two of them. People had begun to wander out of the party about two hours ago and they took the chance to break away from the festivities to talk and relax. The evening had been full of excitement and Brynn silently wondered how Tina was sleeping or rather, if she was able to sleep. Being engaged to a man like John Beibe, Brynn was sure Tina wouldn't doing a whole lot of anything for the next few weeks except smiling a lot. The thought brought a smile to her own face just in time for Steve to turn around to face her on the sofa.
"What are you smiling about over there?" He questioned, with a twinkle in his eye. "Are you thinking about John and Tina?"
"Yeah," Brynn nodded. "I just hope the two of them are happy forever. I don't know two people that deserve it more."
"I know John pretty well, Brynn, and I know he is going to spend his every waking minute making that woman happy." Steve commented before picking up the remote and pushing the pause button. Neither of them seemed to interested in watching the movie at that point. Looking at Brynn again, Steve let out a chuckle. They had gone straight to his room after the party, not bothering to get anything for Brynn to change into. When they arrived, she immediately raided his closet and dresser, excusing herself into the bathroom to put on a pair of his boxer shorts and a sweatshirt. Looking at her now, made him chuckle even harder. Despite the shorts and the sweatshirt, her hair and make-up were still elegantly done.
"Now what are you laughing at?" Brynn asked, watching Steve take in the sight of her. "What's so funny?"
"You." He replied simply. "You just look so beautiful from the neck up. Then you take in the sweatshirt that's almost four sizes too big for you and a pair of baggy boxer shorts and it kinda ruins the effect."
"Well I'm so glad I could amuse you this evening, Steve," she retorted, taking the beer from him so she could have another sip. After taking her drink and handing it back to him, she reached behind her head and undid the blue rhinestone butterfly clasps that held her hair in place, letting the curls spill down over her back. "There, is that better?"
"Nope, you don't look any less beautiful than you did a minute ago," he teased, causing her to slap his leg. "Seriously," he said when the laughter had passed. "I'm really glad that we've been able to become friends. I mean, I've only hung out with you a few times and you feel enough at home here to raid my closet so that you can wear my clothes."
Brynn shrugged. "I think it's just the way I am. I feel at home almost anywhere, I tend to have a way of fitting into almost every situation with ease. I had a teacher once in one of the classes I took tell me that I was like a chameleon. I could blend in anywhere to make myself comfortable."
Nodding slightly as he listened to her words, Steve silently agreed. "That's a good analogy."
"I don't think so," Brynn frowned. "I don't change to fit the situation or the people that I'm with, I just am who I am, and I am either accepted or rejected. At first here I was accepted, then with the Hando thing, I was rejected. My point being that I never changed who I was through out the whole thing. I just accepted what people thought of me. Even now, after the thing with Bud this afternoon..." She glanced at the clock that hung on the wall. " ... scratch that, yesterday afternoon in the tavern, I never changed who I was. I didn't want to accept the things that Bud was saying to me. Just because I'm wild and crazy sometimes and like to have fun, doesn't mean I am a bad person."
"I know you're not a bad person." Steve agreed. "And I think White got over what it was that was eating at him. I saw the two of you dancing and I even saw Bud smile at you."
"Let's just say, it was the closest thing to an apology that Bud is capable of. He isn't the type of guy that will apologize and gush all over you." Brynn smiled to herself. That was one of the things she liked most about Bud, because like her, he wouldn't change himself to fit the situation. He'd admitted he was wrong, but barely. "You see the thing Bud doesn't know about me is that sleeping around isn't my style. Actually to tell you the truth of the matter, I've only been with one person intimately." Brynn lowered her head, looking at the paisley pattern on the boxer shorts she was wearing.
"Hey, Brynn," Steve said, making her look up at him. "That's not a bad thing, ya know. I find it admirable that you've been able to hold out as long as you have. You're a very pretty girl and I know you've had more than the odd offer here and there."
"But like I told you earlier tonight, I think we should be good friends and take it day by day. I won't push you for anything you're not ready for and I'm not going to try and change you in any way. I kinda like ya just the way you are," he told her, changing the subject with such ease that Brynn hadn't even noticed it.
Taking his hand in her, she smiled at him. "Well enough of this mushy talk then, get the movie back on." Steve knew that like Bud, this was Brynn's way of dealing with the situation and saying thank you without actually saying it.
Steve got up from his seat to get a refill on the beer. On his way back, he paused to light a candle and turn off the lights, before once again sitting at the end of the couch. Putting his legs across the other two seats he motioned for Brynn to join him, letting her settle in with her back against his chest and using him for pillow. He wrapped his legs around hers and let her turn to get comfortable before grabbing the remote and turning on the movie once again.
When Brynn opened her eyes, she could see light trying to break through the sides of the shades covering the windows. It must be morning, although she had no idea what time it was. It had already been morning when they'd decided to watch the movie. She held her breath, straining to hear any sounds of movement in the tavern below. All she heard was the steady sound of Steve's breathing. Her ear lay against his chest and she lay still for several minutes feeling the rise and fall of his torso with each inhale and exhale.
Any other time, this situation would have made her uncomfortable, but she felt at peace here with Steve.
Deciding she didn't want to get up right away, she rolled over from her side to her stomach. Steve opened his eyes long enough to smile at her and wrap his arms tighter around her waist, pulling her against him. "I thought you'd be gone by now," he whispered as she once again got comfortable laying on top of him.
"Nah," Brynn mumbled through a yawn. "I like having you as a human mattress." She pulled the blanket from the back of the couch and used it to cover both of them, before snuggling into Steve's chest and once again, letting sleep claim her.
Tina's eyes opened, closed, then opened again, and on shivering from a chill, tugged the ivory satin sheet closer to her chin as she nearly dozed once more. She lay there for the longest time, part of her mind wanting nothing more than to return to deep sleep, and another attempting to organize thoughts coming at her at breakneck speed. She hated those times of the morning, when it seemed that everything her brain had collected during the night decided to hit her simultaneously, completely unorganized. No wonder she sometimes awoke with throbbing headaches -- especially at home, when the Ohio Valley weather gave her sinuses even more problems. But was she at home? An eye opened and slowly searched the room. No...this wasn't the master bedroom in her apartment, and she smiled. She was at the Nest, and in the beautiful suite she considered her second home, just as she had for the last nine months. Stretching a little, she almost rolled off her left side, but decided against it, feeling absolutely lazy right now.
Okay she considered, squinting, let me search through the fuzzy brain. What exactly was going on? What time is it? What's the last thing I remember? /Ooo...too many questions. One at a time// She could just make out the numbers on the screen of the clock radio on the nightstand. Six-forty-two. Ack! Too early. When the hell had she gone to bed? She couldn't remember just then, and Tina slowly retraced her steps. There had been a party...a big formal party with lots of food, and drink, and dancing...and an engagement...Her engagement. Her engagement? /Now that doesn't make any freaking sense. Who would be proposing...to...me?// For a second, the old uncertain, lonely Tina returned as she yawned and moved again, realizing only then that she was laying in the crook of someone's body.
"Sweetheart? You awake?" came a groggy whisper, and she smiled slightly.
"Mmph," came her reply. It was too early to think straight, let alone talk straight too.
"You awake?" the question was asked again, accompanied by a yawn.
"Uh-uh." Her body shook a little as John's deep chuckle vibrated through her, and her smile increased. "Go back to sleep."
"Sure." He shifted, allowing her to settle closer, but her back remained to him. There was silence for about a minute, then he mumbled, "Nobody's gonna be up this early."
That was odd, she attempted to reason. At this time of the morning, normally East, Cort, Maximus and Mannie were wide awake and more than likely in the stables seeing to the horses. Now she was beginning to feel more alert, and she whispered, "I had the weirdest dream." More silence. Perhaps the sheriff had already returned to sleep, which was not a bad idea. Her mind changed when his soft beard brushed against the nape of her neck.
"What about?"
"Huh?" She felt a strong bare leg rub one of her smaller limbs, linking with it briefly.
"Weird dream; you said you had a weird dream. What about?"
"It...." She stopped and shut her eyes, trying to recall the details as best she could. "It was my birthday,...and you threw me a surprise party. It was so beautiful...and everybody was all dressed up in black tie and fancy clothes. And there were balloons...and Dom Perignon...." Her voice trailed.
"Sounds nice. What else?" The thick mattress moved behind her, but she was going back to that state between consciousness and sleep so she paid it little mind. Even with closed eyes, she detected when the lowest setting to the three-way bulb in a nearby lamp flickered on.
"Everybody was there...and we danced and danced...and there was prime rib...and salmon. Oh, and free range chicken breast."
"You're making me hungry."
The accent sounded distant, but she continued. "And birthday cake and chocolate mousse...and you fed me strawberries. Mmm...strawberries in white chocolate."
"Now I'm really getting hungry." The voice was moving away from the bed.
Tina giggled, her eyes still closed as she shook her head. "You asked me to marry you." There was no answer, so she said nothing more, almost afraid to repeat the statement in case it embarrassed both of them. She regretted having said it now.
"What did you say?"
The calmness of his voice startled her. "I think I said yes...Yeah, yeah I did. I said yes. But it was a nice dream. Of course I'd say yes."
"Yeah, nice dreams ought to have nice endings, but it wasn't a dream." Eyes flying open, Tina stiffly sat up, still buried against the numerous, varying sized pillows at the headboard. Biebe was standing in front of the fireplace, adjusting the thermostat dial, and she could not help but notice his firm build as he stood there. Wearing only a pair of light blue boxers, her attention was drawn to how his biceps flexed when he shifted his weight. Well-fed, eh? /Just remind me the next time we're in Mystery for me to back hand Chuckie-Boy -- again// "You too warm? I didn't realize I'd left it turned up so high when we laid down."
"It is a little warm. You can cut it down if you.... What do you mean it wasn't a dream? It was...."
"Your birthday party last night." John turned to face her, smiling as he did. "I think we all had too much wine, too much port and way too much Champagne. We didn't get to bed until almost four. Well, most of us didn't anyway."
The blank expression finally disappeared, and she returned his smile. "No wonder I'm..." She giggled. "I guess we had a good time then?"
"The best. I've had some great times with you since you came, but last night...it might have topped them all."
Giggling harder, she laid back, pushing the sheet and comforter down towards her waist. Fumbling with the bedding as she watched John move around the room, she commented, "I wish I could remember everything."
"It'll come back to you. Just give it time."
Sighing, cocking her head to the side, she stared at him, still attempting to sort things in her mind. All of the events of the evening were slowly returning to her, and she felt a sudden chill as her eyes followed the movement of John's body. There was that moment...that moment when she opened a jewelry box.... "I said yes," she whispered in disbelief.
John climbed back onto the right side of the bed, easing himself against the pillows. "You said yes." Turning at an angle to face her, a few strands of auburn hair fell across his forehead, and Tina gently pushed them aside. She was staring into eyes which -- at this moment -- were a soft shade of green, almost to the point of transparency, and she felt herself drifting into them. He was smiling, tickled that the realization of their evening was finally making sense to her. At least, he hoped it was.
"But I...." she stammered.
"Have you looked at your hand yet?"
"My...." She suddenly glanced down and gasped, because on the third finger of her left hand was something which had never been there before. Through the haze it was all returning to her: the garden...John handing her the gift...her opening the jewelry box thinking it was earrings or some similar piece...Then that scream when she saw what was inside. "Oh...my...God." Even in the muted lighting, if held just the right way, the minimal number of inclusions combined with the facets were enough to make the diamonds -- even the sidestones -- come to life.
"Remember now?"
"I didn't dream it?" She was uncertain whether to say this as a question, or as a statement of fact.
"You didn't dream it, darlin'. The proof's right there on your finger."
"Oh John," came her choked reply, and she laid her head upon his chest, giving his birthmark a lingering kiss which made him jump slightly at the touch. The warmth of her lips on his cool skin caused him to shudder, wanting nothing more to make love to her were she not so exhausted.
"It's too late to change your mind now. I'd have to consider that a breach of contract."
Her left hand drifted over the flat of his stomach. "No, no, I...I haven't changed my mind." He could hear tears forming in her voice even as she tried to joke with him. He looked down at her, letting his fingertips tenderly stroke her soft golden brown hair, which now flowed loose to her shoulders. "I...I guess...I guess I still can't believe that anyone...." She swallowed hard. "I can't believe you want to do this...and with me."
"Did you look inside your ring?"
"Hmm?" She sat up enough to place her chin on his ribcage.
"Your ring, sweetheart. Did you look inside the ring? On the band I mean."
She shook her head. "No I hadn't...but I'm lucky I didn't lose this what with all that was going on." Very carefully removing the band, she propped herself up on her elbow while Biebe turned the light a little brighter. "Thanks." Holding the ring up, she squinched, hoping to be able to see without her glasses or contacts, then brought it closer to her eyes. Something was engraved on the band's interior -- tiny script lettering which she could finally make out on adjusting the angle. "Okay...Uh...." Tina paused, lowering the ring to look at John before she returned her attention to the inscription. "It...Uh...'JMB to ERS -- Soulmates forever'....'Soulmates forever,'" she repeated, slipping the ring back on her hand. She was trembling, the tears once more spilling down her cheeks, and she held her left hand within her right as if to protect the ring and all it now symbolized.
"Darlin'...you okay?"
"No," she admitted, sniffing. "No."
Smiling, he pulled her down so that her head was partially on the pillows, but her body laid against his. Wrapping an arm around her, he held her tight, his fingers drifting over the curve of her back. "I know -- it takes a little getting used to, doesn't it?"
"Yeah...guess it will," she admitted, wiping away her tears.
They had only lain for a short time when John softly said, "Have you thought about a date yet?"
Stretching lazily and yawning, she nodded. "Sort of...You know, when I was changing clothes, washing my face, getting ready for bed. I was thinking about a few dates."
"Like?"
"Hmm...Oh...well, I thought about the High Holy Day of the Crowe calendar...."
"My birthday...Well, me and my brothers."
"That's too soon though. That's why I figured probably not."
"Any others? How about...your birthday?"
She grinned. "Nice, but that's a whole year. I don't think I'd want to wait that long."
"How about...Thanksgiving? Or...let's see...well, Christmas or New Year's Eve?"
"I've got to work Thanksgiving and Christmas, and somebody's going to be on vacation already, so I don't think I could get the time off. I was even going to suggest the first anniversary of when I came to the Nest...."
"That'd be a good one."
"But it's a little too soon too. I need some time to make arrangements."
"Well just remember, darlin' -- makes this your storybook wedding." She giggled. "I don't know what you've had in mind, or even if you ever have, but make this your dream wedding." She smiled as he continued. "We...can...have an outdoor summer wedding near the ocean or in the English gardens, or a church ceremony in the Nest chapel. Doesn't matter. This is your wedding."
"And yours too. Don't forget that, John. It's your wedding too."
He gave her a little squeeze. "Thanks sweetheart."
"That's why I need a little time to organize myself. I always used to say I had my wedding planned -- all I needed was the groom."
"Well, now you've got him."
They both laughed softly, then were quiet once more until Tina suddenly said, "First of October."
"Hmm? What did you say?" The sheriff was beginning to doze again.
"The first of October. The date you came to the Nest....The date when 'Mystery, Alaska' was released in the States." John shifted so as to look at her better. "It's not way, way off in the future, but it'll give us all time to plan."
"The first of October."
"What do you think?"
"I think..." and he lifted her slightly so that she rested nearly on top of him, "...I think...that would be a great date."
"So..." she smiled.
"So...let's go with it." With that decision, they shared a gentle kiss....
Tina could barely sleep she was so excited, but she tried, drowsing for about an hour until she woke herself again. Looking at John and seeing he was peacefully at rest, she eased out of the bed, and made her way into the sitting room. Going to the laptop on her desk, she booted it up and after signing onto her server, logged onto a favorite electronic greeting card program. She spent a few minutes doing a search before a smile accompanied by a soft laugh tickled her sense of humor. Making a decision, she began to personalize the card, and had barely typed the message when John came up behind her, surprising her when he grabbed her about the waist.
"What the hell are you doing?" he asked jokingly, snuggling with her and making her laugh harder.
"John!" She still continued to type, but her concentration was broken.
"What are you doing, darlin'?"
"Just making an e-card to send to the Barn and the Nest lists, so everyone can hear the good news." Tina pointed at the monitor. "What do you think?"
The Alaskan studied the animation, then smiled. "That's cute. I like it. I know it's slanted more for someone congratulating a couple on their engagement, but I like your note." Tina grinned proudly as John kissed her cheek. "I think they'll just love hearing the news and seeing the card that it won't matter."
"And I really didn't like some of the others, but this...." She squirmed as he tickled her some, then lifted her out of the chair, holding her in his arms. "John! Will you at least let me hit SEND?"
"Hit it and come to bed woman!" he growled teasingly. Leaning backwards as he lowered her, Tina moved the mouse and clicked once. A few seconds later, the screen showed that the card had been sent and a confirmation would be forwarded to her mailbox. "Woohoo! Now...I want you in that bed. *Now* young lady!"
"Yes sir," she replied with a sharp salute, laughing almost hysterically when Biebe carried her into the bedroom.
It would be several hours before Tina would
see that both lists were on fire with responses and her mailbox
packed with congratulations. But as she lay in the four-poster, she
and John sharing their bodies for a little time, all that mattered
was the man who had made this the best birthday of her life. And an
hour later, as she drifted into a deep slumber, the date October
first kept making her sleepily smile. So much to do, she considered,
her ring hand resting on John's broad chest. So much to do....
The End.
