Eastenders goes 4 nights a week

".. Although it will no doubt delight fans of Eastenders, for the actors, the fourth episode is a mixed blessing.  Most of them are optimistic if a little nervous, knowing that, however good the planning, they'll have to work a little harder for the first few months of the new regime.  On the plus side, extra shows mean extra money, as the Eastenders actors are paid per episode.

"It's like working in a factory and getting offered overtime," says Derek Martin (Charlie Slater).  "You want more money, but you know you'll have to work a bit harder.  Without sounding too mercenary, I welcome it.  If I've got three and a half episodes in my pigeon hole, I know it's a good week."

Others welcome the limelight.  "Nobody goes into the business if they don't want the exposure," says Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo Morgan) "If you've got a heavy storyline you can be working 12-hours a day, six days a week, but you get the rewards in the shape if increased recognition.  As actors we all like to whinge about it, but we all want it.  And it's not as if we're working 36-hour shifts in the NHS.   .."

Rehearsing the knock-out

1) With a safety mat, Garry Hobbs (played by Ricky Groves) and Trevor Morgan (Alex Ferns) square up for a fight following Barry's 40th birthday party.

2) Stunt Coordinator Denise Ryan demonstrates, tugging at the now body-cushion wearing Garry.  The arms (right) belong to episode director Chris Jury

3) Garry's out for the count as Trevor lands a punch that sends him reeling, now into the arms of Lynne Slater (Elaine Lordan)
