Saudi Aramco remained a leader in patronizing and assisting Saudi businesses. In 1994, for example, the company purchased SR3.4 billion ($916 million) worth of materials for oil and gas operations, capital projects and industrial and community support. Saudi vendors and suppliers provided 87 percent or SR3 billion ($801 million) worth of the items purchased in 1994. The company also supports community development in two key areas: home ownership and school construction. Under the Home Ownership Program, which began in 1952, the company furnishes developed lots and provides subsidized loans to eligible Saudi employees. By the end of 1994, over 36,200 homes were built or purchased through the program. A large number of boys' and girls' schools in the Eastern Province have been built under the School Construction Program. The company has built over 108 schools since the program began in 1953. The schools' capacity now exceeds 56,000 students.
