Part One
"Lisa!, Lisa, are you awake in there?"
She jerked awake. Someone was pounding on her door and yelling her name. Lisa rolled over, looking at the clock. //Nine in the morning, what an ungodly time to be awake.// Stretching, she looked at the room around her, squinting at the sunshine flooding the windows through the open curtain. Her brow furrowed with confusion. Where was she?
Suddenly it all came back in a flood of memories. Her car running out of gas, East finding her crying in the rain, Bud making her come inside the Tavern, every last humiliating detail burned into her mind. Then she remembered Terry forcing her to confront Jeff about her feelings for him, finding, in the ashes of her unrequited love, a deep friendship. The object of her affection who was now pounding on her door. Lisa smiled.
"Alright, alright." She jerked the door open just a Jeff's foot connected with it for another knock. "Whoa!" She made a grab for the tray that tilted dangerously as Jeff lost his balance.
"Easy, luv." Jeff's grin was infectious. He righted the tray and walked into Lisa's room Setting the tray on a small table by the window, he turned to her. "I brought you some brekkie. Thought you might need something before we start our day."
Lisa looked at the handsome man standing in front of her window, silhouetted by the sun. His hair was damp and he had it combed back away from his face. But she could see the rich, dark auburn color in the ends that were already drying at his nape. //He's gorgeous. God, why'd have to go and make him gay?// "Jeff, darling, there's something you have to know if we're going to be friends," Lisa tried to look serious.
"Yes?" He had to admit his interest was peaked. After the big confession from last night, he couldn't imagine what this could be.
"I'm really not much of a morning person. I've worked 7 years of nightshift and I think that you are way to cheery for nine o'clock in the morning." She wrinkled her nose at him and lifted the cover on the tray. Under it, she saw a toasted english muffin, strawberries, a small bowl of whipped cream and a pot of tea with two cups. "Two cups?"
"Yeah, well, I thought I'd join ya for a cuppa. I already ate breakfast with Rick before I went on my run. I wasn't sure what you would like to eat so I decided to keep it simple. Do you want anything else?"
Lisa picked up one of the tea cups. "Exchange this for a diet Pepsi and I'm yours for life." She winked at him.
"Alright, deal. I'll be back in two ticks." Jeff stopped, his hand on the door, when Lisa called out his name.
"Leave it unlocked. I'm going to grab a quick shower while your gone." She grabbed half the english muffin off the plate and walked toward the bathroom.
"Not a good idea in this place," Jeff elaborated when he saw the puzzled look on Lisa's face. "Ya know, people in showers with unlocked doors, Sid living here."
Lisa's mouth formed a perfect O. In all that had happened in the last twenty-four hours, she'd forgotten that Sid lived here too. "O-kay. Well then, here take my key." She dug it out of her pants pocket and tossed it to Jeff.
He deftly caught it, "Tooroo." He watched Lisa take a bite of the english muffin as she turned toward the bathroom. He slipped out of the room, locking the door firmly behind him.
When Lisa walked out of the bathroom, toweling her hair, Jeff was sitting at the table drinking a cup of tea. He looked her over while she had her head buried in the towel. She was wearing jeans and a loose fitting red polo shirt. Her feet were bare and he could see that her toenails were paint a shiny metallic blue. Her arms over her head was causing her shirt to ride up slightly, revealing a tiny strip of bare skin. Jeff promptly pressed the frosty Pepsi can against the pale flesh. He took fiendish delight in her startled yelp.
"So darlin'," he drawled, "you and Lachlan got on like a house on fire last night. You sure spent alot of time talking to him." His voice was teasing.
Lisa popped him with the towel that was in her hand. "I wouldn't have had to talk to him for so long if a certain someone hadn't ran off for a quickie with a certain blonde waiter." She slid into the chair across from him.
Jeff had the good sense to blush. "What can I say? Rick's completely rootable." He grinned wickedly. "But don't get me wrong here, luv. I think its great that you and Lachlan got on. He's had a bit of trouble lately. His breakup with Brynn hurt him alot. It was nice to see him out, having a go of it."
Lisa held up her hands, "Now hold on there, sweetie." She picked a strawberry and threw it at him. Jeff caught it and popped it into his mouth. Lisa's voice was serious. "Don't go playing match-maker here. I just got over you. I'm not ready for someone else."
"W a'n ryin o ay achmaer" Jeff mumbled around the strawberry in his mouth.
"What?" Lisa had no idea what he was trying to say.
Jeff chewed quickly and swallowed. "I said, I wasn't trying to play matchmaker. I was just pointing out the obvious. I think you and Lachlan would make..." His voice trailed off at Lisa's pleading look.
"Jeff, don't start." She really didn't want to think about it. That shiver of awareness that passed between her and Lachlan when he sat next to her last night. She was afraid she was just transferring her romantic feeling for Jeff to one of his 'brothers.' She remembered Terry's words to her, "You need to love someone for real, someone who can love you back." Was she so desperate to be loved that she fixated on the first unattached guy around?
Jeff watched the emotions play across her face. She better never play poker with anyone 'cuz she can't hide anything she's feeling. "Alright, alright. Finish your brekkie. I want to show you around the Nest."
"Ok," Lisa swirled a strawberry through the whipped cream and handed it to him, grabbing another for herself. It didn't take her long to finish eating. She slipped her bare feet into felt clogs and followed Jeff out the door.
Neither one of them noticed the figure on the second story balcony of the Tavern as they walked to the stables. A man whose blue-green eyes were focused intently on Lisa's retreating figure.
Part Two
Lachlan Curry was watching Lisa and Jeff walk away. Long after their figures blurred, he could still make out a speck of red from Lisa's shirt. //What is it about this sheila?// He was surprised by the shiver of awareness that had streaked up his arm the night before, when he touched her on the shoulder. They had talked for awhile, while Jeff was gone. Lachlan had to admit there was something there, something between them. But he was still stinging from his breakup with Brynn. That love affair had started out white hot and fast. Then it ended with bitter accusations from him. They had parted as friends but the thought of what might have been still made him a little sad.
Lachlan could tell that Lisa was different. He was pretty sure she didn't have anything pierced although he wasn't positive about that. And he was pretty sure she wouldn't run off with Hando and then defend him. Okay, that wasn't fair. Brynn didn't run off with Hando, he kidnapped her. But she did defend him against the lynch mob at the Nest. He just couldn't see Lisa doing anything with Hando. When he talked to her, she seemed a little shy. Besides, she had come to the Nest for Jeff Mitchell. Hardly makes for friendship material with a skinhead. Lachlan shook his head. He was over-analyzing things again.
"Doesn't mean you can't go down and say G'day." He told himself. Lachlan turned back into his room to get dressed.
Jeff and Lisa strolled towards the stables. He was pointing things out to her as they walked.
"Over there," he pointed to a building in the distance, "is the ice arena. There's a small town nearby and John has organized a city hockey league of sort. The blokes come out here for games. John brags that it's the best ice around."
"I'd love to go to a game!" Lisa was excited about the possibility of watching John Biebe play hockey. "When is the next game?"
Jeff shook his head. "I have no idea. You'll have to ask John. I don't usually go to the games."
Lisa grabbed his hand. "Well, you're going to a game with me. If I have to watch rugby and footy with you then you have to watch hockey with me."
"But it's cold in the arena." he whined, "And I don't understand the rules."
"Wear a sweater, buddy. And I'll explain the rules to you." Lisa pulled him towards the arena. "Come on. Maybe John's there and we can ask him."
Jeff pulled back. "But I thought you wanted to go to the barn and see the neddies."
"Well, yes but..." she trailed off as Jeff turned back to the stables, dragging her behind him.
"Come on, we are closer to the barn. We'll go look for John afterwards."
Lisa pouted, "I suppose."
"Stop pouting. Maybe Max is here and he can show you Argento." Jeff watched Lisa's face brighten at the thought of meeting her car's name sake.
They were both surprised when a dog came tearing out the door of the stables. He was medium sized, his bridled black and gray coat made him seem almost blue in color. He skidded to a stop in front of Lisa. He looked up a her, his tail wagging in greeting. She would almost swear he was smiling at her. She squatted down to rub him behind the ears. She jerked when he barked at her. He put his front paws on her bended leg and reached up to lick her cheek. She laughed. Both dog and woman started when a booming voice said, "Where is that bloody dog?"
"Ah-ha!" Strong hands reached out and captured the elusive mutt. Mannie tucked him firmly under one arm. "G'day, Jeff"
"G'day, Mannie." Jeff pointed to Lisa, who was still kneeling on the ground. She was staring up in shock at the man standing above her. Jeff put out his hand and pulled her up. "Mannie, this is Lisa. Lisa, this is Mannie."
Mannie tipped his hat slightly. "G'day, Lisa. If you'll excuse me, it's Monday. So this thing," he rubbed a hand affectionately on the dog's head, "gets a bath. Pleasure to meet you." He walked off, whistling a tune that Lisa recognized as the "Monday is wash day," song from Silver Brumby.
She blinked hard and stared at the retreating figure, "That..that was..that was 'The Man.'"
"Yeah" Jeff suppressed a smile at her dazed look. "But around here we just call him Mannie."
"He's taller than I thought."
"Lisa, he's the same height as the rest of us." Jeff just shook his head.
She glared at him. "Well, he looks taller."
"Must be the boots."
Lisa slapped Jeff lightly on the arm, "Bastard" she said affectionately. They were almost at the stable when a voice called out their names. They both turned to see Lachlan trotting up to them.
"G'day, Jeff. G'day, Lisa" Lachlan's smile was wide. On the way out of the Tavern, he had been stopped by Rick. He now had the perfect excuse to send Jeff back to the Tavern. He turned to Jeff. "Mate, Rick is looking for ya. He's back at the Tavern, wants to talk to ya."
"Oh. Well, I was showing Lisa around the Nest."
"No worries, mate." Lachlan laid a hand on his shoulder. "I can do that. I'll give her an aerial view of the place if she'd like." Lachlan turned to Lisa. "What'cha say? Ya up for it?"
Lisa hesitated. She remember the planes that Lachlan had flown in his movie. She tried to think of a polite way to turn him down, "Well, I'm not so sure..."
"Nonsense!" Jeff interrupted, "It will be bonzer. You'll love it."
Lisa eyed him suspiciously. She could tell he was trying to do the matchmaking thing again. "J-e-ff.." She dragged out his name into three syllables, her tone held a warning.
"Seriously, luv. You really will like it." Jeff winked at her. "Come on, give it a go."
Lachlan watched the interplay between the two friends. He saw the way they almost didn't need words to speak to each other. //Amazing, you would never know they just met last night.// He tamped down a tinge of jealousy.
"Jeff's right. It will be fun." Lachlan turned his best smile on her.
Lisa looked back and forth between the two smiling men. //Who could resist?// "Alright, alright. I'll go."
"Ripper!" Jeff gave her a quick hug. "I'll see you back at the Tavern after your flight." He turned to Lachlan. "Take care of her, mate."
"I will." Lachlan assured him. He watched Jeff walk off. Turning to Lisa, he said, "Well, let's head to the hanger."
A short time later they were airborne. Lisa had been relieved to see that instead of a World War II plane, Lachlan's aircraft of choice was a sleek new Cessna Skyhawk. She was impressed by the way this pilot from the last big war expertly managed this modern aircraft with it's state of the art technology. She remarked on that fact.
"I took some flying lessons. It's really not that hard switch aircraft. The principles of flight are still the same, just the instrument panels are different." He smiled, "Don't get me wrong. I still have my old plane too. But its getting harder and harder to find parts for her when she breaks down. So I only take her out once in a while. Okay, back to the tour."
Lisa looked the direction he was pointing. She could see a clearing in the middle of the woods that surrounded the Crowe's Nest. "Is that were Maximus trains?"
"Yep, he's even got Hando training with him out there." Lachlan shook his head, still surprised at the thought of the honorable Roman General taking the angry young skinhead under his wing. "It's really amazing to see the change that it's brought about in Hando. But I still don't trust him so be careful if you happen to run into him."
"I will." She was positive on that fact. There were two people at the Crowe's Nest that scared the hell out of her, Hando and Sid. If she had her way, she'd never encounter either one of them. She knew it was wishful thinking, after all it was their home too. She let out a gasp when the plane jerked a little. "Lachlan, what the hell was that?"
"Just a little air pocket, luv." He tightened his grip on the controls. "We've run into a wee bit of turbulence. So just hang on for a tick. We'll be out of it soon." The plane lurched again, dropping several hundred feet.
Lisa felt like her stomach had hit her feet. She turned wide eyes towards Lachlan. "Are you sure it's okay?"
"She's apples." He assured her. "Really, it happens all the time. You just don't notice it in a bigger plane." He fought the controls as a particularly strong gust of wind rocked the plane. It tipped to the side slightly, he heard a quiet thump. He righted the plane, keeping the nose level with the horizon.
"Lachlan?" Lisa's voice was weak. "I think we better land, NOW."
"Why?" He turned to look at her. His
eyes widened. "Dammit!. I think you're right."
Part Three
Lisa watched with morbid fascination as the blood dripped from between her fingers and splashed in small drops onto her jeans and the leather seats of Lachlan's Cessna. She had been leaning slightly forward when the plane had lurched. Her head had collided with the instrument panel in front of her. At first it didn't register what had happened. She was watching Lachlan expertly man the controls of the aircraft, marveling on how his strong hands kept the tiny plane level in the punishing wind. Then she had felt something warm running down the side of her face. She had put a hand up and was shocked when it came away red, covered in blood. That's when she told Lachlan that they should land.
Lachlan grabbed the handkerchief out of his back pocket and handed it to Lisa. "Keep pressure on it. We'll be down soon." He banked the plane sharply and headed back to the hanger. He periodically glanced over at Lisa. She was so pale, the blood standing out starkly against her white face. He could see that his handkerchief was turning red and there were still tiny rivulets of blood seeping from under it to trail down Lisa's face. Lachlan could barely keep his hands from shaking as he landed the plane.
Lachlan help Lisa out of the plane. She smiled at him tentatively. "I'm sorry Lachlan, I think I got blood on your seats." She followed him over to the office. Lisa's head was pounding. Suddenly she noticed blackness creeping up along the edges of her vision. "Lachlan, I'm sorry but I think I'm going to faint."
Lachlan turned just in time to catch her as her eyes rolled back. He swept her up into his arms and carried her inside his small office, where he kept his flight logs. Lachlan could feel the warmth of her blood seeping through his white shirt. He tenderly laid her down on the little couch. He sat down in the chair next to the desk and reached with trembling hands for the phone. First he tried the phone at the arena, he was hoping that John Biebe was there. But the phone just kept ringing, no one to answer it. He rang the tavern next.
"Crowe's Tavern, Dominic speaking"
"Dom, it's Lachlan. Please tell me that John or Bud or someone like that is there. And if they are, get them on the phone." Lachlan could hear the panic in his voice and he took several deep breathes. //Come, John, be there!//
"Lachlan, it's John. What's up?" John's deep voice was full of concern.
"OH God, John. Lisa and I had a bit of bother. I took her up in the aeroplane, we ran into some turbulence, she hit her head." Lachlan's voice was shaky. "John, I can't get her to wake up and there's a hell of a lot of blood."
John's eyes widened. He quickly glanced over at Dominic, motioning him over. He wrote a note on a napkin as he listen to Lachlan talk. 'Get the first aid kit and tell Jeff to come over here.' He turned his attention back to Lachlan. "Okay, calm down. I need some details from you. First, did she lose consciousness when she hit her head or later?"
"Later, she was alright when we got out but about halfway to the office she fainted."
"Okay, I'm coming out. I'm bringing the first aid kit." He looked up to see Jeff standing next him, a concerned look on his face. "Jeff's coming with me, we'll be right there. If she wakes up, just keep her still." He handed the phone back to Dominic and traded it for the large first aid kit that they usually kept behind the bar.
"John?" The tone of Jeff's voice made John's name question, "What is going on? Why'd ya tell Dom to come get me? And why the hell do you need the first aid kit?"
"Jeff," John laid a hand on the young man's shoulder. He knew how much Lisa already meant to Jeff "Lisa got hurt during her plane ride with Lachlan. I'm going out to the hanger now. I thought you'd want to come."
"Hurt? Hurt, how?" Jeff's heart skipped a beat. "Is she alright?"
"Come on, I'll explain in the truck."
Lachlan heard the roar of John's ute echoing off the walls of the hanger. He had left the main door open so John could pull in. He looked out the window of the office, relief flooding him as he watched the sheriff jump out of the vehicle and head towards him. He noticed Jeff following John.
"John, thank god. She still hasn't woke up." Lachlan ushered the two men inside.
"Bloody hell!" Jeff exclaimed as he rushed over to Lisa. His concerned gaze took in the paleness of her skin, the blood matting her hair. He turned accusing eyes at Lachlan, "Bugger all, Lachlan, you were supposed to take care of her."
"Jeff," John's voice was stern. "Now's not the time. Get out of the way so I can take a look at her."
Jeff backed off, standing next to Lachlan as they both watched John examine Lisa. He gently lifted up the cloth that Lachlan had been using as a bandage. He could see that the wound had almost stopped bleeding. It was a jagged tear but it wasn't deep. He didn't think that she would need stitches. Now all that was left was to get her to wake up. "Hand me the salts, Jeff" He held out a hand.
Jeff quickly located the smelling salts and handed them to John. He watched as John snapped the vial and waved it under Lisa's nose. He could swear that his heart stopped beating for a second when he realized that it hadn't worked. His new friend just laid there, still as death, obvious to the sharp smell wafting under her nose.
"Fuck!" John turned towards the two men standing behind him. "Lachlan, I think you better call an ambulance."
"Wait!" Jeff cried out at the soft moan that Lisa emitted. "I think she' coming around."
"Oh my," Lisa blinked rapidly to clear her vision. She looked up into the concerned faces of the three men looking down at her. "What happened?"
"You hit your head and passed out." John put a restraining hand on her shoulder when she tried to sit up. "Take it easy. I think you've lost some blood. You gave us one hell of a scare, little lady. I was about ready to call 911 when you didn't respond to the smelling salts."
"Oh, for some reason they don't work on me. I've fainted before and they just had to wait for me to come around." Lisa held up a blood stained hand. She looked at John and raised an eyebrow in inquiry.
"You've got a cut on your head. I'll clean it up here and then we'll go back to the Nest." John spoke to Jeff. "Jeff, could you get me some warm water and a towel or two."
"Sure, mate!" Jeff trotted off towards the small kitchen in the back of the hanger. John walked over to the first aid kit to assemble the supplies he would need.
Lachlan squatted down next to the couch. He tenderly sweep Lisa's bangs back out of the way. He ran a trembling hand down her cheek. "I'm glad you're okay. You scared the hell out of me, you know." His thumb caressed the side of her face. His indrawn breath was shaky. She still looked very pale to him. "I am so, so, very sorry."
Lisa placed a hand on the side of his face. "Lachlan, it's okay. It wasn't your fault." She pulled his head down and brushed her lips softly against his. "Really, it's okay."
Reaction was setting in now. Lachlan felt a burning desire to be close to Lisa, to assure himself that she was okay. He kissed her again, his lips brushing against hers gently at first then with increased pressure. He didn't force the kiss but he kept his lips firmly against hers. He deepened the kiss further, his tongue slipping into her mouth when she gasped softly. He explored the taste of her, his tongue dueling with hers. They broke apart with a guiltily start when John cleared his throat. Lisa face had plenty of color in it now.
"For crying out loud." John's chuckled. "In case you two hadn't noticed, you're both covered in blood. I don't think that now is the time for tonsil hockey."
For the first time, Lisa noticed the blood staining Lachlan's shirt. "Lachlan!" She ran her hands along his chest, seeking an injury, "You're bleeding. Where are you hurt?"
"It's not my blood, luv." He grabbed her hands and kissed one softly. "It's yours. Now sit back and let John have a look at ya."
Jeff came back in carrying a steaming bowl of water. He noticed that Lisa had more color in her face. He was starting to feel better himself. "Glad to see you looking a bit more alive." He handed the water to John and watched as John carefully tended to Lisa's injury.
Lachlan stood next to Jeff. They shared a smile of relief. Both men might have been surprised to discover they were thinking the same thing. //How'd she manage to mean so much so quickly?// Lachlan watched as John gently washed the blood away from Lisa's forehead. He could see the jagged edges of her wound and he noticed that the edges were already starting to bruise. //Damn, she comes to the Nest for a holiday and all she gets is bruises and blood.// He watched as a small amount of blood oozed out from the cut. He suddenly realized that his knees felt weak.
"Hey, mate, I think I better sit down." He gratefully sank into the chair that Jeff had pushed behind him.
Jeff had watched the color drain from Lachlan's face. //'Bout bloody time he realizes what he's done.// But Jeff knew that was unfair. Lachlan hadn't done anything wrong. It was just an accident. He was still surprised at his overly protective feeling towards Lisa.
Lisa winced as John pulled together the edges of her cut and sealed them with several butterfly bandages. She smiled at him as he sat back and surveyed his handiwork. "Now, I look like you after the Ranger's game. All I need is a bloody hockey jersey."
All three men laughed, perhaps a bit too much. But it was good to see Lisa smiling again and relief was making them all giddy.
"Come on, " John grasped her hand. "Let's see how you do upright." He watched her closely as she stood. He was reassured when she stood without weaving and her color stayed good. He pronounced her safe to travel back to the Crowe's Nest. But he told her firmly that she was to take it easy the rest of the day. Otherwise, there was no way he would let her drive home tomorrow.
Later, Lisa was comfortably ensconced on Jeff's couch. He was fussing over her and was trying to anticipate her every want. He was driving her crazy. She couldn't shift in her seat without him jumping up and inquiring if she needed anything. "Jeff, sit down. I'm fine." She was grateful for the knock on Jeff's door. Hopefully it was Rick, coming to distract him.
Her prayers were answered when the handsome waiter walked through the door. He was carrying a tray of steaming soup and a small loaf of bread. She thanked him as he set the tray on the small table next to her. She watched Jeff greet Rick with a quick kiss. It still caused just a little twinge to see them so affectionate. But it was nothing like the gut wrenching pain from yesterday. //Yep, things are definitely better.//
Another knock turned Lisa's attention back to the door. Jeff answered it and escorted Lachlan in. He grinned at the dark red rose clutched in Lachlan's hand. "For me, mate. Oh you shouldn't have."
"In your dreams, shirt lifter." Lachlan's response was quick. He turned towards Lisa and extended the rose to her. "For you, luv. And there are no thorns. I figured that you had bled enough today."
Lisa held the rose up to her nose, inhaling its wonderful fragrance. "Oh, Lachlan, it's beautiful. Thank you very much. But you shouldn't have." She motioned for him to sit next to her on the couch. Jeff took the rose from her and promised to put it in some water. He came back with it jauntily perched in a beer bottle. Lisa couldn't help but laugh.
"Lovely vase you have there, Mr. Mitchell."
Jeff dipped his head elegantly. "Why, thank you, It's one of our favorites. I'll be right back, I'm gonna walk Rick back to the Tavern." He grinned at Lisa's arched eyebrow. He could almost hear her voice, "I thought I said no matchmaking." "If fact, I may stay down for a stubbie if you don't mind staying here for two ticks, Lachlan."
"No, I don't mind at all, mate. I'd like to talk to Lisa anyway." Lachlan was relieved. When he came here, he had no idea how he was going to get Lisa alone to talk to her. Jeff had provided the perfect solution.
As soon as Jeff shut the door behind Rick and him, Lachlan turned to Lisa. He reached out and touched her hand gently, "Lisa, I've got a question for you."
Part Four
Lisa was confused by the serious look on Lachlan's face. "What is it?" She turned her hand around without thinking, lacing her fingers with his.
"Do ya ever wonder about the connections here? Notice how sometimes people come here for one person then end up with another?" Lachlan looked down at their joined hands. "What I'm trying to say here is, I know you came for Jeff. But do you think that you might connect with someone else?" He was taking a chance here but Lisa was leaving tomorrow and he wanted her to think about him while she was gone. Lachlan couldn't deny the attraction between them and the kiss in the hanger made him wonder if this was the woman he'd been waiting for.
"Lachlan, you've got to understand that I didn't come here the way most people do. I never meant to show up yesterday. I'm not unhappy I did but I never set out to come here, so I'm not sure that the whole connection thing applies to me." Lisa admitted only to herself that she was scared. Scared of this handsome pilot sitting next to her and all he could represent. Most of all, she was scared of the way he made her feel. She'd felt more alive with him, his lips pressed against hers in the hanger, than she had felt for a very long time. She remembered what it was like to fall head of heels in love and then have to watch it walk away. Ironically enough, it was another Air Force man that had taught her that cruel lesson. She wasn't sure she was ready to risk her heart again. Plus, she was still resolving her feeling for Jeff and didn't want to hurt Lachlan. //I'm more confused than I've ever been. I love this place but it could drive a girl crazy.// She looked up at Lachlan as he spoke.
"I know that you may not have intended to come here, luv. But you did and no one comes to the Crowe's Nest by acc..." He paused when she pressed two fingers to his lips.
"Stop." She couldn't help but chuckle, "Is that the company line around here? I've been here a little over 24 hours and I've heard at least four people say that exact line, John, Terry, Liz and now yo..." Her voice trailed of as Lachlan moved his lips against her fingers. She let out a tiny gasp as just the tip of his tongue slipped out to caress her finger tips. He drew the end of one slim digit into his mouth and nipped gently. Lisa's breathing and her heart rate sped up. Green eyes, wide with desire met smoldering aqua ones.
Lachlan released her finger and reached over to tangle his hand in her long dark hair. He pulled her towards him. Once again, their lips met. There was no tender brushing of lips this time but a hot kiss burning with passion. Tongues parried with each other and Lachlan used his hand on the back of Lisa's head to bring her even closer. She placed on hand on his shoulder and he could feel her fingernails digging in even though his shirt. She placed the other hand high up on his thigh for leverage and leaned towards him. Lachlan could feel a tightening in his groin. He scooted down on the couch, pulling Lisa until she lay across him.
Lisa moaned as Lachlan's soft mouth moved from her lips and worked its way across her face to the sensitive spot just below her ear. She tipped her head to the side to allow him greater access. She shivered as he gently sucked on her earlobe. She could feel his growing arousal. Their position matched the hard ridge of his erection to the throbbing spot between her legs. She found herself rubbing shamelessly against him seeking release. Lachlan recaptured her mouth and crushed her lips to his.
Lachlan felt like he was on fire. This woman was driving him crazy with desire. He slipped a hand into the gap at the waistband of her jeans. His large hand rested in the small of her back and he used it to press her more firmly against him.
"For crying out loud!" John's voice held barely suppressed laughter. He watched as they jumped apart like a set of guilty teenagers. "Jesus, Lachlan. Can't leave you alone with the girl for a second." He turned to the man following him in the room. "Jeff, you're going to have to chaperone your friend more closely. She keeps getting tangled up with flyboy here."
Lachlan could feel his face getting red. "Ease off, John." He looked over at Lisa's flushed face. Just once he'd like to spend some time with this woman without someone or something interrupting. He winked at her. She smiled back.
"Well, I just came to have a look at that cut, Lisa." John nodded his thanks to Lachlan as he sat in the spot that Lachlan vacated on the couch. John lifted up Lisa's bangs and gingerly touched the bandages, making sure they were intact. "No problems keeping them dry while you showered?" Lisa shook her head no. "Good. Keep them on for a few days until the edges of the cut start to heal together. Any headaches, nausea?" Another shake no by Lisa. "Great! I pronounce you fit to drive home tomorrow but if you notice any double vision or bad headaches, go the a clinic."
Lisa giggled, "Yes, Dr. Biebe."
John ruffled her hair slightly, "Brat". He stood. "Well, I'm outta here. I'm supposed to meet Tina in ten minutes. Take care, Lisa and if I don't see you before you go, have a safe trip home."
"Thanks, John. For everything." Lisa watched as the handsome sheriff nodded to Jeff and gave Lachlan a friendly pat on the shoulder before leaving.
"Well, mate." Jeff glanced at Lachlan. "Lisa and I were just going to watch a tape of last year's Australia Cup. You're welcome to join us. Lisa barracks for the All-Blacks so I need another Wallaby on my side."
"Wish I could, mate but I better shoot through. I never finished locking down the plane." Besides Lachlan needed sometime to sort out what had happened just now. He wondered if his desire for Lisa was a reaction to all that had happened today. He was sure he would never forget the sight of her pale face streaked with blood. Her green eyes wide with fear. Lachlan knelt next to Lisa. He looked deep into her eyes. "I am really sorry about what happened up there."
She brushed a lock of hair back from his forehead. "Lachlan, it's okay. It was an accident. I'm fine."
"Take care." His smile was tender. "I'll see you in the morning before you leave."
"Okay." She returned his smile with a soft one of her own.
Jeff walked Lachlan to the door. "She'll be right, mate. Lisa and I will be here. Come back if you'd like."
Lachlan gave Lisa one last look. "Ta, Jeff."
"Ooroo." Jeff shut the door behind Lachlan. He turned back to Lisa, a wicked grin on his face. "So this is how it its." He mimicked Lisa's voice, "No Jeff. I don't want you to play matchmaker, Jeff. I'm not ready, Jeff." He laughed at the look on her face. "Then I come in here and find you pashing off with one of my best mates."
Lisa was almost afraid to ask. "Pashing off?"
She was so good with australian slang that sometimes Jeff forgot that she wouldn't understand everything, "I believe you Yanks call it making out."
A blush stained Lisa's cheeks, "I was not 'making out' with Lachlan."
"Hell, luv, you were all over him." He laughed at her shocked expression.
She threw a pillow at him. "When's Rick get off, so he can occupy you for a while?"
"I told him I was going to be busy and I'd see him tomorrow." Jeff tried not to think about the slightly hurt look on Rick's face when he had told him that. Jeff had canceled their plans but he knew that Lisa would be gone tomorrow. He'd make it up to Rick then. "Seriously, Lisa, Lachlan is one of my best mates here. And I'm happy you two are getting on. Maybe not on my couch but...." He ducked when another pillow went whizzing by his head.
"Jeff, if you don't put the game on, I'm going back to my room." Lisa's voice held a good natured warning.
"Alright, alright! Let's get ya educated in the fine arts of rugby. We'll save footy for your next holiday." He suddenly thought of something. With all that has happened to her in the last two days, she might not want to see this place again. He looked at her. "You are coming back aren't you?"
"Of course. I'll be back on my next day off. It's a short week at work so I'll be back next Wednesday evening. And I can stay for five days."
"Ripper!" Jeff was surprised at how happy that made him. "Okay, let's get the game on."
The next day came way to soon for Lisa. She couldn't believe how sad she was to leave the Crowe's Nest. She'd been soaking wet in the rain, made a fool of herself in front of multiple people, had one set of shoes and a sweater wreaked and that didn't even count the physical trauma. She had bruises on her wrist and a cut on her forehead. But she'd also meet some of the most amazing people, traded in an infatuation for a fantastic friendship and been kissed senseless a couple times by a handsome pilot. She loved this place. But she couldn't stay, real life was calling her.
Lachlan had stopped by earlier and presented her with another dark red rose and another apology. She assured him that she really was okay and that when she returned she expected to finish their tour. Now she stood out by her car saying good-bye to Jeff.
"I really don't want to go." She blinked back tears. "I'm going to miss you."
Jeff tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. "I miss you already."
Lachlan stood at the window of the Tavern, drink a cup of tea and watching the exchange between the two friends outside. He looked on as Lisa wrapped her arms around Jeff in a tight hug. Lachlan sensed someone standing next to him. He looked over. Rick nodded at him. Lachlan turned his attention back to the couple outside. He felt a twinge of jealousy as Lisa brushed her lips across Jeff's and then smiled brightly at the plumber. Lachlan and Rick exchanged a concerned look. Lachlan heard Rick sigh. He watched as the young blonde waiter walked off. It was the first time Lachlan could remember Rick not smiling. //Looks like I'm not the only one having a hard go of it.// Lachlan took another long sip of his tea and watched as Lisa waved at Jeff and hopped into her vehicle. He made himself look away from the window.
He noticed John sitting in one of the booths reading the paper. Lachlan walked over to the booth and slid into the seat across from John. He didn't say a word. Soon, John looked up over the top of the paper.
"What's up, Lachlan?"
"Nothing." Lachlan paused for a moment. "Uh, John, can I ask you a question?"
"Shoot." John set the paper down and gave Lachlan his full attention.
Lachlan took a deep breath in and softly blew it out. "How do you know when you've found the right connection? Your soul mate?"
John gave it a moments thought. "Well, it varies, I suppose, from person to person. But I think it's when you can't imagine your world without her in it. You'd do just about anything to make her happy. When you get excited just knowing that you're gonna see her. And the world seems just a little darker when she's are gone. Why do ya ask?"
Lachlan stared out the window at the silver Honda that was pulling away. "No reason, just curious."
Part Five
Lisa was driving down the main road leading to the Nest. She could see the buildings in the distance. //Whole lot different way to show up than last time.// She had spent her days away from this place getting her personal life back together. She had talked to her friends. They had all agreed that things were going to be different between them but promised to always talk things out and not let them fester. That done, she had focused her attention on things that had happened at the Crowe's Nest during her last visit. She had resolved herself to the fact that all she would ever have with Jeff is a fantastic friendship.
And then there was Lachlan. What in the world was she going to do about that? While she was at the Nest, it was so easy to imagine that the handsome Aussie pilot would be interested in her. Easy to enjoy the mind numbing kisses. But when she left, the doubts started appearing. What would a young handsome man want with a thirty something divorcee? She didn't have a whole lot of dating experience. In fact, her ex-husband had been the only guy she dated before their marriage. After the divorce, there had been a few guys but nothing special, certainly no one that kissed like a dream and set her nerves on fire with just a touch. She was nervous to see Lachlan. Afraid that his kisses had been inspired by guilt. She reached up and touched the almost healed cut on her forehead. With her bangs swept low, it couldn't even be seen. //Well, maybe Lachlan will be off doing something and I won't even run into him.//
"No such luck," She said out loud as pulled her car into a parking space outside the Hotel. Lachlan was sitting on the porch steps. He stood up and starting walking towards her as she got out of the car.
"G'day, Lisa" He brushed soft lips against her cheek. "It's good to see you back."
Lisa smiled tentatively at him. Yep, that shiver of awareness was still there. In fact, it was even stronger now that she knew how he kissed, what it felt like to have his arms around her. She felt overwhelmed. Lisa looked around, "Where's Jeff?"
Lachlan suppressed a twinge of annoyance. She hadn't even said hello, just asked where Jeff was. Lisa hadn't been the only one doing some evaluating during her absence from the Nest. Lachlan had been thinking too. Replaying what John had said about how to know if you've found your connection. Lachlan wasn't a hundred percent positive but he was almost sure that Lisa was the one for him. He had talked to Jeff Mitchell about it. Jeff had given him his support and promised to do his best to throw Lachlan and Lisa together. And that support had started now. Jeff had gone into town with Rick for a quiet lunch, leaving Lachlan to await Lisa's arrival. Lachlan was ready to convince her that they were meant to be together even if he had to climb over the top of Jeff Mitchell to get to her.
"Jeff and Rick went into town. I told him that I'd help you get settled." Lachlan extended a hand to her. "How about some lunch? You're probably ready to eat a horse and chase the jockey too after your long trip."
"'Eat the horse and chase the jockey too'" Lisa couldn't help but laugh. "Like I've said before, you aussies sure have strange expressions."
Lachlan was happy to see her finally smiling at him. "We'll leave your luggage in the ute and get some lunch first." He took her hand and led her to the Tavern. They sat down in the corner booth and ordered lunch from Andy. Lisa noticed that Andy was looking a little glum. After he walked away from the table, she turned to Lachlan.
"What's going on with Andy?" He just didn't seem to be the cheery guy she had met last time. "He looks like hell."
"Not really sure. He was all smiles at the beginning of the week but now he's down. He's been talking alot with Jeff so maybe he knows."
Lisa and Lachlan chatted while they ate lunch. Lachlan was relieved to see that she was slowly started to warm up to him again. She wasn't as open with him as she was with Jeff but Lachlan was confident that it would only take time. They were sitting at the table with Lachlan drinking the last of his tea while Lisa finished a piece of cheesecake.
"That's it." Lisa pushed back the plate with the remaining half of the dessert on it. "I can't eat another bite." She leaned back in her chair. She blew her bangs out of her eyes with a quick breath. "I'm stuffed."
The smile faded from Lachlan's face. He reached across the table and brushed her hair back. Lisa looked at him, one eyebrow arched in inquiry.
"What?"
"Just checking to see how your cut looks? I'm really sorry about that. It looks like it might scar." Lachlan felt sick. Every time she looked in the mirror, she would have a reminder of a trip that ended with her bleeding and unconscious.
Lisa could see that Lachlan was still beating himself up about the accident. She reached over and covered his hand with her own. "Lachlan?" She waited until he was looking at her. "It's okay. I'm fine and at worst I'll have a little white line. Please stop being so hard on yourself."
Lachlan only wished it was that easy. He wouldn't soon forget the sight of his white shirt stained with her blood. He shook his head to clear the memories. "Come on. Let's go get your baggage."
They walked back outside. Lachlan held out his hand. "Keys? I'll get your luggage. Is it in the boot?"
She handed the keys to Lachlan, showing him how the trunk release worked. He pulled out her suitcase and gave her a bit of good natured teasing about the Mickey Mouse embroidered on the top. She followed him into the Hotel. Lisa stopped at the desk, picked up the key to her room from a blushing Arthur and led Lachlan upstairs.
Lachlan admitted to himself that he was nervous. Inside Lisa's room there was a gift for her, something he had saw in a little art gallery in town. He had a feeling that she would like it. //I hope I'm not wrong.// His heartbeat sped up as she opened the door.
Lisa looked around her room. It was still the same small corner room that she had the last time she was here. Perfect for her without being fussy. It was amazing how such a simple room could feel so much like home. Her eyes swept the walls and paused. Her mouth dropped open. There hanging on the wall was a oil painting. The paint was laid on very thick with alot of texture. One had to study it for awhile to see within the heavy swirls of black, gray, blue, white and cream paint. But with enough perusal, the shape of an newborn Angus calf lying in the snow with the shadow of his mother standing behind him could be seen. She turned wide eyes on Lachlan.
"Do you like it?" Lachlan was starting to get worried. She was just standing there speechless, eyes darting between him and the painting. "Well? Say something, anything? Say you like it, say you don't but say something."
"That's..that's a Theodore Waddell." She could hardly get the words out. "It's an original oil painting, not a repo."
Lachlan finally started to breath easier. "I know."
"He's from my home state."
"I know, luv." Lachlan couldn't contain his grin. "That's why I bought it. I thought you might like a little Montana while you are here."
"You bought this," she laid a hand on her heart, "for me?"
Lachlan merely nodded. His smile matched hers as she hurled herself into his arms. He wrapped his arms around her tightly and returned her hug.
"I don't know what to say." She pulled back a little to look at him. "He's the only artist whose work I really wanted to own." She gave him a quick kiss. "Thank you so much."
Now, Lachlan had her where he wanted her and that quick buzz on the lips wasn't going to do it. He slid a hand up into her hair and coaxed her forward until their lips met again. He kissed her upper lip first, drawing in gently into his mouth. Then he sucked on her bottom lip. When she moaned softy, he slipped his tongue inside. She tasted of cheesecake and soda. He pulled her tighter against him.
Lisa was standing on her tiptoes, her body pressed firmly against him. She ended the kiss to draw in a ragged breath. Looking into his eyes, she whispered in a shaky voice, "I almost had myself talked out of you. How'd you manage to change my mind so fast?"
Lachlan gently stroked the side of her face with the back of his hand. He flipped his hand over and cupped her cheek. His voice was no less shaky, "Because we are supposed to be."
"Supposed to be what?"
"We will figure that out as we go along." Lachlan softly brushed his lips against hers. "I don't intend to rush this, Lisa. I want to take the time to really get to know you, for you to really get to know me. And then we'll decide what happens next."
"That sounds perfect" She laid her head on his shoulder and just stood in his embrace. It felt good just to hold and be held by someone. They stood there for a long time, arms clasped around each other. They reluctantly parted when a sharp rap sounded on the door.
"Bloody hell!" Lachlan swore under his breath. //Why is it every time I get my arms around this woman, someone interrupts// He glanced at the door. "Go away!", he yelled. Lachlan looked at Lisa and ignored the knocking on the door.
"No can do, mate!" Jeff Mitchell's voice came through the door. "You've got my long lost buddy in there."
Lisa's eyes lit up. "Jeff!!" She pulled out of Lachlan's embrace to head towards the door. A hand on her arm stopped her. She looked at Lachlan.
"You and me are going to the beach tomorrow, alone. Where no one can interrupt. This is about to drive me mental."
"Okay, deal." Lisa couldn't help but giggle at Lachlan's annoyed expression. She caressed his cheek softly, "Now can I answer the door?" She turned towards the insistent knocking. "I'm coming. I'm coming."
Lisa opened the door and Lachlan watched her face light up. "Buddy!" She pulled Jeff inside and enveloped him a tight hug. He returned it with equal enthusiasm. She laughed at him and kissed him on the cheek. "How dare you not be here to meet me." She tried to sound stern and failed.
"Ah, luv. It's good to see you back." He returned her kiss with one of his own. "Sorry about not meeting you but Rick and I had a date. But I left you in the capable hands of our best pilot."
Lisa looked over her shoulder at Lachlan. She winked at him. "Yes, you did. Come here, let me show you the painting Lachlan bought me." She dragged him by the hand over to the oil painting. "Isn't it wonderful?"
"Looks like a bunch of globs of paint to me, luv." Jeff teased as he stood next to it, his nose practically touching the thick layers of paint.
Lisa playfully punched Jeff on the arm. "Barbarian. You're standing too close. Get back here." She pulled him back a few feet. Then she walked back to the painting. With a sweep of her hand, she outline the shape of the calf's body. "See here's the calf and behind it, that shadow is the mother standing guard."
"Why is there so much white?"
"Because it's a spring calf. You know, we have lots of snow in Montana. Calves are usually born before the last snow of the year. Especially the early spring calves. So the mothers have to stand over the calves to keep the snow off. And this painting shows one of those scenes. Every time I look at it, I'll think about the wonderful changing weather of Montana."
"Every time I look at it, all I'll think about is how much a bloke can make with some swirls of paint."
"Argghh!" Lisa ran over to Jeff. She stood toe to toe with him, looking slightly indignant. "You are impossible. It's the most fantastic piece of art work I've ever owned."
"I'm only teasing, Lisa." Jeff out an arm around her and turned her back towards the painting. "It's bonzer. I told Lachlan that when he found it."
Lisa smiled at Lachlan. "Well, then, he has great taste in artwork."
Lachlan had stood back, watching the interaction between the two friends. He tried not to notice how much more comfortable and relaxed Lisa was when Jeff was around. He returned her smile with a tight one of his own. He vowed to himself that by tomorrow night, after their day at the beach, he would have her as relaxed around him as she was around Jeff. He turned at another knock on the door. "I'll answer it." //Jesus, this place is busier than Sydney Harbour.//
"Thanks, Lachlan."
Lachlan opened the door and greeted John Biebe. "G'day, John."
"Lachlan, I was hoping you were still up here. Peaches wanted me to remind you that you promised to take a couple of the new arrivals out for a flight today."
"Shit! That's right." Lachlan turned to Lisa. "I'm sorry. I really do have to go. I agreed to do this before I knew you were coming." Glancing at Jeff and John, Lachlan made a quick decision. He grabbed Lisa's upper arms and pulled her towards him. He gave her a hard kiss of possession. His tongue swept in for a quick taste when she gasped in surprise. They were both breathing fast when they parted. "I'll see ya later."
"Bye" Lisa whispered and watched as he shut the door behind him. She raised a trembling hand to her tingling lips.
"Well, well, well." Jeff walked up behind her and squeezed her shoulder. "Pashing again, buddy" He whispered in her ear. He laughed at the blush that crept up her neck to stain her cheeks. She got even more red when she realized that John was snickering in the background. To cover her embarrassment, she turned to annoyance.
"I think that is about enough out of both of you." She glared at John, "What do you want?"
He fought back a smirk and held his hands up in a gesture of surrender. "Just came by to deliver a message for Lachlan. And to see how the cut on your forehead healed."
"It's healing just fine, thank you." She lifted up her bangs to show John the line red line. He leaned in for a closer inspection.
"Great," John smiled at her, "Well, I'll just be heading back downstairs."
"Hey, John!" Lisa stopped him as he reached for the door.
"Yeah?"
"When's your next hockey game?" She grinned at Jeff. He rolled his eyes at her.
"Sunday afternoon, why?"
"Mind if Jeff and I come and watch it?" She could barely hold back a giggle at Jeff's expression.
"Sure, I'd love it." John looked at Jeff, "Jeff, you've never came to a game before, what's up?"
Jeff threw an arm affectionately around Lisa's shoulders. "My buddy here, thinks I need to expand my sport's knowledge."
"I think she is right." John was happy to have anyone that visited come to the arena. It reminded him of the Saturday games in Mystery, where a town turned out to support the players. Since it was more of a skirmish than a game, every good play regardless of who made it was cheered for enthusiastically by the crowd. Every goal was a victory and nobody went home a loser. "Just remember to bring a sweater. You footy players aren't used to the cold."
"Get out of here, John." Jeff gave him a shove out the door. He turned back just in time to catch Lisa smothering a yawn. "You're stuffed, aren't ya?"
"Stuffed? No."
Jeff laughed at the confused look on her face. "Stuffed is tired, luv. Did you leave right after work?"
Lisa yawned again. "No I took a little nap before I left."
Jeff grabbed her shoulders and turned her towards the bed. "Looks like you need another one." He forced her to lay down and tucked a blanket around her. He brushed his lips against her cheek. She smiled sleepily at him. "Get some sleep.. I'll come back later and get ya."
"Jeff?" Lisa stopped him with his hand on the door. "Don't let me sleep too long. I don't want to miss anything."
"You won't, luv. Ooroo." He closed the door quietly behind him.
Lisa snuggled down into the warm covers, her eyelids drooping. It was so nice to be here.
Lachlan was frustrated. He usually didn't mind taking people up in his plane for a ride but today his heart wasn't in it. He had found himself distracted by thoughts of Lisa. The flight had taken longer than normal with the women wanting him to fly over some of the farthest corners of the Nest. He had ended up spending several hours in the air. Hours that he would have much rather spent with Lisa. Now it was late, past seven o'clock. He had hoped to have dinner with her but he wasn't counting on it now. He looked around the Tavern. Several people were there, eating or sipping drinks but he couldn't see the person he was looking for. Spotting Rick at the bar, Lachlan walked over.
"Hi Lach," Rick greeted him "Can I get you a beer?"
"No thanks, mate. Have you seen Lisa around?"
Rick sighed, "Yep. She's in Jeff's room. Where else would she be?"
"Figures." Lachlan sat down on a bar
stool. "Maybe I will have that beer after all,
mate."
Part Six
Rick reached under the bar and pulled out a beer for Lachlan. On impulse, he grabbed one for himself. Setting both on the bar, he efficiently opened the tops with a practiced twist of his wrist. "Glass?"
"No thanks, mate. I'll just take it as it comes." Lachlan grabbed the bottle and took a long swig. "It's stupid, isn't? Being jealous."
"Yep." Rick took a drink of his own beer. "But damn easy to do. They're together almost every waking moment."
"Fair dinkum." Lachlan raised his bottle in a toast. "I'm going to practically have to kidnap her tomorrow for a day with her."
Rick tapped his bottle to Lachlan's. He motioned Johnny over to him. "You doing anything tonight, Johnny?"
Johnny shook his head. "Nope, why?"
"Take over the rest of my shift for me, will ya? I've only got an hour left." Rick smiled when Johnny agreed. He walked around the bar, casually grabbing a bottle of tequila and a couple of shot glasses. He sat down next to Lachlan and poured a a pair of shots.
Rick raised his glass. "A toast to the ones we love and the friends that take up all their time."
"Cheers, mate."
Lisa was awakened by the shrill ring of the alarm clock. She rolled over and squinted at it. "Why in the world would I set my alarm for 8:30? I'm on vacation." She reached over and shut it off. She was almost asleep again when a thought skirted across her mind. She sat bolt upright in bed. She was meeting Lachlan for a day at the beach. She looked at the clock again. It was 8:45! Only forty-five minutes to get ready and downstairs to wait for him. Good thing she wasn't much of a breakfast person.
A quick shower was followed by an inventory on her clothing choices. //Cripes, I'm from Montana. I don't have beach wear.// She finally settled on a swimsuit covered by a pair of shorts and a button down shirt tied at the waist. A pair of sandals completed the ensemble. She glanced at her watch. Still had fifteen more minutes. Just enough time to jet down to the Tavern for a diet Pepsi to start the day. She'd have to talk to Peaches about getting a small refrigerator for her room. Lisa used Pepsi like most people used coffee to get herself jump started in the morning.
At 9:15 there wasn't many people in the Tavern. Johnny was behind the bar washing glasses when Lisa walked up. She sat on a bar stool and ordered a soda. She waved at Zack and Colin who were playing a game of pool. She swung her sandal on the tip of her toes as she watched the two men. Her attention was focused on Colin making a particularly hard shot when she felt someone caress her ankle. She turned, expecting to see Jeff or Lachlan. Her eyes widened at the man standing next to her. He was wearing white shorts, black combat boots and a sleeveless shirt that revealed the tattoos that started at his hand and ended far up on his neck. He was tracing the design on Lisa's ankle with a single finger.
"Nice ink." Hando commented. He liked the gold celtic cross that ran from the inside of Lisa's ankle halfway up her calf about 5 inches. Shading gave it depth and the careful placement of white ink gave it the illusion of sparkle. "Got any more?"
Lisa nodded. Turning the other way, she showed him the purple and green paw prints on the outside of the same leg. He wrinkled his nose. "Stupid! The cross is better." He grabbed her leg and turned it back. He leaned closer for a better look.
"Hando!!" Lachlan's shouted from across the Tavern. "Get the hell away from her." He strode towards them. His temper was rising as he noticed that Hando had not released Lisa's leg.
Hando stood slowly and took his time letting go of Lisa. He folded his arms across his chest and stared belligerently at Lachlan. "Easy, mate." He sneered. "I was just admiring your girlfriend's ink. From the looks of it, her and I might share the same ideals."
Lisa finally found her voice, "What the hell!?! Listen here, I got this long before some stupid punk-ass skinheads decided to make it a symbol of their twisted morals." She hopped off the bar stool and glared at Hando. She was too angry to be frightened. "Let me assure you, there are no ideals that we could possibly share." She used a finger to jab him in the chest to make her point.
Hando's eyes narrowed. No one poked at him and got away with it. One hand fisted. "Listen, bitch..."
"Hando!" Maximus' voice was quiet but the authority in it made sound like a shout. He was standing at the door. All heads turned his way. "I believe you and I have some training to do."
Giving Lisa and Lachlan one more icy glare, Hando turned and walked out the door with Maximus.
Lisa sat down hard on the barstool. "Tell me I did not just pick a fight with a skinhead?" Her voice was shaky.
"Fair dinkum, you did." Lachlan reminded himself to thank Maximus later for his impeccable timing. "Now, Hando's been changing some since he starting hanging out with Max. But honey, I still don't think its a good idea to refer to skinheads as stupid punk-ass when he is around. Just try to steer clear of him. Okay, luv?"
Lisa lifted her soda to her mouth with trembling hands. "Good idea." She took a long drink. Meeting Lachlan's eyes, she suddenly burst into laughter. She stifled it with her hand. "Oh my, I'm sorry. I'm not sure why I'm laughing." She tried in vain to hold back another giggle.
Lachlan could feel his own smile widening. "Probably reaction to standing toe to toe with Hando and telling him he has twisted morals. All the while living to tell the tale." Lachlan winced slightly at the crack of a pool balls in the background.
His gesture didn't go unnoticed by Lisa. She looked at him closer. His eyes were a faintly blood shot and he was squinting painfully at the bright light steaming in from the windows. "You look like crap. Are you okay?"
Lachlan dismissed her concerns with a wave of his hand. "I'm fine. Just up late last night with a friend. It's nothing that a little fresh air won't fix." He grabbed her hand, "Come on, let's go to the beach."
Lachlan could feel Lisa's arms wrap tighter around him as he turned onto the dirt road that led to his destination. It had taken some serious talking to get her on his petrol pony in the first place. He wouldn't be surprised to see nail marks in his side, she was holding on so tight. He laughed and shifted slightly to look at her.
"Eyes on the road, buddy!" Lisa yelled at him. She was nervous enough riding on the back of a motorcycle without having the driver looking back at her. Working in a hospital had demonstrated to her the ways a person can mess up their bodies riding a motorcycle. She wasn't about to join that club. She gave a sigh of relief when Lachlan pulled to a stop.
"Wasn't that bonzer?" Lachlan helped her off the motorcycle and reached into the side packs to gather up their picnic supplies. He giggled when she shook her head, no. "Come on, the wind rushing through your hair, your arms wrapped tightly around a handsome pilot, what more could a girl ask for?"
"How about four tires, sides, a roof and a V-6 engine under the hood?" She grinned at him mischievously. Now that the ride was over she could admit that it was kinda fun. Not something she'd like to do everyday but enjoyable none the less.
Lachlan put a hand over his heart and tried for a wounded expression. He failed miserably because he couldn't keep the sparkle out of his eyes and the laughter out of his voice. "Alrighty then. I'll have Jeeves send for the limousine to take madam back to the mansion when we are finished." He tried to mimic a stuffy English accent.
"You are nuts," Lisa smiled at him. "Come on, let's go." She grabbed part of the stuff he had in his hands and walked down the path to the beach. She stopped as she rounded the corner. She was amazed at the beauty before her. The sand around the water was a crystalline white. It was soft beneath her feet. The water was a deep dark blue and almost as still as glass. Tiny ripples spread out from the center. Lisa walked forward and dropped the supplies in the sand. Slipping off her sandals, she gingerly touched the water with her toe. Her mouth dropped with astonishment at the warmth. She turned questioning eyes towards the man standing behind her. "How?"
Lachlan grinned at her. "It's a thermal pool. It's warm, not salt water. It's deep enough to swim in and well, I thought you might like it." He wasn't going admit to her that after she had left last week, he had read everything he could find about Montana. In his reading, he discovered that Montana had lots of "hot pots" and that many of the locals used them like a jacuzzi. He figured that she might like to come to the thermal pool that they had at the Nest.
"I love it. It's perfect. Thank you so much for bringing me here." Lisa put her arms around Lachlan and hugged him tight.
He returned her embrace and slid his lips gently across hers. Her mouth softened under his. He kept the kiss gentle and non threatening. He wasn't going to rush this. They had all day. He kissed her on the forehead and stepped back. "So what would you like to do first?"
Lisa's thoughts raced. //Get you back against me and kiss you senseless. Explore the body you've got under that light blue shirt and shorts.// But to Lachlan, she just smiled and said, "How about we play in the water for a bit then have lunch?'
"Sounds perfect," Lachlan watched as Lisa turned her back on him and slipped off her shirt. He could see the top of her swimsuit looked almost like one of those sports bra thingys women were always wearing now days. He swallowed hard as she slid her shorts down her legs to reveal the bottom of her suit. It was high cut, making her long legs seem even longer. She turned around and blushed when she caught him staring.
Lachlan could feel his own cheeks getting pink. "Uh, sorry to stare but darlin', you are beautiful. You hide some serious curves under all those loose fitting clothes."
Lisa blushed more. "I used to weigh a lot more than I do now and I guess I still dress to hide. Force of habit, I guess. And I'm still not used to the stares I get if I wear something clingy and..." Her voice trailed off. She giggled a little, "I'm babbling again. I'm sorry, I'll just say thank you for the compliment and leave it at that."
"No worries, luv. I'm glad you don't wear clingy stuff around here." He ran a caressing hand down her face, under her ear and treaded his finger into the loose hair at her nape. He pulled her forward until their lips were inches apart. He looked deeply into her eyes and whispered. "That way I'm the only one that knows about these curves." Curves that he outlined with his other hand. He started at her hip and slip his hand upward across the bare strip of flesh and stopped just under her breast. He watched her eyes widen and her pupils dilate with desire. //So much for slow, Curry.// He brushed his lips against hers and released her.
Lisa was breathing hard. It was everything she could do not the grab Lachlan and pull him back against her. But she had never been that bold and probably never would. But she felt better noticing that his breathing was no slower than hers. "Wow."
Lachlan grinned at her. "Let's go swimming, luv'" He took off his shirt, reveling a tanned, smooth chest. He grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the water.
They spent over an hour in the water, alternating between swimming, water fights and just floating around. Finally Lisa admitted that she had enough. The warm water had sapped her strength and she was ready for some lounging on the beach. She offered to help Lachlan set up lunch but he had waved off her help. So she laid down on the towel that he had spread out for her and closed her eyes. She could feel the suns rays shining down on her, warming her skin. She smiled, her eyes still closed, when a shadow passed over her. "Hello, Lachlan"
"G'day, luv. Are you ready for some lunch?"
Lisa stretched her arms above her and slowly opened her eyes. She smiled up at the man standing above her. He had slipped back on his shirt but left it unbuttoned. His wet hair was swept back from his handsome face. H was grinning at her. A dimple creased his cheek. //Funny, I've never noticed that before.// Lisa put her hand in his and allowed him to pull her upright. She followed him as he led her to the food he had laid out.
They sat cross-legged on the blanket enjoying the wonderful food and each other's company. Conversation flowed easily. They talked about all sorts of things, just using the time to get to know each other better. Lisa told Lachlan how she had basically fallen into a job which she now loved. He marveled at her ability to work with premature babies and not become cynical. Lisa told him stories about growing up in Montana and made him laugh at the stereotypes some people had about Montanans. They worked together packing up the remains of their meal. Then they relaxed, Lachlan drinking a beer while Lisa sipped on a hard lemonade.
Using a boulder as a backrest, Lisa leaned back. Before she could guess what Lachlan was up to, he was laying at right angles to her, his head resting in her lap. He closed his eyes.
"Do you mind me using you as a pillow?" His smile told her he was well aware that he was asking permission for something he had already done.
"No" Although, Lisa had to admit it was rather intimate. His head lay nestled on her thigh and she could feel the heat from his broad shoulders warm her hip. A warmth that was spreading to other parts of her body. "Tell me about your home in Australia."
Lachlan opened one eye, "Pillows shouldn't talk"
Lisa laughed, "Well this one does. Now tell me about Australia"
Lachlan sighed in mock resignation. He told Lisa about his home in Australia What it was like living on the edge of the outback on a station. He had loved his home, his family and his horses but had always dreamed of flying. He described for her, his first flight, the feelings of exhilaration as the plane had left the ground. Right then, he had known that he was meant to be a pilot. He admitted with a slight blush that he had dreamt as a child that he was a bird, trapped forever in the body of a little boy. Flying a plane was the closest he would get to ever being free.
Lisa's eyes were shining as she stared down at him. "Oh my, Lachlan," her voice was husky, "that is amazing. I can understand why you love to fly." She reached a hand under his open shirt and laid it on his chest, covering his heart. "Maybe its true, somewhere inside you is the heart of a bird."
Lachlan lowered his eyes and looked at the hand pressed against his bare skin. He was so glad that she hadn't laughed at him. He had never shared that with anyone before but it just seemed right to tell her. He covered her hand with his own and looked up at her. "Thank you for understanding, for not laughing."
"Oh, Lachlan, I would never laugh. I think its beautiful." She leaned down and kissed him tenderly. "Thank you for sharing it with me. I'm glad I'm here with you.
"I'm glad you are here, too." Lachlan let his eyes drift shut, lulled by the sound of the water and the warmth, both physical and mental of the woman beside him. Before he even realized it, he had fallen asleep.
Lisa sat there for a long time staring down at the man sleeping on her lap. When his face was relaxed and his dark curls tumbled across his forehead, he looked boyishly handsome and cuddly. She gently swept his hair back with her fingertips. It would be so easy to fall in love with him. She let her own eyes drift shut as she rested a hand on his shoulder.
Lisa knew she was dreaming because you can't be one minute sitting on the beach and the next minute be over a deep canyon. She was standing in the middle of one of those long suspension bridges. One one side, the side she had came from, was Jeff. The bridge on that side was perfect, each board in place. She knew she would be safe walking back that way. It would be so easy to turn and walk back to him. But on the other side was Lachlan. He had his hand outstretched to her, beckoning her to come across. He was promising her that he could take her to places she had never been if she just joined him on the other side. But the bridge over to him had gaps in the boards and it would require a leap of faith to make it. She looked back at Jeff then at Lachlan. She was so confused, unsure of which way to go. She took a step.
Lachlan woke abruptly when Lisa jerked her legs, dumping his head off her lap onto the blanket. She was immediately contrite, apologizing for disturbing him. He assured her it was okay but she had a panicked look on her face. He rolled over and sat up. "Lisa, what's wrong?"
"Nothing." She wouldn't meet his eyes, "I must have fallen asleep too. I was dreaming and my leg jerked. I'm sorry."
"No worries. I'm none the worse for the wear." He noticed that Lisa was looking at her watch. "You have some place to go, luv."
"Well, I'm suppose to meet Jeff to watch some footy tonight." She looked up when she heard Lachlan sigh. "But it's really just a cover to get Jennifer back. Something's wrong between her and Andy. She won't tell me what it was but I'm afraid it's really bad."
Lachlan hid his annoyance at the mention, once again, of Jeff Mitchell. He knew it was stupid to be jealous of Jeff. There was nothing but friendship between Jeff and Lisa. He counted Jeff among his best mates. He supposed that he should be happy that they got to spend most of the day together without interruptions.
"I really should get back so I can shower and change before Jennifer gets here." Lisa kissed Lachlan tenderly. "I'm sorry that we can't stay here longer. If it wasn't for this business with Jennifer, I'd stay here with you all evening. I really enjoyed it."
That went a long way towards making Lachlan feel better. He squeezed her hand tightly. "Mind if I join you for the footy match?"
"I'd love it!" Together with two of her favorite guys, she couldn't think of anything better. She helped Lachlan pack up the supplies and walked hand in hand with him back to the motorcycle. She hopped on behind, no less frightened now than she was the first time. Wrapping her arms tightly around him, she closed her eyes and rested her head on his back. She was grateful when they finally pulled up to the Crowe's Nest.
They got off the bike, Lachlan grabbed the stuff that needed to go back to the Tavern. Lisa stood facing him. She lifted a hand to caress his face. He caught it and placed a kiss in her palm. His smile was sweet. "Thank you, Lisa for a truly lovely day."
Lisa stood on her toes and pressed her lips to his. She ran her tongue along the seam of his lips until he opened them slightly. Her tongue lightly teased the sensitive corners of his mouth until he moaned. He dropped the stuff he was holding and raised one hand up to tangle with her hair. The other hand snaked around her waist to press her more firmly against him. He deepened the kiss, his tongue sliding along her teeth. They were both panting when they finally pulled apart.
"I've said it before but wow." Her smile was dazzling. "Lachlan Curry, I could get used to you kissing me like that."
His own smile was just a big, "Good because I could get used to kissing you like that." He gently turned her around to face the Hotel. "Now go get ready for the game, luv. I'll see ya there. Ooroo."
"Ooroo." She said as she watched him walk off. He was whistling slightly off key and she could swear he was strutting. She chuckled and walked towards the Hotel.
It was hours later when Lisa was finally tucked into her bed for the night. Her mind was still reeling for all that had happened during this day. After Lachlan and her had parted, she had rushed up to her room, showered quickly and dashed over to Jeff's room. They had watched a recorded footy game with Jeff trying to teach both her and Jennifer the rules. Lisa had finally surrendered, admitting that it was just fine to watch a game and have no idea what was going on. A couple of the other Australian guys had shown up and Lisa got a change to visit with Colin and Johnny.
Jeff had filled her and Lachlan in on the trouble between Andy and Jennifer. The three of them had plotted a way to get them back together. Lisa had to chuckle at that. She was so adamant that Jeff not play matchmaker but she was happy to do it to someone else. Lachlan was going to take Jennifer out for a ride tomorrow in the countryside while Lisa, Jeff and probably a reluctant Andy arranged a romantic make-up dinner.
Since Jeff was going to sub for Andy at the Tavern, Lachlan had asked her to come over to his room for dinner the next evening. Nothing flash, he had said. Just a chance to spend some more time together. Lisa had happily agreed. The toe curling goodnight kiss he had given at her door had sealed the bargain. Lisa sighed as she remembered how he felt holding her tight. Yep, it would be really easy to fall for a guy like that.
A ghost of a smile stayed on her lips as she drifted off to sleep.
Part Seven
Lisa was standing on a step ladder in Jennifer's room with Jeff Mitchell on one next to her. She was holding a piece of shimmering silver material while Jeff was carefully tacking it to the wall. It flowed down from the ceiling to pool softly on the floor. They had already covered the other three walls, this one was the only one left.
"Here's the deal, Lisa." Jeff pounded a short tack through the material and into the wall. He sure hoped Peaches forgave them for this. It was all in the name of romance so maybe she would. He gestured with the hammer he was using. "Lachlan is a nice bloke. I don't see what your problem is."
Lisa was beginning to regret sharing her confusion about Lachlan with Jeff. She moved her hand aside so he could place the last fastener. "My problem is that he makes me feel things I haven't felt in a very long time. How do I know that it's real? Cripes, Jeff, this place is like a dream anyway, how am I supposed to believe that someone like Lachlan would be interested in me?"
Jeff just shook his head. "Lachlan's just a regular bloke like the rest of us. Just because he came from a movie doesn't mean he doesn't feel the same things as everyone else. Why wouldn't he like you? You're nice enough, sweet and pretty, what's not to like? You know what I think?"
Lisa looked at him, "What?"
"I think you ought to just bang him and get it over with. That's what all this is--sexual tension." He wiggled his eyebrows at her.
"Crikey, Jeff, you are horrible!" She gave him a push that sent him and the ladder toppling over. It was a testament to Jeff that he didn't grab the fabric on the way down. He landed with a thud.
"Shit, Lisa" He rubbed his hip where it had impacted with the floor. "I was just kidding." Lisa raised one eyebrow. "Alright, I wasn't kidding. I do think that you ought to just do the nasty already."
Lisa stood on her step ladder, hands on her hips and glared down at him. "Some of us like to get to know a person before they become intimate."
Luckily for both of them, Andy came in at that moment. He spun around, looking at the room. "It looks bonzer. Just how I imagined it. I don't know how to thank you."
Jeff righted the ladder and folded it up. "No worries, mate. It was our pleasure." He held out a hand to help Lisa down from her ladder and then folded it up also. He set them outside the door to Jennifer's room.
Lisa leaned over and kissed Andy on the cheek. "Happy to help you win her back, Andy." She hid her grin as he blushed. "All we've got left to do is set up the candles. The rose petals are in the fridge to keep them fresh. You can scatter them about just before Jennifer get back."
Lisa quickly set out candles of all shapes and sizes through out the room. Jeff gathered up the supplies that he had brought with him. He had brought his tool belt along so he buckled that back around his waist and turned to Lisa.
She was giving Andy last minute instructions. "Now Rick will bring up the wine about 5:30 so you can get it chilling. Did you get the dress you were thinking of for Jennifer?" Andy lifted the box that was tucked under his arm. "Good, now Lachlan is supposed to bring her back around six so you better be dressed before then. And don't forget..." She paused when Jeff squeezed her arm. "What?"
"Lisa, I think he can handle it from here. Quit nagging the bloke." Jeff couldn't help but laugh. He would swear that Lisa was almost as nervous as Andy.
"I'm not nagging. I just want everything to be right." She glared at Jeff as he started to pull her from the room. "I'm not done."
"Yes, you are. Now, come on." He waved at Andy. "See ya later, mate. Good luck!"
"Ta, Jeff. Thanks, Lisa. I really appreciate it." Andy chuckled as Jeff dragged Lisa out the door.
Lisa helped Jeff carry stuff back to the store room. They stopped for a drink at the Tavern. Jeff wanted to eat before he went on shift so Lisa stayed to keep him company. The Tavern was almost empty so Jeff flirted shamelessly with Rick as he took their order. Lisa couldn't help but smile at the heated glances the two men exchanged. It might not be her and Lachlan but someone was going to get a little action tonight. She pinched Jeff playfully on the arm. "You're a tomcat, you know that?"
He jerked his head around, distracted from watching Rick walk away. "I am not. You are just jealous that I'm going to get some tonight."
"Lay off it, Jeff." She glared at him with mock indignation. Changing the subject, she said, "So how do you suppose it will go with Jennifer and Andy? He's such a sweet guy. I can't believe how romantic he is. He had great ideas for decorating Jennifer's room."
"He's in love with her." Jeff smiled at Lisa's wistful expression. "Blokes do some crazy things when they are in love."
When Rick brought Jeff's food back, Lisa quizzed him on a wine to bring along to dinner with Lachlan. Rick confessed that he had never seen Lachlan drink wine unless he was forced to. He recommended that Lisa bring along some of Lachlan's favorite beer instead. She placed a order for three bottles of beer and three bottles of Mike's Hard Lemonade.
A short time later, Lisa was standing nervously at Lachlan's door. She raised her hand to knock just as Lachlan opened it. She managed to whack him sharply in the chest instead. Her face flushed a bright red. "Oh, Lachlan, I am so sorry."
"No worries, luv." He rubbed the stinging spot on his chest. "It's just a flesh wound." He grinned at her.
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail!" Lisa was amazed that Lachlan would know about that. But it really shouldn't surprise her. He did have a wicked sense of humor and the british comedy troop would probably appeal to that.
"Righto!" Lachlan ushered her inside. He took the bottles of liquor and put them in the refrigerator.
Lisa used the time to look around Lachlan's room. It was fairly large but all open. There was no separate rooms. Each area flowed into the next. Huge windows took up one wall and a glass door opened to a balcony. A overstuffed couch and chair formed a separation for the living room. The entertainment center provided a divider for that room and the kitchen. A large queen size bed with a light blue comforter sat against the other wall. The only walled off room in the suite was the bathroom. Through the open door, Lisa could see a sink and a large claw foot bath tub.
The wall were decorated with various pictures and paintings. Some were of aircraft ranging from a line drawing of the Wright Brother's first plane to a beautiful photograph of a Stealth Fighter in flight. There were also some wonderful pictures of the landscape of Australia. Lisa walked around the room and looked at all the artwork. She stopped at a painting that hung across from the bed. It was an oil painting, the thick strokes of paint and slightly abstract nature made it easy for her to identify as another Theodore Waddell. It was a companion piece to the one that hung in her room. But in this one, instead of a calf, there was the indistinct shadows of a herd of horses pawing through the winter snow. Lachlan noticed that Lisa had stopped walking about and came over to stand behind her. He rested his hands on her shoulders.
"I picked it up when I bought yours. It reminds me of the neddies that we used to have at home. And," he could feel himself start to blush, "it reminds me of you."
Lisa reached up to squeeze one of his hands. "That is so sweet. Thank you again for my painting. I'll miss it when I go home on Monday."
"Is that the only thing you'll miss when you leave?" Lachlan whispered in her ear.
Lisa barely suppressed a shiver, "No, I'll miss Andy, too." Her eyes twinkled with merriment.
"You are a terrible tease," Lachlan chuckled. "I'll just have to give you something to miss." He gently nipped at her earlobe. He slid his lips down the side of her neck as she tipped her head to the side to give him easier access. He felt a shutter run through her as he placed wet, open mouth kisses along the sensitive flesh. He groaned when he heard a knock at the door. //Is there some sort of divine law I'm breaking here?//
Lisa was still breathing heavy as Lachlan walked away. "Wow." She whispered then chuckled. //I seem to say that alot around him.// She watched as Lachlan opened the door to admit a waiter pushing a tray laden cart. Lachlan thanked him and hurried him out the door.
"Lachlan," Lisa teased, "I'm crushed. Here I thought you were inviting me up for a authentic home cooked Australian meal."
"Trust me, luv. If I cooked, all you'd get is damper and vegemite." He grinned at her, "and I know you don't want that."
"Okay, you're right. So what's on the menu tonight?" She reached over to lift up a lid and Lachlan snapped it back down.
"You go sit outside on the balcony. I shall prepare our tea and bring it out." He motioned her to the small terrace outside his room. He had a little table for two set up with candles in the middle. It was already set with plates, flatware and two wine glasses. Lisa lifted a wine glass and arched an eyebrow in inquiry.
"No worries, luv." Lachlan poured a beer into his and filled Lisa's glass with hard lemonade.
"Perfect! I never did acquire a taste for wine."
Lachlan lifted the covers off the tray with a flourish. Underneath was tender herb roasted chicken breast accompanied by rice pilaf and an assortment of steamed vegetables. Lachlan had already slipped the pieces of white chocolate cheesecake in the refrigerator for later.
"Oh, Lachlan, it looks wonderful. My compliments to the chef." Lisa couldn't help but tease him more. That set the tone for the whole dinner. The conversation was light and playful. Lachlan teased Lisa about not eating her vegetables which he so graciously took off her hands. She kidded him over the fact that he carefully picked the mushrooms out of the rice pilaf. Lachlan teased Lisa about not wanting to go riding on his 'petrol pony'. He reminded her that Jennifer had not only gone riding with him but also driven the motorcycle home. Lisa responded in kind with teasing of her own. She feigned shock at discovering yet another one of the Boyz that had never gone to one of John's hockey games.
"Well, clear your social calendar then, flyboy. You're coming to the game with Jeff and I tomorrow. And I don't want to hear any whining about how cold it is in the arena. I just so happened to have brought some of my entire hockey jerseys along so you can borrow one. I'm loaning one to Jeff but I have another." Lisa stood as Lachlan started to clear the plates. He motioned her to sit down.
"I've got it all taken care of. You just stay out here and enjoy the night. I'll be right back."
Lisa walked over to lean against the balcony railing. It really was a beautiful night. The night sky was inky black with a million twinkling stars over head. She could barely hear the occasional note of music drifting up from the Tavern below. Off in the distance she could hear the faint sound of hoof beats. She turned as Lachlan came out. "Is that..?"
"Yep, East still loves his nighttime rides." Lachlan never ceased to be amazed at the idea of riding horseback at breakneck speeds though the night. He was pretty sure he'd stick to his aeroplanes and motorcycles.
Lisa smiled as Lachlan came up behind and place his hands on the railing on each side of her. She could feel the heat radiating off his chest against her back.
They stood there for a long moment, quietly enjoying each other's company. Lisa leaned back a little and Lachlan wrapped his arms around her. He planted a soft kiss in her hair. The music from the Tavern suddenly raised in volume and Lisa could hear the opening strains of the waltz from Hammer's Over The Anvil. "Dance with me?" He whispered and gently turned her around.
She placed one hand on his shoulder and rested the other one in his open palm. She could feel the warmth of his hand on the small of her back. He carefully guided her around the balcony, always leading with just the right amount of pressure on her hand. His eyes locked with hers and she couldn't look away. The song ended way too quickly. He finished with a twirl and pulled her back into his arms. Her smile was dreamy. "Amazing that someone would be playing that song."
"Yeah, amazing." Lachlan wasn't going to tell Lisa about ringing the Tavern while he put away the dishes. Jeff had promised to play "The Waltz" and make sure the doors to the patio were open. Lachlan preferred to let her think it was just the magic of this night. He leaned his head down and pressed his lips againsthers. The kiss started out soft but reached a fevered pitch quickly. He groaned as her tongue slipped in to tangle with his. He pulled her tighter against him. She ran wet kisses along his jaw line stopping to gently nip the sensitive spot under his ear. Lachlan couldn't take anymore. He swept her up into his arms and carried her inside. She continued to rain kisses along his neck as he walked towards the bed. He set her gently on the doona and laid down next to her. He kissed her deeply as his hands started to unbutton her shirt. He was desperate to feel the soft flesh beneath it. His hand glided across her ribs and towards the fullness of her breasts.
The sudden awareness of skin on skin shocked Lisa into the realization of how far out of control things had gotten. Her shirt was half unbuttoned. With a stifled moan of panic, she wiggled out from under Lachlan. Her hands were trembling as she tried to rebutton her shirt.
"Lisa?" Lachlan's voice was low and husky.
"I'm sorry, Lachlan. This is happening way too fast for me." She hung her head. "I don't mean to be a tease. I'm just no good at these things."
Lachlan stood up and walked towards her. He used a gentle fingertip under her chin to force her to look at him. "Honey, I happen to think that your very good at these things." His smile was tender.
"It's just that I've never made love to anyone but my ex-husband. And that was a long time ago." She tried to blink back tears. "I just have to be sure about how I feel. It's not something I can do causally. I'm sorry. I really like you alot and I think I could be falling in love with you but I'm not sure. And I have to love someone before I can be intimate with them. "
"Lisa, look at me." Lachlan watched as she slowly raised her eyes to his. "It's alright. I care a great deal about you. I would love to make love to you. But I can wait until you're sure."
"Oh, Lachlan" She returned his smile with a trembling one of her own. "What did I ever do to deserve you?"
Lachlan's teasing tone was back. "I don't know, luv. But it must have been something really good."
Lisa couldn't help but laugh at Lachlan's arrogance. She punched his playfully on the arm. "Egotistic bastard, aren't you?"
Lachlan was glad to see that the tears had retreated from Lisa's eyes. He had told her the truth, he was willing to wait for her to be sure of herself and her feelings. He had every bit of confidence that she would eventually realize that they were meant for each other. And just because they weren't going to consummate their relationship yet didn't mean he couldn't drive her crazy with steamy kisses and hot caresses. He grinned wickedly. "Come on, luv. Let's have some dessert and you can tell me what I need to know so I don't look like an idiot at the hockey game tomorrow."
The rest of the evening was more relaxed. The indulged in the wonderful cheesecake and Lisa did her best to educated Lachlan about hockey. She wasn't exactly sure what sort of rules John played by so she kept the explanations simple.
Lisa realized that tomorrow was Sunday. No matter where she was she always managed to find a church to go to. And she enjoyed going to different churches, seeing how other's conducted their services. "Lachlan, is there a church in town I can go to?"
"Sure, luv but we have services here. Don't forget about Cort."
Lisa had forgotten that the handsome gunslinger was also a preacher. "Oh, that's right." She smiled at the thought of Cort behind the pulpit. She was sure she was going to enjoy this service.
It was late when Lachlan finally walked her back to her room.
Lisa stood in her doorway, "I really enjoyed myself tonight. Thank you for dinner and," her voice softened, "for understanding.."
Lachlan reached up and tucked a stray strand of hair back behind her ear. "No, worries, luv. She's apples." He tenderly brushed his lips against hers. "I'll see you in the morning. Cort starts services at 9:00 am. I'll meet you at the chapel door at 8:50." He gave her another quick kiss and turned to walk away.
Lisa quietly slipped into her room.
Wow, it had been another amazing day.
Part Eight
True to his word, Lachlan was waiting outside the door to the small chapel when Lisa arrived on Sunday. He looked devastating handsome in his dark blue sports jacket and pants. His light blue shirt showed off his tan and Lisa leaned closer to see the pattern on his tie. She chuckled softly. "Bugs Bunny?"
Lachlan returned her grin. "Of course. I love that wascally wabbit." His own gaze took in Lisa's Sunday best. She was wearing a hot pink sweater that clung slightly to her curves and a floral print skirt that wrapped around her legs in the gentle breeze. Lachlan quickly raised his eyes back to hers before his body got any ideas that might be too embarrassing for church. He grabbed her hand and lead her into the chapel. It was a small, cozy place with soft lights and piped in organ music. The whole back wall behind the pulpit was covered in rock, giving it a rustic look in keeping with the Hotel. A large, simple wooden cross hung on the rock. There was already several people seated in the pews.
Lachlan escorted Lisa up to a pew close to the front. He waved a younger version of himself over.
"Lisa, I'd like you to meet Lieutenant Jack Corbett." He gestured to Jack. "He and I were the only military blokes around until Terry showed up. Jack, this is a very good friend of mine, Lisa.
Lisa smiled at the young man. He looked so much like Lachlan, their hair was even styled with the same shorter on the sides and longer on the top haircut. It was easy to tell that Jack was several years younger than Lachlan but he carried himself with the same military bearing.
"Nice to meet you, Lieutenant Corbett." She held out her hand.
His grin was wide. "No need for formality, luv. Please call me, Jack." He shook her hand firmly.
"Alright, Jack it is." Lisa returned his grin with a wink. He really was an adorable boy. But to her, he was a boy. She turned back to the man at her side. She could see John Biebe walking up to take a seat a few rows behind them. She smiled at him. He returned it with a noncommittal smile of his own. She noticed that he wasn't with Tina but was accompanied by another woman. Lisa noticed that his arm was firmly wrapped around the woman's waist. Lisa tugged at Lachlan's lapel to force him to lean closer. "Lachlan," she whispered, "Aren't Tina and John engaged?'
"Yeah," Lachlan had no idea why he was whispering. "So?"
"Well, then. Why is he sitting behind us with his arm around another woman?" She stopped him from looking around with a hand on his chin. "Don't look! He'll think we are spying on him." Lisa sighed when Lachlan pulled out of her grasp and looked behind them. She looked at him with confusion when he started chuckling. "What?" She hissed.
"That's not John, that's Jake." Lachlan stifled a snicker at Lisa's embarrassment. "He's a look alike for John but he's not 'one of us' per say. But he's turned out to fit in quite well. He and Erin are staying for a bit of a holiday. I'll introduce you after the service." He turned her around and sat in the pew as Cort took the pulpit.
Lisa looked around the chapel. There were people here that she recognized and some she didn't. Peaches was sitting in the front row with Liz. Colin and 'Chelle were sitting in the row behind them. Lisa recognized Dominac even though she had never met him. NormaJean and Mannie were sitting in the pew in front of her and Lachlan.
"Good morning, all." Cort's soft southern accent whispered in his words. "Nice to see everyone here this morning. I'd like to extend a special hello to all the new people here." He pointed to a group of ladies sitting towards the front. "Welcome to Evelyne, Joann, Roberta and Aurore. They are some of the newer people at the Nest and I hope they feel at home here." He smiled warmly at the women. " And I see that Lachlan has brought Lisa with him today. It's nice to see you here."
He motioned to Arthur who stood blushing at the front of the church. "Arthur will now lead us in a few hymns." The congregation stood and joined in the singing. Lisa could hear Lachlan's rich deep voice blending with her higher alto. She normally couldn't sing very well but combining with Lachlan's improved her pitch. She smiled at him and he slid an arm around her back and pulled her closer.
After the hymns, Cort began his sermon. He started with, "I was going to give a sermon today about the beatitudes but a talk with a friend made me change my mind. So bear with me 'cuz I'm kinda making this up as I go. I'd like to talk to y'all this morning about something I'm well aquatinted with--forgiveness."
Lisa was surprised at how good a minister the former gunfighter was. His sermon was insightful and he used several references from the Bible to illustrate his points. He stated that sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself. But without being able to forgive yourself, you can't really forgiven someone else. Lisa noticed that Mannie's arm tightened around NJ when Cort said that. Cort's voice rang with conviction when he said, "And trust me, I know alot about forgiving oneself."
He lead them in a closing prayer. "Lord, for all we ought to have thought and did not think, all we ought to have said and did not say, all we ought to have done and did not do, we pray to Thee God, for forgiveness. Amen. He raised his head and dismissed the congregation.
After greeting Peaches as well as Colin and 'Chelle, Lisa and Lachlan walked outside. There was a small group of people talking. Lachlan led Lisa over to them.
Lisa turned at Lachlan's motioning and was introduced to Erin and Jake. They seemed like a wonderful couple and she was still amazed by the resemblance between Jake and John. //Must get mighty confusing when the two of them stand side by side.// She found out when John walked up accompanied by Tina. Lisa knew her eyes were darting back and forth between the two men.
Tina chuckled, "It's pretty weird, isn't it. You've got to watch out for these two. They tried to pull one over on me at our engagement party." She looped an arm through John's. "Silly man thought I wouldn't be able to tell the difference."
"Congratulations on your engagement." Lisa smiled at the happy couple.
Lisa's shoulder was barely brushing Lachlan's as she was talking to Tina. She felt him stiffen slightly and turned to see what had caused it. A petite woman was walking towards them, accompanied by a man Lisa recognized as Steve from 'Breaking Up'. Lisa slipped her hand into Lachlan's as a show of support. He threaded his fingers through hers.
"G'day, Brynn. G'day, Steve." Lachlan's voice betrayed none of his feelings. He and Brynn had talked many times since their breakup. They had parted as friends but for some reason it still stung just a bit to see her with Steve. He sighed just a little. //Maybe we always want what we can't have. Or maybe I just want what her and Steve have.//
Lisa was standing close enough to hear Lachlan's sigh. //I wonder if he is still in love with her?// She squeezed his hand tighter and moved closer to him. Lachlan looked down at her and smiled.
"Lisa, this is Brynn and Steve."
Lisa smiled at the woman. She had talked to her several times on IM but it was different to meet her in person. Plus, during IM, Lisa tended to forget the history Brynn and Lachlan had. It was hard to decide whether to like her or be angry with her for hurting Lachlan. Lisa realized it was a long time ago but she was very good at holding grudges for other people. She decided to just see what happened. "Hi Brynn. I'm glad to finally meet you. And you, too Steve"
Brynn looked at the woman clutching Lachlan's hand tightly. She hadn't missed the look that had passed between them. She was hoping that Lachlan had finally found someone. She wanted him to be happy. He would always hold a special place in her heart with what they had shared. It had hurt her badly to let go of him. Glancing over at Steve, she realized that it was for the best however.
NormaJean and Mannie soon joined the group and more introductions were made. Lisa's head was spinning from meeting all these new people. Everyone teased Lachlan when he said that they were going to the hockey game. Turns out he wasn't kidding when he said that he had never attended. Lisa glanced down at her watch. She tugged at Lachlan's sleeve. "We better get going if we are going to change for the game."
They walked back to the Hotel, hand in hand, unaware that everyone was watching them.
"Come on, stop your whining!" Lisa was glaring at Jeff. "You were worried about being cold. Well, a hockey jersey will keep you warm."
"Bloody oath, Lisa. Look at it. It's got a fucking duck on the front." Jeff gestured to the Mighty Ducks logo on the front of the white jersey Lisa was holding out for him. "Every bastard and his dog in the damn arena will be laughing at me."
Lisa whipped the jersey around. "See this," She pointed to the name on the back. "This is a personalized Teemu Selanne jersey. He doesn't even play for the Ducks anymore. I was crushed when they traded him. For days on end I ranted to Jennifer about it. Now, it's a symbol of how much I like you that I'm even letting you borrow this. You should be proud to wear it."
"Still think that Ducks is a bloody stupid name for a professional team." Jeff pouted.
"Hey, buddy. No one makes fun of my team. I've been a Ducks fan from the beginning. Charter member of their booster club and everything. Now, I've heard just about every joke out there so don't even try it." She stood there with her hands on her hips, staring at him with righteous indignation. "As for the name, how's intelligent is naming a rugby team The Swan's or the Rabbits or the Wallabies for that matter?"
"Alright you two, break it up." Lachlan walked out wearing the Phoenix Coyotes jersey, Lisa had loaned him. "Lisa, if you are such a Ducks fan, why don't you let Jeff wear the jersey that you've got on?"
Lisa crossed her arms tightly and hugged her jersey to her body protectively, "Because nobody wears my Wayne Gretzky Rangers jersey except me. Period, end of story. Now come on, we are going to miss the game."
Lachlan turned to Jeff. "Will you just put the damn jersey on?!?"
"Fine!" Jeff huffed, pulling the jersey over his shirt. His words were muffled but became more clear as he pushed his head through the opening, "Fine but if one person laughs at me, I'm leaving!"
The three of them strolled over to the arena and walked inside. Lisa spun around slowly. Her eyes glowed with excitement. She could smell the ice and feel the chill in the air. There was nothing like an ice arena. Her grin was huge as she turned back to Jeff and Lachlan. "Isn't it wonderful? I can't believe you guys have had this here all this time and not come in."
"Bloody cold, is what it is." Jeff teased her. He ducked before she could slap him lightly on the cheek. He wrapped an arm around her. "I'm just kidding, luv. It is really nice. And look," He pointed over her shoulder. "There's John."
John skated up to the end of the boards and motioned them over. "I never thought I'd see you two Aussies here. Good job, Lisa. And Jeff, love the jersey." He laughed as he skated off.
Jeff raised his eyebrow at Lisa. She kissed him lightly on the cheek and pulled him towards a seat close to the goalie. "Come on, he didn't mean anything by that. Now stop pouting. You look just fine."
They were sitting in the arena watching John and the other players warm up when Jeff nudged Lisa, "Lookie who's here and who she showed up with?"
Lisa turned to look behind her. Her eyes widened then narrowed in annoyance as she noticed Jennifer standing there with Terry. She pointed out the couple to Lachlan. "Did you or did you not spend most of yesterday helping distract Jennifer so that Jeff and I could help decorate her room so that Andy could win her back?" Lachlan knew it was a rhetorical question so he kept quiet and let her vent. "So tell me, why is she here with Terry?"
Lachlan, ever the voice of reason, suggested that Lisa go ask her.
"Why don't you grab Terry and distract him while I talk to Jennifer?" Lisa strode over to Jennifer as Lachlan and Terry walked away. "So, Jennifer, did you have a nice night last night?"
"Oh, Lisa, it was wonderful, One of the most romantic nights of my life." Jennifer glowed with the memory of her evening with Andy. "Andy told me that you and Jeff helped. Thank you."
"I'm glad you had a nice time. Imagine my surprise to find you accompanied by Terry today." Lisa knew her voice was sarcastic. It was her usual response when she was angry. "So Andy's been kidnapped and Terry's helping you negotiate for his release?" She gave Jennifer an inquiring look. "That's the only explanation I can think of after all the work Andy did to get you back."
Lisa could tell that Jennifer was shocked by the barely disguised anger in her voice, She listened as Jennifer tried to explain.
"It's not like that at all. I made this date with Terry before Andy and I made up. And Lisa," Jennifer sounded plaintive as she continued. "I'm crazy about Andy but there's just this thing with Terry."
"Thing?" Lisa raised an eyebrow in inquiry.
""I don't know how to describe it. I fell hard for Terry in Proof of Life, but when I came here, I met Andy. We hit it off instantly, and before I knew it, I was falling head over heels in love. Then I met Terry." Jennifer sighed. "We share some kind of connection, too. I wanted to spend some time with him, to explore my feelings. I don't want to be with Andy wondering 'What if?' I need to be sure I make the right decision - I don't want to hurt anyone." Running a hand through her hair, she hoped Lisa would understand. "Does that make any sense?"
Now having a connection with two guys was something Lisa could understand. Her anger faded quickly. She gave Jennifer a quick hug. "Sure it does. It's hard to be attracted to two men at the same time. I don't envy you your decision. They are both great guys." Lisa's smile was quick. "Makes me kinda glad my only problem was falling in love with a gay guy."
They both laughed, releasing the tension between them. Jennifer looped her arm though Lisa's. "Come on, let's grab a beer and teach these Aussie blokes something about hockey."
The game was fast and fun. Lisa was amazed at how well all the guys on the ice played. It was so much fun to cheer for every goal, no matter which side made it. Which was probably a good idea, since Lachlan and Jeff had no idea what was going on and tended to cheer at the wrong moments. She was sitting between the two of them and gave them light smacks on the arm to let them know when they screwed up. Lisa and Jennifer stood up and cheered as John made the final goal of the night. Although they weren't officially keeping score, Lisa was sure that John's team had won. She sighed as John skated past Tina on the way to the locker room and placed a hand over his heart.
Lachlan noticed her wistful smile and wrapped her in a tight hug. "The love between those two is bloody amazing, isn't it."
Lisa looked up into Lachlan's eyes. "Bloody amazing is right. Some people have all the luck."
"And some people don't see the luck they already have." He whispered right before he kissed her.
Lisa stood next to her car, her green eyes shining with tears. "It gets harder every time, Jeff. I don't want to go." She sniffed.
Jeff enveloped her in a tight hug. "Aw, sweetie. You'll be back soon, right?"
"Not soon enough. I'm going to miss you so much." Her breath hitched. //I hate good-byes// She squeezed him tight.
Jeff brushed his lips lightly across hers and pulled away. "I believe there is a certain pilot waiting to say something to you. So I'll just say Tooroo and leave you two alone."
"Bye, Jeff." Lisa turned to Lachlan. Now a single tear did fall. Lachlan bent down and kissed it away.
"Don't cry, luv." His own voice was a little husky.
Lisa chewed nervously on her bottom lip and blinked rapidly, forcing the remaining tears back. "I'm going to miss you terribly, Lachlan. We never even got to finish my aerial tour of the Nest."
"No worries. We'll finish it next time you come." He pressed his lips to hers in a tender kiss. He handed her a small package. "Don't open this until you are home." He kissed her again, deeper this time. They were both breathing heavily by the time they parted. "Now, go. The sooner you leave, the sooner you can return. God speed and safe journey." He opened the door to her car and help her in. She pressed a hand to the glass. Lachlan kissed his finger tips and pressed his hand to the other side of the window. He could see you mouth the words, "Good-bye" He stepped back and watched her leave.
It ws Jeff's turn to be inside the Tavern, to be looking out the window watching Lisa drive away. He really was going to miss her. They had so much fun together. He'd never admit it to her but he really did enjoy the hockey game, even the stupid jersey. He had a feeling that there would be more hockey in his future. Maybe he'd even see if John would teach him how to skate before Lisa got back. Wouldn't she be surprised?
Jeff turned at a tap on his shoulder. Rick was standing behind him. "Yeah?"
Rick's normally sparkling gray eyes were dull. "Jeff, we need to talk."
Part Nine
The music of her car stereo was turned up loud enough to drown out her own singing. Lisa tapped her fingers on the steering wheel in time with the music. The sun reflected off the charm swinging from the bracelet on her wrist. It was a small platinum heart with tiny wings on it. Lisa smiled as she remembered opening Lachlan's gift. The card inside had read:
Lisa;
Know that when you leave, you take my heart with you. Please return it to me soon.
I love you.
Lachlan
She took one hand off the wheel to gently caress the heart. //I love you too, Lachlan.// There was no use fighting it any longer. She had spent the whole week daydreaming about the handsome young pilot. She pressed down on the accelerated to increase her speed. She was headed back to the Nest and she was ready to tell Lachlan what he meant to her. She was ready to show Lachlan whathe meant to her.
Lisa threw her car into park and jumped out. She smiled at the wonderful man that was coming out the door to greet her.
"Lachlan!" She hurried her pace. He met her halfway and wrapped his arms around her. He spun her around. By the time he was done they were both dizzy and laughing. She pulled his head down for a passionate kiss.
"I am so glad you're here. I missed you, luv.", Lachlan grabbed the bag that was in her hand. "Come on inside, let's go to your room where I can greet you properly." His grin was wicked.
"Sounds like a plan," she returned his grin with one of her own. They walked hand in hand, into the Nest. Lisa did a quick check in at the desk to let Peaches know that she had arrived. Lachlan practically dragged Lisa up to that small corner room on the second floor that she had claimed as her own. Lachlan was just slipping the key into the door when he heard Andy call out Lisa's name. She turned around and missed the disgusted look Lachlan sent Andy.
"Lisa!" Andy was almost breathless from his run to catch up with the couple. "Did Lachlan tell you about Jeff?"
Lisa whirled back and looked at Lachlan, "What about Jeff? Is something wrong? Is he okay?"
Lachlan's words were forced, "Rick's gone."
"What do you mean gone?"
"Just that, gone. He broke off with Jeff, took a leave of absence from the Tavern, that kind of gone." Lachlan looked over her head at Andy. His eyes said "Scram" and Andy read the message loud and clear.
"Uh, well, I'll just be going now. Ooroo." Andy hurried off down the hall.
Lisa watched him go and then turned accusing eyes towards Lachlan. "Rick's gone. Jeff's probably miserable. When did this happen? Just when were you planning on telling me about this?"
"Rick left yesterday. I just wanted a little time with you first. I knew the minute you found out, you'd go running off to Jeff." Lachlan pulled her inside the room. There was no way he was having this conversation out in the hallway. "Is it so bloody wrong to want to see you for two ticks without having Jeff around or have his name mentioned?"
"You're jealous." Lisa was amazed. Lachlan was jealous of her friendship with Jeff.
"Damn right, I'm jealous. You spend most of your time with him. What am I supposed to think?" Lachlan was speaking without thinking now. Everything that he had kept bottled up inside him came out. "What I think is that Jeff means more to you than I do."
"It's different. You can't compare my feelings for Jeff with my feelings for you. It's like comparing apples and oranges. It's two different things." Lisa grabbed her bag out of Lachlan's hand and tossed it on the bed, her coat soon followed. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to see how my friend Jeff is. We can talk about this later."
"Lisa!" Lachlan called out just as she was walking though the door. "Are you still in love with Jeff?" His only answer was a slamming door.
"Open up!" Lisa pounded lightly on Jeff's door. "Come on, buddy, I know you're in there."
Jeff pulled open the door. He was holding a whiskey bottle in his hand His dark hair was tousled liked he'd ran his hands through it one too many times. He was wearing shorts and a worn flannel shirt. He looked miserable. "Go away."
"Nope, sorry, ain't happening." Lisa pushed past him into his room. To his amazement, she grabbed the liquor bottle on her way by.
"This," she waved the bottle, "is not the answer."
Jeff made a half-hearted attempt to grab the bottle back. "Well, I happen to think it is."
Lisa set the bottle down on the small table by the door. She enveloped Jeff in a tight hug. "Aw, sweetie. I'm really really sorry about Rick. What happened?"
Jeff's voice was rough. "He said I needed time to think about where our relationship was going. He said we both needed to think about what we mean to each other." He buried his face in Lisa's neck. She could feel the hot wetness as a tear slipped free from under his long eyelashes and splashed on her neck. She rubbed his back.
"He said, I needed space to decide what I feel about him." Jeff sniffed and blinked rapidly to force back the stinging in his eyes. "What is it with you Yanks and your bloody space?"
"Oh god, Jeff." A horrifying thought came to her, "It's my fault, isn't it? He's jealous of the time you've spent with me, isn't he? Oh, Jeff. I never wanted to come between you and Rick. This is all my fault." She pulled back, looking deeply in his eyes. "I'm right, aren't I?"
Jeff sighed, "Rick thinks I care more about you than I do about him."
"I got the same bullshit from Lachlan." Lisa snorted, "Boyfriends, Ha! Who needs them? What we need is comfort food!"
Jeff motioned to the bottle sitting on the table, "You took my 'comfort food' already."
"That's not comfort food. Hang on, I'm going downstairs to get some real comfort food." She started out the door. Just before the door closed, her hand snaked back inside and grabbed the whiskey bottle.
"Hey!" Jeff smiled slightly. He was starting to feel better already.
Lisa was sprawled across Jeff's bed. Wrappers from the massive quantities of junk food they had consumed was scattered about them.
"Ugh!" Jeff moaned as he leaned back against the headboard, "How can you call that comfort food? I wouldn't say I'm comfortable." He pushed the remains of a package of cookies to the floor. "Yuck, I think I ate too many biscuits. And if I have to see you eat one more crisp dipped in tomato sauce, I'm going to heave."
"Then its working." She smiled at him. "It's comfort food because it makes you forget what really wrong 'cuz you're too nauseated to care." She looked over at Jeff. His smile was half hearted.
She crawled across the bed and leaned on Jeff's chest. She looked up into his sad blue-green eyes. "You miss him, don't ya?"
Jeff sighed, "Yeah, but not as much when I'm with you." He enveloped her in his arms., He pulled her up for a gentle kiss on the lips. "Thank you." He smiled as she slid down, her chin resting on his chest as she stared up at him. "I'm happy that you're here. You know I'm crazy about you."
Lisa lifted her head and gave him another kiss, "I'm crazy about you, too."
For a moment they just stared into each others eyes. Jeff leaned down and kissed her tenderly on the forehead. She laid her head back down on his chest to listen to his heartbeat. He stroked her hair.
Lisa slowly slide her hand across Jeff's flannel covered stomach. She carefully slipped one button out of its hole, followed by another. She could hear Jeff's heartbeat accelerate, matching her own quickened pulse. She glanced up at him. He gave her a tender half smile and scooted farther down on the bed.. Laying back down on his chest, she continued to unbutton his shirt. Pulling it open, she gently caressed the strip of skin she had exposed.
Jeff sucked his breath in with a hiss. Lisa's soft touch felt like fire. He gasped softly when her lips replaced her caressing hands and she began placing wet, open mouth kisses on his belly and his chest. She occasionally glanced up to make sure he was okay with what she was doing. She kissed her way up his body and he tipped his head to the side to allow her easier access to his neck. He groaned as her teeth gently scraped along his neck. He grabbed the back of her head, pulling her up, his mouth seeking hers. He kissed her again and again, running his tongue along the seam of her lips, seeking entrance. He slipped in when she moaned.
Lisa's head was spinning. This couldn't be happening, not with Jeff. It wasn't supposed to be like this, they were buddies now. All her fantasies of a being with Jeff like this, with him kissing her like he wanted her, were coming true. She felt overwhelmed. She broke away, breathing hard. "Jeff?" She looked at him, unspoken questions in her eyes.
Jeff pulled her back to him. He started kissing her again, gently, raining soft kisses across her face. In between kisses, he was saying, "Please, I don't want to be alone tonight." His hand slid down her back into the gap left by her shorts. He cupped her butt in his hand and pulled her on top of him.
She wanted him, he obviously wanted her, who cared about the rest. Lisa could feel Jeff's arousal through the layers of clothes separating them Heat exploded in her lower belly. She rubbed against him, wanting some relief from this burning need. She pushed his shirt off his shoulders and he leaned forward slightly, pulling his arms through the sleeves. She caressed his arms, his shoulders, his chest. Jeff's hands tangled into her hair. He pressed his lips firmly against hers, opening his mouth to her probing tongue. She slid it along his teeth, teasing, pulling back when his tongue reached out, luring him back into her own mouth.
Jeff gasped. He was hard, throbbing with desire. He dragged her t-shirt over her head and made short work of her bra. He exposed her to his gaze. His hands reached up to caress her breasts, finger tips gently flicking over tight nipples. With a gentle push, she was lying on her back. He dipped his head and took one of the pebbled buds into his mouth. His teeth grazed along the sensitive flesh. He continued suckling first one breast then the other until she was gasping, begging. He brought his mouth back to hers for another mind-blowing kiss. He felt her hands caressing his chest, sliding down his belly, slipping beneath the waistband of his shorts to the engorged flesh below.
Lisa caressed his rigid shaft, sliding her hand along its length. He felt like a steel rod encased in a satin glove, she could feel his pulse at the base, throbbing in time with her own racing heartbeat. She tightened her grip and stoked him faster. Her other hand cupped his sac and squeezed gently. She quickened her pace even more. Stopping only to allow one finger to occasionally bush against the tiny slit in the top, spreading the few drops of liquid that had already leaked out. Jeff's hand shot out, stopping her.
"Not yet, luv. I need to be inside ya." He arched his hips pulling his shorts the rest of the way off and tossed them aside. He grasped hers and did the same. Jeff's hand went to the throbbing spot between her legs, sliding along the wet folds. Her groan of pleasure mingled with his own. He could feel she was wet, ready for him. He positioned himself above her. The tip of his cock was poised at her entrance. He looked down at her. "Are you sure?" Although it would kill him to stop now, he wasn't going to force her.
"I've never been more sure of anything my whole life." Lisa wrapped her legs around his waist forcing him to slide into her. She pulled him against her, kissing him savagely, her nails digging into his shoulders. She groaned as he slammed in to the hilt.
Jeff's control snapped. He plunged into her over and over. His pace was quickening, his hips pistoning faster and faster. Lisa was writhing beneath him, moaning his name. She was running her hands up and down his back, sliding along his ass. He could feel that he was close to the edge, his balls were tightening and drawing up against his body. He reached down with one hand to where they were joined, caressing the tight bud at the junction of Lisa's thighs. She screamed her release. He could feel her walls contracting around him. That sent him over the edge. He groaned loudly as he spilled his hot cum inside her. He collapsed on her chest, his breath coming in gasps. He could feel her still contracting around his softening penis. He buried his face in her neck. He planted a soft kiss below her ear. He needed a second to catch his breath and then he'd roll off her.
Lisa lay quivering beneath him. She was shocked at what had just happened between them. Unsure of herself, she didn't say anything when Jeff slipped out of her and collapsed on the bed. She pulled the sheet up to cover herself. Shyly, she looked over at Jeff. Tendrils of his hair were plastered to his forehead. She reached out with a trembling hand to sweep them back. He pulled her against him. She curled up at his side and rested her head on his chest. She could hear his heart beat gradually slowing down. He tenderly kissed the top of her head. He reached over, flipped off the bedside light and plunged the room into darkness. They lay still in the quiet.
"Lisa?" Jeff voice penetrated the silence.
"Yeah?" Lisa's answer was barely a whisper.
"This wasn't just a root for me. Something I did 'cuz Rick was gone."
"I know." but her voice didn't sound very sure.
"We'll talk about it in the morning."
"Alright." Lisa waited, she listened to the sound of Jeff's breathing. When she thought he was asleep, she kissed him gently on the chest, right above his heart. "I love you," she whispered. Then she snuggled up against him, closed her eyes and fell into a dreamless slumber.
Jeff bit his lip at her tenderly spoken
words. Long after she fell asleep, he lay awake, eyes open in
the darkness. His thoughts were racing. //What have I
done?//
Part Ten
Morning came way too early for Jeff. He squinted at the bright light streaking across his bed, bright light that illuminated the woman curled up against him. Her face was relaxed in slumber and her long hair was spread across his pillow. He carefully slid out from under her arm. She made a soft sound in her sleep and burrowed into the warm spot on his pillow that he had left behind. Jeff grabbed his shorts off the floor and slipped them on. He walked to the kitchen to put water on for tea. After pouring himself a cup, he walked to window. He stared out on the football field, his eyes not really focusing on anything.
His thoughts whirled. He felt terrible. He knew he had taken advantage of Lisa last night. He had used her, taken comfort in her arms. She was probably wondering what the hell was going on? Oh, he'd done it with girls before, a couple from the office where he'd worked. But it hadn't felt like this. His affection for Lisa and hers in return had made it something special. But it wasn't going to happen again. He was still gay, nothing was going to change that. And he was still in love with Rick, nothing was going to change that either. He remember Lisa's softly spoken words last night when she thought he was asleep. //Dammit! Where's that bloody whiskey bottle?// He turned when he heard a noise behind him. Lisa was standing there. She was wearing his flannel shirt. It reached almost to her knees.
Her smile was tentative, "I hope you don't mind. I couldn't find my t-shirt." He reached up to brush her sleep tousled hair out of her eyes. She jerked back before he could touch her.
//Fuck! This is awkward.// He dropped his hand. "Lisa, we need to talk."
"No really. It okay." Lisa started to back away from him. She didn't really want to hear what he was going to say. That he was sorry that it happened. That he had been lonely, desperate, in need of a lay. "I'll just go." Her eyes raced around the room. "Where's my shorts? Have you seen my shorts? I can't go out there in just your shirt." She started tossing covers off the bed. "Aha!" She held up the elusive article of clothing. Turning her back on Jeff, she slipped them on. She made a break for the door. Jeff's footy skills paid off. He got to the door just as she was opening it. He reached above her and slammed the door shut with his open palm. She whirled around to face him.
Jeff looked down into Lisa's wide green eyes. "You will stay and listen to me." His eyes pleaded with her. "Please."
It was the please that did it. "Oh, alright." Lisa huffed. She went to his refrigerator and grabbed a diet pepsi from the stash Jeff kept in there for her. She sat down on the couch. She popped the top of the soda can and took a long drink. She didn't even look at Jeff as he sat down next to her. "So..talk."
This was harder than Jeff thought. How was he supposed to explain to her what he felt? "I meant what I said last night. This wasn't just a root for me. I really care about you. You're my best friend. I needed you, no one else, last night and you were there for me." He swept his hair back from his face. "But I'm still me, I'm still gay. Last night didn't change that." He gently grasped her chin, turned her head to force her to look at him. His heart clenched at the sadness in her eyes.
"You know, at one time, I'd have sold my soul for a night with you. But then I came here, met you in person. And I realized that being romantically in love with you was silly. You'd never feel that way about me. I became friends with you. And I started to fall in love with Lachlan." She turned tear filled eyes towards him. "What am I supposed to think now?"
"You're supposed to think that this doesn't change anything. We're still best mates." He pulled her into his arms. "Best mates that shared something very special last night." He smiled slightly as she relaxed against him. He tightened his arms and kissed the top of her head. "I'm not going to lose you, ya know."
"I know." She returned his hug with a tight one of her own. "I'm not going to lose you either." She looked up at him. Jeff?"
"Yeah?"
"You gonna tell Rick?"
Jeff thought about it for a moment. "If he comes back? I'm not sure. You going to tell Lachlan?"
Lisa sighed. "I don't know."
They sat there for awhile, neither believing that the events of the previous night weren't going to change things. Wondering how this was going to affect their relationship with each other and the loves in their lives. Finally Lisa disengaged from Jeff's embrace. She sat up. Her smile was tinged with sadness.
"I need to go, Jeff." She stood up and walked towards the door. "Can I borrow your shirt? I still can't find mine."
Jeff nodded. He watched as Lisa walked out the door, shutting it quietly behind her. He sat there for a long moment and stared out the window. Finally, he reached over to the phone. He dialed a number and waited for a answer on the other end. Jeff took in a shaky breath when he heard the voice on the other end say, "Hello?"
"Rick, It's me...No wait, don't hang up." Jeff swallowed hard. "I'd really like to see you. Please."
Lisa walked up the back stairs to her room. Luckily she hadn't ran into anyone that would question what she was doing, wearing Jeff's flannel shirt and a pair of shorts at eight in the morning. She quietly opened the door to her room and slipped inside.
"About bloody time you came home!"
Lisa whirled around, a hand pressed to her chest to keep her racing heart inside. "Lachlan, you scared the hell out of me. What are you doing here?" She looked closer at him. He was wearing the same clothes that he wore yesterday and his cheeks were smudged with stubble. He looked like he had been there all night.
"Waiting for you." Lachlan's eyes narrowed. His gaze raked over her. She was wearing Jeff's shirt and the shorts she had been in yesterday. "Where the hell have you been all night?"
"I was with Jeff." Lisa was starting to get angry. She wasn't about to let someone question her whereabouts. She had been in a relationship that had required checking in. She wasn't about to have that happen her again. She put her hands on her hips, "Not that it's any of your business."
Lachlan's eyes widened. He could see, there in the gap at the collar of her shirt, the edge of a tiny red mark on her collarbone. He reached over and pulled the shirt aside to reveal the hickey. "Bloody hell! You fucked him!" Lachlan tone was incredulous. He almost couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"Lachlan, it wasn't like that." Lisa was scared, she had never seen Lachlan this angry. She flinched when he grabbed her chin roughly and forced her to look up at him. He was breathing quickly in angry bursts. He pulled her closer with a firm hand on her chin.
"Look me in the eyes and tell me you didn't root him." Lachlan could feel his heart shatter when she dropped her eyes and kept silent.
"I can't believe this." He let go of her chin and paced the room. "He's a bloody poofter. I never thought he'd do the naughty with ya."
Lisa was at a loss on how to explain what had happened betweenher and Jeff. "He was lonely, miserable about Rick leaving. I was just trying to give him some comfort. It just happened. He's one of my best friends, Lachlan. I couldn't just sit by and watch him suffer." She could tell the minute the words were out of her mouth that her explanation had fallen on deaf ears.
"Bugger all!' Lachlan yelled. He came to stand in front of Lisa. "Comfort, shit, honey. That's the same kinda comfort Betsy gave the soldiers for a price."
The crack of her open palm against his cheek sounded like a gunshot. Lisa was shaking she was so angry. "Are you calling me a whore?"
"Well, if the shoe fits..." Lachlan reached up and caught her hand as she raised it to slap him again. He glared at her, "Don't even think about it."
"How dare you?" Lisa's voice was rough with unshed tears, she pulled her hand free. Stepping back, she glared at him. "I trusted you. I thought you would understand."
He turned accusing eyes on her, "Well, I thought you loved me!?!. Ha! Some love. I asked you once before and you slammed a door in my face. I want an answer now!"
Lisa took a tiny step back as he stormed up to her. Standing toe to toe with her, he glared down at her, his eyes boring into hers. His voice was clipped and hard. "Are..you ..in..love..with..Jeff..Mitchell?"
"Do you want the truth?" Lisa's voice was barely a whisper.
"Damn right, I want the truth."
"Alright then, here's the truth. Yes, I love Jeff but..." Her voice trailed off at the look on Lachlan's face.
All the fire went out of him. Lachlan felt the overwhelming burden of defeat. He had tried so hard to win on Lisa but it was apparently in vain. He'd known from the beginning that he would have to compete with Jeff but he never imagined he would lose. But then he had never counted on Jeff and Lisa's relationship to get physical. Lachlan had planned on the fact that he could love her physically as well as emotionally to give him the advantage.
"Stupid me," Lachlan's voice was flat. "I was under the impression that you might be in love with me. I guess I was wrong. I'll just shoot through." He turned towards the door.
"Lachlan, I am in love with you." Lisa struggled not to cry. This was not how she imagined telling Lachlan how she felt about him.
"Even since you got here, I've wanted to hear those words from you. But not like this. Not after you just fucked one of my best mates." He glared at her, "You can't be in love with me."
"It's not that I love you less. I love him differently. Lachlan, this doesn't change anything about my feeling for you."
Lachlan took in a deep breath. "Well, honey, this changes everything about my feelings for you. I don't share."
The slamming of the door echoed through the quiet room. Lisa slid down the wall and covered her face as the sobs overtook her. Lachlan was right, it did change everything. Nothing was ever going to be the alright again. Her relationship with Jeff had changed. The easy friendship they had was gone. Although they were still going to be friends, there would always be that undertone of awareness and embarrassment.
And Lachlan, Lisa's breath hitched as she thought about him. She had destroyed everything with him. He'd never look at her without thinking that she gave something to his best friend that she had refused to give him. Former best friend is more like it. Lisa doubted that Lachlan would be anymore forgiving towards Jeff. It was amazed her that by coming here she had managed to wreak so many relationships. Maybe it would be better if she left. She stood up and started to pack. She occasionally swiped at the tears that were still running down her cheeks. A sock caught on the charm dangling from her wrist.
Her hand was shaking as she slipped the bracelet off her wrist. "Oh, Lachlan, I never meant to hurt you." She grabbed a piece of paper and started to write.

BANG! BANG! Jeff came out of the bathroom at the pounding of his door. He had just got out of the shower after speaking with Rick. They had talked for awhile and agreed to meet the next day. "Alright, alright, two ticks." He was drying his hair as he walked to the door. He opened the door to look into Lachlan's furious face. Lachlan shoved past him and whirled around. Jeff ducked but not fast enough to avoid Lachlan's punch. He saw stars as Lachlan's fist connected to his face. He lost his balance and fell to the floor.
Lachlan towered over him. "Get up, you bloody poofter. Only you're not really a poofter, are ya?" Lachlan's voice dripped with sarcasm. "After all, you go around fucking other people's girlfriends. God dammit, Jeff. You knew I was in love with her. How could you?"
"Bloody oath, Lachlan!" Jeff stood up, one hand pressed to his stinging eye. "It wasn't like that. I didn't plan for it to happen."
"Yeah, I got the same shit from Lisa." Lachlan turned to pace the room. He stopped at the edge of the bed. The blankets and sheets were still rumpled from the night before. He closed his eyes at the pain they evoked. It was supposed to be him she was with. It was supposed to be his sheets twisted from a night of lovemaking. Never in his worst nightmare had he imagined it like this. Looking down at a bed where the woman he loved had made love to another. "You know, she wouldn't make love to me. She said she needed to make sure of her feelings because she couldn't have sex with someone unless she loved them." Lachlan's voice was husky, "Hell, I guess she was sure of her feelings for you. She told me she was in love with you, Jeff. She looked me straight in the eye and told me." His voice cracked.
"Aw, mate" Jeff tentatively walked towards Lachlan. "It's not the same. She really, really loves you." He stopped when Lachlan held up a hand.
"Save it, Jeff." Lachlan sighed. "I don't really care anymore." He blinked back the tears that stung his eyes. "I gotta get out of here for a while." He'd never hurt his bad in his whole life. All he wanted to do is get in his plane and make it all go away.
"Lach," Jeff stopped him with his hand on the door, "I won't apologize for what happened but I am sorry that we hurt you."
"Ta," Lachlan's voice was bitter. He walked out the door and shut it quietly behind him.
"Well, shit!" Jeff grabbed his shorts and shirt. He was torn between running after Lachlan and checking on Lisa. He was afraid that Lachlan would do something stupid. But Lisa didn't have any one else. He realized that he had monopolized almost all of her time at the Nest. She really didn't get the opportunity to interact with the other people that lived here. Yet another thing, he was guilty of. Maybe he could send one of his 'brothers' after Lachlan. Jeff quickly got dressed and opened his door. He was immensely relieved to see Jack Corbett standing outside, his hand raised to knock.
"Jeff," Jack pulled his hand back. "I heard shouting from clear down the hall. What's going on?" He leaned in to get a closer look at Jeff, "Bloody hell, mate! Did someone punch you? You've got the start of a bonzer black eye."
Jeff had forgotten about that, "Long story, mate. Look, couldyou go after Lachlan? He's probably headed towards the hanger. He and Lisa and I had a bit of a row. Well, more than a bit," He admitted honestly. "I'm afraid he'll do something dumb."
"No worries, mate." Jack turned and ran down
the stairs. Jeff headed over to the Hotel to Lisa's room.
